[27] More Fergie

Posted Monday, July 24, 2006 by ed:
Jonathan Evans, Darron Gibson and Danny Simpson will go to Royal Antwerp in
Belgium for the year. They're all young and this is the first step in their
careers. Ben Foster, Chris Eagles and David Jones will become part of the
first-team squad and we've yet to make a decision on Giuseppe Rossi. We are
trying to sign a couple of players who would give us something different and
bring a bit of variety to our play. But when you look back at our form over the
latter half of last season I am not unhappy with the players I have."

[26] Times talk all manner of United matters
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 24, 2006 by ed:
'RUUD VAN NISTELROOY is due to return to pre-season training with Manchester
United this morning, but his appearance is far from guaranteed, given his anger
at Sir Alex Ferguson’s portrayal of events surrounding his transfer request.
The Holland forward is understood to see little point in returning to
Manchester after the collapse of his relationship with Ferguson and was
considering doing so only in the hope of smoothing his departure to Real Madrid
or Bayern Munich.

Van Nistelrooy has been silent since saying after Holland’s elimination from
the World Cup a month ago that he wanted his future “sorted out sooner or
later”. He hoped that a move to Real would be finalised before his scheduled
return to Manchester, but with United having turned down bids from the Spanish
club, the 30-year-old has spent the past days discussing the way forward with
his agent, Rodger Linse.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the Bayern Munich general director, said yesterday that
Van Nistelrooy wanted to go to Germany. “Van Nistelrooy has told us he would
like to play for us next season,” Rummenigge said. “We have spoken about money
but it would be United who will decide.”

That decision appears not to have been made. Ferguson said on Saturday evening,
after United were beaten on penalties by Kaizer Chiefs in the final match of
their tour to South Africa, that Van Nistelrooy “knows to report on Monday —
absolutely I expect him to be there”. But the forward is understood to be
disappointed by Ferguson’s account of the summer’s events, having felt that he
was forced into asking for a transfer after being alienated last season.

Ferguson has no doubt that the matter is the fault of Van Nistelrooy, citing
the player’s prevarications over the past 14 months. “He asked away before the
FA Cup Final last year, then asked away through his representative and now has
done so himself in writing,” Ferguson said.

“I couldn’t tell you why he wants to leave or why his heart isn’t in it. All I
can tell you is he has asked away and we’ve accepted that. Frankly, if he wants
to leave, there really is no point trying to persuade him to stay. If a
player’s heart isn’t in it then you have to make a decision.”

The last comment is one that may return to haunt Ferguson, given the doubts
that Cristiano Ronaldo has raised about his future in recent weeks. The winger
has stated on three occasions over the past month that he hopes to leave United
for Real and, for all Ferguson’s insistence that there is “no doubt” over the
21-year-old’s future, it remains feasible that he will make a formal transfer
request — one that the manager would almost certainly reject.

These are difficult times for United, for whom defeat by Kaizer Chiefs in the
Vodacom Challenge final in Pretoria was the least of their worries. The bid to
sign Michael Carrick is close to being abandoned because of Tottenham Hotspur’s
refusal to drop their £17 million valuation, while there are growing fears that
Fernando Torres, the Spain forward identified by Ferguson as the man to replace
Van Nistelrooy, is likely to prove beyond United’s budget, with Atlético Madrid
insisting that they will not sell for less than £40 million.

The lack of new signings this summer, combined with the likely departure of Van
Nistelrooy and possibly Ronaldo, is causing consternation among United
supporters, but Ferguson maintains that he will not pay over the odds for
players. “Fans want to see new signings and a new face which makes a difference
to our play and brings more success,” the manager said. “But we will not be
stupid. I am quite adamant about that.”

Ferguson has hinted over the past 48 hours that he could enter the season
without making a significant addition to his squad, but privately he recognises
that at least two top-class signings — a midfield player and a striker — are
needed if United are to improve on last season’s second place behind Chelsea in
the Barclays Premiership table.'

[25] SUN on Rooney robbery
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 24, 2006 by ed:
'THE hunt was on last night for burglars who stole Wayne Rooney’s soccer
treasures — as experts warned the haul may be too hot to sell. Items nicked
include an England shirt he wore in this year’s World Cup and his Manchester
United shirt from the 2005 FA Cup final defeat against Arsenal.

Also snatched in the break-in at his parents’ home were a number of England
caps and his BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2002 trophy.

Yesterday, furious Wayne visited the £1.2million mansion as parents Wayne Snr,
41, and Jeanette, 39, were thought to be cutting short a holiday in Spain.

A spokesman for the 20-year-old ace said: “Most of the memorabilia from Wayne’s
childhood and teenage career has been stolen. It’s not possible to put a
financial value on the items, but they are of huge, huge sentimental value.

“Wayne gave them to his Mum and Dad as a thank you for all the support they
gave him as a kid in building his career.

“You can’t put a price on how much they mean to him and his family.”

Raiders forced a rear window at the house in the Sandfield Park area of West
Derby, Liverpool, between 5pm and 11.20pm on Saturday. Wayne’s brothers Graham,
18, and John, 15, had been looking after the place while their parents were
away.

Police urged the public to help trace the stolen items. A spokesman said: “We
ask people to look out in case they are offered for sale on the street, in pubs
or on the internet.”

But Chris Peers, of sports memorabilia website IntoSport.co.uk, warned: “No
sporting site would touch it.

“We only deal with firms who have legitimate access to memorabilia.”

Auction site eBay said it was the “worst place” to try. A spokesman said: “We
can easily track anyone carrying out criminal activities.”

[24] SUN match report from Saturday - worries?
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 24, 2006 by ed:
'To be honest, United looked anything but title candidates as they wound up
their South African trip with defeat in the Vodacom Challenge Cup.

True, the absence of their World Cup stars meant this was very much a
second-string squad.

Even so, they should not have been taken to penalties by a side good enough for
the English Championship.

Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes kicked off the trip in midfield and finished it
leading the front line, proving how desperate they are for a new face up front.

Ruud van Nistelrooy looks likely to depart soon. But if Fergie cannot replace
him with someone of the quality of Atletico Madrid’s Fernando Torres, it is
hard to see where the goals will come from.

Against the Chiefs, United’s rookies once again showed flashes but the likes of
Darren Fletcher and Kieran Richardson must now step up permanently to the top
level.'

[21] SKY on Juve appeal today
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 24, 2006 by ed:
'Juventus' lawyer pleaded for leniency on Sunday as the club continue to appeal
against their relegation to Serie B for match-fixing.

Last week, a sports tribunal meted out sanctions for Juve, Milan, Lazio and
Fiorentina, who were all found guilty of corruption, but The Old Lady were the
hardest hit, with demotion to Serie B and the encumbrance of a 30-point
deduction.

It is that handicap that is the focus of the Bianconeri's appeal, with Cesare
Zaccone, the lawyer representing the club, stating his case that the effects
could seriously harm the careers of the players who remain at the club.

"Just to survive in Serie B next season we estimate that Juventus will have to
earn about 80 points - equivalent to winning 27 of their 40 matches," Zaccone
told the five-man appeal court panel.

"The career for a footballer is short and some of our best players are world
champions.

"None of them wants to risk two years in Serie B or, worse still, relegation to
Serie C1 [Italy's third division]."

The court is hopeful of delivering its verdicts in time for the July 25
deadline Uefa has set the Italian Football Federation to submit its list of
teams to compete in Europe in the forthcoming campaign.

The Federal Court's president Piero Sandulli confirmed the appeals process is
expected to be wrapped up by Monday, with a final announcement made shortly
afterwards.

"The debate will be closed on Monday and the decisions will arrive between
Tuesday and Wednesday," said Sandulli.

Meanwhile, Juve president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has reaffirmed his declaration
that the club is not for sale.

"The shareholders dismiss the possibility of a sale and, as president, I take
full responsbility," he told Corriere dello Sport.

Gigli is keeping his fingers crossed for a positive appeals verdict and praised
the attitude of goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who has vowed to stick by the
beleaguered club.

"I hope we can remain in Serie A, even if it is more realistic to prepare for
Serie B, but perhaps without the points deduction," he added.

"That would allow us to come back immediately and keep hold of most of our
players."

Refering to Buffon, Gigli added: "Heaven knows, maybe Buffon wanted to take the
challenge that [former coach] Fabio Capello didn't want to take.

"I'm confident about Buffon, and I hope other players will remain as well."

goals and he is a personality. It would be great if we could land a striker of
his calibre. We have time, the transfer window is open for five weeks. Van
Nistelrooy has told us that he can play for Bayern Manchester United must
decide the rest and they won't give him away for nothing."

[19] SUN on 'doomed' Vieira bid
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 24, 2006 by ed:
'MANCHESTER UNITED’S bid to sign Patrick Vieira seems doomed after Barcelona
joined the race yesterday.

Alex Ferguson, still hunting a midfield replacement for Roy Keane, was willing
to pay £8million for Vieira.

The former Arsenal captain, 30, is looking to quit Juventus following their
relegation from Italy’s Serie A over the match-fixing scandal. The Frenchman is
now torn between a switch to Inter Milan or the Nou Camp.

Barca boss Frank Rijkaard is confident of getting his man after bidding £6m
plus Thiago Motta. He has already raided Juve for Lilian Thuram and Gianluca
Zambrotta.

Fergie is still in the hunt for Michael Carrick, though Spurs rejected his £12m
bid for the England star. But his interest in Atletico Madrid’s
£25million-rated striker Fernando Torres has cooled.

He explained: “The main issue for me is the composition of the midfield. We are
not looking outside of that.”

[17] Fergie on players getting on
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 24, 2006 by ed:
"It's unfortunate that, as the years go on, the players you grow attached to
grow older. It is a sad fact of life. It isn't a case of me being brutal, it
just happens. Denis Irwin got to a certain age, Roy Keane, Steve Bruce and Gary
Pallister retired, Bryan Robson became a manager. In our present squad we have
Ryan Giggs who is now getting to 33 — hopefully he can play for us for two or
three years because he is such a fit lad. But we know that, at some point, he
will come to the end. It happens. Because I have been with this club for so
long I have had to deal with that situation with many, many players. It maybe
gives a false impression of me being ruthless or having to make crucial
decisions. It is nothing like that. Most of the time it is just common sense —
players come to the end of their careers and it just happens."

[15] More Rooney extracts in MOS
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 24, 2006 by ed:
"I didn't do any proper gambling until about my second year at Everton when I
was earning fairly good money. We were living in our house in Formby and on the
way home from training, if I knew Coleen was not going to be there, I would
stop at the bookies and put a few quid on a horse.

"When I was sat at home on my own, watching horse racing, dog racing or a
football match that I had no involvement with on TV, I'd often put on a bet
just to make it more interesting.

"I wasn't putting on huge amounts, just a few hundred at a time or perhaps a
thousand now and again. After about a year, though, I had lost about £50,000,
which was stupid. When Coleen found out she was furious, and told me how daft I
had been. I said I would give it up, which I did. For about a year I didn't put
on a single bet."

"One day, someone in the England dressing room gave me the phone number of a
private bookmaker who would always keep things confidential. The Press claimed
the player was Michael Owen. I honestly can't recall who it was, but it most
definitely wasn't Michael, although I did know he used the same guy.

"Basically, I did it out of boredom, while I was sitting around at home after
training, usually with Coleen out and the television on. It made watching sport
on TV more interesting. I placed all my bets by text. I never spoke to, or met,
the bloke to whom I was sending my bets. I just knew him as Mike.

"At first, I'd just put on £100, but then it started creeping up into the
thousands. In the first few months I did well. On three separate occasions I
won good sums that came to £51,000 in total.

"I was paid my winnings in cash by a young lad who visited the training ground.
I never received any receipts or anything.

"Each time I gave the money to Coleen, who probably ended up buying stuff for
the house. She'll batter me for saying that. However, she did tell me I was
being stupid and should stop before I started losing.

"I carried on all over the winter, still betting by text. I knew by now that I
was losing, and so did what most gamblers do: I chased my bets and tried to
recoup my losses by putting on even bigger sums."

goalscorer, has a good football brain and he will improve by playing in our

from the IMUSA list

Do any current players have your on pitch charisma?
(dead serious) No absolutely not. You're never going to find someone like me
again.

Is that because you can't compare 90's football with today?
No it's because there's no one like Eric Cantona and there never will be again.

Would you manage Manchester United even with Glazer in charge?
I won't rule out anything but I'm not a fan of the American guy taking over the
football institution that is Manchester United.

Do you still go and watch Man U (sic) sometimes?
Not since Glazer has taken over

"The decision to buy Ballack and Shevchenko was made when Chelsea were a team
of champions. "I've always believed a team can not be built around one or two
stars but the situation at Chelsea is different. Ballack and Shevchenko are
coming into a team of champions. It's not a team that needs them to become
champions. We are already champions. Nobody at Chelsea had titles until I
arrived. John Terry had nothing, William Gallas had nothing, Frank Lampard had
nothing. Now the big boys are coming but there are big boys here waiting. There
is no difference in status between Ballack and Lampard. I just needed to add
some extra world class talent. There are different ways of approaching
competition. I read a quote from Didier Drogba saying he'd won two gold medals
in the Premiership, new strikers are arriving but they'd have to fight him for
a place in the side. Another way to approach things is to say what Tiago told
me last year - you bought Michael Essien and I'm thinking I'm not going to
play, so I'd rather leave. It depends on personalities. I have to accept what
they are. I can't change players' mentality. Duff has given so much as a player
and person over the last two years and I want him to be happy. If his happiness
is leaving then we'll try to find a solution where Chelsea is protected and the
player is happy. I want to be loved by my people. I want Chelsea supporters to
love me. If I go to another English stadium and people love me there it's
because I'm a loser at Chelsea. If I go to Old Trafford and the people love me
there it's because Manchester United are winning matches and they want me at
Chelsea because I'm a loser. I work for Chelsea and I work for English
football. I have responsibilities to English football."

[7] Fergie on Ole to Brondby rumours
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, July 23, 2006 by ed:
"I have not heard about that one"

and this from the lads at www.OldTrafford.dk on Saturday's Solskjaer story in
the mirror

'The story about Solskjaer to Brondby has been going in the Danish papers for
some days. However nothing has been said about a 3 year contract and a wage of
50.000, which I believe is is just something The Mirror had to write to make
the story interesting…

The director of sports in Brondby, Anders Bjerregaard, refuted the reports 2
days ago, saying that it was just a joke between two good friends (Meulensteen
and Solskjaer) and they knew they couldn’t get him.

However he did say, that a loan deal for Rossi was interesting.'

[6] Foster may not go on loan to Watford

Fergie

"We have to think about keeping Ben because there has been no progress with
Kuszczak. West Brom have turned down our offer, so it has to be a consideration
that Ben stays with us."

[4] Fletcher on possible new signings
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, July 23, 2006 by ed:
"There are new players coming in all the time at United. The club needs to
bring in players to progress. It's all part of being here. But at the end of
the day, if you're performing well, the manager will pick you."

[3] Fletcher on penalty defeat
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, July 23, 2006 by ed:
"As we saw in the World Cup, penalties are important in football. Some games
and competitions are decided that way so it was a useful experience for us.
Unfortunately we didn't win and we're disappointed about that. I know it's a
friendly and we didn't lose the match as such but at the end of the day the
winning team was the one which won on penalties. We were a little bit tired
towards the end after playing three games in a short space of time. But by the
time the season comes, we'll be really fit. The sharpness is getting there."
