Hmm... You're talking about Samba right? Not FTP or some other protocol.
Could you post your testing methodology? What version of Samba, what
Ethernet card how big was the file etc...

The above would not have have an effect on performance just on security.

I avoided this by copying to the NULL: device which is a sink hole for
data so no actual writing to the Amiga file system was done. I am still
interested as to how you managed your speed. Please post more.
