  It isn't proper netiquette to subscribe people to a list without their
consent or approval. Furthermore, adding yet another list seems like an
overkill. Why not have members automatically subscribed to meta? Another
reason I don't like this idea is that it creates an artificial distinction
between members and friends wrt how much mail they get, and there will be
too much to explain to each new member.

  In any case, people who DO wish to participate in the discussion are
exactly two clicks away from being subscribed to meta.
