If you connect it and you can barely hear a signal, then you need a pre-amp, or connect the turntable to an amplifier and then connect the Mac to the amp's line out jacks. Generally speaking, if the turntable has a separate ground wire, you'll need a pre-amp. If it doesn't have a ground wire, then you don't need a pre-amp and can connect directly to the mic input.
