Mid-Tier Question - Passing Values
Good morning listers! Here's my situation. A web-based service catalog is going to be implemented in the next few weeks here at work. It will have a laundry list of links (i.e. - I need a phone, I need new software installed, I need a new monitor, etc.) The goal is that when a link is clicked, it will launch a mid-tier browser in a custom form I've developed that will have certain fields pre-filled and one or two others where the end user can free-type text. I used the ability of using the Mid-Tier URL to pass data to one of the pre-filled fields on that form. This field is the one that contains the name of the request as presented in the service catalog. Here's an example: http://mid-tier-server/arsys/forms/production server/NFCUTestWeb?F536870913=I%20need%20a%20phone This works beautifully. However, I am thinking ahead about the other requests we have now and the need to encode a new URL for each and any for the future (in other words, field id 536870913 would need to say I need new software installed or I need a new monitor) Not that hard to do but it could be an admin headache. My question is this: instead of having a hard-coded URL for each service catalog request, is there any way to build a generic URL so that the text in that service catalog link is passed to that field I referenced ? We're running Mid-Tier 7.0.01 patch 001. The service catalog page is external to our mid-tier server. Appreciate the help. Re: Upgrade to 7.1 and licenses
The licensing format is profoundly different; HOWEVER, when you upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1 Remedy very kindly upgrades your licenses for you. Be aware that after your upgrade you will need to order new licenses in the 7.1 format. If you have any unapplied 7.0 licenses lying around your desk, you will not be able to apply them after the upgrade. You will have to purge them and apply 7.1 licenses. One more thing: Prior to 7.0 you applied licenses through the Admin tool. In 7.0 you could apply licenses through the User tool or the Admin tool. In 7.1, you apply licenses ONLY through the User tool. This is a shift in the way you'll think about licensing. Re: Mid-Tier Question - Passing Values
Joseph, I would suggest a different approach than what I think your trying to do. I would suggest that the external web site only pass a value (any value as long as it is unique to the type of request being requested) into only one ARS field. Then have active links that take that value and sets other values based on it's value. This way the web site has a contract to pass values from a known set of values that you expect and keep all of the other data in an AR System form. This way when you want to change the values used for I need a new monitor you do not need to change the web site at all. Just the data that is looked up from the AR System form. For what it is worth... I would even go so far as to try to get the web site people to use the 'Request ID' value for the type of request that is pre-registered in the AR System form. That way the URL's do not need to be encoded at all. They would look like the following: http://mid-tier-server/arsys/forms/production_server/NFCUTestWeb?F536870913=001 Your workflow could use the 'Request ID' column to find the other text (very efficient) and you have a built in process to create the record then up date the web site.. and all works for any number of records. :) But maybe it is just me . :) HTH. -- Carey Matthew Black Remedy Skilled Professional (RSP) ARS = Action Request System(Remedy) Love, then teach Solution = People + Process + Tools Fast, Accurate, Cheap Pick two. We're not able to use Apache Tomcat so we're using ServletExec AS with ARS v7.0.1 right now. We're having some memory leak problems so I'll be applying SE AS Patch 5.0.0.14 today which has a bug fix for abandoned sessions not being cleaned up. While downloading the update, I noticed they released SE v6 recently which is supposed to be faster and works with the new operating systems, Java versions, etc. Anyone set up a midtier with SE AS v6 yet and did you see a performance improvement? Is there a BMC/Remedy license equivalent for version 6 like was provided for version 5? I've sent a couple of emails to New Atlanta asking about the license as well since their web site stated v5 users could get a free v6 license but I'm not sure that applies to the license included with the BMC/Remedy installation. //SIGNED// Craig Carter Software Engineer, RSP ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Platinum Sponsor: RMI Solutions ARSlist: Where the Answers Are
Re: Mid-Tier Question - Passing Values
It would depend on how your catalog page is created. If your Catalog page is built using HTML forms then the catalog filed could be referenced (depending on how the field is named) as FormName.CatalogFieldName.value so you could build the URL dynamically. function Build_URL() { var return_value = http://mid-tier-server/arsys/forms/production server/NFCUTestWeb?F536870913= + FormName.CatalogFieldName.value; return (return_value) } ASP, PHP, Java, and other web page tools/environments/languages can have other ways of doing the same thing. I used the ability of using the Mid-Tier URL to pass data to one of the pre-filled fields on that form. This field is the one that contains the name of the request as presented in the service catalog. Here's an example: http://mid-tier-server/arsys/forms/production server/NFCUTestWeb?F536870913=3DI%20need%20a%20phone This works beautifully.
Just a few corrections on this: If you have any unapplied 7.0 licenses lying around your desk, you will not be able to apply them after the upgrade. Actually, you can import license files prior to 7.1.00 into 7.1.00. This is documented in the Configuring Guide, page 39. In 7.1, you apply licenses ONLY through the User tool. To be technically correct, you can apply licenses through either the Remedy User client, the web client or any other client through the Administration Console. A savvy programmer could even apply licenses through other means by writing directly to the form (e.g. during installation of a deployable application). -David J. ARS 7.0.1 changes to filters require client log-out to take effect
Listers, I have a strange puzzle. I and a colleague have been working on an issue all week involving a series of filters. My colleague resolved the issue a few moments ago, tested it, and reported success. I tested it and saw the old error, to which she replied Log out of your user client and back in. Are you running a server group? It does take some time for other servers in a server group to update their cache, so you could see behavior similar to this if you're logged into a different server than the workflow was saved on. Thanks David, I contacted New Atlanta and they confirmed we would need to purchase licenses for version 6. I'd already read those two whitepapers but New Atlanta's statement that v6 was faster than v5 prompted me to ask if anyone had actually tried it. I also knew your Statement of Direction said you were on your own with licenses but that is a couple of years old now and something could have changed. :o) I'd love to use the default install and Tomcat but alas, we've so far been DENIED! //SIGNED// Craig Carter Software Engineer, RSP -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arsl...@arslist.org] On Behalf Of Easter, David Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2009 11:07 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: ServletExec v6/License Is there a BMC/Remedy license equivalent for version 6 like was provided for version 5? I and a colleague have been working on an issue all week involving a series of filters. My colleague resolved the issue a few moments ago, tested it, and reported success. I tested it and saw the old error, to which she replied Log out of your user client and back in. It's been my experience that changes to active links require the user to reset the form or application to clear the cache, but changes to filters occur purely on the server side and thus do not require clearing of the cache. Has this changed with 7.X? Is this specific to our environment? Are we in some way special? Anyone have solaris version of Helpdesk 5.05.01
** Help We are moving Remedy from HPUX to Solaris (we changed hardware vendors). Our current environment is ARS 6.3, HD 5.05.01, mid-tier 6.3. I was able to download ARS 6.3 for solaris from the BMC website but they no longer have HD 5.05.01. I contacted my BMC sales rep but she told me they no longer have HD 5.05.01. My original timeline doesn't include a HD upgrade just a straight move from HP to Sun. Does anyone on the list have a copy of HD 5.05.01 for solaris that they would be willing to send me? Re: Migrator 7.1 does not create fields for new form on first try
I was instructed by support to use 7.1 Migrator on 7.0.3 server. Worked great until I turned on archiving and audit. Ended up corrupting a couple years of archive records that we were never able to get back. Re: Single Sign-on...
David, Consider the following scenario: A client implements an SSO integration and naturally has to make various modifications to the out of the box sample code. Question 1: Will BMC rubber stamp the SSO implementation as secure and fit for purpose? The solution is deployed in an enterprise with thousands of users and after a while they discover that some users are being asked to provide Windows login credentials when accessing the Midtier. A call is placed to BMC support who can not diagnose the situation. Question 2. Can the user escalate the problem and get a priority resolution from BMC? Thanks !! However, if an issue is found with a supported portion of AR System (the AREA plug-in server, Mid-Tier, DLL integration with Remedy User, etc.) while using the sample code - and the issue can be isolated from the sample code or customer generated code - then, of course, BMC Support would treat the issue as a supported one. As has been the tradition in Support, most Support technicians will also attempt to provide best effort in answering questions or helping customers with issues even if not officially supported. -David J. Remedy Pinnacle Integration
Listers, Has anyone out there done a Remedy and Pinnacle integration? We are running ARS ITSM 7.0.1 and have Pinnacle 5 (but are upgrading to 6). Our folks in Telecomm are looking to purchase the Pinnacle API but essentially all it will do is create an incident management ticket and close it when the Pinnacle entry is completed. Is this something we could complete via the Remedy API instead? Anybody out there have any advice before purchasing the Pinnacle API? Thanks, -Matt Matthew C.
