As was noted here before (by Sarah) there was a great deal of difference
between slaves in the Torah and in the Roman world which didn't have the
Church and didn't need the church to justify the practice. As correctly
noted here by Sarah the slaves pre-Christianity/pre-Church were more like
indentured servants, than chattel. Chattel slavery came later to the
Christians and Christians were also largely responsible for opposing the
practice. AnaBaptists and Quakers formed the heart of the Abolitionist
Movement in America. Slavery was not necessary to maintain control but
ideas are always controlling. I have said this before but you can't seem
to get it - not that I expected otherwise.

As for slavery today, YES, it is bad where it is used to keep women in
bondage and prostitution against their will and the worst it can be in
Islamic countries, in the Pacific and in Africa. Best to concentrate your
concerns there with real problems than on divine rights which is largely
ignored except by fundamentalists.

And FYI slavery proved to be very bad economics besides a moral problem.
Slavery has never been very self sustaining. The maintenance of a breeding
stock does not make economical sense. The plough can cultivate more than
slaves can by hand and you have to feed slaves.
