The 4.01 spec says: "The DIV and SPAN elements, in conjunction with the id and class attributes, offer a generic mechanism for adding structure to documents." [http://www.whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/] Can you tell me why a "heirarchy of divisions" is not semantic but a "generic document section" is? I honestly do not understand the difference. The freedictionary.org entry for 'section' says: "A part separated from something; a division; a portion; a slice." The words are synonyms.
