Another vote for an S3/HD model with cable cards working great.

The short and over simplified answer is that a cable card replaces the cable 
box, and allows the series 3 tivos to receive most of the digital channels 
available from most cable providers.  No external box required, the cable 
card replaces it.  It allows Tivo to work well, though some people have 
problems if the card isn't set up correctly.

I suggest the Tivo HDXL (sounds like a Harley model).  With the monster hard 
drive you'll be able to actually store plenty of high def content.  The 
stock 160g drive is very small if you record high def programs.

The only thing you'll be missing by not having a cable box, other than the 
frustrations, is PPV or VOD services.  If you really want those, get a cable 
box for another TV, but the Tivo won't need one, or two.

That's the other nice thing about the S3 units, dual tuners.
