Thank you very much, Bruce. I neglected to mention that there are three

Safeguarding Volumes

2021-08-19 Thread Al Poulin
I would like to reformat an external hard drive at the media level, hopefully
to salvage it for another few years. It contains three CCC volumes that I want
to safeguard. A fourth volume has corrupted files. What is the best procedure?
All volumes are formatted Journaled HFS Plus, NOT APFS.

As I understand it, Disk Utility First Aid

I use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup four computers to the external drive as
bootable clones. Each CCC volume resides in its own partition. The volume for
my main computer has corrupted files which have not been resolved by
reformatting that volume singly with Disk Utility Erase and then cloning anew.
I want the clones to remain bootable.

Can I simply drag each volume to another media, to either my iMac’s internal
drive or another external drive? Would I need to create separate partitions for
each volume? Otherwise, should the volumes be set into disk images? Bombich
(CCC vendor) recommends using disk images “sparingly.” Then, would I update
each disk image in subsequent clones, or would I “Restore” each volume to
permit updating the clones?

Thanks for any guidance.

Migration Worked but not Keychain Local Items

2018-04-14 Thread Al Poulin

Using Setup Assistant, I migrated from my old iMac (24-inch, Early 2009)
with El Capitan 10.11.6 to a new iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) initially
with Sierra and now upgraded to High Sierra 10.13.4.

All is well except for Keychain. Most Local Items did not transfer. Is this
to be expected?

Is there an easy way to pull my old Local Items keychain? Or must I rebuild
the list manually?

Thank you,

Al Poulin

iMac Internal Microphone

2017-12-24 Thread Al Poulin
Hello,

Folks no longer hear me in FaceTime.

On iMac (24-inch, Early 2009), running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6, in Sound
preferences, I do not see “Internal Microphone.” Does that mean the microphone
is kaput?

I see External Microphone and Line In, with nothing plugged in.

Thanks,

Re: need schooling

Hello Eddie,

Congratulations on your choice. I am only 82 years old.

The Help tab in the top bar on the screen. In the Finder, you can pick on
What’s New in Mac OS X and Get to Know your Mac. Decide what parts of the
offerings to spend time on first. Each application has Help. Also Search in
Help.

A local Macintosh user group may have someone ready to spend time with you
one-on-one.
Beginners’ level class in your local public school system.
A seniors group.
Your neighbor’s kid (no kidding!).

BOOKS: I like the Teach Yourself VISUALLY series. If your new Mac is
running Sierra, “Teach Yourself VISUALLY macOS Sierra” is available now. If
you have High Sierra, that book will ship from Amazon.com later this month.
Another series with good reviews has “MacOS Sierra for Seniors.” Their High
Sierra version is also due soon.

You should be able to sit a while and browse these books at any Barnes &
Noble store. Perhaps your public library has them.

Apple Stores quit their own One to One service two years ago.

If you are moving over from a Windows PC, Apple has (or used to have) a
tutorial on line to help in the transition.

16GB Memory on 27-inch iMac

2016-12-02 Thread Al Poulin

Hello,

I see two ways to have 16GB of memory on a new, 27-inch iMac, with 1TB
Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm.

Other than the difference in cost, which memory configuration is better?

a) Buy Apple’s standard configuration 8GB (two 4GB) and then add two more
4GB in the remaining slots.

b) Buy Apple’s optional configuration 16GB (two 8GB).

Thanks,

Al Poulin

Running Snow Leopard Server

2016-12-02 Thread Al Poulin

Hello,

A couple questions.

I have an iMac (24-inch, Early 2009) which runs Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 on
one partition and El Capitan OS X 10. 11.6 on another partition.

I have a shrink-wrapped Mac OS X Server V10.6.3 Rev 1.

Can I install the Snow Leopard server on the El Capitan partition so that I
can launch and use my legacy version FileMaker Pro 8.0v3? This FMP will not
launch in El Capitan.

Next year, I will buy a new iMac. I believe I cannot install the client
Snow Leopard on it. Will I be able to install the Snow Leopard server?

Thanks,

Re: Screen Scrambles on Wake

2016-08-05 Thread Al Poulin

Scott, Valter,

Thanks for reminding me. I have used Target Disk Mode via Firewire. I have
a “Late 2013” MacBook Pro, 13” Retina, with Thunderbolt. I understand I can
connect to the old iMac via a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter. Perhaps I’d
have to put a FireWire extension cable in line.

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/answers/how-to-use-target-disk-mode-to-boot-from-another-macs-hard-drive

Would that work? With that $30 adaptor it would also be neat to transfer
files back and forth.

Screen Scrambles on Wake

2016-08-04 Thread Al Poulin
Greetings,

Am I looking at a hardware problem or misbehaving software?

My workhorse is the last 24 inch iMac that Apple produced. Running 10.9.5
Mavericks.
Early 2009 “Display Port”
2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB RAM
640GB HD
SuperDrive
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory

When waking from sleep, occasionally the display will scramble for about 5 or
10 seconds before organizing itself. This seems to happen more when multiple
screens are left open, even as few as three. Or, it may go black for a few
seconds and then settle down. There are 30 to 35 items on the Desktop.

This has been happening for two or three years, but seems to be more often now.

If this is hardware, should I eventualIy expect total failure of the screen to
display properly and prevent access to the system?

Thanks,
Al Poulin

External Drive for OS 10.4 Tiger

2015-01-15 Thread Al Poulin

Can’t new external hard drives be formated or otherwise made to work with
OS X 10.4 Tiger? I do not understand why not.

A user group member wants to buy an external hard drive to back up her old
iMac with 10.4 Tiger. It seems that models available at the Apple Store,
Best Buy, and other outlets specify OS X 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard
or later. This is with models like Seagate Slim and LaCie Porsche, whether
USB bus powered or with power adaptor.

I see that macsales.com/OWC has external drives that accommodate
everything from Mac OS 8.6 to the latest OS X.

Mac and iOS-Friendly Printer

2014-11-30 Thread Al Poulin

Hello,

Is there a brand that is particularly more Mac-friendly and iOS-friendly
than the others?

We need to replace an old printer. In past years, we have used Canon,
Epson, and HP and I know things have changed. Now, I want to look at
several brands for both photo and text work: Canon, HP, Epson, and Brother.
I want to avoid something that is too PC-oriented.

Hello,

Is the phone number below legit? And should I call it for service?

While browsing in Safari, an unwelcome ad from MacKeeper popped up, and I want
nothing to do with it. I thought had I clicked on a button to close it. But a
Safari - Alert note came up with: “Suspicious Activity Might Have been

Re: Moving to WordPress

2013-03-15 Thread Al Poulin

I am dual posting this to the LowEndMac/WordPress page and to the forum in
Google Groups since the two presentations are not being merged.

I took a quick look and decided not to register into WordPress. Then I
logged in with my Google name/password via the URL given in the original
announcement I received in the imaclist digest. That gave me the LEM
homepage. With no joy trying to find the new forum via the top level
buttons, I noticed the obscure mention of WordPress down the page.

The WordPress page width takes up up two thirds of my 24 inch iMac screen,
and from top to bottom I see a great deal of empty space. There is no
e-mail, no digest, and, If i understand the plan, I would have to go
individually to four or five or a half dozen fora via the browser to see if
there is anything of interest.

My mode of operation is to scan each LEM digest, archive to my hard drive
any threads or bits of threads that I want which may otherwise disappear in
the future as internet service allows to happen, and optionally go to the
online forum if I want to join in the thread or to open a new topic. I am
not about to archive web pages.

I avoid the GoogleGroups presentation as much as possible, and WordPress is
worse.

Without the digest, I am unlikely to go chasing for things in Safari.
Getting notified of follow-up replies via email won't cut it. A goodby
would be a shame.

Hmm, I see that my LEM thread archive goes back to the powermacs group in
year 2000.

Re: Mail Inbox Balloons with Multiple Copies

2012-10-27 Thread Al Poulin
Does anybody have thoughts on the Time Machine vs. Mail angle?

Thanks Harry, for your rebuild routine. I'm saving it in case this
duplication happens again. For now, the duplicates are gone. Will the
Imported mailboxes all wind up in a new "Imported" folder? Will they
replace my existing set of a couple dozen folders or will they sit at
the bottom of my existing list? If at the bottom, I'd have to somehow
manually rearrange things to look like before.

By the way, a couple years ago, I fumble-moused a folder or two into
chaos. With Time Machine, I restored the entire Mail Folder in my
Users>Library. Very Fast.

Mail Inbox Balloons with Multiple Copies

2012-10-25 Thread Al Poulin
Could Time Machine be messing me up with my email?

I have the last 24" iMac, Display Port, March 2009, running Snow
Leopard 10.6.8 with Mail 4.6.

On October 16 and 25, the Inbox of one of my three accounts became
populated with up to six, "unread" copies of emails. These emails had
remained in the Inbox or been moved to other folders or into the Trash
after reading. Some messages were not duplicated. I use POP mail and
keep the window shade at the bottom of the window. The Inbox contents
usually amount to about 3/4 of one screen full. With the duplicated
messages, the contents amounted to over five screens.

On both occasions, I restored the offending Inbox with Time Machine.
Time Machine created its own folder in Mail and provided the correct
Inbox contents in a new "Recovered Mailboxes" folder. I dragged the
contents of the bad Inbox to the Trash and then dragged the contents
of the Recovered Mailboxes folder to the now empty Inbox. And all
seems well.

There is nothing wrong at the Gmail website. The same email account
behaves properly on other devices in the house.

This morning, with my back to the machines, I heard the Time Capsule
working and then go silent. In an instant, I then heard a new message
alert. Turning around, I found the duplicate contents in the Inbox.
Mail was set to check for new messages every minute.

In Console, the All Messages file shows nothing that I can suspect
related to the problem.

Thanks for any enlightenment.

This is using Safari, updated just a few days ago. I've suggested

Apparently nothing to make her unhappy.

Thanks, I'm passing this on to her. So the 1 MB RAM is rather minimum
for some downstreaming.

And thanks, Judith for your comments about the add-ons. I doubt they
apply, but I'll confirm.

Krys - She is using Internet, and the Verizon DSL for this low
bandwidth version does not seem to have a cap.

Yeah, kind of slow, I know. The Verizon DSL website shows their basic
package at "Verizon High Speed Internet .5 to 1 Mbps."

Maybe need to boost both the Internet bandwidth and the RAM??

This machine came with OS X 10.5.x on it. Leopard had just come out
some months before, and Apple finally went to 2 Gig RAM in the next

Low bandwidth DSL or the Mac?

2012-07-12 Thread Al Poulin
Hello:

Do we blame low bandwidth DSL or the Mac?

A member of our Mac user group says her machine is getting slower to
websites and has "YouTube videos stopping and restarting all the
time." Apparently, there are no other performance problems.

This is an iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 20-Inch (Early 2008) with 1 GB RAM
running OS X 10.5.8 Leopard. Apple Software Updates have been applied.
Internet access is via Verizon DSL. Speed test shows:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 1017 kbps (127.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 375 kbps (46.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Here is the hint to do a little sleuthing. Hard drive whine should
remain fairly constant. Fan whine should change from silent to strong
as fan speeds vary. Note the placement of fans and other components in
various iMac models, all fairly standard. In the limited sampling of
three models with the iMac Core Duo 1.8GHz (late 2006) in the middle,
there seem to be three fans in prominence. Do some heavy work with the
optical drive, stress the CPU likewise, and listen. Also, a crude
stethoscope applied to the back of the machine may help locate the
source of the whine.

Your machine seems to be the one in the center of this list, the top
one being the first "aluminum" and bottom one being preceding G5:
http://www.kodawarisan.com/imac_2007_mid/imac_2007_mid_03.html
http://www.kodawarisan.com/imac_intel/imac_intel001.html
http://www.kodawarisan.com/imacg5_isight/imacg501i.html

Question for iMac techs: Could there be more than the three fans
visible in the photos? Could one be always on?

Whine could possibly be from one of the several fans. Does whine go
away instantly upon putting the screen to sleep? Fan sound may

Thank you Beverly. Indeed, I now trust the web site. While messing
around in Safari Show All History, I found several lines with "https,"
although I did not see that security indicator in real time. It
appears that security kicks in when the URL includes "direct/
controller.block. " So I made my transaction.

Then, in a second round of email where I mentioned specific absence of
"https" and padlock, the response included this: "TracFone Wireless
assures our customer that we have secure transactions online."

Credit Card Security Not Visible

2011-10-06 Thread Al Poulin
Is there technology whereby vendors provide security on credit card
checkout transactions with no "https" or padlock appearing on the
browser window, whether Safari or Firefox? Would they be negotiating
digital certificates behind the scenes with no visible evidence of
that?

Example is cell phone vendor TracFone.
http://www.tracfone.com/

In answer to my query about their policy, TracFone claims they go "to
great lengths to implement technology and security features to
safeguard the privacy of your customer identifiable information from
unauthorized access or improper use…."

Hi Felix:

This is not about fixing bugs; it's about enhancements.

I love Time Machine. I am not an early adopter and did not use Time
Machine until I picked up an early model Time Capsule on close-out.
This saved my bacon several times, within minutes of stupid mistakes.
I use CCC weekly to a separate drive.

I do not use a third-party TM scheduler simply because the ones I know
about do not have a feature I would use.

Time Machine Wakes iMac

With OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, Time Machine does not run hourly when
I put the iMac to sleep from the Apple menu. But Time Machine runs
hourly whenever I allow my iMac to put itself to sleep, say for the

You might consider looking for a retail OS 10.4 disk set which should
include OS 9. That would cover your currently installed OS with a
license and provide the Classic mode as well. At least, my gray non-

did not give me a separate OS 9.2 boot partition.

TechTool Deluxe Froze on Restart

2011-02-17 Thread Al Poulin
On 24" iMac with Snow Leopard, used AppleCare's TechTook Deluxe 3.1.3 on
bootable DVD to run hardware checks. Upon finishing and finding everything
normal (skipped surface scan), the Finder menu's options did nothing. System
Preferences did not open. Used the TTDlx Restart button and that gave me the
rainbow pinwheel.

Took my shower for bed. Returned to iMac. Forced shutdown with long press of
on/off button. Startup with Option key gave me the hard drive and the Optical
disk as choices. Picked the hard drive and, after a while, things were back to
normal.

On a second attempt at using TTDlx, did not see its Restart button, but the
Finder Quit command led to another Quit command and then another readiness to
test.

What happened? Is there a more graceful way to restart to the hard drive?

I do not know if I can help, but somebody here might be able to if you
provide more details. Are you attempting to use the Apple Mail client
or something else? If SMTP does not work, that means you cannot
receive. But can you "send" e-mails?

First thing -- Are you giving the initial connection process enough
time? I mean lots and lots of time! Maybe even 10 minutes or so. As
I recall, when I upgraded from Panther to Leopard (no Tiger in
between), Leopard's Apple Mail was working a long time with the ISP
for authentication with each of my two accounts. It was driving me
nuts! After the first connection, things worked very well. Check
your ISP for their authentication requirements and any coaching they
can give you to connect with Leopard. Some ISPs are excellent in
helping out, even to detailed instructions at their web site or by
phone. Other ISPs???

Did this computer work with e-mail before the upgrade? If yes, and
you have stored old e-mails in mailboxes, do not delete the account in
your client, unless you back it up on another media. If you delete
the old account, you will lose access to the old mail. Before the
Leopard upgrade, what version of OS 9 or OS X were you using? What
mail client? After the upgrade, can you access your old e-mail? Can
you access your e-mail account at the ISP via their web mail? Does
sending and receiving work that way? You can try a test with a new e-
mail account at the ISP and create a corresponding new account in your
mail client. If the test account works with new name and password,
then you know the system is working. Before the upgrade, did you copy
by hand all the mail client account settings and use the same exact
settings after the upgrade?

If this does not help, please give us more of your troubleshooting
details.

Dan has the winner. Get the external HD, clone both your machines at

iMac Very Warm But Not Running

2010-12-16 Thread Al Poulin
The iMac is now working normally, but I'd like to know if it is on the edge of
permanent failure.

This is the 20", 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (Mid 2007) machine, the first
"aluminum" model, with original hardware, and running Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.4.

In the latter part of Dec 14, my wife said that her iMac "would not start up"
when pressing the start up button. There was no bong and no activity on the
screen. When I checked it on the morning of Dec 15, it would not start up. In
a room where the temperature is 63° F/14°C, I found the entire unit to be
unusually warm. Facing the screen and reaching around the back, the warmest
area was in the upper left. With a stethoscope, I verified that fans and hard
drive were not running. Turning off the power and on again at the UPS several
times produced no change. Turned off the UPS power for about five hours. With
the iMac now cold in the late afternoon, it did a normal startup.

Checking the Console Logs for both the Admin and the User accounts, I see
nothing to show why the iMac was warm but not running. Both "All Messages"
logs show a shutdown by user about 8:15 PM on Dec 13, and then a startup about
7:48 AM and shutdown by user about 2 1/2 minutes later on Dec 14. These logs
show nothing until I started it up after allowing it to cool down on Dec 15.

Is there such a thing as a partial startup with no bong from not pressing the
button hard enough?
Can the machine shut down only partially from the Apple Menu command?
Should I look at other logs in Console?

I have excerpts of both logs, going from the shutdown on the 13th to the
startup on the 15th, in a 37 KB folder, ready to send if anybody would like to
look at them.

Thank you,
Al Poulin

On second thought, instead of messing around with Safe Mode, I'll just
wait a week or two for Apple to fix the package and try then.

For this, I would also check with OWC (macsales.com) online and maybe
by phone and with crucial.com online. In some cases, a machine that
does not require matched pairs will deliver higher performance with
matched pairs, but for most users in real life, that increase is not
really noticeable.

iTunes Nuisance

2010-09-13 Thread Al Poulin
What could possibly cause the iTunes application to launch itself three times
in 4 or 5 minutes this afternoon, and do it again repeatedly at random
intervals? What could cause it to launch itself when this iMac is in sleep?
iTunes is opening with a screen for downloading music, importing CDs, and
watching tutorials, all of which I do not care to do. Is Apple playing games
with this machine?

Running OS X 10.6.4 on iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with iTunes 10.0.
Several weeks ago, this random launching also happened when I was running the
latest version of iTunes 9. The only way I used iTunes 9 is to occasionally
listen to Radio. I have not used iTunes 10.

Other Apple Stuff in the House: Old style Apple TV, wife's MacBook, and wife's
old style iPod Touch, all using WiFi on Apple Express 802.11g and syncing her
iTunes. My iMac is set for WiFi on Time Capsule 802.11n, but AirPort is turned
off in favor of Ethernet to the Time Capsule. Apple Express and Time Capsule
are ethernetted to a Verizon FiOS box whose WiFi is turned off.

Nice thought for the future. Also thinking about the future, you may
end up with a drive larger than 120GB, now hard to find.

I like dealing with OWC,

Putting TV Shows on Hard Drive/DVD

2010-06-15 Thread Al Poulin
With Snow Leopard on an iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and with Safari 4 or 5,
how can I capture a TV show or video clips that are viewable on the Internet?

I would like to store selected videos on the hard drive and on CD/DVD. What
third party software would I need? If this is possible to do, is it legal?
Here are a couple examples.

This show is available online until mid-September.
http://www.nbc.com/who-do-you-think-you-are/video/brooke-shields/1216049/

NBC Direct is a Beta release for PC users, but not Mac OS X or Linux. The DRM
allows download shows for unlimited viewing on the machine to which downloaded
until expiration of a temporary license, and backup to another media or machine
is not possible. But is there a better Mac OS X solution other than Boot Camp?

At http://www.history.com/shows , a few shows such as Pawn Stars and Ice Road
Truckers are available for download in iTunes.

To put a finer point on this, Apple calls the versions one pays for,
such as 10.2, 10.6 "upgrades." The free changes denoted with the
second decimal such as 10.6.2 are "updates."

That is a very good start with good habits.

But an advantage of separating the bootable backup from the TM backup
is that when one of those external drives fails, you still have the
other one available. Also, it is best to connect the bootable backup
drive to the computer ONLY when actually doing the backup or a
recovery. Disconnect it from both the machine and AC power when it is
not running. I clone three or four Macs to separate, bootable
partitions on a drive about once a week. Some folks do it more
frequently. Some folks keep two bootable backup drives, having one
off-site in case of calamity at home base.

By its nature, a TM external drive is connected to both the computer
and AC power at all times, making it vulnerable to lightning and power
hits. I have all four Macs running TM to a Time Capsule.

Excellent leaning. Consider making that external drive a bootable
clone with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. Alternatively, use the
external drive with Time Machine. Or take the best of both worlds by
getting two external drives, one for cloning and the other for Time
Machine.

Yes and yes. Watch out for your own data. You should do a complete
backup of anything you do not want to risk losing. Also, verify that
you meet the minimum requirements for memory and disk space. Some
iMacs of that vintage came with half the required RAM. But moving to
Snow Leopard has been the easiest and slickest upgrade of Apple's OS
yet.

To be legal with Apple licensing, you should buy the full software
suite, "Box Set," which includes iWork and iLIfe. Your wife will be
glad you did. It is technically possible to install the cheap version
of Snow Leopard, but that license is legal if you already have Leopard
on the machine.

Read the standard Apple license agreement. But this seems legal to
me, since the computers to which they belong will not longer exist.
One can assume that the software is not loaded on any other computer.
Years ago, I bought two "eMac Applications" from a Mac parts dealer
just to load two copies of AppleWorks 6.2.4 on newer Macs. I am still
using those licenses as I have migrated to two Intel iMacs. Of course
I removed AW from the older machines before letting them go.

It occasionally happens, not always. Apple designs its machine with
RAM that is available at the time. In a year or so, the RAM
manufacturers improve their technology, and they sell higher capacity
RAM. The newer RAM is usually, not always, backward compatible into
Apple's original design. I cannot address the technical details of
how this happens. So I would depend on Crucial and OWC to give
accurate, up to date info. After all, they have money back
policies.

Not to be flip, but do you mean the first in the list of two or the
first model built? In any case, I'd look at the Apple specs on their
web site. That reflects the status of available RAM at the time of
design. I'd also look at what both Crucial, and Macsales (OWC) and
maybe other reputable vendors are willing to sell for the maximum.
That could more than the Apple spec.

Re: Snow Leopard won't play with my printer...

2009-10-04 Thread Al Poulin

Bill:

First of all, it seems that your older Intel iMac came with Tiger
10.4.4 and therefore may not boot from Panther. I'm not sure about
that. And your later Intel iMac would have come with a later OS X.

Presumably, your friend's G4 eMac does not have OS 9 installed, the OS
9 drivers are not installed, and whatever version of OS X is on it
does not have Classic on board. If it is running Panther or Tiger,
your friend's original installer disk(s) should have Classic
available. But you may not wish to impact that machine's software
configuration, unless the owner is kind of techie and offers to do so.

As I mentioned in another list on this topic, you could try to "Find
someone locally with an Mac running O9 or Classic." If available,
that would be the easiest thing to do. But your next best alternative
is indeed something like what you propose here. You may need to use a
second external FW drive if you do not want to erase your backup files
on the drive at hand. The likely issue is that your current backup
drive may be using the GUID file system if you set it up with an Intel
Mac. The G4 eMac will boot only from a drive formatted with the APM
(Apple Partition Map) and not from a drive with the GUID Partition
Table (GPT). With Leopard (and likely Snow Leopard), you can find a
setting in Disk Utility to format in APM.

Yes you can with Snow Leopard. As always, you should back it up
first, because there is always the risk of destroying access to the
onboard files. But if already formatted with GUID, that stops the
show.

No.

No. But if that drive is GUID, it will not boot the G4.

If you format a drive in APM, there is no reason to install Panther.
I propose you bring an external drive to the G4, format it in APM,
install OS 9, and then do your printer business.
>
> E) Can I install 9 from the images or would I have to burn discs and
> install from those?

This is analogous to installing from a .dmg download. You should be
able to mount the disk image and install the software. You should be
able to do all this without impacting the friend's G4 configuration
except possibly for temporary use of his Desktop. I'm not sure that
installing OS 9 directly from the disk(s) to the external drive will
work. You may have to first copy the image to the Desktop.
>
> If there's anything I'm missing or forgetting, please give me a whack

Barring any clarifying comments from other folks on this list, any
remaining questions involving the G4 would be best taken up on the
lowendmac G-List (G3-5 List). You may have lost some of this list's
audience with the "printer" theme of the original topic.

Good Luck,

No. For Internet service, the speed chokepoint is usually in the
cable modem, the cable hookup beyond it outside the home, and in the
Internet itself. Ethernet is always better than wireless for internal
local area networking within the home between computers.

> If not, any
> suggestions on what i can do to increase performance?

First check your cables. Make sure that your Ethernet cable from the
modem to the router is plugged into the router's "WAN" port, possibly
yellow in color. You may need to educate yourself in setting up the
router, or at least in checking its settings. It is possible that the
router is set for features you do not need and which usually slow down
performance. Is the router set for assigning the IP address to your
G4 via DHCP?
>
> Would i have better speed going wireless myself?

It is way too early to think about that extra complication.

Go here for their Speed Test on your Internet performance under
varying conditions. Router vs no router. Roommate's wireless vs his
Ethernet vs your Ethernet.

Hello Beverly:

I would have been happy to come to you offlist, but you did not

I guess my last comments are that I suspected this whole business had
something do do with yahoo problems which I had seen reported

Re:

2009-07-26 Thread Al Poulin

Tim:

I thought I explained it adequately here:
http://groups.google.com/group/imaclist/t/0ecb067bad10b6bc?hl=en

But the mystery lies, I believe, in how Google Groups is handling the
traffic, and I cannot fully explain that. The two nonsense messages
appeared in the imaclist Digest:
imaclist - 6 new messages in 3 topics - digest
Date: July 20, 2009 3:23:48 AM EDT
The Digest held a thread with no entry in the TOPIC line. It contains
the two nonsense messages plus two more. The third message was
Brian's item which was further quoted outside the thread. The fourth
message was by Jarett DeAngelis at Notre Dame who quoted Brian's
message simply as the occasion to ask about FreeBSD and to comment
about the paucity of traffiic in this list.

When I click on the link at the beginning of the thread,
http://groups.google.com/group/imaclist/t/cfa4d146f7a6dc51?hl=en
Here in the 'FreeBSD on iMac G3' thread, everyone can see three
messages, but not the two by ""s. yaz"" and not Brian's. message
except as a quote within the three. Jarett's message is the first,
while quoting Brian's.

Possibly the two "s. yaz" messages never appeared in List mode,
possibly someone cleaned them out of the online version. A search on
the sender's name fails to get a hit.

Tim, do you want me to quote the entirety of the two messages in the
Digest version of the thread where Brian's message appeared including
the garbage? Does anybody?

A few minutes prior to Brian's post, there were two "no subject,"

Re: Two WLANs or One?

2009-06-26 Thread Al Poulin

Everything is fine. iBook plays with Time Capsule. Setup is both
AirPort boxes cabled to Verizon Router which is set for DHCP and WiFi
turned OFF, both boxes in Bridge mode, and Time Capsule set with File
Sharing ON via AirPort Utilities "Disk" button.

But I am embarrassed that the AirPort Express was not set to Bridge
mode as I had said earlier. I just relied on my son's assurance on
that without checking myself. Hmmm, can't always trust those IT
people, eh?

Before discovering the error, he spent about 20 minutes on this with
the iBook and iMac side by side, doing Terminal voodoo with sudos,
looking at IP addresses, and pings, all to verify that the setups were
not okay. While explaining things to me, he mentioned that he does
this Terminal stuff half his work day.

Again, thanks for the advice and support.

Restarted Macs and unplugged/replugged power to Airport Express and
TC.

That was a nice hope, but the iBook on WLAN B still does not see the
TC for backup on WLAN A. And when the Intel iMac is on WLAN B, it
does not see the TC for backup either. But both get to the Internet
no matter what cabling configuration I try. The iMac is fine when I
select WLAN A in AirPort.

By the way, I recabled the AP Express to the Verizon router, so that
it and the TC are peers again. And I turned the Verizon WiFi "on,"
using DHCP. That makes no change. So I still need to find new
settings for the AirPort boxes.

I sent my original post to my son living out of town. When I talked
with him, in two seconds he said we need to let the Verizon router do
the DHCP to the client machines, just as you indicated in your first
answer to me. But to put this generic plan in motion, he wants to get
into my AirPort Utility on his next visit to adjust settings in the TC
and AP Express. Maybe in a day or so.

Will let you know. Maybe I'll give up on this and just run one WLAN
with the TC set to 802.11, both g and n, in the 2.4 GHz band, giving
up the advantages of the 5GHz band for the faster machines.

Bruce:
I slept on this, literally! Anyway, I was hoping something like your
explanation would work out. But as implied in my original post (and I
just verified it again), the G4 iBook on WLAN B cannot see the Time
Capsule via AirPort. The iBook does fine with Time Machine via its
Ethernet connection to the Verizon router. When I rearrange boxes on
a book shelf, I will physically connect the iBook to the Time Capsule.

To be more clear, I should have stated in my original post that the
Time Capsule (2008) is the base station for WLAN A and that the
Airport Express is the base station for WLAN B. So, to partially
repeat my original post:

QUOTE:
WLAN A:  802.11n only (5 GHz) to maximize throughput for iMac and
MacBook.  Want to reset Apple TV to this net.
WLAN B:  802.11g
(2.4GHz) for G4 iBook, two iPod Touches, son's iPhone
and his
business secure laptop PC.  Currently handles Apple TV.
Both are set at WPA2 Personal.  Both access Internet in separate
Bridge mode via a Verizon router which has Coax connection to
Verizon's FiOS fiber/coax conversion box (Optical Network Terminal-
ONT) outside the house.  Verizon router's WiFi (802.11b/g) is turned

off.
I want the iBook to work seamlessly with Time Capsule.  My wife needs

to sync MacBook and iMac iTunes with Apple TV and iPod Touch.  Are

there ways to set up these machines and accessory devices for these

functions with the two separate networks?  Or is it best to put it
all
under the Time Capsule?
UNQUOTE

I believe all machines and devices would work well in one WLAN with
the Time Capsule base station set for both 802.11g and 802.11n in the
2.4GHz band. But there I lose the speed advantage for the Intel iMac
and the MacBook in having their dedicated 802.11n network in the 5GHz
band.

As things stand now, the MacBook can work with the iPod Touch on one
network and must manually stitch to the other network for Time Machine
to the Time Capsule. The iBook cannot even see Time Capsule. So I
was hoping there could be a way to use some method of File Sharing to
transcend the two networks.

That is the setup, via Ethernet. But my question revolves around
being able to let iTunes sync seamlessly between machines of one

As I mentioned in my original post, we are in bridge mode. To
elucidate the interface, the "Connection Sharing" setting has three
options:
Share a public IP address
Distribute a range of IP addresses
Off (Bridge Mode)

The relevant paragraph in the Apple design document says:
"Â If you don’t want your wireless device to share its IP address,
choose “Off (Bridge
Mode).” If you set up your device in bridge mode, AirPort computers
have access to
all services on the Ethernet network, and the device does not provide
Internet
sharing services. See “You’re Using an Existing Ethernet Network” on
page 36 for
more information about setting up your wireless device as a bridge."

Thank you Bruce, I think I know what you are saying. Both Airports
are set for DHCP to the client machines, but I think you are saying
the Verizon router should do that, correct? It is already set for
DHCP, so I only need to turn on its WiFi. Also, would that force me
to run the Time Capsule at the slower 802.11g instead of n?

On the Airport side, would I be changing the setting in Connection
Sharing, or doing something with SNMP? If in Connection Sharing, do I
select "Share a public IP address" instead of the "Off (Bridge Mode)"
setting?

If I am close to understanding you, why is is best to make the change?

Two WLANs or One?

2009-06-23 Thread Al Poulin

Can I run two wireless local networks or should I merge all functions
into one WiFi 802.11g/n net?

This is my first venture in setting up a WiFi device, a Time Capsule
(2008). A couple years ago, my son set up an Airport Express. Now we
have an aluminum Intel iMac and a MacBook in the mix. The current
setup is:

WLAN A: 802.11n only (5 GHz) to maximize throughput for iMac and
MacBook. Want to reset Apple TV to this net.
WLAN B: 802.11g (2.4GHz) for G4 iBook, two iPod Touches, son's iPhone
and his business secure laptop PC.

Or is it best to put it all
under the Time Capsule?

Thanks for all the insight.

Al Poulin
