Re: DHCP problems

2005-10-16 Thread Muddle Man
Laurent,

The router may be set to DHCP but are all the Macs set
to use DHCP?

If they are set up as static that can obviously be the
problem. Or, if there is something wrong with the
router that may be the problem. I've not heard good
things about D-Link in that regard.

Check all the settings and let us know. Also, why a
switch and a router?

Re: 12.1 in. 1.5ghz powerbook

2005-09-14 Thread Muddle Man
Matthew,

I traded up to a 12" 1.5 Ghz PB after my G3 900 iBook
broke 3 times in 18 months. I always thought the PBs
were over priced for what they were. Was I wrong! I
researched the 12" PB after my iBook broke the 2nd
time. I decided to give my iBook one more try. Then on
the 88th day of the 90 day warranty for the replaced
logic board it broke again. Enough was enough! Now
that I have my PB I wish I'd gotten earlier! Once
thing I like most about the 12" 1.5 PB is that the
hard drive has a head parking mechanism if the
powerbook is dropped. It has a G-force sensor and can
tell when it's dropped.

If I had to complaints it would be these mild
criticisms. A) The bottom gets pretty hot, especially
if it's in your lap while the Mac is doing processor
intensive things (such as iMovie). B) The battery
clocks 3 1/2 to 4 hrs. My iBook was cooler (only a G3)
and the battery could do 5 1/2 to 6 hours without
sweating it.

Re: macros

2005-08-16 Thread Muddle Man
I had an iBook G3 900 for 18 months. Within that 18
months it broke THREE times. Logic board each time. It
was under the video card recall the first time. The
second time I had to pay the full cost of the repair
(no AppleCare, $350 flat fee). The logic board died
again on the 88th day of the 90 day warranty from the
2nd repair. I got it repaired a third time then sold
it! Good riddens. I was really, really, really angry
and considered becoming a turncoat and going with a PC
laptop. Once the anger cleared and I could think, I
got a 12" PB G4 1.5. It is awesome and I wish I'd done
it sooner! No more iBooks for me. My wife has a 12"
iBook. We'll see what happens.

Re: best photo organizer

2005-08-16 Thread Muddle Man
I found this happened to me as well. It happens when
you use iPhoto's built in burn function. It's actually
burning an iPhoto library to be imported into another
iPhoto. You can get around this by selecting the pics
you want and then dragging them on to the CD. Once
copied, the burn will be the real pics and not an
iPhoto library.

Re: CCC & Tiger

2005-08-16 Thread Muddle Man
I have been using CCC for some time with great
success. However, the latest version, 2.3 is not
compatible with Tiger 10.4. For me, it freezes when I
type in my admin password to start a clone operation.
I have been told this is a bug in it regarding 10.4.
So far, no new updates from the folks who make it. I'm
considering buying SuperDuper for $20 to replace CCC.
For now, I boot an external hard drive with 10.3 on it
just so I can clone with CCC.

Re: web page design

2005-04-13 Thread Muddle Man
Tom,

Dummies books are always a good place to start.
Simple, easy to read with plenty of info. Don't be
offended by the title.

Also, a good site to check out the skinny on the web
world is the world wide web consortium.

Most free GUI builders leave something to be desired.
I'd try the ones folks mentioned. They'd be good for
cutting your teeth on HTML. Try and get a GUI page
builder were you can view the pages source code so you
can get a feel for the code. Mozilla's composer will
let you do that.

Re: OS X bootable with iMac CD (was"Re: Ti 1ghz")

2005-04-13 Thread Muddle Man
I did this on my wife's MDD G4. There was a control
strip module causing Classic to crash. I was shocked
when I booted off the OS 9 CD and could not see the
internal hard drive. No need to panic. It's just
because the OS 9 drivers were not installed during the
factory format...

Re: is my iBook screwed

2005-04-13 Thread Muddle Man

Mine did that. Very un-nerving experience. Find out if
your serial number matches the range in this kb
article. If so, call Apple and arrange a dispatch.
They will send you a box via DHL overnight. You box it
up and send it off. It'll be back inside three days.
And you'll get a new logic board to boot.

Re: Airport Question

2005-04-13 Thread Muddle Man
Is true that PC card wireless cards are cheaper and
easier to find than Airport cards. I too have an
Airport in my iBook G3 900.

It's important to understand that the protocol used to
communicate over a network is TCP/IP and wireless
802.11b/g. These protocols are not platform specific.

To give you an idea, let's use my home network as an
example. I have a cable modem, Linksys Wireless B
router, two Mac desktops running wired to the router;
one iBook with Airport, and one Win XP laptop with a
Linksys wireless B PC card. The standard of
communications wirelessly is 802.11b. The router
doesn't care if it's an iBook running OS X or Win XP
with any wireless PC card.

iBooks don't have a PC card slot, so a PC card
wireless card is not an option. There are very few PC
cards that do work with Macs. They only work with
PowerBooks since they have PC card slots in them.

I prefer Linksys over D-link for quality and trouble
free usage. When you get the router don't bother
running any install programs (probably won't have an
installer for Mac anyway) since they are not needed.
Each router has a way for the router to be accessed
through a web page interface. You'll see directions
for that in the manual. This is important because you
will want to lock down your wireless network with a
WEP to keep folks from using your wireless signal to
surf w/o your knowledge.

Check your iBook against the serial number range on

It may have a video problem that has been recalled.

Re: Ti 1ghz

2005-04-10 Thread Muddle Man
Short answer: If a Mac can boot into OS 9 then OS X is
not required to be installed on it as well.

My G3 900 iBook died and I had it repaired only
because I need the ability to boot into OS 9. I create
a lot of web documentation for both OSes. I installed
9 first. Got all my 9 apps installed/running and
configured. Then installed X. I have run both my iBook
and a G4 733 with nothing but OS 9 on the drive.

What got confusing is when Apple stopped making Macs
that could boot into OS 9 and could only run Classic
Mode. In those cases OS 9 was actually installed last,
not first. Takes a little getting used to.

There are two types of Airport cards. Airport and
Airport Extreme. Two different form factors/pin outs.
Airport is the older type that you must use (802.11b
12Mbps). Airport Extreme is 802.11g @ 54Mbps. The
first iBooks that could use Extreme were the G4 iBooks
(I have a G3 900 and it uses standard Airport).

Can't boot from USB. The USB ports on your iBook are
the ver 1.1 variety. Running an OS off that drive, if
you could, would be unreasonably slow. Better to
perhaps get a larger internal drive. If not that, then
a firewire drive. Solves the boot problem and gets you
more space.

500Mhz will do for that. I've run X on a Bondi Blue
iMac 233, so I know a G3 500 can do it. With OS X,
more RAM is always better. Max RAM is best.

Re: Data Rescue (was iPhoto/iChat Question)

2005-04-10 Thread Muddle Man
Ah, the old Trash Can trick... I work for a large
cable provider and am working with the webmaster
updating Macintosh knowledge base articles. I am
removing any instances that refer to "temporarily"
putting items in the trash. I used to do it since
that's what all the books say to do. To avoid this
type of thing happening (imagine the added factor of
doing this over the telephone!) I will no longer put
items in the trash.

In order for a folder to get created/recreated the
orignal simply has to be moved from the directory.
Creating a new iPhoto library would work just as well
if the original had been moved to the desktop. Heck
even just renaming it works most of the time (some
programs are smart enough to see the folder even after
renaming it). The trash is out, no pun

Re: Thoughts on a trade

2005-04-05 Thread Muddle Man
Knowing these things probably would have changed our
suggestions as well.

I struggled with the same exact problem before I
bought my G4 733 QuickSilver. As you can read, I
decided on the single processor.

As I understand it, a dual processor is only about 1/3
faster than it's actual Mhz rating in OS X (since OS X
supports dual processors). For most tasks you'll be
better off with the single 733. The only exception
would be if you are using a new version of Photoshop
and do serious work with it (since it supports mutiple
processors as well).

I had a B&W G3 450 before my 733. I had an ATA
controller in it and multiple drives. It worked fine
most of the time, but gave me a hassle occasionally.
My QuickSilver, however, as given me NO problems at
all. I am extremely happy with it. Do yourself a favor
and get as much RAM as you can (I maxed mine out to
1.5 and haven't looked back).

Re: iBook screen went black

2005-04-03 Thread Muddle Man
Aase,

I've had two video problems with my G3 900 iBook.
First one was a video card recall, the second was the
beast just not turning on. A totally black screen
could be almost anything.

The easy ones are:
- You simply ran out of battery. When the battery gets
low enough the Mac will sleep and won't wake until you
give it some juice. Usually, however, this scenario
occurs after getting messages stating the battery is
dying.
- Try hooking the iBook up to an external monitor. See
if it boots normally and you can use the Mac.

The more difficult ones are:
- May need to reset the PMU.

- Try starting it up with just the power cord w/ the
battery removed.

Any lights on the Mac at all (flashing sleep light)?
Any light around the power cord connector (colored
ring)?
Any startup chime? Any extra info you can give about
this will be helpful.

Re: Followup Re: generic screen w/no Finder in OS X?

2005-04-01 Thread Muddle Man
An archive and install is a great way to get a new,
clean system on the Mac (ala "Clean" install of OS 9
days).

However, you will encounter serious problems if you
don't update the Mac immediately after doing an
archive and install. I did this once and tried to open
Mail and some other apps they immediately crashed with
an unexpected error. The Mail version was at OS
10.3.5. The archive and install put it back to 10.3.0.
Once updated, all was well.

Re: max ram for Wallstreet?

2005-04-01 Thread Muddle Man
There is some truth to this. I've run iMac and
Powerbooks with more RAM than will be officially
"recognized." This is typical of Apple's Spec database
site.

Re: Firewire not working

2005-04-01 Thread Muddle Man
I recommend trying the cable and iPod on a different
Mac. This sounds like a hardware problem and testing
like this will be the only way to figure it out.

If it turns out it is the firewire port, then consider
calling Apple if it's still under warranty.
