Windows Mobility Center

This is a great feature for laptop users. Click Start, Control Panel, and
then click Adjust Commonly Used Mobility Settings under Hardware And Sound.
The Windows Mobility Center provides buttons and sliders that can help you
quickly adjust the volume, power on your wireless adapter, connect a second
display or turn on presentation settings (among other features). Your
laptop's manufacturer may have customized this console by adding additional
buttons to help you configure other settings, as well.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] daily tip for the last several days

I'm a bit behind, so hang in there for the following tips:

Daily Tip:
Excel: Add A Check Mark (Fast)

You can insert a check mark into a spreadsheet via the Symbols menu, but a
fast way to do it is to select Wingdings (from the Font menu on the Home tab
of the Ribbon), press the ALT key, and type 0252. Note that you must use the
number pad. Another hint: scrolling all the way to Wingdings in the Font
menu is a pain. Instead, click it and then type wi. You're there: Press
ENTER and your cursor returns to the page with the Wingdings font.
***
 Daily Tip:
Word: Add A Check Mark

Check mark symbols are easy to insert in Microsoft Word 2010. Click the
Insert tab on the Ribbon and then click Symbol. When the menu appears, click
More Symbols. When the Symbol window appears, click the drop-down menu next
to Font and then select Wingdings. Use the scroll bar to the right of the
symbols to scroll down until you see the check mark symbols. (They're at the
bottom of the list, in our experience.) Click the symbol you want, click the
Insert button, and click close. Your check mark is there.
***
Daily Tip:
PowerPoint: Automatic Slide Advance

Presenters commonly advance slides by clicking with a mouse. If you'd like
the slides in PowerPoint 2010 to advance automatically after a period of
time, click the slide you'd like to change and then click the Transitions
tab (in the Ribbon). Next, check the After box under Advance Slide in the
Ribbon's Timing group. At this point, you can use the Up and Down arrows to
select the length the slide should run. (You can also enter the time via
your keyboard keys and then press the ENTER key.)
***
Daily Tip:
Excel: Add A Chart Title With Chart Layout

The Chart Layout feature is one way to easily add a title to your chart in
Microsoft Office Excel 2010. Click your chart to make the Chart Tools tab
section (which includes Design, Layout, and Format tabs) appear on the
Ribbon. Click the Design tab (if it isn't already selected) and then find
the Chart Layouts group. Click Quick Layout and then choose a layout that
has titles in the places you want them. Finally, click the title to enter
new text.

The best method, perhaps, is to add a JAWS dictionary entry (into the

then add into the replacement field, copyright. Save changes - control
s. Alt-F4. Job done.

Hi Janie,

Press the Insert / Jaws Key + 4, on the number row above the main keyboard.
This opens the symbols list. Arrow down through the list press enter on
the symbol you desire. Pressing enter will place the symbol wherever the
cursor is sitting. I have no idea how you want Jaws to speak the symbols
list but, by default Jaws will read it just like anything else! Take care.

Hi Alan Gerald,

Yes, the Auslogics program does a much more thorough job
when it comes to cleaning / defragmenting the registry.
Personally, I feel it does a much better job performing all
the tasks that the program provides. I run the Paid for

The paid for version comes with a lot tools that I haven't
tried, just because I don't completely understand what all
they will do. The tools I use the most are, Boost Speed,
which consists of a scanning process that defragments your
harddrives, cleans / defrags the registry, cleans other
fascits that I'm not going to bore you with but, are common
cleaning processes. In the Boost Speed, you can also Erase
browser history, Erase Windows history, Cleanup temporary
files, Optimize memory. These jobs/ tasks are all run
separately. The scanning repair process that I spoke of
earlier is also part of the Boost Speed portion of the
program is a separate task from the other 4 tasks'. Below
is a list of other Tools included with the program that are
run individually;

Disk Maintenance / Cleanup.
Disk Maintenance / Defragment.
Disk Maintenance / Repair disks.
Registry Maintenance / Repair.
Registry Maintenance / Defragment.
Free Up Space / Remove duplicates.
Free Up Space / Explore disks.
System Status / System information.

System Tweaks / Optimize Services.
Speed Up Internet / Automatic.
Speed Up Internet / Manual optimization.
Disaster Recovery / File Recovery.
Disaster Recovery / Rescue Center .

Many of these tools I haven't tried because I have read

have tried do use. Take care.

Mike,

Ok, thanks. For the $50 per year, do they give you plenty of
upgrades etc. during the year? I'm sure the program is good
but that seems like a lot every year unless they are
continually giving you a lot more things. Most programs you
buy the license and then just use the program until you

Quick Auto Correct Tricks

AutoCorrect usually provides a helping hand by fixing common spelling
errors
automatically, but you can also use it to create symbols that spice up
your

document and can make it more accurate. For example, typing (c), (r), and
(tm) create ©, ®, and ™ symbols, respectively. Typing -- or -- creates
à

But how often should you defrag your hard drive? There is a lot of
controversy on this issue. In the old days when hard drives were much
smaller, it was necessary to defrag fairly frequently. But today's high
capacity drives probably require less frequent defragging. I have read that
some experts even question the value of defragging at all, arguing that it
results in little improvement in computer performance and subjects the drive
to unnecessary wear and tear that can shorten its life. I really don't
think it is necessary for most home users to defrag more often than once
every two or three months , although some other list members might beg to
differ. Any thoughts?

Re: [JAWS-Users] daily tip

2011-10-28 Thread Dan Rossi
I pretty much agree with Gerald. Back in the day, I would defrag my hard
drive regularly, especially when I had everything on one partition. Now
that my drives are little used, I mean, some of the partitions are less
than 25% used, I defrag much less often. On my system partition, and
programs partition, I rarely defrag because I don't do a lot of installing
and uninstalling of programs and such, so the data on those partitions
don't change all that much. No need to make the drive work for no reason.

I've also read that defragging on solid state drives is actually
detrimental to the drive. Not that I have a solid state drive as a system
drive. Although, that would be nice.

Now, on my data partition, where there is a lot of data migration, new
files coming in, old files being deleted, I defrag that more often. But
more importantly than defragging is general clean-up. Dumping cookies,
temp files, blah blah blah.

Anyway, that's my two cents worth.

Daily Tip:
Disk Cleanup

Defragmenting your computer periodically can greatly enhance the computer's
performance. While helpful, all defragmenting does is tidy up what is on
your computer; to get rid of unnecessary files such as temporary Internet
files and whatever is in your Recycling Bin, run Disk Cleanup as well. Think
of it this way: Defragmenting sweeps the floor and Disk Cleanup takes out
the trash. Click Start, Control Panel, Performance And Maintenance (in
Category view), and Free Up Space On Your Hard Disk. The Disk Cleanup will
run automatically. Once the analysis is complete, simply follow the prompts.

2011-10-28 Thread Steve
Defragging is available for any drive. Unless you delete a lot of programs
and large files, defragging isn't necessary on a frequent basis. You need
to balance the benefit of slightly quicker file access on a defragged disk
against the extra disk activity generated by the defrag process.

The reason why defragging isn't recommended as often on an SSD disk is that
the solid-state disks have a limited number of read/rewrite cycles. Also,
the more read/write cycles you do, the amount of time that the floating gate
transistors will store data is reduced. Since you don't have the seek time
of a head searching for magnetic data on a hard disk platter with a
solid-state drive, I see very little reason to ever defrag them.

For more info on solidstate drive design and data storage, see

Hi Alan Gerald,

Yes, the Auslogics program does a much more thorough job when it comes to
cleaning / defragmenting the registry. Personally, I feel it does a much
better job performing all the tasks that the program provides. I run the
Paid for program, it is $50.00 per year can be run on 3 machines. The
paid for version comes with a lot tools that I haven't tried, just because I
don't completely understand what all they will do. The tools I use the most
are, Boost Speed, which consists of a scanning process that defragments your
harddrives, cleans / defrags the registry, cleans other fascits that I'm
not going to bore you with but, are common cleaning processes. In the Boost
Speed, you can also Erase browser history, Erase Windows history, Cleanup
temporary files, Optimize memory. These jobs/ tasks are all run
separately. The scanning repair process that I spoke of earlier is also
part of the Boost Speed portion of the program is a separate task from the
other 4 tasks'. Below is a list of other Tools included with the program
that are run individually;

Disk Maintenance / Cleanup.
Disk Maintenance / Defragment.
Disk Maintenance / Repair disks.
Registry Maintenance / Repair.
Registry Maintenance / Defragment.
Free Up Space / Remove duplicates.
Free Up Space / Explore disks.
System Status / System information.
System Status / Tasks.
System Status / Services.
System Status / Locked Files.
Software Control / Startup items.
Software Control / Installed software.
Privacy / Erase history.
Privacy / Shred files.
Privacy / Wipe disks.
System Tweaks / System tweaks.
System Tweaks / Optimize Services.
Speed Up Internet / Automatic.
Speed Up Internet / Manual optimization.
Disaster Recovery / File Recovery.
Disaster Recovery / Rescue Center .

Many of these tools I haven't tried because I have read about them how
they work but, I really like the Tools I have tried do use. Take care.

Daily Tip:
Disk Cleanup

Defragmenting your computer periodically can greatly
  enhance the
  computer's
performance. While helpful, all defragmenting does is tidy
  up what is on
your computer; to get rid of unnecessary files such as
  temporary Internet
files and whatever is in your Recycling Bin, run Disk
  Cleanup as well.
  Think
of it this way: Defragmenting sweeps the floor and Disk
  Cleanup takes out
the trash. Click Start, Control Panel, Performance And
  Maintenance (in
Category view), and Free Up Space On Your Hard Disk. The
  Disk Cleanup will
run automatically. Once the analysis is complete

Re: [JAWS-Users] daily tip

2011-10-28 Thread Rick Justice
Hi Gerald,
How often disk defragmentation is needed will vary from user to user,
depending on how much deletion has taken place.
Since it is such a huge debate, I will just say that I follow a weekly
maintenance routine,
which includes disk cleanup, defrag, security scans, and file backup.
I do find that maintenance takes less time to run when it is done on a more
frequent basis,
which works well for me, since I have multiple machines to maintain.

 Hi Kathy,
 Think of it this way:
Since we have to rely on what the program tells us, and we can't really
 dispute the results,
then all that remains, is to find what works best with Jaws, and we are
 comfortable using.
The important thing is that you run maintenance on a regular basis.

Press Win + b, find the clock, do JAWS to PC and you can right-click

But there is something I have never been able to figure out. David,
would you shed some light on how to see the additional clock? JAWS key

Yes, it does work on Win 7. You can add up to two additional clocks.
Press Win + b, find the clock, do JAWS to PC and you can right-click
on the clock. Alternatively, you can add a click from Control Panel.

But there is something I have never been able to figure out. David,
would you shed some light on how to see the additional clock? JAWS key
+ f12 does not do that, I know, and I don't know how to see the other
clock. Even with JAWS cursor, I can not find the added clock. Sorry

I am on Win 7 with JFW 12.

Thank you in advance. This would be very helpful, indeed.

Alex,

Simple enough.

Press Win + b to get to System Tray. Move around with left and right
arrow till you land on the clock. Bring Jaws cursor to PC cursor by
pressing Ins + - on your keypad if using desktop, (I forgot what the
key stroke was for laptop) and just right-click there without moving
Jaws cursor or anything. That's all.

Hope it helps.

Capital Errors

This is how most of us fix capitalization errors in Microsoft Word: Move the
cursor to the point of the error, delete the offending character, and
replace it with the appropriate capital or lower-case letter. However, there
is a shortcut in Word that lets you simply alternate the character between
upper- and lower-case. Highlight the letter you wish to change and press
SHIFT-F3. This is especially handy for correcting text you may have written
with CAPS LOCK accidentally on.

 Daily Tip:
 Remove Desktop Icons

Over time, the Desktop on your computer can become cluttered with icons
 for
applications and shortcuts. If you don't use a particular icon, select it
and drag the icon to the Recycle Bin. Note the deleting a shortcut does
 not
delete the application it is associated with, so you'll still have access
 to
the program. Make sure, though, that the item you wish to delete from your
Desktop is actually a shortcut; if it's a file, deleting it will delete
 the
 file itself.

computer instructions. As far as being a computer user Graham i think
more instruction or reading on how to use computers will help.
Because he will learn that its a sighted world and that is how
directions are done.
We as blind people have to make those types of conversions all the
time even with the simple stuff.

May I just say that dragging and dropping may not mean a lot to a lot of
people on this list and that rather than doing that to unwanted icons on the
desktop, which is not easily done for a blind user, it would be mush easier
to select them and and then press the delete key.

Daily Tip:
Remove Desktop Icons

Over time, the Desktop on your computer can become cluttered with icons for
applications and shortcuts. If you don't use a particular icon, select it
and drag the icon to the Recycle Bin. Note the deleting a shortcut does not
delete the application it is associated with, so you'll still have access to
the program. Make sure, though, that the item you wish to delete from your
Desktop is actually a shortcut; if it's a file, deleting it will delete the
file itself.

2011-09-20 Thread inthane
there is an application I'm using, I got it for free from somewhere (try
googling it) called USB Safely Remove

it puts an application in the start menu and when you activate it brings up
a list of any USB devices plugged into your machine
it also has a set of menu's, the first is actions in which you can
disconnect, reconnect, and a few other options to use and I have never had
it fail to properly disconnect something when I told it to do so!

I use it with jaws with no real problem

the only flaw I have found with it is that it tends to interpret any second
or third drive type device as the same type as the first one I plug in.

I.E. if I plug in a Kingston thumb drive, then a external Hitachi hard drive
it will call both of them Kingston thumb drives, although it will mark the
first as drive f and the second as drive g so you can figure out which is
actually witch

and reverse, if I plug in the Hitachi first both are called Hitachi drive
though with the drive letter differentiation as above noted.

give it a try, as I said its a freebee (it may have come from
http://www.freedownloadaday.com/)

take care,

That should work but if it doesn't then you can try either of the following:

In windows explorer highlight the drive, hit the applications key and select
eject or something like that. I'm not sure exactly of the phrasing as
currently I'm not on a system with an external hard drive.

The other option would simply be shut off your system and then disconnect
the drive.

Advanced Wildcards

The asterisk (*) isn't the only wildcard you can use in Microsoft Word to
strategically search your text for specific words. The asterisk will search
for a string of characters between two letter, but typing a question mark
will search for only one letter. For example, if you type b?t, Word will
find bat, bet, bit, bot, and but. It won't find boot or boat.
To find words that begin with a string of letters, type (x), where x
is the string of letters you choose. Conversely, you can search for words
that end with a string of letters by typing (x). If you bracket letters
between other letters, Word 2003 will search for words that have the
bracketed letters. For example, typing w[io]n finds win and won. For
more precise searching you can combine wildcards. For example, (pre)*(ed)
finds words such as presented and prevented.

bracketed letters. For example, typing w[io]n finds win and won. For
more precise searching you can combine wildcards. For example, (pre)*(ed)
finds words such as presented and prevented.

David,

Is this search info used inside Word, or from the Windows search to find a
file with a particular string in it?

Thanks,
Annette

Use the Secret Send To Menu Items
When you right-click on any file or folder, you can use the Send To menu
to
create a zipped version, or send the file to an application, but in
Windows 7 there

are hidden items on the Send To menu that can't be seen by default.
All you have to do is hold down the Shift key, then right-click on a file
and access
the Send To folder-you'll see a whole bunch of new items in the list, like
special
folders, and even an item for each one of your drives. It's a really
useful

tip for
quickly sending a file to the flash drive you just plugged into the PC,
without having to do anything else.

Open a Command Prompt from Any Folder
This is one of those tips that most real geeks already know, but chances
are
there's somebody reading this that doesn't know about it. If you hold down
the Shift
key while right-clicking on any folder, including the desktop background,
you'll
see a new item for Open command window here, that will open a command
prompt

with that folder as the default path.
This tip only works in Windows 7 or Vista, for Windows XP you'll need to
use
a registry hack to accomplish the same thing. We can't mention this tip
without telling

you how to do the opposite.
you can Ever been doing some work at the command line when you realized.
it would be
a lot easier if I could just use the mouse for this task? One command
later, you'll

have
a window open to the same place that you're at.
This same tip works in more than one operating system, so we'll detail how
to do
it in every way we know how.
Just type the following command into your command prompt:

Note: You could actually just type start . instead.
