I have read of a model of the sun which tend to demonstrate the magnetic effects (sun spots) based upon magnetic field lines captured within the conductive plasma. The lines get twisted as the sun rotates according to the model. Perhaps the whole concern about an 11 year cycle affected by outside influences is just a red herring. Dark energy, matter and gravitational effects are likely not involved to any major degree.
It would be interesting to find that one of these influences is at work, but no one has found evidence to support the idea as far as I know.
