Yes that mic input is stereo -- a stereo mini plug y'd to dual RCAs does the trick...

I have alittle Behringer mixer -- $50 at guitar center -- with RCAs out... I just connect it with the y-cable straight into the iMac.

I have a guitar plugged in, a drum machine, and a synthesizer. Also a mic. I can easily switch in a bass (I only have 4 channels). Also I have an effects unit aux-ed in. It all works very well.

I use BIAS Deck to do multi-track recording. The 8-tracks version was only $70. More tracks cost more money... but it's easy to do a mix of the first 8 to Peak, import that mix back into Deck, and then add more tracks. I used to use a little cassette multi-track, it was unwieldy and sounded terrible. I will never go back to the primitive days.

I am just learning MIDI so I'm not much help there, sorry! It's fun messing with this stuff, though.

I'd try GarageBand, the new Apple program, but I only have an iMac 333. But Deck and Peak work great.

I couldn't get ProTools Free to work. Audacity and Jasmine didn't work as well as I liked. I started looking into Cubase last week, but thought what am I doing? Deck works perfectly. I've made a bunch of songs using it, and I'll stick with it.

Hi,
I write my own music and want to use my iMac to do all the audio and
MIDI recording. My iMac has a mic input and a line output. I notice that
some of you are using the mic input to record music. Does the mac's mic
socket also function as a stereo line input? Will this work with a
steroe line level from a mixing desk? I'm guessing that if you can use a
mini stereo jack to left and right RCAs cable to connect tape decks to
the iMac, you can also use a line level from a mixer.

I presently use an EDIROL UM1 USB MIDI connector. If I can't use the Mic
input (I have plenty of mini stereo jack to Left and Right RCA's, will I
need to get some dedicated USB audio connector? Also what software would
you guys recommend for recording Audio and MIDI I have heard Cubase,
Logic and Pro Tools touted, but wouldn't minf trying some of the
software some of you have already mentioned.

Your advice recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Pete

I was REALLY happy to find that all I needed was a y-cable -- two rca's going to a stereo mini -- to hook up a cassette deck to my old iMac.

I use BIAS Peak LE to record my old cassettes. It comes bundled with an
excellent Mac multi-track audio recorder, Deck, for around $70. You can
save
files as .wavs as well as .aiffs which comes in handy.

I've recorded all my old bands' stuff and converted them to mp3's using
iTunes. I then uploaded them to a Yahoo Briefcase with links on my
website

Just about the most fun I've ever had -- and the 20-year-old memories
gave
me a smile!
