Fair enough, but this is *not* what I want to do. I want to use
exactly that subset of the Palm addressbook's functionality which
matches the functionality of 'classic' BBDB, and sync accordingly.
The BBDB rules: I do not want it to emulate the Palm, I just want to
be able to carry its contents around on the Palm, occasionally update
them there, and sync back. Reliably.
I've lived with this 'limitation' of the BBDB for years and I have
come to regard it as a crucial component of its essential simplicity;
the one or two collisions I have had have been easy to work around
(although I accept that others may find it more annoying). If it was
the other way round I'd spend a lot more time merging records than I
currently do having to tweak names to separate them. Go on, tell me
I'm an old dog - but is JWZ turning in his bunk, I wonder?
Is the 'duplicates' functionality of 2.2 optional, ie can I set a
variable to force the old behaviour?

OK, OK, I'll try to work up the enthusiasm to try it. Is it still
deemed stable?

Try loading bbdb-xemacs.el into Gnu Emacs!
Cheers,
