If i ever need to record from an external source, I just use Sound Studio that comes with Mac OS X, it saves as AIFF but you can use iTunes to convert it to Mp3.

I searched for Sound Studio, and only found it on OS 9. I have Panther as well. Are you sure it came with OS X? Was it on a previous version, but perhaps not included with Panther?
