[Finale] Lost a necessary instruction again!
Dear Listers, Please can someone remind me how / where to increase the thickness of staff lines, which I know I've done in the past. I've just used an old file as the basis of a new one and didn't check the staff thickness before I'd put in quite a lot of other effort. As soon as I printed a test part it was obvious the staves were ridiculously faint. :( Hoping to create and print lots of parts by tomorrow evening Greetings from England, where I'm off to bed shortly. :) Patsy -- Patsy Moore AGSM ARCM pa...@mooremusic.org.uk Conductor, arranger etc. Da Capo (Do All Come And Play Orchestra) and teaching accompanist www.da-capo.org.uk ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu https://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale To unsubscribe from finale send a message to: finale-unsubscr...@shsu.edu
[Finale] Urgent Telemann request
Hello Fellow Listers, Greetings from England. I realise this is not really a Finale request but something more general. Apologies if months when I've hardly glanced at the list mean that I've already missed any conversations about the 250th anniversary of Telemann's death and interesting repertoire. I'm using Finale 2014 currently so a source already available in Finale would be a bonus. :) I'm hoping that someone may be able to suggest an appropriate piece for the adult learners' orchestra that I started in 1995 and still run with my husband Ken's help. It has NO minimum standard and usually quite a bizarre range of instruments including some quite competent players. Ideal sources will be IMSLP and possibly CPDL (though my previous experience has been that it's possibly less reliable for accuracy - I hope that's no longer true). I might look for something longer and more complex on a future occasion but right now I shall ideally find a short contrapuntal piece, preferably originally for instruments rather than voices, for 5 or 6 parts (minimum 4, absolute maximum 8) and including rests for everyone. Rests frequently cause more problems than notes, which I fear may be a UK characteristic. Ideal time signatures would probably be 2/2, 3/2, 6/8 or 6/4, but I'm open to other suggestions and don't mind time changes. Ideal keys max. 2 flats or sharps as the group includes a couple of alto saxes. Modest numbers of 1/16 (semiquavers) possibly acceptable and we've been working hard at dotted rhythms in recent months with only 4 new players this autumn. The repertoire already chosen includes a set of variations that Ken has arranged, based on the song Waltzing Matilda and using quite a variety of time signatures, but the shorter and more straightforward items are by Mendelssohn (4/4), Rachmaninov (mainly 4/4 with one 2/4 and a few 6/4 - really 3/2 - measures) and Peter Warlock (mainly 2/4). Repeats and / or DC, DS are a bonus. Best wishes, Patsy Moore -- Patsy Moore AGSM ARCM pa...@mooremusic.org.uk Conductor, arranger etc. Da Capo (Do All Come And Play Orchestra) and teaching accompanist www.da-capo.org.uk ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu https://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale To unsubscribe from finale send a message to: finale-unsubscr...@shsu.edu
[Finale] Staff question
Hello fellow Finale users, I'm using (i.e. still struggling intermittently with) Finale 2014. I've just been preparing a revised Questionnaire in Finale for new members of my adult learners' orchestra. After 2 pages of assorted text I want to insert a short length of staff with a clef, or possibly of them in different places, for people to fill in their possible playing ranges, but so far have failed to do so. I've clicked "new blank staves" in the Staff tool. A little window opens saying: Number of Staves 1 (can be changed, but I've left it as 1) Topline to Topline Distance 1 (haven't worked out what that means but have tried it as1 and as 0) OK / Cancel / Help If I click OK, nothing happens. Helpful hints would be very welcome. :) Just off to bed in England Patsy -- Patsy Moore AGSM ARCM pa...@mooremusic.org.uk Conductor, arranger etc. Da Capo (Do All Come And Play Orchestra) and teaching accompanist www.da-capo.org.uk ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu https://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale To unsubscribe from finale send a message to: finale-unsubscr...@shsu.edu
Re: [Finale] Page view / scroll view mystery. Please help!
Hello again, I realised belatedly that I'd said i was using Finale 2010, whereas I'm actually on Finale 2014. I had checked that I hadn't hidden staves. David Bailey kindly checked the file, and was as puzzled as I was, but he found an ingenious solution which I've now tried, and it works. :). I think the file must have got corrupted in some way. The solution involves adding an extra staff in page view, which I didn't even know was possible, and which shows up as a third staff in scroll view, then copying the contents of my second staff into it. Pretty quick, and produced the result I needed. :) Members of this list have been a great help to me since my early days with Finale back in the 1990s when I'd never even used Windows before. [Finale] Whatever happened to "Optimise"?
Hello Listers, I've found out how to hide a single empty staff, but not found an equivalent of the 2000 "optimise" which would hide all the empty staves in however many systems of a score I chose, with one command. Have I missed a renamed equivalent in 2014? I tried the Index on "optimise" and "hide". I've just been looking at a lot of complicated stuff about Group Attributes, but I haven't been using groups and don't feel the need for most of the scores I'm creating. Quite often I'm transcribing music originally written for voices, or perhaps for piano, and simply have numbered parts which get allocated to whichever instrument(s) / player(s) from my current bizarre line-up happen to fit best (adult learners, no minimum standard and few limits on numbers of a particular instrument). The present 38 players are: 6 flutes (1 double pic and also, another bass flute), 3 oboes (1 doubling cor A.), 7 clarinets (1 doubling A & T saxes, another Bass Cl.), 3 more A Saxes (1 doubling T), 1 bassoon, 1 French horn, 1 tenor trombone, 8 violins, 4 violas, 4 cellos. The most elementary is probably in her 50s, started learning violin last September as her first ever instrument, with no previous musical experience. [Finale] Mass turning ties into dots? Possible? WinFin 2014
Hello Listers, My WinFin 2014 frustrations and annoyances continue, this time with a file imported from Midi. It's an orchestral score starting in 6/8 and continuing in a mixture of 6/8 and 9/8. When it's imported it mysteriously has a whole bar's rest at the beginning, followed by another 1/8 rest in the few parts that are playing at the beginning. Everything that follows is showing up 1/8 later than intended. There are also quite a lot of empty measures at the end of the music, which are not a problem, just a mystery. I've managed to remove the surplus 7 x 1/8 at the beginning and rebar, but instead of getting dotted 1/4 or dotted 1/2 for the longer notes I've got forests of ties, e.g. most bars with a single long note showing 1/4-tie-1/8-tie twice instead of dotted 1/2. I'm doing my best to removed the unhelpful word "should" from my vocabulary, but I hope I'm missing a way to turn the tied notes globally into dotted ones. Belated thanks for that, Jari - just surfaced again! The size change was just what I needed, but I still haven't got all I was hoping for. Especially in the Measure tool, which I find extremely fiddly to use, I'm looking at barlines completely covered by 3 handles that claim to be "transparent" but aren't, plus a 4th one sticking out to the right. I want to be able to see what's underneath without the dirty grey shadows on the insides of them. Unchecking "Transparent Handles" on my now slightly bigger than standard sized ones produces opaque ones that make the barline invisible and can completely cover a note head at the bottom of the stave. Groan... What I want are the neat, thin outlines of the opaque ones with a clear view through the middle, and no messy, dirty shading. Am I missing something? Just off to start another topic. Hello Listers, Because of endless difficulties with the change from Finale 2000c to 2014 (following terminal computer crash Nov.2014) I'm way behind with music preparation for my orchestra. :( Please can anyone tell me a way to make Finale handles bigger, and get them showing just a plain outline? At the moment I find them too small for ease of use and they seem to have grey shading within the square frame. Those are two among many frustrations. One of the biggest is the ridiculous Search set-up for the on-line manual. I searched on "handle" and got 373 results. Same for "handle colour". "Handle size" produced 523 results. The link for the first result listed says "Keyboard shortcuts and special mouse clicks". Re: [Finale] Weird speed changes - can't find the cause (Fin.2014)
Hello Listers, Nearly a month ago I wrote about weird speed changes in playback of a file I had created. David Bailey suggested checking for playback effects in any expressions added at the relevant points. I'd been caught by that type of thing in my old version of Finale, but did double check and found nothing to account for the changes. Also none of the various speeds in the playback were anything like the one that I had set up, and which was showing on the playback display. Today while setting out to do something completely different I stumbled upon a solution. In the Edit / Clear Selected Items menu was an item: MIDI data / Tempo changes. I cleared that single item and suddenly the whole thing played back at the ridiculously fast speed I'd set up in the hope of doing some quick proof-listening! There are still some dynamics coming out differently from what's on the screen. Perhaps in a few weeks I'll find a reason for them while trying to do something else... I wish I could have back the countless hours I've so far wasted trying to do in Finale 2014 things I found entirely straightforward in Finale 2000c. :( The To Do list is still getting longer. Hello Listers, I'm gradually getting to grips with at least some of Finale 2014, but am struggling with the playback of a minuet and trio written out as 6 repeated sections. There are several speed changes that I haven't managed to account for (yet!). I thought I'd set it up to play really fast, for a quick overview of the repeats and some proof-listening, but that hasn't worked, for a start. Has anyone familiar with 2014 got the time and energy to have a quick look and listen for me? I'll probably be off the computer for a couple of hours now, but would be extremely grateful for help with this. I want the playback as a learning tool for my adult learners' orchestra who are working on the piece. Document / Document Options / Lines and Curves I have the sideways extensions set to 0.028" (Finale doesn't like that and changes it to something with more decimal places) for both notes and rests. In my Copyright notice I like to have the C-in-a-circle sign about the same height as the capital letters in the remainder of the notice. I can highlight just the one character, and that's what shows up in the edit menu, but when I change the size and exit the box the change has been applied to the whole text block. :( The same thing happens if I just try to change the year to bold. [Finale] Call for scores for chamber orchestra
Hello Listers, The UK magazine Classical Music has an article in its most recent issue entitled "Contemporary Conundrums", wondering why so few contemporary composers write for the sort of orchestra that's needed for e.g. symphonies by C. P. E. Bach, Haydn or Schubert. It makes the point that many new works don't make it past their first performance because the extra instruments needed, in particular large percussion sections, make them too expensive to put on. The article is part of a section in this issue of the magazine looking at various aspects of amateur music-making in the UK. http://www.rhinegold.co.uk/magazines/classical_music/ The reason I'm mentioning this is that at the end of the article there's a call for scores from a London orchestra: "The Orchestra of St. Paul's, resident at the Actors' Church in Covent Garden, is inviting composers to submit works of six to nine minutes' duration, scored specifically for two oboes, one bassoon, two horns, and strings (3.2.2.2.1). There is no age limit. The judging panel will include the composer David Matthews and OSP's musical director Ben Palmer [writer of the article]. The winning piece will be performed at St. Paul's in June 2011. The deadline for submissions is Friday 14 January 2011. I used to get their envelopes about 200 at a time (because I also use them for mailing music), which was more expensive per unit than buying them by the thousand. Then I found a company that was buying larger quantities and was able to come to an arrangement with them to add my more modest requirements to their orders from time to time. At one time Staples in the UK also sold box files suitable for A3 contents (A3 is a metric size, approx 11.7" x 16.5"), with internal sprung clips to hold the contents in place so the boxes could be used vertically. It might be worth checking whether there's a U.S. similar size available from U.S. Staples? On a smaller scale, these days I also use the boxes in which A4 plastic pockets are sold as storage for e.g. bigger sets of orchestral parts. I use quite a lot myself and people who work in offices or schools can often bring me additional empty boxes. I hope you find something appropriate to solve your problem. Hello Listers, Does anyone know of a published arrangement for wind instruments (perhaps 8 or 10?) of the Sortie in E flat by Louis-James Alfred Lefébure-Wély, originally for organ? My husband is considering making one for wind decet (double quintet with doublings) but doesn't want to re-invent the wheel! Re: [Finale] Finale 2000c and 2004a playback mystery solved
Hello again, Many thanks to the various people who responded to my problem with playback. It now looks as if there were two problems. If they were related I still don't know how. I was getting silent scrolling some of the time (scroll line moving and bars counting off as usual), but that seems to have stopped, and some files that were refusing to play back audibly are now OK. From: dhbailey > When you say "playback ... was working ... and now isn't" do > you mean that the playback doesn't start at all? No pointer > on the screen moving with the music, etc. Or do you mean > that it appears to be working but no sound is coming out? I had a very frustrating time trying to sort out what was consistent in the problem. In the end I had normal playback for most files, and a small set of files all related to each other that froze the playback controls. The controls looked normal and behaved normally until I clicked "play". Then the controls were greyed out and there was no evidence of playback (e.g. no scrolling, no counting off of measure numbers). That problem had the same simple solution for all of them: change "reset repeats" to "ignore repeats". My husband had come across that problem before, but when he first looked at one of my files he was concentrating on the silent scrolling, looking at a very short section in scroll view at the beginning of the piece where no repeats were visible. He reminds me that I had had that same problem once before, where a repeat had been wrongly set up and it stopped the playback, but it was long enough ago that I had forgotten. > What playback mechanism are you using? Midi output says: Microsoft GS wavetable SW Synt I had checked the volume control and it wasn't muted, but I might well not have done, so thanks to the people who included that reminder. :) I don't have an audio card. I'm just using the integral sound system: "Soundmax integrated digital audio". > I wouldn't worry so much about the pre-scan or playback file > stuff. If you're following the same procedures you've > always followed and playback has ceased to make sounds for > you, it's something other than that. That's a useful thought. From: Marcello Noia > have you tried to check that in your audiocard the MIDI volume has > not lowered to 0? Sometimes it happens to me without any reason (with > Finale 2006c for Windows) that when I open any file and start playback > I cannot hear anything, I go to audiocard mixer and find out that MIDI > fader (and that one only) is turned all way down. Finale does seem to change things without asking first! A couple of times recently it's switched off "allow redo", which had me seriously worried. Thanks again and best wishes, Patsy. -- Patsy Moore: pa...@mooremusic.org.uk ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] Finale 2000c and 2004a playback mystery
Hello Listers, Finale has obviously been evolving since I was last here several years ago, but I'm still using mainly 2000c with occasional forays into 2004a which my husband has. Playback on both versions of Finale was working fine until a couple of days ago and now isn't, and neither of us has been able to work out why. It packed up on 2000c first. Playback worked at first in 2004 and then stopped working there too. The problem isn't a general one on the computer or my headphones as I can hear the BBC radio broadcasts as usual. I use Finale playback mainly for proof-listening, which I'm so much better at than visual proof-reading, so I really miss it. I did find a mysterious instruction in the 2004 manual: Playback Files: All options in the Playback Files group box are only used when a playback file is selected for playback. (If you're playing the Active File, Pre-Scan Music must be selected in Playback Settings.) I can't find anything in either version's Playback Settings that says "Pre-Scan Music". All help grateful received.
