Ok...I had this problem. It has to do with where you told Mandrake to
boot from. What's your /etc/lilo look like? Can you even load up with
a boot disk? Did you MAKE a boot disk during install??? If not, you
may have to reinstall one more time, MAKING SURE TO MAKE A BOOT DISK!

The problem I had, fortunately, was a minor one, because I had a boot
disk. Fortunately, my tech figured out where I'd mucked things up. I
was telling Mandrake to boot from /dev/hda1 instead of /dev/hda5
which is where everything but the kernel was!
Make sure your /etc/lilo is pointing to the correct place for the
rest of your stuff.

In my system, lilo says "boot=/dev/hda"
BUT "root=/dev/hda5" which is where I was going wrong!
