If i ever need to record from an external source, I just use Sound Studio that comes with Mac OS X, it saves as AIFF but you can use iTunes to convert it to Mp3.
Sound Studio does not come with OS X. It was included on SOME consumer models of new Macs, but is not included with the OS and normally (when not included in one's application bundle) costs $50 IIRC.
