I absolutely agree with Jared. Part if not most of design is a diplomacy challenge. Solving a design problem is relatively easy. Getting it executed is the real challenge.
The AA story plays into a myth about design as somehow living outside of the context in which it is created, and this often leads to solo designers pursuing quixotic endeavors and alienating themselves within organizations. Sean mentions the problem of "not owning the whole page." For the solo designer, it as a problem.
