RE: [hlds_linux] Source Engine Beta Update Available

2007-06-13 Thread Guy Watkins
I updated to the 0613 beta.
I played with the while list file.

I had added these 2 lines:
Resource\... allow_from_disk+check_crc
resource\... allow_from_disk+check_crc

When I switched to the second map the server crashed just after a warning
about duplicate lines. I deleted the first Resource line and the error did
not occur.

However, this makes me think that the white list file is not used for the
first map! I start the server with this line:
./srcds_run +maxplayers 21 +map breakfloor +log on -secure -tickrate 33
+port 27015

Then you will be better off with sourcemod. Since you can write your own
plugin that does all that automatically at spawn. You have full freedom
to do anything you want.

I have been waiting for SM since the release of CS:S. And cant wait to
convert all my amx plugins I use for CS to CS:S. And since SQL now is
available I can start to do so.

To the rest. There are options to mani. I use BAT now for basic admin
stuff like kick, ban... ont top of that I have a high ping kicker plugin,
one for restrictions, one against team attack and a couple of more...

mani got too bloated on the way, with a lot of stuff like setting people
on fire and crap. I had to disable 90% of the functionality of mani to
have a plugin that did just what I wanted it to do. Admins should be able
to kick, ban, be able to switch team on a player and give warnings.
Anything else is just a bonus.

Re: [hlds_linux] Source Engine Beta Update

But i like bonuses so much. Mani had all the stuff server admins could
want in 1 simple pack. You didnt need to find _everything_ separately,
like ingame stats, teamkiller punishments, map voting system, reserve
slots, skin setting for players, soundplaying, weapon restrictions and
all kinds of handy settings (see mani_server.cfg). True, most of it is a
bonus but very usefull. You make SourceMod sound like the thing where
you have freedom to do anything BUT with exception that a) you gotta
know scripting and coding and b) its like matties eventscripts, pieces
from there and there to pick for your needs. Tons of separate
scripts/functions where mani had them all in the same pack. Bloated?
Maybe. Usefull? Definitely and thats the reason why mani-admin got so
popular. There was no alternative at that time and there still isnt.

Re: [hlds_linux] Source Engine Beta Update

2007-06-10 Thread kama

According to that statement I guess you have never runned a CS server with
AMX or AMXX...

SourceMod will have most of your needs ready in the default package, other
mani features for download as plugins. And you will find tons of other
stuff that you never will see in mani. The point is that you are not
dependent on one person writing stuff into their mod. You are also not
dependent on that person whenever he decides to go to a year long
expedition to save the whales.

SourceMod and AMXX is more community based than hardcoded pluings. Anyone
can write anything to it. And if one person does not want to learn to
write plugins, just pop a request in their forum and someone might write
it just for fun.

I have full control when using AMX (I have not yet converted to AMXX). I
almost only use it as an plugin engine. I have my own sql based admin
system, my own stats system. I make my servers unique. I have gone so far
that I have even redefined the adminflags, so I can set them exactly the
way I want them to. 90% of my plugins are unique to my servers.

SourceMod seems to have gotten a bit more advanced when it goes to writing
plugins than AMXX. I have not dived into it at fully yet, but it feels a
little more OO, a little more of C++ vs C. But thats just for glancing
over it extremely briefly a while ago.

The reason mani has been so popular is not about it having all of those
features, it is that he was first to release a decent admin tool and all
the other serveradmins just follows. Most probably didnt even know that
there where others around when they sat up their CSS server. I prefer BAT
over mani any day now. And the reason is not just because I fixed a memory
leak around his threading code (when running under linux). ;p

all kinds of handy settings (see mani_server.cfg).

Hi!

What build is it showing your beta-client? Mine is 3130 an it still lets me

version in client console shows this:

Protocol version 7
Exe version 1.0.0.34 (cstrike)
Exe build: 11:51:38 Jun 3 2007 (3130)

Do you have the pure_server_whitelist.txt somewhere in your
server-directory?

Yes.

And if you do, where is it supposed to be? in cstrike/ ?

Definitely in Game path, which is ./cstrike for me.

Like I said, I seem to have tried everything but I just can't get it to
work. And what build is your server showing up? Mine says version :
1.0.0.34/7 3128 secure (where as normal servers are version :
1.0.0.34/73048 secure). I know it's just me not getting it to work.

version on my dev server shows this:

Protocol version 7
Exe version 1.0.0.34 (cstrike)
Exe build: 15:34:54 Jun 1 2007 (3128)

But this will bug
me forever if I can't get it to work. :P

No doubt -- it bugged me forever too! ;)

Here is a sample pure_server_whitelist.txt. I had some trouble
finding an example elsewhere. Hope this helps:

   //  check_crc   - used with allow_from_disk - server does
//CRC checks on the client's file to make
   //sure it matches
   //
// The default modifier on all files is allow_from_disk. Thus, all
// files can come from disk and don't need CRC checks unless
// allow_from_disk can be set at the same time as check_crc. Use
// the + character in between them to signify this:
   //
   //  allow_from_disk+check_crc.
   //
// Three types of file specifications:
   //
// 1. directory\*.* - refers to all files under the directory
// 2. directory\... - refers to all files under the directory
// and all directories under that (recursively)
   //  3. directory\filename  - refers to a single file
   //
// By default, when in pure server mode, most content file types
// are only allowed to come from Steam.
   //

   materials\... from_steam

   //models\... allow_from_disk+check_crc
   //sounds\... allow_from_disk+check_crc

   //
// Allow custom player models. Don't do CRC checks on them

it was extra parameters to starting hl2/css but you actually need to
throw -beta srcds0407 at steam.exe itself, and not just your hl2/css
 startup parameters.

For example, here is how I had to start up steam to get the beta client
going:

 C:\Steam\Steam.exe -beta srcds0407

It worked perfectly for me after that and I am thoroughly stoked about
preventing texture/model hackers on my server as soon as this update
goes live! Of course, we're still scrambling around figuring out what
to do about the imminent demise of Mani but that's another topic for

Hope this helps some others like myself who felt like noobs not

An update to the Source Engine/Dedicated Server beta is now
available. To update, run hldsupdatetool or Steam with the command
-beta srcds0407. If this update goes well, we plan on releasing
it within a few days. The specific changes include:

 - Fixed a server performance problem with queued packets
 - Fixed a Counter-Strike: Source flashbang exploit in dxlevel 80
 - Game DLLs export ServerGameClients003 for backwards compatibility
 for plugins
 - Only allows mat_picmip to be set to 0, 1, or 2 when in
 multiplayer and sv_cheats=0
 - Cheat-protected snd_foliage_db_loss. Could be used to turn off
 ambient sounds in Counter-Strike: Source
 - Fixed a crash when mashing the ~ key on disconnect
 - Fixed a crash with certain materials being blocked from reloading
 due to sv_pure 0
 - Fixed bug with audio files of different formats overriding the
files in Steam where it would use the original audio file's sample
rate/format information after pure server rules forced it to load a
 different file

Mani Admin Plugin 2005 V1.1.0zi. But I have some issues, but restrictions
work fine.

I am looking to replace Mani Admin. Please send recommendations!

Re: [hlds_linux] Source Engine Beta Update

2007-06-09 Thread ics

Currently there are no good replacements for mani-admin and if it indeed
goes bonkers, 18189 public servers need to find a replacement for it.
(addon-stats here http://www.sourcemod.net/stats.php) and Sourcemod
really isnt an option because it doesnt have any admin-functions. Or if
it does, that stuff is well hidden somewhere without any documentation
or instructions how the stuff really works so before any of you start
saying how great sourcemod really is, hold back untill you see some real
content running on/in it so people can actually use it. for example,
more documentation and detailed information about cvars etc would be
nice to see. Also this thread is worth a look...
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=566697

There was some line on beta updates about plugin backwards compatibility
so maybe Valve has actually this time prevented mani-admin from breaking
down and they dont change core functions so it wont break. There could
be many disappointed server owners out there of mani really goes bonkers
after the update is out. Even i have considered running my servers if i
have to give up from mani-admin. Really there isnt many good options
available. There are infact 3. Matties Eventscripts (with tons of
different scripts), Mani-admin's old rival Beetlesmod (less fuctions
than mani has) and Sourcemod. Dont really know much about Sourcemod but
i guess someone can explain better than the website does.

Re: [hlds_linux] Source Engine Beta Update

2007-06-09 Thread Ryan Veltidi

The only thing that I did not like about Mani was that it would always
tell the server whenever I used an admin command. I never understood
why player X has to know that I slapped/slayed player Y. If this was
an option (or editable source!) in SourceMod, I would certainly switch
right away.

control to spawning chef's hats on hostages.

From the SourceMod site:
In addition to the recent feature of SQL support, SourceMod has gained its
first default administrative plugin. Over the next few weeks more of these
will appear, and SourceMod will be more and more usable for normal
administrators. Our goal is to reproduce most of the original AMX Mod X
commands.

Judging by the popularity of amxmod and amxmodx on HL1 based servers,
SourceMod should rapidly take over for Mani as well as allow customization.
All of those people who complained that Mani installed everything instead of
just the options they used will be able to setup SourceMod with just those
options.

Re: [hlds_linux] Source Engine Beta Update

2007-06-09 Thread Ryan Veltidi

True, and that's what Mani says is the reason. But we do a special
Admin Night / Map Night on Friday nights where we give tons of
things, and change around health, slap to 1 health, etc, etc. It's the
only night our server is 100% full at around 40-50 players, and
everybody enjoys it. So, most people don't consider it abuse. It just
annoys people that their chat is being obstructed by all those
commands.

And sometimes it takes too long to @rcon ma_give or rcon through console, etc.

It just
annoys people that their chat is being obstructed by all those
commands.

And sometimes it takes too long to @rcon ma_give or rcon through console,
etc.

RE: [hlds_linux] Source Engine Beta Update

2007-06-09 Thread Guy Watkins
My performance problems explained (I hope)!

My startup script had been running as root and using nice -5 to run
srcds_run at a higher priority than normal. On my newest system I am not
running it as root so I had to make changes and learn some sudo magic. I
ended up changing my script to use renice -5 and not nice -5. But there are
threads and renice does not renice the threads. This seems to be causing
the main process to use a lot of CPU! Even with zero players the CPU load
is 60-95%.

When I don't renice the process the CPU load is normal. I can even get it
back to normal by doing renice 0.

On my system that does not have this problem I am using:
nice -n -5 screen -d -m -S css1 ./srcds_run +maxplayers 21 +map breakfloor
+log on -secure -tickrate 33 +port 27015

But that changes the nice on other processes that don't need to be changed.
So when I reworked my script I only renice srcds_i686. It seemed better to
only renice srcds_i686.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/BigFS/css1$ sudo renice -5 8363
8363: old priority 0, new priority -5
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/BigFS/css1$ ps -elyL|grep i686

srcds_i686

Oh, this renice -5 problem does not exist with the pre-beta. Not sure why.

Hopefully now that I don't renice -5, my performance problems will be gone.
Valve, you have my permission to make the beta live! :)

I spent a bit of time digging around the list archives earlier today
to interpret exactly what beta client entails. At first I thought
it was extra parameters to starting hl2/css but you actually need to
throw -beta srcds0407 at steam.exe itself, and not just your hl2/css
startup parameters.

For example, here is how I had to start up steam to get the beta client going:

C:\Steam\Steam.exe -beta srcds0407

It worked perfectly for me after that and I am thoroughly stoked about
preventing texture/model hackers on my server as soon as this update
goes live! Of course, we're still scrambling around figuring out what
to do about the imminent demise of Mani but that's another topic for
another thread...

Hope this helps some others like myself who felt like noobs not
knowing how to run your Steam client in beta! ;)

Hi!

What build is it showing your beta-client? Mine is 3130 an it still lets me
in. Do you have the pure_server_whitelist.txt somewhere in your
server-directory? And if you do, where is it supposed to be? in cstrike/ ?
Like I said, I seem to have tried everything but I just can't get it to
work. And what build is your server showing up? Mine says version :
1.0.0.34/7 3128 secure (where as normal servers are version :
1.0.0.34/73048 secure). I know it's just me not getting it to work.
But this will bug
me forever if I can't get it to work. :P

Anyway, it looks like my old system is better with the newer beta.

Guy

RE: [hlds_linux] Source Engine Beta Update

2007-06-07 Thread Guy Watkins
Today the Celaron 2.4 GHz is having issues again with the beta. The CPU
usage jumps wildly. The game glitches (like lag). I can't use the beta on
that system. The older P3-1000MHz is fine.

don't mind I will post a result here. If we have still the fps drops on
debian sarge servers, I hope your team will still find the time to try to
fix it.

Cheers,
Michael

The one before that one actually, the one from 5/21 had a fix for that.

Crap! I have been running the non-beta, I just updated to the new beta and
the CPU usage it 70-99% with 1 player. It seemed normal at first, after
about 10 minutes of play it started to lag and quickly became unusable. I
get what seems like lag. Take some shots and the ammo usage returns to what
it was before I took the shots. Going back in time. I have seen this with

I don't know if it's the same bug but I have a box running on Fedora 7
(2.6.21 kernel) on a 3.2ghtz Xeon. 32 players, 66 tick. Yesterday it was
running at nearly 1000fps and using 50-70%cpu (Along with some really
bad spikes that maxed out the cpu and killed the FPS).
I just checked it this morning. There are 24 players on and here are the
server stats

42.50 71240.83 157725.44 151 2 247.28 24
42.00 71799.45 165362.34 151 2 247.71 24
36.50 80007.18 145946.61 152 2 247.65 24
36.50 79378.77 147030.44 152 2 247.65 24

Why now do I appear to be fps locked at around 250fps with no restarts
or reboots since yesterday when I started the test? At that cpu usage I
should be running back at nearly 1000fps like yesterday. This is running
the latest beta.

RE: [hlds_linux] Source Engine Beta Update

2007-06-06 Thread Guy Watkins
No, you are looking at top wrong! I only have 1 CPU and no HT. Anyway,
what's wrong with HT? Works great with winblows. But never used it with
Linux.

Ok, back to the 38.3%.
Cpu(s): 38.3%us, 49.9%sy, 0.0%ni, 11.9%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si,
0.0%st

38.3 is total user time. 49.9 is total system time. 11.9 is total idle
time. So, given the above, the system is 88.1% used.

6264 guy 15 0 147m 66m 13m R 87.1 27.4 12:27.99 srcds_i686

As you can see, srcds_i686 is using 87.1% of the system leaving 1% used by
whatever else needed it. Assuming my math is correct.
