I think Linda is on to something here. I've been thanked  a few times on
records, and the reason for the thanks varied from my being an ex-roommate
who fed the band and bought them beer and gave them a place to sleep after
I'd moved to a different city to my having written something nice about the
band once and having gone out to see them on a weeknight when hardly anyone
else showed up (and points in between--Twin/Tone bands used to thank me out
of politeness/obligation). I wouldn't have reviewed the former; I would
have reviewed the latter. Seems like it's a case-by-case basis sort of
thing.
