[ECOLOG-L] Technology question

2017-12-18 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Colleagues:

Often, I see or listen to interesting stuff - often ecological (sensu
lato) - that I would like to remember at a later time. Currently, I use a
piece of paper and write it.

Question: Is there a *nearly no thinking and cheap* technology that would
allow me to dictate (like an MD) into a device that understands my voice
and puts it into a text file? Apparently, the technology available is
complicated and expensive.

Ultimately, my goal is to bypass the dictation step and go from mind to
text, totally controlled by the human desiring to have his/her specific
thoughts put into digital form. My computer guru colleagues tell me that
they are working on this type of technology.

Be as it may, please send any constructive ideas to me at:
blayjo...@gmail.com

Gratefully,

Jorge

[ECOLOG-L] Using Turnitin in science classes

Using Turnitin in science classes

Dear Colleagues:

Finally, I have decided to begin using Turnitin in some of my science
classes, including environmental sciences. As a beginning user of Turnitin,
I have received valuable feedback on some of the technical settings.
However, I have not received feedback on what I considered to be areas
where the proverbial rubber meets the road (listed below):

1. How long a string of words do you allow to be OK.? I was suggested 8
words (no scientific rationale behind that was provided).

2. What percentage of similarity is considered to be enough to trigger
reporting a work to the superiors for "dishonesty" (or whatever it is
called in your schools; after checking with the filters, etc.)

3. Any sliding scale for smaller "offenses" re. percentage of similarity

[ECOLOG-L] Acalypterate insect wings: dorsal vs. ventral to determine right vs left

2018-04-01 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Acalypterate insect wings: dorsal vs. ventral to determine right vs left

Hi:

Several decades ago, I dissected many flies and mounted the dissected parts
on slides. For example, slide 1 contains 1 head, 2 wings and 2 front legs
(I tossed the rest of the body) of specimen 1; slide 2 contains 1 head, 2
wings and 2 front legs of specimen 2, etc. Unfortunately, thus far for me,
I did not label right vs left. While I have successfully figured out how to
tell the legs apart (right vs. left), I do not feel as confident on the
wings.

My understanding is that the veins project more ventrally. Assuming this is
correct (OK to correct me), saying it is not as easy as confidently
determining it for the legs.

If you have experience telling right from left wings, could you tell me how
you are able to do that in dissected wings? I can be reached at
blayjo...@gmail.com

Thanks.

[ECOLOG-L] Telescoping ocelli?

2018-04-30 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Colleagues:

Recently, someone else and I were examining some adult insects and noticed
that the ocelli are mounted in cylindrical protuberances. My colleague
noticed that some of those protuberances appear higher than others and I
agree. We will be doing some more imaging asap.

The idea occurred to my colleague that the ocelli may be
retractable/telescoping. Do any of you know of such cases in insects or
other animals? I know that vision is related to the environment in which
animals live and, in the case we are examining, such modifications (if
real) may have a functional significance.

Dear Colleagues:

Could someone tell me where analogies (e.g., from economics) came from into
ecology? I can think of many of them, such as:

1. comparing living things with machines - I assume as a result of 16-17th
century advances in astronomy,

2. comparing populations and above with well organized "societies", such as
the expressions "balance of nature" (<-- as I understand it, a totally
debunked yet cherished idea), "economy of nature", etc. This seems to me
to be influenced by classical economics.

3. comparing "decisions" of organisms with "trade-offs". I wonder if
there are cases where this is not true. It seems to me that such an
attitude leads to conformism in human societies, which is good for those
with power.

Overall, often I wonder under what circumstances where the analogies
brought into the sciences, how have those analogies shaped the course of
science and society, and, most importantly, whether the have been tested
rigorously (ajka, whether they are true :) .

Please, send any constructive feedback to me directly,

blayjo...@gmail.com

Gratefully,

Jorge

P.S. It does not escape my memory that Darwin remembered artificial
selection when thinking about natural selection.

[ECOLOG-L] Request ideas for doable college-level projects

Request ideas for doable college-level projects

Dear Colleagues:

In the fall 2018, I am penciled to teach a graduate-level ecology course.
As a general rule, the students are (thankfully!) :) highly motivated and
are required to turn in an "independent research project". Although I have
ideas and some students have already contacted me, I wish to request ideas
that I may offer them doable in, say 9 weeks. I would like to inspire the
students to aim for publication, even if they don't quite get there.

I have divided the ideas into:
1. Experimentally-driven projects: This may be the most interesting and
also difficult to complete in such a short time. Projects in interactions
between x and y (e.g., insect-plant) come to mind.

2. Natural history projects: Not experimentally-driven but equally
valuable, particularly if one is beginning to learn about a system. May
trigger future projects.

3. Methods projects. For example, which of of these two (or more) methods
catches more or have such and such effects.

4. Review paper projects. Any ideas are welcomed. Students have access to a
major library with major interlibrary loan system.

5. Historical papers. For example, what is the origin of such and such idea
in ecology? Students have access to a major library with major
interlibrary loan system.

If you feel you wish to send constructive replies, please answers directly

[ECOLOG-L] Nobel and other such awards

2018-07-22 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
 Nobel and other such awards

Dear Colleagues:

Several colleagues and I are working on a little historical paper about two
physiologists (both born in the 1870s) with very broad interests in
biology. One won a Nobel Prize. I am prepared to assert that Nobel Prizes
and other such awards tend to popularize the belief that the statements
made by the awardees are likely to be true (even if they are later proven
to be false).

Although I have read quite a bit on this effect, the literature tends to
emphasize recent decades, *not* the beginning of the 20th century. Although
this effect is very much to be expected (or like some people like to say,
"human nature"; note, instead, I prefer to say "the nature of some
humans"), it would be great to cite studies that address this (i.e., the
effect of Nobel Prizes or other such awards on the belief that the
statements made by the awardees are likely to be true, even if they are
later proven to be false) say in the first 25 years or so of the 20th
century.

If you remember any such papers from the top of your head, I would like to
read from you.

Science anxiety

Dear Colleagues:

In collaboration with a colleague, I am helping out on a little project on
science anxiety. In reading a large, 2016 work on this subject, the
statement is made about one of the co-authors of the work (note the
quotes), "discovered and named the phenomenon 'science anxiety' ".

Although I suspect that science, math, and, in general, learning about
_ (fill in the blank with your favorite subject, including the subject
matter of this listserver, besides the obvious entomophobia) is as ancient
as humanity, I will appreciate examples, as old as you may remember of
literature and/or behaviors that could be pigeonholed inside the big
umbrella of "science anxiety".

[ECOLOG-L] Ecology, evolution, and/or functional significance of having many tarsomeres or many antennomeres?

2018-08-02 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Ecology, evolution, and/or functional significance of having many
tarsomeres or many antennomeres?

Hi:

Numerous arthropods have elongated legs and/or antennae. Those elongated
structures are sometimes made out of a large number of units (-meres) that
may (or may not) be true anatomical segments (in contrast to a much longer
than usual segment). Is anyone aware of papers dealing with the ecology,
evolution, and functional significance of having many tarsomeres or many
antennomeres?

Besides issues of sexual selection (and the obvious use of those
characteristics to identify the organisms), I have not yet come across
papers addressing that in my search.

If you know of anything from the top of your head, could you send me an
email to blayjo...@gmail.com

Apologies for potential duplicate emails.

Gratefully,

Jorge

P.S. I just came across a paper showing the basic data on reduction of legs
in a group with typically elongated legs.

[ECOLOG-L] What is typically done?

2015-04-20 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

Some of you know that I run a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Although I
have published in a number of other journals, I do not remember ever
withdrawing a paper of mine after it has been accepted. Thus, I do not have
experience with the typical publishers' behavior in those cases. Note,
herein, I am not asking about authors not wanting their paper reviewed. I
have 0 tolerance for those and, when that has happened, the papers are
returned to the authors. Instead, herein, I am concerned about authors
whose papers are accepted, all reviews returned, and even some editorial
work on my part, etc. Background follows:

Recently, a large (ca. 25 printed pages) paper was withdrawn from my
journal by authors from a country other than the USA four days before going
to press. The reason given, herein I paraphrase, is the some of the authors
did not like to publish in my journal. Frankly, after all the work the
reviewers and I put, I was not pleased but, I wished them the best.

However, looking forward... several colleagues have suggested me to make it
mandatory the signing of a form (*by all authors, including their
functional emails*) *not only the corresponding author*, indicating that:

a. The paper is not under consideration in another journal.

Could someone tell me how common it is these days to send papers to two (or
more) journals simultaneously? I thought that was an absolute "thou shall
not" but apparently, I am in error. Could someone tell me why are some
folks doing that? By the way, I publisher told me this sort of thing
happens ca. 10% of the papers and that it is part of being a publisher!

b. Once accepted, only editorial decision can remove an already accepted
paper.

c. If you have other suggestions (or the actual forms used in other
journals), to minimize this type of author's behavior, please feel free to
send them along. I shall request permission to use/modify from the
publishers.

Any feedback, please send it to me directly (blayjo...@gmail.com). Thank
you.

[ECOLOG-L] Edible insects

2015-04-21 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

I have just been invited to a large food event where I am supposed to talk
about (and demonstrate, that means eating) edible (dead) insects.

Question:
Of the many companies available on the web that sell edible insects, do you
have recommendations (positive or negative, that means, which companies to
avoid)?

Kindly email any info. directly to me (blayjo...@gmail.com)

Grateful for any suggestions, sincerely,

Jorge

Dear Ecolog-Listers:

Are there repositories for long-term (say, 10 years or more)
population/metapopulation studies, particularly, but not exclusively, of
insects? Of course, I am checking in the web and in my own library yet,
most studies are much shorter than 10 years.

Examples of such studies follow:
1. Paul Ehrlich's lab at Stanford University on Bay Checkerspot
butterfly, *Euphydrias
editha,* populations in California

2. Long-term Ecological Research Program - http://www.lternet.edu/

3. Sadly, many unpublished PhD Dissertations and MS Theses

[ECOLOG-L] General Genetics (lecture and lab textbooks)

General Genetics (lecture and lab textbooks)

Dear Ecolog-Listers:

I wish to know if you have recommendations of *excellent* textbooks
(lecture and labs) for General Genetics for science majors. Although I just
finished teaching an upper division Genetic Analysis course and I am well
familiarized with what is available, I am not as familiarized with la creme
de la creme for General Genetics.

Ideally, I want a textbook that is (list is not comprehensive):
1. As inexpensive as possible (available online, softbound, etc.).

2. Easy to read, understand. and profusely illustrated.

3. Does not assume more than intro. biology (for majors) knowledge.

4. Emphasizes principles of genetics, model organisms, critical thinking,
experimental design, ecological and conservation genetics, etc.

5. Has a generous companion packages (incl. PowerPoints, online quiz
cartridges - not the ones that reside with the publishers but the ones than
reside on campus only, etc.). For anything online, technology is as close
to 100% reliable and intuitive as possible.

6. Does not shy away from math and stats (because I do not shy away from
those either).

7. Is not divorced of the historical context of genetics.

8. Highlights the importance of genetics in modern life.

9. For labs, all of the above and not just the usual genetics exercises. I
want a book that invites exploration and engages all of us in the field.
Ideally, with a manual for s/he that may be helping with setting up the lab.

If you have any feedback, please kindly send it directly to me,

Making slides of tardigrades

Dear Ecolog-Listers:

I am helping a student who is working on tardigrades. The student wants to
prepare slides of the active form of tardigrades (ideally permanently).
Thus far, we are finding Hoyer's mounting medium as the most common liquid
but the problem there is twofold: getting the chloral hydrate and the
slides are not really "permanent" (at least in my experience). Someone
else has used polyvinyl-lactophenol (I have no experience with this medium.

Questions:
1. Can anyone direct me to best practices for making (ideally) permanent
slides of tardigrades?

2. Another protocol calls for "ringing" the prepared slides using Glyptol.
I have plenty of experience with Glyptal. I am not sure if Glyptol is as
good as I think Glyptal was.

experts and they able to identify the plant to species.

If I provide images of the foliage (lanceolate leaves ending in a pointy
end, reminiscent to me of *Torreya*) and fructifications [currently, they

[ECOLOG-L] Question

2015-07-25 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Hello Entomo-Listers:

I am considering participating in BugFest (NC, USA, http://www.bugfest.org/)
this year and distribute products made, in part, with cricket powder,
so-called “cricket flour”. While some of the products have been purchased
and I intend to distribute them as is (e.g. chips out of the bag), I have
cooked the chocolate chip cookies made, in part, with cricket powder.

Question: In cases like this, is there a standard form that participants (=
people eating) would have to sign to exempt me (or my company) from any
liability if anyone becomes (or claims to become) sick? Any other things I
should do to minimize risk to myself (or my company) and protect the health
of people participating?

As a possible way to placate my concerns, I have been told to not only
explain to potential participants issues of allergies but also to have big
signs reading “Eat at your own risk” (“Coma a su propio riesgo”). Please,
send any constructive suggestions directly to me at, blayjo...@gmail.com.

Jorge

of the graph. See examples below.

[ECOLOG-L] How different does a figure have to be from a previously published one?

2015-10-01 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers

When authors send me papers for publication, I try to remember to remind
them to ask permission to reproduce images from the owner of the copyright.
Whether non-human or human entities, an email is generally all it takes to
say "yes". Yet, sometimes money needs to be transacted.

My question is, if the money involved is too much, how different does the
new image have to be to be considered as "different" from the previously
published one and be free from the concerns of copyright violations.

Your anecdotes (whether personal or from someone else) as well as
constructive suggestions, will be welcomed. Please send them to

[ECOLOG-L] How to know what species inhabited a place before the first survey?

2015-10-04 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

I am posting this (and another question in a few days) for a colleague with
minimal internet connectivity. How can anyone one know what species
inhabited a place before the first survey?

Background: As a limitation of any study, say we are studying "Area A" and
we do not know what the species assemblage was prior to the very first
survey. Thus, if "species 1" was not found within the area but was found
nearby at another "similar" site, is there a way to make an educated guess
as to whether "species 1" was likely there in the past?

[ECOLOG-L] Ex-situ (only) conservation programs vs. ex-situ conservation programs that release organisms back in the wild

2015-10-07 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

This is the other message I am posting this of behalf of a colleague who
currently has limited electronic connectivity.

Have there been reports given showing the amount of ex-situ conservation
programs in existence vs the number that actually end up releasing the
animals into the wild?

Background: Just looking around at programs for amphibians, it seems that
many have a "catch and keep" attitude. Sometimes this is warranted, as in
cases of the home range of the animal being infested with chytrids, but
other times it
seems to me that a careful release could be granted. Also, are there
scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals on animal (ideally
amphibian) relocation (= taking a species that was inhabiting an area set
for development, and moving it to a new area) programs?

[ECOLOG-L] Faster way to remove bubbles from gelatin placed on microscope slides

2015-10-16 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Hello Ecolog-Listers:

I have several hundred temporary slide preparations of insects body parts
mounted on aqueous gelatin. As we prepare to photograph, we have been told
to completely cover the specimen with the gelatin mounting and place a cove
slip on top. As we melt new gelatin to comply, the process is invariably
creating annoying bubbles, regardless of how gently we heat the gelatin.

If we stick to gelatin, can someone suggest a method to minimize bubbles
other than manually removing them?

Of we switch mounting medium remember, all specimens are temp. mounted i n

you recommend that does not (ideally) create bubbles (ideally cheap).

[ECOLOG-L] Has anyone seen this image elsewhere? Protocol when copyright holder of an image is unknown?

2015-10-19 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Has anyone seen this image elsewhere? Protocol when copyright holder of an
image is unknown?

Dear Ecolog-Listers:

An undergraduate working with me hopes to submit for publication her first
paper by the end of 2015. The student would like to *use one image*:

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/66498000/gif/_66498895_spidersilk.gif

The paper in which it appeared can be seen here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/0/21685308

I contacted the BBC, 'I&A Photo Library' ; News
website permission requests
and received this reply:

"Our capacity to supply images found on the BBC website is limited by the
quality of image available and potential copyright issues. The images seen
online may be BBC copyright, but are often screen grabs that are unsuitable
for high resolution reproduction. Online images that are not BBC copyright
are often licensed by external agencies for limited reuse on the web.

Unfortunately, on this occasion the Photo library is unable to confirm the
origin of the requested images."

Question # 1: Has anyone seen the image of interest elsewhere? The idea is
that, perhaps elsewhere we detect who is the copyright owner and request
permission.

Question # 2: Does anyone know what is the protocol when copyright holder
of an image is unknown?

If you have answers for question # 1 or # 2, please, kindly send me a reply
off the list to: blayjo...@gmail.com

[ECOLOG-L] Behavioral tapes data analyses programs

2015-10-24 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Behavioral tapes data analyses programs

Dear Ecolog-Listers:

A few weeks ago, I posted a request for suggestions re. tapes with behavior
recorded on them. Thanks to some of you, we are well on our way to digitize
the tapes. I am writing now with specific suggestions on behavioral
analyses programs that can do what I list below.

1. Put time stamp (can it do this in fast forward speed and keep track of
correct time)?

2. Keep track of length (hence distances, I had the presence of mind to
place a scale at the beginning of each "take") throughout the videos.

3. Digitally mark individuals (maximum number of organisms on screen is 6,
typically it is 4) so that the program (not the observer) can
aautomatically follow movements and, hence, give a crude estimate of real
distances and, with time also captured, speed, etc. can be calculated

4. As the digital video is rolling, the observer annotates the database (as
the program is hopefully doing 1-3) including what are the organisms doing
(e.g. mating, preening, etc.) and allows more than one activity per
individual to be marked at the same time.

5. Anything else I may have forgotten.

If you have any specific and constructive suggestions, please kindly send
me a message off the list.

[ECOLOG-L] Listserver recommendations

2015-12-14 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog Listers:

I have two requests for listserver recommendations:

1. From time to time, I come across concepts in biology where I suspect
there is an interesting historical background. While I am subscribed to a
few listservers in history, can someone recommend a few active listservers
in *history of science* maybe just *history of biology*?

2. Being a firm believer that if I think of something it is likely that
someone else before me has thought about that and, importantly, that there
is a solution, I wonder of there are listservers for computer applications.
For example, I have my digital life in several flash drives, etc. Earlier
today, I asked local computer gurus if they knew of expeditious (of course,
I know manual) ways to consolidate all of those files into one (with a
backup). The answer made me want a "second opinion". Any suggestion of
listservers that would have folks interested in answering the general
question, is there a faster (and better, cheaper, etc.) way of doing such
and such will be appreciated.

Please, feel free to email any constructive suggestions to:

[ECOLOG-L] The K of carrying capacity and Roman numerals of survivorship curves

2016-01-28 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers;

For years, I have wondered (sometimes aloud in my classes as students know
I like history) about the history of two ecology conventions.

1. Where does the K in "carrying capacity" comes from? I am aware of the
origins of the concept (http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/00045600701734356
<https://webaccess.si.edu/owa/redir.aspx?SURL=3LuKtVx2SoqLbG_ubJxITNwuQvX0WlQzFExwLXIf5XpYb4JjGyjTCGgAdAB0AHAAOgAvAC8AZAB4AC4AZABvAGkALgBvAHIAZwAvADEAMAAuADEAMAA4ADAALwAwADAAMAA0ADUANgAwADAANwAwADEANwAzADQAMwA1ADYA&URL=http%3a%2f%2fdx.doi.org%2f10.1080%2f00045600701734356>)
but I am not sure about the origin of the K. Is the K for constant
(Konstant in German, in the mid 19th century German was the "in" language
for scholarly communications in the sciences) or is K for Kapacita"t
(capacity in German).

2. Is there a reason for the positioning of the Roman numerals I, II, II on
survivorship curves (or functional response curves). Why is the I on the
top one (e.g. modern human and other organisms having a long life, or like
MLK said "longevity") instead of the bottom one? My only guess has always
been, well it is either I-II-II or III-II-I. In other words, one of the two
was chosen. But, heavens knows, maybe there was a reason.

Sincerely and gratefully,

Jorge

[ECOLOG-L] Carnivory and herbivory

2016-02-18 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

In one of my courses, we'll discuss nutrition and, inevitably carnivory and
herbivory.

Question: Can someone suggest science-based, intelligible web sources that
discuss this topic.

Background: For years, I have looked into this and the basic story (at
least for humans) seems to be that animal food on the average has a fuller
complement of aminoacids (particularly the so-called essential ones) than
non-animal foods. Yet, thus far, in none of the places consulted, the
chemical transformations of some aminoacids into others are addressed. In
other words, can the so-called essential aminoacids be produced chemically
in the body (or by symbionts) by chemically altering non-essential
aminoacids? Clearly, those mechanisms must exist in 100% herbivorous
organisms.

If you have some constructive suggestions, please email me directly:

Recently, as I was teaching about water conservation and use by different

[ECOLOG-L] Water use in chocolate

***

Hi Jorge -
Don't know of how much you this will be to you but I recently led a number
of tutorials on water use and water conservation. Below is a link from a
website we had students refer to when preparing for the tutorial.
cheers
Mark

http://waterfootprint.org/en/resources/interactive-tools/product-gallery/
On average, cocoa beans have a water footprint of 20,000 litre/kg. Cocoa
beans are first made into cocoa paste, with cocoa shells as rest product.
About 97% of the total water footprint of cocoa beans is allocated to the
cocoa paste that is derived from the beans; the rest is attributed to the
by-products. One kilogram of cocoa beans gives about 800 gram of paste, so
that the water footprint of cocoa paste is about 24,000 litre/kg. Cocoa
paste is separated into cocoa butter and cocoa powder. About 66% of the
water footprint of cocoa paste is allocated to the cocoa butter and 34% to
the cocoa powder (this attribution is done based on the relative value of
the two products). One kilogram cocoa paste gives 470 gram cocoa butter and
530 gram cocoa powder. On the basis of these figures we calculate that
cocoa butter has a water footprint of 34,000 litre/kg and cocoa powder a
water footprint of 15,600 litre/kg.

When we assume that chocolate consists of 40% cocoa paste (with a water
footprint of 24,000 litre/kg), 20% cocoa butter (34,000 litre/kg) and 40%
cane sugar (1800 litre/kg), we can calculate that chocolate has a water
footprint of about 17,000 litre/kg.

A 100-gram chocolate bar costs 1700 litres. This is the global average; the
figure in a specific case will depend on the precise origin of the cocoa
and the production circumstances

[ECOLOG-L] Environmental Sciences book recommendation

2016-04-24 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

I teach a one-semester course in environmental sciences for non-science
majors. For a while, I have been toying with the idea of revamping the
whole course.

One of those areas of likely change is changing the textbook we use into
one that non-only emphasizes *science* in a readable way for intelligent
people who want to learn that also incorporates

a. a global perspective (= not only the USA)

b. a diversity of perspectives (= not only, on the average, things are
improving, in other words, a finer detail showing that still there is a lot
to be done)

c. non-(hard)science (e.g. the social sciences and the humanities)

If any of you have experience using a book (other resources that are not
books are also OK) and would like to recommend it (positively or
negatively), please, feel free to send me an email off the list.

[ECOLOG-L] Trying to find a recent review on what make insect predators choose a prey item over another

Trying to find a recent review on what make insect predators choose a prey
item over another

Dear Ecolog-Listers:

I am trying to find a recent review on what make insect predators choose a
prey item over another. Thus far, I have found good papers (mostly
emphasizing vertebrates). If something comes to mind with emphasis on
insects (or arthropods), ideally a review, please send me a message off the
list.

blayjo...@gmail.com

Apologies for potential duplicate emails.

Gratefully,

Jorge

[ECOLOG-L] Looking for listserver resembling Ecolog-L but with emphasis on ecology education

2016-05-01 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

Up to maybe a year or so ago, I used to get useful emails from a listserver
resembling Ecolog-L but with emphasis on ecology education.

Do you know if that group still exists? If so, what it its name? It was
like Ecolog-Ed (or something like that). I have searched for it and cannot
find it. If someone finds it, could you email me off the list?
