Re: [css-d] New website

2016-03-27 Thread Karl DeSaulniers
Hi Tom,
Thanks. Its set up to allow user control. If the user doesn't align things it
will continue from where they slide to.
To center after misalign, select the same category. It will go to the beginning
of the slide,
but you can then use the arrows to navigate that whole slide. Kind of a either
or situation right now.

I haven't figured out how to get the slides inside a slide to snap position yet.
When I do, I will try to set it up so that whatever slide is closest to the
window edge gets centered,
but not have each image snap into place like the main page does. That would be
a little cumbersome
for someone who just wanted to slide to an image near the end and show it off.
Like my friend showing off his flyer.

Last thing I need to hear is "Dude.. it takes for ever to scroll to my flyer.
It stops at every image before it." lol

Thank you all for your helpful comments and opinions.
Whether you were contributing or learning.

Best,

Karl DeSaulniers

I still have issue with this...

If I use the arrows, the images stay in this placement, as opposed to
centering in the screen. Along with the load time as mentioned.

You might clear your cache and then run the site. That way everything has

Yes (I thought that was clear from my original message. [1]); I would in
addition suggest that once something such as "Social media" is allowed
to partially overlay "Design Drum" the latter be faded out completely
(seeing a part of it is just annoying), but the load time is far and
above anything else that needs attention, IMHO.

Well that is better than it being worse.. :)

The animation is via jQuery/TweenLite and it is only on the logo, drums, intro
splash and fading of the page.
The scrolling is via scrollLeft and scrollTop with javascript/jquery. Pretty
natural movements for a presentation.
Which is what my site really is under the hood. A slide presentation in html. :)

I want the main areas to slide in and out, it's just proven to be too difficult
to get it to do such without the previews speeding by.
Well, too difficult to implement right now. I need the site up to look for
work. Old site was not cutting the cake.

visitor, not turn them away. Because of other animations in other sites,
tolerances for unrequested animations that make you aware of that it is an

Hi All,
Thank you for taking the time to look and comment.
Opinions are what I am seeking. :)

Truthfully this is an experimental website. Something I wanted to see if I
could pull off.
Definitely not your standard website or navigation for that matter.
I agree the images need to snap as well. Something that I wanted to implement,
just hadn't yet. So I will definitely look into that.

Also looking into hiding the previews when scrolling to and fro to eliminate
confusion there.
May also eliminate the side nav buttons on small screens and incorporate them
into
a pop-up nav on the footer, but haven't decided yet.

I fixed the logo issue and sizing of screen in my edits, just haven't posted
yet.

Thank you again to all who looked and/or commented. I know you didn't have to

Re: [css-d] New website

2016-03-01 Thread Greg Gamble
Very confusing navigation. I clicked on a bottom link and all kinds of stuff
flashed by very fast, and It took me a while to figure out how to get to them.
On a Windows Phone 8.1 and IE the popup? is left aligned and covers the entire
page so only the Graphic-Web-Media links are shown.
The popup will shimmy left and right at random times, then settle down.

Color and contrast look good to be. Page is huge at 14.9 MB.
Tools.pingdom.com shows over 160 page requests, with a third of those having an
error connecting.
And for what it's worth ... if I see a countdown timer for a page load, I
usually just leave. Not because it's a flash page, but because it's dead time
that I can't do anything.

Lots of potential, just needs some tweaking ...

Greg

Interesting navigation. I'm not a fan, but that's just opinion.

Nav is confusing on phone. A little "too much". Movements are awkward on my
iPhone 5s. Scrolling is, IMHO, non-standard. I expected "scroll-snapping"
between images, so I could use a natural, typical flick to go between
images and have the images "snap" to center. Currently, it is a bit
laborious and if I manually scroll and an image is off-center, using the
nav arrows after that brings the next image to that same off-center
location as opposed to centered.

I’m glad you asked. This is not how a well made server cache works. The
fundamental idea behind a server cache is to render pages and update the cached
page in question only when you make changes to the source. A web app that
can’t keep track of this isn’t a web app, it’s a hack.

Well, this shouldn’t be true for server cached URL’s, would it? With a proper
working cache, there should only be html, CSS, JS and media files to serve up.
DB requests should only happen after an update or a cache rebuild.

That said, I’ve been just handed a dreadful Wordpress site, with a typical
response time of 11 seconds and that have some in-page executing JS, that makes
total render time about 80 seconds (!). Compare that to my java driven site
that responds in 0.2 seconds and renders in 2. Also in my own site performance
per visitor increases or stay the same after initial load. In this WP site it
gets worse and worse.

Also, the cache in this site seem to not be able to improve response times.

I’ll definitely minify the Style sheets and use gzip once I’ve installed and
configured a new cache function. Thanks for those suggestions and reminder on
Google insight, Philippe. Thanks Mike for the tip on gtmetrix.com and to
everyone else sharing.

I find it very hard to get peer input in the world of Wordpress. You ask a
simple question and get a response 1-2 years later. I could build a new site in
another language in that time (and learn it from scratch). Where do you ask WP
questions and get a response? Maybe there are good email discussion groups for
WP?

Have you considered checking your database access? WP sites basically
get all their content from a MySQL database. If the database is slow
that will slow down your site.

Personally I would never build a site with WP. Here are a few reasons.
 - Everything is in the database which is slower than static files.
 - It uses PHP - the worst language on the planet.
 - No matter how much you customize it still smells like a WP site.
 - It's not the cleanest use of style sheets.

I like to write everything using server side includes (SSI) and create
a header and footer file to define the design which I include into
every page. If I need any dynamic content I write a script that does
nothing but generate that part of the page and include that with exec.
There is no style in any of those files. All of that is in the style
sheet which gets downloaded once by the browser and then cached.

For scripting I use Python, a much better language than PHP. Ruby
looks good too. Even shell scripting will work.

I also eschew Javascript but it does have its uses as long as the site
is still functional with JS turned off. I find that I can do
everything I need with CSS.

Have I started enough religious wars for today. :-)

Re: [css-d] New website

2016-01-29 Thread Karl DeSaulniers
Thanks Philippe,
I have ImageOptim and did crunch them. I will do again.
As far as the Gzip, I agree, however I was told to split
the css files up so there was less code to load and less load time.
Mind you when the Gzip is in place it make more of a difference.
Was I told wrong?? Thank you for your feedback.

Re: [css-d] New website

2016-01-29 Thread Karl DeSaulniers
Sorry Philippe,
The css you get to see was done by someone else.
Most of my css "from scratch" is in the admin area.
I did modifications to that css. You might be able to see the difference in
style of writing.
I cuddle my braces.

So your saying put all the css for all users in on css file then minify?
This is a WordPress theme that allows the user to select different types of css
or add their own I might mention.
I don't know how putting all the css together would work in this scenario.

Where can I minify if I am not using node.js?
I will do my own google search too, just wondering of any gold links out there
people have sworn by.
TIA

Oh, no, I don’t think so, particularly as you load all stylesheets for
everybody.

You could eventually split them up based on media queries, but otherwise there
is little or no benefit.
e.g.

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/Media_Queries/Using_media_queries

Something more you can do: minify your stylesheet(s). The browser/end user
doesn’t need all your comments… And it does make a difference. I have a project
under development, the stylesheet is about 135Kb; minified it is reduced to
75Kb, and then Gzip will bring it down to something like 40Kb. That applies to
JS feels as well, btw.

I use https://github.com/jakubpawlowicz/clean-css for that.

Re: [css-d] New website

2016-01-29 Thread Mike O'Toole

Karl,

I used a different speed test that gives a LOT of tips on each aspect of
the time to completion. There is a wealth of insight in the tips, in a
few cases they fizzle out (tips) but this list is awesome with feedback!
In my 1st test page load speed was 5.1 seconds, a second one 4.9 seconds.

https://gtmetrix.com/reports/tpsautoshippers.com/5MxjYmgX

The biggest takeaway in that was the first file took 1.2 seconds to be
requested and delivered. One site I have on shared hosting (about 1,500
sites total) loads the first file in 111 milliseconds, about 10 times
faster. I would try to get that below a 1/2 second, preferably 1/4
second (250 milliseconds).

I have target page load times of: non-profit (1.5 seconds or less); for
profit 1.2 seconds (usually have lots more trinkets, scripts and graphics).

On that test site a B minus grade on both tests (PageSpeed & YSlow) is
readily achievable with MOST themes PROVIDED your host allows GZIP for
all files AND has a caching firewall between the server and the Internet.

As to some of their 'advanced' score categories - few shared hosts allow
setting header expiration headers nor enitity tags. so don't swaet
trying for A minus or above, especially if you have multiple scripts and
css files loading.

Interesting. Thanks for the feedback.
I am going to see what Gzipping the files and images is going to take.
Right now I just replace the theme images with a fresh crunch and things are
loading much quicker.
Now I have to download all the images in the uploads folder and do the same.
Thanks for the tips and feedback everyone!

Ah, thanks Chris,
I guess I should mention this is a purchased WordPress theme that has been
updated and modified by me.
So some of the loading and excess scrolling and imagery was pre-built.

I tried crunching my PNGs and JPEGs, but I admit there are a lot.
Not sure what to do more than that. Any tips?

You really should look into the network performance. The site loaded quite
slowly here (Japan, on a 1Gps pipe, Safari 9.0). Crunch your images with
Imageoptim [1]. Gzip your stylesheets [2]. Merge you stylesheets.

I didn’t run into particular issues otherwise.

Listen — with the proverbial big grain of salt — to Google Page speed insights
https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=http%3A%2F%2Ftpsautoshippers.com

[1] I took this image:
http://tpsautoshippers.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/DomesticDelivery_slide2-1600x569.jpg?1454124914409,
and ImageOptim crunched it from 214Kb to 199Kb (that is 7%).

 1. footer... when u shrink the window and scroll right/left, text in

right/left when u shrink the window.
(maybe it doesn't matter cause nobody will shrink the window to
 820px?)

 2. i used TABLE and ALIGN attribute and TARGET attribute... TABLE and

TARGET is my choice, i really would like to open links in a new

 3. i used help from IE7 script (i'll never do fixed header, footer and
a sidebar menu at one page again! - damn ie...). i'm affraid that some

 nobody who does it?

 4. i'd like to add RSS, but don't know how yet...

As already mentioned earlier this morning, below is a suggestion rather
than a criticism [ I never tire of repeating myself although I am aware
others find it rather obnoxious... :-) ].

body {
font/*-family*/: 100% Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif;
/*font-size: 105%;*/
/*text-align: justify;*/
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
background: url(images/kratka.jpg) repeat left bottom fixed;

I heard something interesting the other day - as i have a new friend
that has done loads of crazy flash things for some pretty massive
brands. it went something along the lines of..
the big brands are corporate weazels but in bid to keep face they will
execute something that is hard to navigate, kinda weird and so on. the
theory, cos it has to be money after all they re corporate scum, is
that the rich will look at this quirky thing - think that they 'get
it' because they are that brand. but do they really know what the
artist is doing - does it really serve a purpose?

anyhow, the page is humble and intriguing. I found it easy enough and
although i remember the first time not being too impressed once ur in
and u see the rest of the quirkiness then it works - if u have
ventured this far then u are the right kind of person to be viewing.
if not u wouldnt have even bothered looking. I think it's kid of cool
- exclusive in a way. it is something i am battling with designing my
own.

there are peple, clients that aren't scared of the new, my dig my
style, might even oay me to spend time dreaming and being an artist
once more but then there is always the majority looking for functiona
nd surely there is a template that makes them say 'OK'.

it's toss up - but in a way presenting my cirporate work on an
slightly quirky, original site shows that iam capable - but left to my
own devices (is that the word?) I wouldn't bother - unless I was
learning something new in the process.

I think there are three interweaving factors that /can/ (and often do) compete,
that need to be taken into account during any design:

1. Pragmatism - are you interested in delivering your message to every single
last member of your potential audience, or are you happy to serve the majority?

2. Creativity - how much are you looking for the visuals to be a feature of the
site in their own right, as opposed to merely being a pretty wrapping for the
content? How much is the site an expression of who you are, as well as a tool
for communicating information?

3. Morality - how happy are you to enforce certain limitations, bearing in mind
(partly) how you would feel if it were you on the receiving end?

Most of your issues can be evaluated according to those factors. For example,
take the issue of the front-page navigation:

1. Pragmatism. Not everyone will 'get' this'. It's certainly not very
keyboard-friendly. And, I imagine, it's not very touch-friendly, either. Those
3 points will each diminish your potential audience to some extent, and to
different degrees.

2. Creativity. This is a nice, attractive effect, which certainly isn't
commonplace. It's a look at me kind of feature, and it offers a brief amount
of enjoyment for the visitor as they sweep their mouse across the letters and
discover what's underneath. It also adds a nice dash of colour, and is friendly
and playful.

3. Morality. Does it matter to you that some people won't be able to use this
interface, and may feel aggrieved or even angered? Are there improvements you
could make for keyboard users (clue: it may be as simple as adding :focus where
you currently have :hover in your CSS)?

That's just one example - your screen width issue is also ripe for this kind of
evaluation.

I'm not trying to answer these questions for you; these are your decisions to
make. But I think it's worth thinking about the design in these terms, and also
bearing in mind that, whilst these factors compete to some extent, they can
also be made to work together, keeping compromise to a minimum. Some of what I
consider to be the 'best' websites nowadays do exactly that.

BTW, I think that, overall, your site is attractive, funny (in a good way!),
and fulfils its purpose very well. Good luck in your venture.

- Bobby

Re: [css-d] New website

2010-07-22 Thread Lauren O'Donovan
Hello,

I think you've done a good job overall to the site, which is for an
excellent cause, and best of luck with future improvements.

I noticed that you have text in several images, but this text is not
provided in the alt attribute of the img tag. Having text in images is bad
for a few reasons (even if you do give an alt=):

   1. People can't highlight it and copy and paste
   2. Blind computer users will not know there is text in the image unless
you provide this text in the alt attribute of the img tag
   3. Visually impaired computer users (or those who like big text) will not
be able to increase the text size of text in images using controls on their
   browser

Instead of putting the text in the images, you can position the text over
the image with CSS and it will be much more accessible.

I'm thinking that you knew all this already, but were working with the older
stuff that existed on the website, but just thought I'd reply in case it's
useful!

Its my biggest project to date, and luckily, i've been given a free

Anyway, i've spent the last 3 weeks cleaning it up and making it as

Hi Dipesh, nice site for a great cause.

One problem I noticed was a flickering on your menu when hovering close to
the right side of it.
It seems that you have two different widths set for the link
ul.leftmenu li a is set at 136px wide,
ul.leftmenu li a:hover is set at 116px wide

you have a relatively trivial validation error with some of the images
having 'Alt' attributes instead of 'alt'.
