gav: seems to me people still don't get what the word 'sustainability' means. it is a word heard every day in the media but it is used unconsciously - it is a buzzword i guess. the reason i say this is because the concept of economic growth is still seen as indispensable. and yet these two concepts are in direct opposition. economic growth is the problem. we don't want growth - we want to sustain ourselves in a dynamic balance with the planet. growth for growth's sake is the self-destroying logic of cancer.
Good point gav. By sustainability you mean 'latching' in MoQ jargon? It is an issue I threw into the discussion a few posts ago. As you say, the difficulty is to latch an advance without closing the door on DQ. So the question becomes what, when, and where to latch. Economic growth has its own built in mechanism ensuring sustainability and dynamics. Many products on the market can be improved upon and are continuously. On top of this, new products are introduced (of course with its same imperfections) and the cycle continues. So what do you latch, where, when and how? Intellect must, can and is playing a role in this process already. It is attempting to find a balance between holding on to what has been achieved without these static patterns closing the door on DQ. At this stage it does so within SOM. It is setting "acceptable" standards of eg emmission out-puts, standards for wages and conditions, literacy and numeracy, building standards etc etc. We see 'family friendly' companies, 'green' investments, worker representation, consumer rights etc etc. These are very slow developments and are usually put in place 'after the fact'. But we have to start somewhere. I see these as examples of the little and big battles of intellect trying to control society and these battles will continue for many years to come. Education has a big role to play in this...great to hear that ZMM is on many school's reading list. The big problem is that we are still knee-deep (maybe even further down) in biological patterns. Society is still battling it out with biological PoV's.
