For those who care...

....about the Reserve team - something I care about very, very deeply.

We have gone from 28 games last year (League) to 18 this season. I bet
Glazer/Gill/Othertwats are thrilled to bloody bits. Less (free for us) games
at Hyde for them to pay for.

In the season before (2004/4) we had 50 Reserve teams games.

Those complete **** who now have total control (ie they no longer have to face
us at an AGM) can do what they want. What they really want is to get rid of
the Reserves totally. Let's face it the Reserves are only for 'sad b*stards'
like me and don't offer them any
lets-sell-some-fred-the-bloody-red-duvet-covers' opportunities.

I hope they all rot in hell.

Keep the faith, Pete

"Without question Paul Scholes can still have an impact in the Premiership.
He’s 31-years of age and has some years ahead of him. Whilst his experience
last season was a worrying type of injury – because we had no knowledge of it
and we didn’t know how it happened – as we got to the end of the season it
started to improve and get better. Now he’s 100 per cent, he’s trained in every
session we’ve had in pre season so far and he’s back. Simple as that, he’s
back. It doesn’t matter who I’m thinking about bringing into the midfield, Paul
Scholes is fit for inclusion in any midfield in the world. He’s a fantastic
footballer and I’m delighted to have him back."

"The best form of fitness is match fitness and pre-season tours such as this
one where we will play top South African clubs. It is essential as far as our
hopes of starting the English season in a leading position is concerned. The
South African clubs will be up for the challenge and it`s up to us as
Manchester United to play well. This will be my second trip to South Africa, as
I played there when I was part of the England international Under-17 side, and
the people there are very nice. The fact that many Manchester United supporters
are going to be traveling around the world to a country like South Africa to
support our club, particularly on a pre-season tour, is simply great"

[26] Hedge funds go for Cobra
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 17, 2006 by ed:
how many bottles does £25m get you. That would be some party...

below from Guardian

'One of the US hedge funds that provided financing for sports tycoon Malcolm
Glazer's takeover of Manchester United has become a major investor in Cobra
Beer, which claims to supply lager to 90% of Britain's 6,000 Indian restaurants.
Founded by Lord Bilimoria, Cobra does not brew its own beers, but has expanded
rapidly by licensing production and building from a loyal customer base in the
UK restaurant market, which continues to generate almost half its sales. This
latest deal values the business at £80m.

The hedge fund, Och-Ziff, has been handed warrants over an undisclosed
substantial minority stake in Cobra. In return, it has loaned Cobra £25m in PIK
- or payment in kind - notes, and will take a seat on the board. Similar notes
were used to finance Mr Glazer's takeover of Manchester United. They typically
carry punishing rates of interest, though payments are deferred, often for
several years, until the notes mature. Och-Ziff's UK investments are believed
to be overseen by Anthony Fobel after he joined from private equity house CVC
Capital Partners last year.
The hedge fund backed a management buyout at budget retail chain Peacocks last
December and later backed Robert Tchenguiz's failed takeover of pub group
Mitchells & Butlers.

Lord Bilimoria, who retains a majority holding in Cobra, said half the money
from Och-Ziff would be used to buy back preference shares and the remainder
earmarked for investment. "Over a three-year horizon we want to step up growth
as much as we can. We are grooming ourselves for flotation ... with June 2009
as our target.

"The vast majority of our sales still come from the UK - and there is still
huge growth potential there - but five years from now I wouldn't be surprised
if half our sales volumes come from India." He said he eventually planned a
brewery in Hyderabad, where he was born.

In the UK, he wants to increase draught beer sales, currently in about a third
of Indian restaurants, and to develop relationships with major bar chains and
supermarkets. A television advertising campaign is planned for the autumn.

Karan Bilimoria started Cobra in 1989 when he was a 27-year-old accountant and
£20,000 in debt, inventing the brand to sell to London Indian restaurants. The
lager was initially brewed in Bangalore, but in 1997 production was transferred
to Bedfordshire brewer Charles Wells. Today, it is also made in Poland, Belgium
and India.'

Agent, Alessandro D’Amico, said: “We must think carefully about the situation

'Manchester United are understood to have made initial moves to bring Patrick
Vieira back to the Premiership. Agents close to Vieira, whose club Juventus
have been relegated to Serie B as part of Italy's far-reaching corruption
investigation, said last night that talks between the parties are under way,
with the proposed deal 'very much a live situation'. United, who are understood
to be close to agreeing a £12m fee with Real Madrid for the sale of Ruud van
Nistelrooy, have added Vieira - no friend of the Holland striker - to a
shortlist of possible signings that still includes Lyon's Mahamadou Diarra.

Diarra, linked with an £18m move to Old Trafford since May, revived speculation
about his future last week by criticising coach Gerard Houllier for claiming he
wanted to stay at Stade Gerland.

'I don't allow anyone to talk in my place,' said the Mali midfielder, 25. 'I
know the club relies on me and I rely a lot on the club. But today I'm open to
any proposition.'

[16] One time Utd target goes to Spurs from Chelsea
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 17, 2006 by ed:
from Indy

'Damien Duff, the Chelsea winger, will complete an £11m move to Tottenham
Hotspur in the next 48 hours after completing a medical over the weekend,
according to reports last night.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international is said to have been offered
a four-year contract worth about £60,000 a week.

Duff, who signed for Chelsea from Blackburn Rovers for £17m in 2003, was one of
the first signings sanctioned by Roman Abramovich, However, Duff has become a
peripheral figure at Stamford Bridge, and his cause was not helped by the
arrivals of Andrei Shevchenko and Michael Ballack.

Spurs have already spent £22m this summer on Bulgarian striker Dimitar
Berbatov, midfielder Didier Zokora and defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto.'

Indy also says Utd related

'Meanwhile, Ruud van Nistelrooy's agent has confirmed the Manchester United
striker is keen on a move to Real Madrid. The United manager, Sir Alex
Ferguson, announced on Friday that the Netherlands international had asked to
leave Old Trafford, with Real and Bayern Munich leading the chase.

It appears the Spanish club have the upper hand, with the 30-year-old's
representative, Roger Linse, saying: "We met with United to tell them Ruud
thought that stage of his career was over. We know Madrid want him and the
player is keen to play there. Madrid is a dream for any footballer."

The new Real manager, Fabio Capello, is certain Van Nistelrooy will be a
success at the Bernabeu. Capello, who recently left Juventus to return to the
Spanish capital, said: "He has scored a lot of goals and is a striker who can
succeed [here]."

Wayne Rooney has insisted that his stamp on Ricardo Carvalho at the World Cup
was not deliberate. "I'll go to my grave and still maintain it was a complete
accident," the England forward said.

"When I fell I had my back to the player. I could not see him, or where I was
putting my foot. If it had been a definite stamp, the fella would still be in
hospital. But he was up on his feet in minutes. It was the sort of thing that
happens when you are fighting for the ball."

Reports last night claimed Rooney's United team-mate, Cristiano Ronaldo, is now
likely to see out his four-year deal at Old Trafford after a heart-to-heart
chat with his mother.'

'ALEX FERGUSON looks set to lose out to Inter Milan in the race for ex-Arsenal
skipper Patrick Vieira for a knock-down £10million.

France midfielder Vieira, 30, was prepared to return to the Premiership after
his Juventus side were relegated in the Italian match-fixing scandal.

Manchester United boss Fergie was keen to put one over his arch-rival Arsene
Wenger by signing one of the London club’s favourite servants.

But it seems that while Fergie has been dithering with the Old Trafford board,
Inter have swung into action.

A source close to Inter revealed: “Vieira is the No 1 target to replace Juan
Veron, who has returned to Argentina.

“The sporting director, Marco Branca, has already met Vieira in London and now
Inter are trying to open talks with Juventus to do the deal for £10m straight
away.”

One factor in Fergie’s favour is that Juventus will appeal against their
penalty of a 30-point deduction on top of the undisputed relegation to Serie B.

That could delay the Inter swoop — and give United time to persuade Vieira that
his future lies back in England.

Fergie could also move for Juve’s Italian golden boy Alessandro Del Piero on a
short-term deal, with his team-mate David Trezeguet a fall-back signing.

Fiorentina hitman Luca Toni, 29, is another possible target for the Red Devils.

Toni was last season’s European Golden Boot winner when his 31 strikes made him
the first man in 47 years to break the 30-goal barrier in Serie A.

If ex-Gunner Vieira opts for Inter, he will almost certainly be going to the
reigning Italian champions.'

[12] Fergie happy for Ole
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 17, 2006 by ed:
"Some players freeze in front of goal, but Ole warms up when he sees the net
and he is now a terrific option for us up front. Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha
are our only definite strikers for the season at the moment with the situation
regarding Van Nistelrooy and if Ole can steer clear of injury, then he can be
our third man without a problem. The one thing we hoped was he would get
through pre-season training, first of all, but he has been fantastic and
trained in every session. Forty-five minutes was fine for him. There was no use
pushing him at this stage, it's his first start in a year and a half or
something. so I'm really pleased for him. You saw with Pal Scholes what a
fantastic football brain he has, but what we did in terms of using the squad,
and bringing on younger players at half-time, was the right thing to do after
the long journey to South Africa. I thought the pace of the game was fantastic
and that was down to the Orlando Pirates, they made it a very quick game and if
that is the measure for the first game, it is going to be a very competitive
tour."

“For me, United is the biggest club in the world. Sir Alex has two very
talented youngsters in Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, who will continue to learn
every season. United are the perfect club at which to improve as a young
player. They are the biggest club in the world yet still spend time working
with young players and giving them the chance to learn. Not a lot of great
clubs provide that opportunity. If I was an 18-year-old and all the big clubs
in the world wanted to sign me, I’d pick United. I would get the chance to play
for a big club in the top competitions and yet still get to work and learn in a
good atmosphere.”

'CRISTIANO RONALDO will stay at Manchester United — after a heart-to-heart with
his MUM.

Maria Dolores persuaded her boy to remain at Old Trafford during a massive
family dinner on Friday.

He had seemed set to quit English football after his World Cup bust-up with
United team-mate Wayne Rooney.

Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid looked ready to offer him an escape
route out of Old Trafford.

But last night Maria, 46, revealed: “He will be at Manchester with all the
players on the first day of training. He has a contract and he is going to
honour it.

“I am happy he is going back. The whole family is happy. He is OK with Man Utd.
The coach has said that Manchester needs Cristiano.

“Any player would like to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona but, at the moment,
he is at Manchester and he is going to stay at Manchester.”

Maria was speaking from her £500,000 home on Madeira, where winger Ronaldo, 21,

[6] Bobby Charlton talks youth

Posted Monday, July 17, 2006 by ed:
"United are the best producers of youngsters in England. I remember going to
see Alex at the training ground a few years ago and was told he was out on
pitch 11 or something. On the way over I saw this young lad weave past about
three players and smash the ball into the top corner and thought ‘wow’. Alex
told me ‘That’s young Ryan Giggs and we have just signed him this morning’ I
got exactly the same sensation watching us in the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals
last season, only this time it was about defenders and midfielders. There were
four or five of them and I remember thinking ‘wow’ again — I’ve never been so
impressed. I don’t know how other teams work, but we get our fair share of good
players because of the way we work and the coaching staff we have attracts the
best.”

[5] Times on transfers and Mourinho comments on Ronaldo

Posted Monday, July 17, 2006 by ed:
'THE FALLOUT FROM THE ITALIAN match-fixing scandal has brought a new dimension
to Manchester United’s recruitment drive this summer, with Patrick Vieira among
the players under consideration, but Fernando Torres remains the top target for
Sir Alex Ferguson as he prepares to wash his hands of Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Holland forward is expected to leave Old Trafford this week, almost
certainly for Real Madrid, with United pushing for a £15 million fee that would
improve their prospects of signing Torres from Atlético Madrid. They are
expected to open negotiations on that deal once Van Nistelrooy has been sold,
but with Miguel Ángel Gil, Atlético’s director general, reiterating last night
that Torres is “not for sale, not for all the money in the world”, Ferguson
must consider alternatives.

The situation in Italy has alerted Ferguson to the potential availability of
leading players from Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio, who have been relegated
for their part in the match-fixing scandal. The Juventus duo of David Trezeguet
and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are certain to enter United’s thoughts, as could Luca
Toni, of Fiorentina, but Ferguson is urging his board to explore all options in
his attempt to snare Torres.

Of the players in Italy, it seems that the most intriguing possibility is
Vieira. The France midfield player is among those likely to be released by the
Turin club, perhaps on loan, and, with Arsène Wenger ruling Arsenal out of the
running to re-sign their former captain, the situation is one that has provoked
much interest at boardroom level at Old Trafford, particularly since no
outstanding contender has emerged to replace Roy Keane as the midfield
ball-winner. Ferguson discussed the Italian situation in Durban on Saturday
evening, after his team opened their pre-season tour of South Africa with an
impressive 4-0 victory over Orlando Pirates.

“It’s something we are addressing,” he said. “It’s not clear what the
circumstances are with the relegated clubs. Will they want to loan their
players out for a year while they’re in Serie B? Will they be put up for sale
or will they be freed?” Those comments suggest that United are looking in
general terms, which will no doubt fuel rumours in the Czech Republic that
Pavel Nedved could be heading to Manchester.

The Juventus midfield player would offer something different to a United team
who have lacked creativity, although Nedved’s agent has stated that Tottenham
Hotspur are the only English club to have inquired about him to date. Ferguson
hopes to complete the signings of Michael Carrick, the Tottenham midfield
player, and Tomasz Kuszczak this week and, with Van Nistelrooy seemingly
certain to go and Liam Miller told he can leave, the remaining priorities will
be a striker and an aggressive midfield player in the Keane — or dare one say
Vieira — mould to partner Carrick. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored twice in Durban
on Saturday, underlining that he should not be written off after the injury
problems of recent years, but a top-class forward, such as Torres, is what
Ferguson wants to get the best out of Wayne Rooney.

United’s priorities could change if Cristiano Ronaldo continues to push for a
transfer to Real, but while the Portugal winger remains determined to move to
Spain, most of those in the United party will share the views expressed on the
matter by José Mourinho. “If he stays in England, I think he can turn things
around,” the Chelsea manager said. “Football players should play a lot and talk
very little.”

One of the first things I heard after they went out of the World Cup against
Portugal was that England are bound to win some silverware soon. What kind of
nonsense is that? In football you don't just assume it is going to happen for
you. Achievements must be worked and planned for, then grabbed by taking the
initiative on the field. Of course England are capable of once again winning a
major tournament, but the long, hard journey starts here.

Rio Ferdinand got it right when he said there is a lot more to come from the
current squad and hopefully Steve McClaren will do better with the talent
available. There has never been a shortage of fine English players. Every
foreigner who plays in the Premiership admits it is difficult to survive. There
is always tremendous pressure on the ball and in any game you need impeccable
technique and a strong mentality. I still believe top English footballers such
as Steven Gerrard are among the world's best. We just didn't see it in Germany.

The positive for England is that they are already further down the road to
success than 90% of countries simply because of the quality of their
footballers. But people need to stop going over the top about certain stars.
Sven-Göran Eriksson said we shouldn't be too critical of Wayne Rooney because
England "needs him". Rooney is great but if you keep building up a player they
will feel they are indispensable and it will become a big burden on him. We
should take the pressure off Rooney's young shoulders and instead of saying
England cannot do without him and being soft when he gets sent off, treat him
just like any other player. That is what players want: they don't want to be
treated differently. The team should be the star - always.

McClaren has some great young players with which to fashion a new collective,
starting with Aaron Lennon. One disappointment of the World Cup was that
Lennon, like Lionel Messi, did not get enough chances to play. He was denied
the opportunity to become one of the tournament's young sensations. Readers
must understand that, for a coach, it is not easy to gamble with youngsters,
that often you go back to experienced players because you know what they can
do. So it will be difficult for McClaren to find the balance between bringing
through new players and keeping happy established ones he might need to rely
upon. You could say, "Bring Lennon in now and get rid of Beckham". But doesn't
Beckham still have something to offer? He laid on more goals in Germany than
any other England player.

McClaren's record suggests he knows how to bring through youth. Though there
were disappointments, by the end of last season you could see the kids making
big strides helped by veterans such as Gareth Southgate. England have so many
big talents emerging: Lennon, Steven Taylor, Tom Huddlestone, Darren Bent,
Jermain Defoe, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Stewart Downing, Andy Johnson, Michael
Dawson and Curtis Davies are just a few. Perhaps Theo Walcott can also be part
of McClaren's future and possibly Carlton Cole. The question is: do England
have a vision? What strategy are McClaren and the FA going to put in place to
develop a new team? A few years ago England started using a standard 4-3-3
formation for every side between under-15 and under-20 level, and that's a
start (although I've heard some of the junior teams are going back to 4-4-2).
But there needs to be continuity and clarity in not just the formations learnt
by players coming through the system but also the principles. Do England
believe in wingers? Do they want to use a pressing game? If so, where will
their players press and when? The most important thing is England's players
develop more tactical flexibility. At the top level, a rigid 4-4-2 is dead. The
successful teams at the World Cup played with flexible systems, France with
4-4-1-1, Italy sometimes with a diamond.

It is encouraging that McClaren played different systems with Middlesbrough and
was never afraid to change things during games, especially during their Uefa
Cup run. However, he worked as Sven's assistant while England were tactically
predictable (though I know it is difficult for an assistant coach to try to
overrule his manager). I certainly hope McClaren was not satisfied with
England's over-cautious approach in Germany. In coaching you talk about playing
in " blocks". Brazil, for instance, played with a 6-4 block - six defensive
players and four attackers - and when one of their full-backs overlapped it
became a 5-5. France use a 6-4 block. Italy, Argentina and Holland had 7-3
blocks. England? They started the group stages with Michael Owen and Peter
Crouch up front and the midfield sitting deep, an 8-2 block. Then when Rooney
came back we had the extraordinary sight, in the knockout games, of a major
side trying to win the World Cup playing a 9-1 block.

We don't need a revolution. Everyone saw the difference in penetration whenever
Lennon came on. Play with one winger and give one midfielder (I'd suggest
Gerrard) genuine attacking freedom and you've got a 7-3 block. Then, when
England are strong enough, McClaren can think about playing with two wingers,
or two strikers together with his attacking midfielder and winger, to make a
6-4 block.

I'm not saying attacking football always pays off. Sadly, the four teams who
made the most chances per game at the World Cup were Germany, Spain, Ivory
Coast and Ghana - in that order - and only Germany reached the last four. The
finalists, Italy and France, both play "transition football" where, much like
Jose Mourinho's Chelsea, you look to win the ball and launch quick attacks.

England must be more positive than under Sven to achieve success. They need
more imagination from midfield, more penetration and more flank play. You
should never lose the old English ingredients: character, defensive strength,
dedication. No player is more dedicated than an English player.

I don't agree foreign imports to the Premiership are harming England's chances.
When I came over to play for West Brom in the 1980s, I was one of only nine or
10 players from abroad in the English league and I can tell you the influx
since has improved standards. Beckham's generation at Manchester United learnt
from Eric Cantona. Last season at Tottenham players such as Lennon and Michael
Carrick benefited from Edgar Davids. Do foreigners stop English talent
developing? No.

More work is needed in the academies, particularly when it comes to developing
youngsters' skills. In England they still think of skills as funny stuff,
tricks. In Holland skills equal technique.

Spurs have one of the best technical skills coaches in the world, Ricardo
Moniz, who learnt from the great pioneer Wim Coerver. Manchester United had
another Dutch skills specialist Rene Meulensteen. We were reserve champions of
southern England, United of the whole country. It is important to demonstrate
skills to young players in a way that goes beyond learning tricks. Moniz can
put on a session where they are not only shown the technique but also where a
skill might fit into a game. He is amazing. He can do 90 different skills and
teach kids every single one. Our target is for every player to master the ball
in every situation on the pitch under pressure.

So, to sum up: have a vision, give youngsters a chance, play more
adventurously, learn from the foreigners, develop skills. This way England can
finally win the big prize. Good luck to McClaren. It would be a shame if we are
having the same inquest in 2010.

[21] SKY on Torres
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, July 16, 2006 by ed:
'Atletico Madrid have moved quickly to deny the latest link between Manchester
United and Fernando Torres - insisting they would not sell him for 'all the
money in the world'.

English reports suggested that Sir Alex Ferguson was ready to bid in excess of
£20 million for the Spanish striker - who had a sensational World Cup finals
scoring three goals.

With Ruud van Nistelrooy preparing to leave Old Trafford, resources are not an
issue for The Red Devils - and Ferguson was ready to test Atletico's resolve.

However, the capital club have always maintained a strong stance over their
young skipper and it would seem they intend to fend off any interest and keep
him at The Vincente Calderon for at least another season.

"I do not speak about the rumours in the press, but I would reiterate that
Fernando Torres is not for sale," Atletico director general Miguel Angel Gil
told skysports.com.

"Not for all the money in the world."

Newly appointed coach Javier Aguirre is indeed relishing the prospect of
working with Torres.

"The club has told me that El Nino play this season with us," he said.

"I am preparing all our schemes with his presence in Atletico."

[20] The next Roy Keane... heading off

from BBC

'Manchester United are ready to listen to offers for midfielder Liam Miller.

Miller, 25, has struggled to live up to the reputation he arrived with when he
moved to Old Trafford from Celtic in the summer of 2004.

The Republic of Ireland international has made just 22 first-team appearances
and spent the latter half of last season on loan at Leeds.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to get a deal sorted out before the
transfer window closes in August.

United's expectations of Miller were demonstrated by their pursuit of him,
which saw him sign a pre-contract agreement six months before his arrival.

But he seemed overawed by his surroundings and, despite the absence of a large
number of senior players, was only a substitute in the opening game of United's
South African tour.

Leeds' defeat by Watford in the Championship play-off final at the end of last
season effectively scuppered any chance of a permanent move to Elland Road.'
