Did you create the signature with the account you want selected in the first table or was “All signatures” selected when you created the signature? I can’t figure out how to move signatures I created under “All signatures” to specific accounts, but if I select the account first and then hit add, it lets me create signatures under each account. Hi Anne, Thanks for this solution. I almost have it working. For some reason though, I am adding the signature to the wrong account. When I bring the mouse the second time it says the correct account name but when I hit Shift+VO+Cmd+Space to drop the signature, it says “Mouse up” on the name of one of my other email accounts. The signature now shows up in that other account and not the account I wanted. Any idea what I’m doing wrong? Never mind. I got it to work. For some reason I have to bring the mouse twice. The first time it does not move the mouse cursor to the correct position but the second time seems to work. Hello all, Is there a new way to rename tables in Numbers? For a while now I have been using Ann Roberson’s solution involving mouse keys etc. but for some reason that doesn’t seem to be working for me anymore. I end up selecting whatever row my cursor started in using the old method. Can anyone recommend another solution for changing table names in Numbers? I have a Dell computer which apparently has just bitten the dust. It's about 10 years old. This really isn't rellavent more so than to say I just put it in storage until I figure out what to do with it. I also have a Yamaha hifi dolby/prologic surround sound 5.1 receiver. This receiver has an ethernet port on the back of it which allows you to connect it to an internet wired connection for things like Pandora, Spottify, etc. Get to the point, Chris, you say. I am, I am, I promise. Stick with me on this. Just hear me out for a sec as this is actually incredibly rellavant to my problem. So, here's the issue. The receiver doesn't have wifi capability. It's stricly only able to connect to a network via a hardwired ethernet connection. Well, this would be all fine and dandy except for one thing. I don't have room on my desk with my router to set the receiver up. Therefore, I had to set the receiver up across the room beside that old busted Dell machine. Due to home regulations set by my landlord, I cannot tack anything to the walls, nor use double sided tape, or anything of the sort, nor can I tack anything across my ceiling. Therefore, there went using a token ringed topology, let alone a PTP host/client configuration. Therefore, what I was doing was connecting via wifi to my home network's router across the room. This supplied internet connectivity to me on the Dell machine. Then what I did was, I ran an ethernet cable from the on board ethernet port on the back of the Dell tower to the ethernet port on my Yamaha receiver. Then, finally, in Windows XP, I was able to go under Control Panel, Networks, select both my wifi connection as well as my ethernet connection, hit the application's key, or rather, right click, same thing, and then select bridge connection from the context menu. Once done, it made my wifi connection carry down to my ethernet port. So, in other words, as long as I have an internet connection on my wifi end, then whatever got plugged into the ethernet port hardwired used that exact same connection. So, now that the Dell system has gone to its grave, and is there rotting, LOL! just kidding, seriously though, I'm trying to achieve this same exact thing with Yosemite 10.10.3. No matter what the heck I do though, try as I may, I just can! not! seem to get this to work. So far, I went into System Preferences, Sharing. Under here, I first selected the internet sharing service in the table. Then, making sure the box in the first column of that table row was unchecked, I moved down and set the share from popup button to wifi. Then, in the share to table, I made sure that the only thing checked was ethernet. Then, I went back to the services table, checked the box beside the Internet sharing service, and started up the service. I should add that all the above things were done while the ethernet cable was plugged in both to the mac, and to the receiver. I then tried getting the receiver to go out online via internet, but it wouldn't. I wondered if something got turned off in the receiver's menus, so I tested with an old laptop I have which doesn't even have wifi ability, only ethernet. It didn't work there either, so trust me. It's not the receiver here that's at fault. I went back to System Prefernces, then to network. I noticed that the first service in the table was eithernet, not wifi, even though wifi is my primary means to connect. Therefore, I went to the actions popup button, and to service order, I think it's called... something to that effect. Using the Voiceover's drag and drop abilities, I dragged the connections around and got them so wifi was first, then Ethernet was second. This way, wifi takes higher priority. This didn't fix the issue. Next, still in network settings, on the ethernet connection, I noticed though connected, it said that it had a self assigned IP address, and will not be able to connect to the internet. The IP address it's showing is: 169.254.105.163. Obviously, from another machine on my network than the mac, if I try pinging this address, it times out instantly. I can't even do a tracert query. It doesn't even complete the first hop if I do. Under Network Settings on the mac, on the Ethernet

These bible sites are great, but Logos gives you the ability to cross reference between the biblical text, texts in the original languages, commentaries, do word studies, etc. It allows you to upload and add to your own reference library. It’s a pretty nice software package. I would also be interested to know if others have had success with desktop clients. That’s a good idea, but in this case Numbers does not change the cell references into header names. It works if I want to sum the cells in one column, say Electricity, over the range of rows under the header of January, but for whatever reason it won’t let me sum multiple columns, such as the 4 columns under the header Utilities, over the range of rows in January. Maybe the header referencing feature just doesn’t work like this. Speaking contents of merged cells in Numbers
Hello all, I have taken a break from the list for quite a while but I’m back with a question about Numbers. When I merge cells, I would like for voiceover to read the content of the merged cells as I arrow across my table. Right now the announcement I get is “H1 through K1 added to selection. H1 through K1 selected.” If I use VO and the arrow keys, it reads all cells as blank except for the leftmost cell, H1, where it reads the text correctly. If I interact with the merged cells, I can read the contents. Are there any settings I can adjust so that VO just reads me the contents of merged cells instead of telling me the range that is highlighted? Keeping the range announcement is fine but hearing the contents is what I really want. If you aren't trying to record it, couldn't you just use your built in microphone as input and your external speakers? It's not recording quality obviously, but depending on what you are doing, this set up will allow someone to hear voiceover and any other sounds coming from your mac. You could probably use whatever microphone you want as long as you are using the external speakers for all of your sound. You can disable the extension at any time in safari, just like you would do for any extension. Open the preferences dialog with Cmd+, and switch to the extensions page. There is a list of extensions. Select the one you want and interact with the scroll area. Find the check box that says enable and uncheck it. Does anyone know of a step by step guide of how to tag someone using Facebook and voiceover on the mac? I was able to do so back in December but now I can't seem to figure it out again. I don't know if Facebook has changed or if I'm just not remembering what I did correctly. 6 or 8 dot braille for brf files
Hello all, I have a BRF question. When reading a brf in text edit, I turn off automatic braille translation. As far as I can tell, I have to use 8 dot braille for the brf to be represented correctly. Is there a way to read a brf file in 6 dot braille correctly? Currently, when I uncheck the 8 dot braille box, it does funky things like adding a number sign in front of lower cell symbols so that the en sign becomes number sign 5 etc. Anything I can do? Thanks for this tip Teresa. That made things much more readable. Incidentally, when I tried 6 dot braille after the transformation, it still made similar mistakes. It almost looks as though automatic translation gets turned on if you try and read in 6 dot braille. Hi, I am experiencing this periodic choppiness in speech and even sluggish response from VO. Restarting VO helps sometimes but sometimes it doesn’t. When it is at its worst, I also hear fan noise as though my laptop were running hot or some process is eating up all my CPU. Any tips of what to look for in activity monitor? Hi April, Are you interacting with the web page before you try to navigate it? You need to move to the part that says html view and interact with it using Control+option+shift+down arrow. Then you should be able to use VO+left and right arrows to move through the page. Interacting is confusing at first but not bad once you get used to it. Hi Nick and all, I have punctuation set at “Most” and in Numbers when I have negative dollar amounts VO says dash before the dollar amount, as in dash $125.00. When I change the verbosity setting to some punctuation, I get no indication that the negative sign, or dash, is there. Renaming a table in the new Numbers using Mavericks
Hi all, I used to use the Inspector to change the names of tables in Numbers but am no longer able to do so with Mavericks and the new version of Numbers. I see many of the old features from the inspector in the format area, including a checkbox that is called “Table Name,” but don’t see any way to change the table name. When I hit Cmd+Option+I to open the inspector, Voiceover says “Show Inspector” but my cursor isn’t put into the inspector window and I’m not sure how to get to it. Does anyone have any tips? Select the message or messages you want to move, then press VO+Shift+M to bring up a context menu. Move to is one of the options. Press right arrow to get into a list of mailboxes and select the one you want and press enter. Just a thought: Several of us had a similar problem a while ago. The fix was to go into the Preferences in Safari, choose the Advanced tab, and then check the box that says Show Develop menu. Then, go into the Develop menu from the menu bar and select Disable Local File Restrictions. For whatever reason, the default was to not allow local files to be opened in safari. Hi Traci, You can delete a station from within Piano Pub. Select the station by double clicking with the track pad like you would do to play it. Then, stop interacting with the stations table and VO+right arrow until you hear Dash button. This lets you delete the station. Press option+enter on a cell to enter the cell to edit it. This will work for text, but for editing a formula, highlight the cell in question and press VO+Shift+F3 to turn off cursor tracking. Then stop interacting with the table/layout area and use VO+Left arrow to navigate to the formula editor. Interact with this field and you should be able to use normal text navigation commands to edit your formula. Don't forget to turn cursor tracking back on once you are done. Accessible video conferencing/presentation software
Hello all, Does anyone have a recommendation for a good, accessible with VO, video conferencing software? I'm looking for something that will support maybe 40 people or so and I would like to be able to share documents or a slideshow presentation if possible. Does google hangout do this? And has anyone had success using it with VO? My experience with google hangout has been limited but I have struggled to even find the button to start the live feed in a hangout sometimes. Yes, you need to download the Learning Ally Audio book manager to do this. When you run it, it syncs with the LA website and your bookshelf and gives you the option of downloading anything on your bookshelf. You will also need the Learning Ally read here app to play the books on your mac. Both of these apps are available from the learning ally website. Hi Robin, It is definitely possible to create your own and edit APA style documents in Pages. This was the style guide of choice when I completed my masters in education last year and I did most of my own formatting. I know that someone on this list also has an APA template you can use as well. The biggest thing to learn about is using the inspector in pages to manage all of your formatting, etc. Use Command+Option+I to bring up the inspector and explore all of the line spacing, paragraph style, and list settings under the text tab. Hi Phil, I have not used it much but the proofreading function on the mac will catch this extra white space. I access this by pressing VO+Shift+M to pull up a context menu and arrowing down to the proofreading sub menu. I agree that the Spell/Grammar check in MS word does seem to be a more efficient alternative if you have access to windows because the one function addresses all your mistakes at once. I also like the feature to see the word/mistake in context when using MS Word so I can more easily tell what the correction should be. As far as I can tell, the only way to see this on the mac is to close the spell check window and find where the cursor is in the document, which is only sometimes reliable. I can't speak to the accessibility from an instructor's point of view, but both my grad school and current employer use blackboard as a way of posting info. Most things are accessible, even though some may be cumbersome. Finding files to download and announcements are fairly simple to do. problem reading brf files on mac
Hello all, It's been a while since I tried to read a brf on my mac using a braille display. I thought that I should be able to open it in text edit and turn off braille contractions and be good to go, but for some reason that isn't working right. For some reason VO isn't representing the braille symbols correctly. Dropped symbols, such as the symbol for con or in have a number sign in front of them, as if they were the numbers 3 and 9. It mangles other contractions even worse. As far as I can tell, this is a VO or braille display problem and not just bad transcription. I can't actually navigate to the number sign in front of these symbols, which tells me there isn't actually a number sign in the brf file. I tried it with two files, a book from BARD and a practice exam from the National Certification in Literary Braille Test. Both had the same problems. I'm running the latest update of mountain lion with VO and a Brailleconnect 32 bluetooth display. My braille translation table is just plain english but the problem persisted even when I switched to UEB. Has anyone run into a similar problem? What settings might I change to fix this? Hi Robert, Two tips to help you out: Use command+T in Pages to pull up the font dialog box. You can then change any of your font attributes from here. Use Command+Option+I to open the inspector window for your document. The inspector has a number of layered tabs you can use to navigate through your various options. There is a tab for changing text features, including color, line spacing, tab size, etc. Using these two strategies I was able to format my papers in APA style in grad school. I will do some fiddling, but I would like to get this figured out. Here’s what I need to do to set up an APA-style document. The font needs to be 12-point and Times New Roman. The document needs to be double-spaced, with a 0pt “spacing after” option (no extra spacing between paragraphs). The document needs to have a running header and a plain page number in the top right corner of each page. All margins must be set to one inch. So, how do I do all that? Those are the general guidelines for the initial set up of an APA-style document. Of course, there are countless rules regarding writing style, formatting of figures, equations, numbers, abbreviations, etc. I should note that I don’t want a template—a template teaches me nothing; I need to figure out how to change these settings myself, and build my own template, if I so desire. To show the develop menu in the menu bar, go to the Preferences dialog from the Safari menu. Select the Advanced tab and you will find the option to show the develop menu. Trouble reading new bookshare books in xml format
Hi all, I know there have been a few threads on accessing bookshare books in xml format over the last month or so, but I wanted to follow up to see if anyone had found a solution to the problem I am encountering. I can read bookshare books that I downloaded months ago just fine in the xml format, but for some reason the books I just downloaded only open an empty file in safari. I'm not sure why that would be unless something has changed about the way bookshare is formatting their files. Also, when I download a book, it no longer comes in a zip file, but is downloaded as a folder and ready to go. Any thoughts as to why I am not able to open these new books would be appreciated. One way to get around this is to set a web spot at the place you left off. Hi Jeff, There are a handful of us who have had this problem in ML. There were one or two threads about how to expand these mailboxes, if you want to search the archives. Several solutions were presented but the one that worked for me was to go to my mailboxes table, use VO + down arrow to navigate past the trash folder to the name of the account I was looking for, interact with the name of the account, and press VO + \. When you find the name of the account, it should say something like collapsed disclosure triangle. If it works, VO will tell you that the folder has been expanded. I tried VO + \ several times before it actually worked. I also tried switching to classic view temporarily. I'm not sure if that made a difference. When going through a large amount of emails, I usually stay on the subject column since the sender column doesn't always tell me what the email is about. My mail is sorted with the oldest at the top and newest on the bottom, but this might not make a difference. I start at the top of the table of messages. Typically, when I press delete, the email gets moved away and the next email takes it's place, this is the email below the first email if you press the down arrow key. OK, so far, this has been the case with all previous versions of Mail. The new twist is that when you press the delete button, the next message that comes under focus depends on which arrow key you last pressed. So if the last arrow key you pressed was down, the focus will move down when you press the delete key. However, if your last arrow key was up arrow, be careful, when you press delete, VoiceOver focus moves up and not down. Gigi, I was having this same problem. NO matter how many people suggested that I use VO \, it just wouldn't open for me. But, I did a couple of things and was able to fix my problem. I'm not exactly sure which of these did it, so maybe you can try them all? First, I switched to classic view. I then went to my list of mailboxes and when I got to the collapsed account, I interacted with it and tried VO \ on it. This worked to expand the collapsed folder structure. I then went back to modern view and tried it a few times and it also worked to interact first and then try VO \. Not sure why this worked, but it did. I would try interacting with the collapsed folder and then hitting VO \. I don't really think switching to classic view did anything for me. I hope this works for you like it did for me. Yes, I use the duplicate function to make copies of data sheets for different students/classes. This works well for the purpose. Although, you have to get used to not editing the original file. I suppose you could lock the file. Then, whenever you tried to edit it, you would be prompted to duplicate it or unlock it. Also, when I select duplicate from the file menu, I am not prompted for a new file name until I save or close the file. I have only used the feature in Numbers though. Re: Mudding on the mac.
You can download Tintin from http://tintin.sourceforge.net/ It comes as a tar archive that you have to unpack. I believe the built in mac utilities can handle this, but if not, something like the unarchiver works great. Run the resulting file. Your mac will classify it as a unix executable file. Opening it from finder will open a terminal session etc. Use the command #help to get a list of tintin commands. I have been reasonably successful using tintin in terminal. I had to play with
the VO cursor settings some but here is the configuration I like and have saved
as an activity.:
Keyboard follows VO cursor: Yes
VO follows keyboard cursor: No
Insertion point follows VO cursor: Yes
VO follows insertion point: no
Basically, I can't find a way to keep VO from interrupting itself when new info
hits the screen, but setting up your cursors this way means that you will not
lose your place even though new text has been added below the point where your
cursor is.
Tintin also has a nice scripting ability built in. I have found it helpful to
gag blank lines, effectively cutting down on the number of times VO might need
to interrupt itself when a new line comes in. The way to gag a blank line in
Tintin is:
#gag {^$}
I have also gagged all kinds of other unnecessary spam and am working on ways
to display critical info that are spoken faster.
These approaches have made mudding viable for me on the mac, even if it is not
quite what things were on the windows side.

Disclosure triangles are a way to hide or reveal extra info or options. If the disclosure triangle is collapsed, the extra options are hidden and if it is expanded they are displayed. Press VO+Space to toggle a disclosure triangle. In mail, expanding a disclosure triangle shows the list of messages in a thread. These can also be expanded and collapsed with the right and left arrow keys. I have played with Zoom some. There are a handful of resources for mac on the interactive fiction archive page. Some of the mac resources work better than others with VO. Hi, There was just a similar thread about reading bookshare books on the mac. I use safari to read them on the mac. Just open the xml file from your daisy book in safari and read away. If the headings are marked in the file, then yes. If not, I set web spots where I stop reading. Sometimes these are saved across VO sessions and sometimes they aren't. The find feature also works well if you remember the name of the chapter you stopped reading, and some books have a table of contents with links. I use TinTin mud client to access muds. It's not the best thing in the world but gets the job done, especially if you play with the cursors so they do not follow each other. Also tintin has a nice gag feature so you can easily eliminate unnecessary lines, such as blank lines. I found a table I can read in pages
Hello all, It has been my experience that tables are completely inaccessible in pages. However, recently I have come across a couple of files that have table objects in them that I can navigate and interact with. They show up after the body and before the footer, at least on the two files I have seen. Has anyone else encountered this? I can't figure out why the tables would work in these specific files. It would be nice to figure out though because I would like to make files containing these objects. I'll be honest that I haven't dedicated too much time to figuring this one out. Another way to edit cells in Numbers is to move to the cell you want to change and hit Option+Enter. This will put your cursor in the cell for editing. You can navigate to any point in the cell by using the arrow keys or arrow keys + the option key. I go into the view menu and select single or double page for viewing. That way, when VO wants to jump to the top, it is limited to the page or 2 that are displayed instead of the entire document. I haven't checked it out since the update, but before, it was under options. I would enter my address/poi, then hit the options button. It is under route profile. I have been able to use TinTin for mudding of the mac pretty successfully. I set up an activity for terminal so that the VO cursor does not follow the keyboard or insertion point. This means that even though VO will interrupt itself, it doesn't move my cursor all the way to the bottom, so I can continue to arrow through/use find to figure out what is going on. TinTin is nice because you can set up gags, triggers, and aliases like other clients. Gags have been especially helpful in getting rid of unnecessary info being spoken. I have not learned to set up a sound pack for TinTin, but I hope it can be done. Hello all, I am having a hard time entering new credit card information on the papa john's mobile site because whenever I enter a value, such as my credit card number, Safari reformats it with commas and even rounds the value to the nearest 10. Hi Donna, I haven't looked at this in a while, but there is a button labelled calibrate in the speech recognition dialog. It should bring up a slider that you can move around until it is more accurate. I can't tell you what the slider does, just that that I moved it around until it was more accurate. There is an edit button towards the top right of the mail display. Double tap Edit and then double tap the messages you want to delete. You will notice that as you move through your messages they will be read as selected or unselected. When you are done selecting everything you want to delete, go to the bottom of the screen. There are several choices, such as move etc. but the one you want is delete. I go to the blndmicemart webpage and all I get is how to contact them and nothing else. I google the blind mice mart movie volt, and I get a page saying the movies have been uploaded to sendspace, but no movies are listed on the page. It says for our member's but there's no way to be come a member that I can see. What's going on? am I missing something? It's been an exceptionally long frustrating day, so it's entirely possible the problem's all me, and I'm missing something very obvious. :) Kari. Hi Christene, Once you have opened the edit info dialogue, you want to get to the options tab. There is a list of several tabs at the top of the window. Once on the options tab there is a pop up box labelled Media kind. If you want your files to show up somewhere else, this is where you would change it. Unfortunately, saving it as a movie is not an option for mp3's. I have mine under music and list the artist for each as Blind Mice Mart. That way they are all together. Also, could you provide the link you are using to download stuff? As others noted, the link is no longer on the home page. Also, the links I got searching through google appear to bring up a blank page in safari and webkit.
