Records (Vinyl) are recorded with a special equalization curve known, I
believe, as an RIAA curve. To capture these recordings on your Mac, you
need to connect your turntable to a receiver or preamp that has a phono
input. The preamp applies the correct equalization to reproduce the audio
correctly. If you connect the turntable directly to the Mac, the audio will
be distorted.
This is all true UNLESS you connect your turntable instead to an iMic ($35-40) from Griffin Technology, which applies the RIAA equalization curve. Even though I have analog inputs, I opted to buy the iMic because I didn't want to drag in a pre-amp into my office, and so far it has worked flawlessly, allowing me to plug a turntable directly into my iMac without a pre-amp.
