Yes, you need to create an account on Google Groups to get the
emailed digests, because you need to set your preferences, AFAIK. All
you need enter is your email address and a password; and they already
HAVE your e-mail address...

No, not true. I did it all from ny Internet Cable address with no
problem, and I'm receiveing the Digest.
Maybe, just maybe, people do not read the instructions carefully. We are
so used to the easy-of-use of the Mac, that we are spoiled. :-)

Re: security re: file sharing/networks

2006-01-14 Thread macnifico

Hi, Listers!

After reading all those theft of service dire warnings, unenforsable
(sp.?) in my view, and considering that I live in Mexico, just across
the border from Texas, I went to see the top engineer in my Cable
Company Internet Division. The official line:
I can have 5 computers connected via the Ethernet ports, and up to 24
via Wireless.

So to me closing or opening my Wi-Fi transmiter (sp?.) is a moot point.
After 2 years of having it open, I decided to close it (only registered
Wi-Fi cards can have access) because I began to worry if someone could
be using it to do some nefarious thing, so now, sadly, my network is closed.
I liked the idea of givinf free access to anyone living in the range of
my signal, or parking near my apartment. I even met some very nice
medicine students that way. 2 of them have their cards registered, and
can come anytime near my apartment to check their mail or work on their
projects.
I do miss those simpler times when I knew almost all the people in my
city that had an Internet connection.

Best regards from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico!

Re: Software Piracy

2005-12-09 Thread macnifico

Hi, Listers!

It is permisible by the eBay rules, to contact you about a similar
item being auctioned in eBay.
It is NOT permisible to contact you to offer you a similar item
by-passing eBay, (a private sale).
It is permisible to sell a computer with the OS only. The rules do
not specify that the OS should be the original one for the computer.
It is NOT permisible to include other software, like M$ Office, Adobe
Photoshop, etc., if you advertise it, your auction will be cancelled,
even if you include the erase disk clause.
In more than a thousand eBay transactions, only ONCE did the seller
sent me a letter transferring something to me. Really, he included
the disks and a letter of transfer. Only one guy, in more than 300
computers and programs bought through eBay

And an interesting story: I bought a Duo 230 some years ago, that
included ALL the e-mail that this gal in a famous university ever
sent.
I'm seriously considering writing a novel based on this gal's VERY
interesting love life, plus all the problems she had trying to adapt
to the big university environment. It was very interesting reading,
and made me a fanatic of the wipe every HD and re-install
everything before selling it.
Problem is, English is a second language to me, so I'm sure I would
not do justice to the material. :-)

Re: Mac OS X.3.9 on Wallstreet 233MHz?

2005-05-24 Thread macnifico

Hi again, Listers!

Thank you all for your opinions, tips, etc.
One thing that I found is that I still do not learn the names of the
versions, so I'm always wondering if Panther is X.3 or X.2. :-)

James Sanderson wrote: if you really like Panther more
than Jaguar. This comp had issues with Jaguar; it ran more slowly,
wouldn't wake from sleep, and it had some serious video issues
(screen would turn blank, for example, or it would 'melt'). The
upgrade to Panther fixed all those issues, but ran slowly until I
upgraded the processor, not that it's blazing fast now, mind, but it
runs quite well for my needs.

I installed OS X when it came out, but didn't run well on my
Wallstreet, then I installed OS X.2 on it and it was passable. I sold
that PB, bought a Pismo and installed OS X.3 on it. What a difference!
This was usable!
But, I sold my Pismo, too. I was going to buy one of the 600 MHz
iBooks, but I spent the $$$ on more urgent things. Now I bought the WS
II, and I'm wondering about the OS.
What I found out, is that what is fast for some is slow for others. I
don't mind waiting 2 or 3 seconds for a web page to appear. My son
considers that unacceptably slow. I find OS X.3.9 runs well on a 400
MHz iMac, but my son finds it slow. It's all relative.

Nick wrote: I would stick with 9 on that machine. My buddy has a
500Mhz Pismo and it

runs X ok. A bit pokey, but it goes.

That is what I was thinking about. You consider OS X on a 500 MHz Pismo
a bit pokey. I consider OS X.3 on a Pismo 400 MHz and on an iMac 400
MHz very good.

And Mad Dog wrote: Its going to be slow, but what do you expect. I am
quite surprised

how well my G3/300 WS2 runs 10.3.9. Using XPF you might have to
fiddle a bit if you get the Purple Panther Problem, but its solvable.

I don't remember reading about the PPP. What is it?

Once again, thank you all for your input. I'm leaning to stay with OS
9.2.2, until I get at least a 300 MHz CPU upgrade.

Best regards.

Mac OS X.3.9 on Wallstreet 233MHz?

2005-05-23 Thread macnifico

Hi, Listers!

I'm getting a Wallstreet with a 6 Gb HD, 288 Mb RAM, and 233 MHz G3.
It's going to be used mainly for light Web browsing, and a few Excel
spreadsheests. Nothing processor-intensive.
I was wondering if OS X.3 would run OK on this machine, or if I should
stay with OS 9.2.2. I have OS X.2, too. But I've grown acustomed
(spell?) to OS X.3.9, it runs very well in my iMac 400 MHz with 320 Mb.

Thank you for your input.

Winona State in minnesota has the same system. People put up with it
too. Dunno why. It's not like it's that hard to allow someone to

Subject: Anyone still using the Powerbook G3 Kanga Original
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
hi all,
Anyone still use one of these?:
http://www.lowendmac.com/pb2/g3.shtml
I'd love to get my hands on a good unit but they are very hard to find
in Singapore. Any users care to share their experiences with the
Kanga?

I've used this wonderful machines, however, I sold my last one on eBay
a few weeks ago.
They are fast. I prefer OS 8.6 on them. However, I used 9.1 because a
couple of programs required it.
They are fast and rugged. I wish I still have mine. However, I need DVD
playing on my laptop, and every new program requires OS X.2 or .3 , so
I had to sell it, and with the funds I bought a Pismo.
Another thing, They have the BEST sound of ANY Mac laptop that I have
ever heard. Sound like a ghood quality portable stereo.

Hope this helps.

Well, I did it. Installed everything and the darn thing works perfectly.

ONLY 2.4 GHz wireless phones cause problems with WiFi (as do microwave

900 MHz or 5.8GHz phones do not.

Wi-Fi, Pismo and Panasonic Cordless Phone

2004-11-29 Thread macnifico
Hi, Listers!
I have the following equipment:
NetGear M813 Wi-Fi Router
Internal AirPort Card inside a
Pismo 400 MHz with 512 Mb.
And a Panasonic Cordless 900 MHz Phone.
When I use the phone in the evenings and nights, there is a sound,
like a screech, that sometimes sounds loud and sometimes sounds soft.
At irregular intervals. It increases if I talk for a long time (more
than 10 minutes).
The PB usually is on connected to the Internet. Eudora is set to
check the mail every 15 minutes. Firefox is on but not searching,
just in the background.

Could the NetGear base be the culprit? I do not want to turn it off
and get of the Internet every time I get a call.
:-(

Dumb OS X.3.4 Question

2004-07-25 Thread macnifico
Hi, Listers!
I finally was dragged, kicking and screaming , to the OS X side,
after seeing what Windows XP does on my son's Sony KR-15 laptop.
So I sold my PowerBook 1400c/333 MHz G3, my Kanga, and my WallStreet
266 MHz on which I had used OS X.1.5, didn't like it, and stayed a
few more years with OS 9.
Then I bought myself a great, fast computer (for me that is a Pismo
400 MHz with 256 Mb and a 40 Gb HD), and installed OS X.3, upgraded
to X.3.4.
Everything works great, and is reasonably fast. I'm learning a new
system, really.
So here is my dumb question:

Why can't I hear the reassuring sound of the Mac chord as the
computer turns on?

Best regards.

Re: Dumb OS X.3.4 Question

Hi, Rick!
Nops, every sound level is set at maximum, and everything sounds fine
except the StartUp chord. Funny, when I start in 9.2.2, the Start Up
Mac chord is loud and clear, but not with Mac X.3. If I remember
well, with Mac X.1.5, the chord was heard in all its glory...
Is this really an OS feature?
Best regards.

macnifico,
Most likely you've checked this, but take a look at your sound
output level in your Sound Preference Panel, and also make sure the
output indicates your built-in speakers. Also check your function
keys, make sure sound output is not muted.

Eudora Question, from OS 9 to OS X

2004-07-02 Thread macnifico
Hi, Listers!
I've been using Eudora in several computers and several versions, and
I always could move my massive amount of mail (around 35 Mb) from
computer to computer and from several OSes, up to OS 9.2.2.
Of course I have it backed up in CD, but I like to have it on hand.
Now I have a Pismo with OS X.3 and I'm wondering if it would be as
easy to move, what with the newer (to me) way of storing things,
where should I move my Mail' file?

If you do decide to install OS 9 on the second partition, **be sure**
to tell Disk Utility to install OS 9 drivers when you format and
partition your drive.

So, bear with me:
Should I first partition the HD with OS 9 Disk Utility, and then
Install OS X.2 on the first partition?
Then OS 9.2.1 on the second, bootable partition?
Just to clarify...

Subject: Update Netscape for Pismo?
I have a Pismo 400, OS 9.1, and am using Netscape 4.75. I am
increasingly having trouble loading some, but not all, Web pages and
wondering if it might be tied this older version of Netscape. I have a

interested in making any modifications to the Pismo, nor am I interested
in using another type of browser. My question is, will Netscape 7 run
well on my Pismo as is?
Les

Hi, Les!

I've been running Netscape 7.0.1 on my WallStreet 266MHz with 256 Mb
with no problems.
I'm now using it on a 1400c 250 MHz G3. It had 40 Mb and Netscape 7.0.1
was slow. After upgrading the RAM to the 64 Mb limit, Netscape 7.0.1 is
running just
fine. And I have found it is faster than Explorer 5.1 and iCab.

Now I want to migrate the Netscape mail and bookmarks to the 1400.
What files should I copy to the 1400?

Subject: Lots of G3 wallstreet internal modem disconnecting- seen this
before?
From: Sid Barras
Hi all,
My internal wallstreet modem is constantly dropping out, plus it
connects at slower speeds (48000, or 49333 as opposed to 5 to
52000) compared to the global village 56k buscard modem I had been
using in my previous workhorse, the pb 1400.

X

Hi, Sid!

Same thing happened to me. After a year or so of working flawlessly, the internal modem started to disconnect apparently at random, and after much troubleshooting, I gave up and bought a 56K PC Card modem.
That was a year ago, and the PC Card modem is still going strong.
The internal/ A tech told me that maybe it received a spike' and that is why it acted so strange.
So get the GV modem on that WS, I had one once and it was the fastest modem I had, consistently connecting at 52K, while the MegaHertz that I have now tops at 48K.
Best regards.

Greetings..

I saw your posting about the Wallstreet repair. I had a similar issue with
my Pismo (dropped it and cracked that board).

At the time (not knowing this group), I found three companies on the web to
do repairs: Powerbookguy.com (in SF, CA), wegenermedia.com (in SC), and the
guys at pbparts.com (in AZ).

After comparing prices and service, I sent my machine to Wegener, and they
did the job for me, quite well. I also dropped the same machine a few months
ago and cracked the LCD, which they also replaced for me. The LCD alone was
$200 or 300 less than anyone else I could find...

My thought is that you might check with them.. I think they charge a flat
rate on powerbook repairs (I paid $50 per visit for all labor on my Pismo, which
I thought was better than any car mechanic!).

You're right--the savings on labor more than covered my shipping costs, and I
was pleasantly surprised to get my own machine back within a couple of days
on both occasions. Here in Dallas I couldn't seem to find a single company
that was reliable or even knew what the issue was when I mentioned my
Powerbook--so I'd DEFINITELY recommend sending it to someone who knows what they're
doing. I took it to 2 different stores here and both said it would be a 'new logic
board' ($699 $900), and when I pressed, neither store knew anything
specifically about the powerbook--I think they were just going to find someone online
to do it. Both stores said they'd need the machine for at least 2 weeks to get
it repaired..

Hope that helps!

Tom

Need recommendation for WS repair.

2003-07-31 Thread macnifico
Hi!

My PowerBook Wallstreet has this classic problem. I need to prop up the
a/c plug so it exerts pressure, otherwise the battery won't charge, and
even if the Control Strip shows that the PB is taking its power from the
wall, the battery is the one that it really working, discharging normally.
Now I have to prop the charger plug at a very steep angle, before it
needed just a bit of pressure to show the lighting bolt, now it needs
a lot and to be just so.
I need some recommendation: Some shop that can fix this at a reasonable
cost. I don't want to pay $85 an hour, for a two hour job, at least,
plus the cost of the needed pieces of hardware. In other words, more
than $200 US dlls. It is NOT economically sound.
I figure than even with shipping charges, I can have a more cheap,
well-done job.
So, anyone cares to recommend some Mac Guru somewhere?
And if this is off-topic, then e-mail me off list.
TIA and best regards.

Re: Need recommendation for WS repair.

2003-07-31 Thread macnifico
Hi, Ken!

I'm very BAD at soldering. I tried it a few years ago, and I was BAD.
Now, with failing eyesight and trembling hands, I do not dare to even
look at a soldering iron.
I can exchange pieces of hardware (HDs, memory, CPUs upgrades, etc.) but
no soldering, please.
If it is just an exchange of parts, I'll do it.
Best regards.

Well, I don't think it is too far off topic. I suppose the cheapest way
to do the repair is to do it yourself. Not being one easily intimidated
by taking things apart, I swapped most of the parts in and out of a
Wallstreet in order to get it going. After all that, I finally found that
it was the processor card. Now I have a bunch of extra parts!

From you description of the problem, I would guess that the soldered
connection between the power socket and the Sound Card has come loose. If
you aren't up to doing a bit of soldering, I have and extra Sound Card.
If you want to do a swap out (one of the easier parts to get at in the
Wallstreet), let me know.

Ken

I contacted ebay fraud office and told them about these scams but they have
done nothing. Best of luck.

Recently I got one of those scam e-mails.

Dear sir, i saw that you bidd on Apple iBook 900MHz and i want to offer you the same one for a lower price of 580$.Check my feedback for seriosity (id: ladxxx). If you are interesed mail me on [EMAIL PROTECTED](Names changed to protect the innocent)

I reported it to eBay after checking that the seller had a great
record of selling dolls and bric-a-brac, low-cost items, and finding
the spelling was like a 14 year old using big words, or a foreigner that
doesn't write English very well. (This was for an Apple 900MHZ PB).
Although eBay clearly states that the investigations are confidential
and you may not receive any more e-mails from them,

eBay's SafeHarbor Department usually reviews all reports of spam within
24 hours. Please keep in mind that the action taken based on your report
is confidential. For privacy reasons, we will not be able to keep you
informed of any developments; however, we pledge to quickly examine your
report and apply our guidelines fairly.

in this particular case I received this e-mail, which I quote:

Hello,

The recent email sent from this account was the result of an
unauthorized account takeover. The password was guessed or discovered
and then used to send email like the message you received.
Unfortunately, we were not made aware of this activity until after the
email had been sent. We are now in the process of getting the account
restored to its true owner.

Let me suggest a few ways this takeover could have occurred.

First, if the user had a relatively simple password or password hint

So, yes, they do investigate, although they are so swamped with work
that most of the time they are unable to write back.

As I said before, being a member since '96, and having successfully
completed more than a 900 transactions, I have found that the Mac crowd
there is like the Mac crowd here: Honest and helpful. Of course,
whenever an item goes above $400, I insist in an escrow service, and I
have been following Chris tips for years.

Best regards.

The really sad thing that I did notice
though, was people bidding up the price on auctions so high that they
might as well buy at a retail used/refurbished store. Foolish.

Cheers - Steve K

Steve:

Some of us live where there are no Apple Stores, no Macs at all, in fact.
So retail used/refurbished is a reasonable price to pay when you are
in Wintel territory, as I am.
But the Mac OS is so easy to use, that I've been able to sell dozens of
Mac PB's easily, and made a few MacAddicts along the way.

I have bought and sold (mainly bought) literally dozens of PB's and PPC PowerMacs on
eBay since 1996, and found that 99.5% of people are honest, friendly and helpful.
Or maybe it's that we Mac freaks are honest, friendly and helpful. :-)
Just don't go for Western Union only foreign auctions. ;-)

Re.: Wallstreet memory 192MB ?

Subject: Wallstreet memory 192MB ?
Date: Thu, 03 Jul 2003 14:47:53 +0200
Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have read (on Apple's site) that the 266MHz Wallstreet will
only accept 192MB RAM (64 + 128 in top slot), but I recall
hearing that someone had fitted more...
I have a 256MB SO DIMM from a PB Ti 550. Will this work ?

Laurence

My WallStreet 266MHz has a 128Mb on the lower slot and a 256Mb on the top slot, but this is recognized as a 128Mb, for a total of 256Mb.

I tried to run OS X.1.5 on it but it was too slow. I've heard that X.2 it is better, but I'm hesitating... I know OS9.x well, and do not want to spend another $100 on a system that may be still too slow...

Best regards.

Mac OS X on WallStreet

2003-05-29 Thread macnifico
A few months ago I installed Mac OS X.1.5 on my WallStreet II, 266 MHz,
256Mb, 20 Gb.
No problems, except that it doesn't support the DVD player or the USB
and FireWire PC Cards that I have. My PC Card modem was supported only
in v.X.1.5 with a generic driver that didn't had the speed of the
original driver, and the worst was that the graphics were kinda slow, so
slow that I erased the whole HD and reinstalled Mac OS 9.2.1.
I've been very happy ever since.
But IF I get another, newer PB, I want to install X.2.x.
But not on my WallStreet.
Best regards.
