Listers,

Has anyone run into the problem of sharing workspaces that were created on
one machine, across a W98 peer-to-peer network? The problem is that all the
file paths in the workspaces start with C:\, and of course that's not how
the other machines on the network see my hard drive.

I sure someone has dealt with this before.

MI Project Requirements

2000-08-16 Thread Swayze . Natalie

Hello all,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out with this:

I'm working on a web-based mapping project using .html maps created with MI
6.0, and corresponding .mdb files for the MI .tabs used.
For the end product, we would like to have a form created on the website
where clients could update their information, submit the form and update the
.mdb. ( we would also like to have the maps automatically updated, but I'm
assuming this would require MapXtreme?). Essentially we would like an end
user having only Proviewer, to be able to download the saved .wor files for
each .html map( as well as view the .html version), download the database
itself( in .mdb format), and update their information/submit it to a
webmaster from a Form( compatible with MSACCESS).

Could someone provide a basic heads up on the software requirements,
processes etc. that would be required ? We are currently working with
MSACCESS, NetScape Composer, and MapInfo 6.0.

MI MapInfo 6.0 and Microsoft Access Database

2000-07-27 Thread Swayze . Natalie

Hello all!

I'm working on creating some html maps based on a Microsoft Access Database
file. The files contain company locations and information, and the locations
are displayed with links to the information for that company.
The database itself however will be regularly updated and modified, and I'm
not sure which program would be best to use to "manage"/update the data(
MSAccess?MI??). I understand there's some database linking capabilities as
well...would this allow both .mdb and .tab files to be simultaneously
updated, and would this be compatible with the .html end format?

The end users will not be using MI, but would also like to enable them to
modify the information from the website via a form( i.e so companies can
update their information themselves and/or add new entries/

Any assistance greatly appreciated!

MI Interactive Web Mapping

2000-07-25 Thread Swayze . Natalie

Hello all!

I've just installed version 6.0, and am experimenting with the new Hotlinks
and HTML publishing functions. What I would like to do is create html
coverage's showing company locations labelled with the company URL. I can
make the maps interactive in MI, but there's no links included in the HTML
version...I would like to enable and end user( without MI installed )to be
able to view the maps, click on the company locations and be redirected to
that website, all from their web browser.
Is this possible with MI 6.0, or will I need MapX/MapXtreme??

If I uncheck the box the data is shown in MI in the browser

because I can select an item in the browser, click on Find Query and it goes
to the correct point on the map - but no symbol!

  Any clues?

Subject: MI Access - Datatransfer to Mapinfo

I just have started with Mapinfo and have a "basic" question ref. data
exchange
between Access - Mapinfo.

Problem: I have got an Access DB which will be updated regularly, using
another
DB (Lotus Notes). E.g the new data will be typed manually into Lotus Notes,
and
then transferred (link or export) to Access. As Mapinfo cannot access
ODBC-linked DB within Access (correct ??), I have chosen for now to export
everytime the data completely from Lotus Notes via ODBC to Access, e.g.
deleting
and overwriting the old Access DB.

This implicates, that the geocoding information in the already existing
Access
DB will be lost, and I have to start geocoding the whole table again !!

Does anybody knows a better way in doing this, so that I do not lose
everytime
the geocoding information stored in the column "Mapinfo_id" and have to
geocode
it over and over again.

Many thanks for your help,

Martin

MI Creating Objects

2000-07-06 Thread Swayze . Natalie

Hello All!

I'm trying to create objects for a table of company locations(
companies.tab). This table has a column for street addresses, and I've been
able to create one point at a time from a Roads table for the area(
temp.tab). Unfortunately though, there's no "Street Address"column in the
road table, but the points can be created using the "Find" utility with
tthis road layer as the table to search.

Is there some way of creating these points without having to do it one at a
time for each company? Some sort of Join function??

I have a table with a series of columns, one with place name and one with

As of right now, MI automatically labels the table with code #, but I would
like it to be switched to name as the default.( both columns are Character
but only code was indexed originally).
I've tried indexing the names column, moving it ahead of the codes
column...same results.

Hi,

My name is Gilbert Haché, I work for the Miramichi Planning District
Commission (Part of the Local gov. and environnment department) in NB. We
are currently working on such maps at this moment. Service New Brunswick has
create a topo map of all topographic feature in the province. Lakes, rivers,
swamps, tower, power lines, etc. We also have all the property files. Since
the province use the software Caris (which was designed for hydro
application and not Environnmental studies, that you can be sure off!) I
transfer all files in Mapinfo. I Geocoded the data from environnment which
was a little tricky because all We had was a survey in a Excell with UTM
coordinates of more then one UTM zone on a double stereo projection. Anyway,
We have all the data overlaying one an other. All topo feature are on
different layers (separate mapinfo files).

Ex: right side of river and left side are on two different layer. We can
easily concatenate them as we need. It's also very practical for the dispay
parameter when you zoom in an out.

So, We have all wet land, power lines tower, Sensitive area, slopes, etc.
All we have to do is create a buffer of the necessery size on the feature
according to the bylaw. When someone come to for a permit. We see exactly
his property and if there a zone where someone is not suppose to be in.
Since the laws are always changing, We can easily change the size of the
buffer or the metadata in a few minutes.

Hope to have been of some help

Gilbert Haché

Bonne Chance!

Objet : Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) with MI

Hello all,

I'm looking at using MI to assist in the EIA process for Industry
Canada-Spectrum management. As of right now, radio licence applicants must
comply to certain criteria in order to be granted a licence( 30m+ from a
water body, distance from buildings etc.). If these requirements aren't met
an EIA is triggered. As of right now, there is no process for verifying
whether the conditions are met( the applicant merely submits an attestation
form), but we are interested in potentially using MI analytical tools for
this purpose.
If anyone has any suggestions I love to hear them, and I can fill you in or
any other necessary information as well.

RE: MI dBPlanner

2000-03-21 Thread Swayze . Natalie

I'm really not sure how exactly I would be using the software...I work for
Spectrum Management with Industry Canada. Spectrum is in charge of issuing
radio and microwave licenses to various users across the country. I am sort
of the "mapping technician" of sorts so I don't have the kind of engineering
background etc. to fully understand the scope of work involved( I couldn't
tell you even what "RF propagation means").
I do know that in terms of visual applications, there is interest in viewing
density of frequency use and allocation, locating users, identifying
topographical barriers( via profiles etc.), as well as coverage mapping( in
terms of available spectrum, and use).
I hope this helps a little...if you have the time you can also visit our
company web site at:

Hello Natalie,
I have used this product as well as many others of its kind. The best one
to choose depends on what you are trying to achieve. Are you just cell
planning sites for cellular? Are you planning microwave hops? Will you be
integrating field test data with to "true up" the prediction model? There
are a lot of advantages and disadvantages to different RF prediction tools.
The question should be "What do I want from a prediction tool both in the
short term and long term" then make a decision based on that answer. What
do you want to do? I might be able to help. No I'm not a salesman I'm an
RF engineer for BellSouth Mobility DCS.

MI Formating columns

I'm trying to link 2 tables with a common column "PIN#". The problem is, in
one table, the column has a default of 9 digits( Char) with 2-3 zeros
inserted in front of the actual number. In the other table, only the number
itself is displayed with 6-7 digits( i.e. without the zeros).
Is there a way to either delete the zeros from the 1st table or make the
second table 9 digits in length with the zeros added.? Can this be done
directly in MI or a text editor or spreadsheet?
( I have the files in .tab, .dbf, and .txt formats...)
Any input much appreciated!

I'm not sure which commands to use to select the appropriate values from the

Subject: MI Geocoding street tree locations
Date: Thursday, March 02, 2000 10:16AM

I know this is a really elementary question, but being a mere ecologist I
need to once again call upon the collective wisdom of the MI-L.

I have a data base of our city's street tree inventory. It consists of
tabular data of each tree's characteristics and a hard copy aerial photo
showing the location of each tree. The tabular data does not include a
street address or any spatial references.

I have opened the Excel data base in MI and converted it to a MI table.
What I want to do is add points for each tree to a scanned aerial photo in
MI and link that point to the corresponding tree in the data base. The
ultimate goal is for untrained users to use the Info Tool to click on a tree
depicted on the aerial photo and bring up the tabular data.

I know it must be easy, but so far I haven't figured out how to link the
tabular data base with the points on the aerial photo.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

Recently I have noticed there are a number of people inquiring about
how to open a Workspace that was created by a later version of MapInfo.

As most of us are probably aware, the process is relatively simple
yet time consuming. Eg. use a text editor to edit the header of the
workspace, and
then try to eliminate those lines that are not supported be earlier
versions. (can be frustrating at times).

As I have a need to do this quite often, I decided to automate the
process by writing a simple MapBasic utility. I have taken a very
simplistic approach -

1) Read in the workspace
2) Change the header
3) Disregard all lines except for the table information
4) Save out to new workspace

You are left with a stripped down workspace that should load into
any MapInfo version, although you have now lost any formatting, layouts etc.

If you think this may suite your needs, or you just want to check it
out, Email me directly and I will forward it to you. Someone may even like
to build
on the idea?

If there is enough interest I will upload it to the Mapinfo-L site

Does anyone happen to know if there is a clean and build tool for MI(
similar to the Arcinfo tool), which will build polygons from points and
lines?
Prices??

Linking data sets with MI

2000-01-24 Thread Swayze, Natalie: #PNWT - PTNO

Hello all,

I've come up with a bit of a problem in terms of MI table linkages.
I'm working with Autocad( .dxf, .dwg, .dbf) maps of a small towns. There are
2 files for each:one with topological info and another without. I've
imported and geocoded both maps into MI, but there's no information
contained in the tables.
In order to link the map to the non-toplogical data, will the Autocad file
have to be opened with an external database program eg)Microsoft Access? If
so what are the required steps.
Also, to make the whole thing more complicated, the map polygons( town
properties) on the Autocad files are labelled with a "PIN" number and I will
have to reference this id tag somehow to a FoxPro dataset which uses
"ADDRESS" to label each polygon. Will I have to dig up another dataset which
links these 2 ids, or is there a way around it with MI?

ANY suggestions much appreciated!

( I"ve attached the similar ArcInfo procedures)

  Hi Natalie:

Pleased to see things got off to a good start with our data.

I unfortunately have no knowledge of Mapinfo so I'm limited in the
advice I can give you.
Most vendor packages like Arcinfo and AutoCAD have a built in
database creationfunction. That is, once you have built clean
topology, it will allow you to create an external .dbf (database
file) based on the graphics. It will prompt you for what data
entities you want to transfer from the graphics into the tables in
the external database. In the case of our data you would start by
selecting the PIN number as one field you want in the database.
I know in the case of ArcInfo in the build topology phase it computes the
perimiter and area for each polygon. Some packages also compute the
UTM coordinates of the centroid or of the reference mark for the
display label for each polygon. You have a choice of exporting all
of these entities to your external .dbf.
Once you have created your system .dbf you can then import this
data into a secondary database software program like Foxpro or
Microsoft Access. At this stage you have 2 independent sets of tables
in your master database file - the graphics set and your text
database set and you must create some linkage or relationship between
the two. Not always an easy task !
I still think that importing the Stats Canada Area Master file data (ie.
civic addresses) into ourgraphics will do the trick provided you can
place each street address completely withineach of our graphics
polygons. This data - the civic address - then becomes common to
bothexternal databases - the one derived from the graphics and the
Foxpro onecontaining your data. I could take a look at a sample from
your FoxPro data and see if I canspot any other linkage mechanisms if
you wish.
John Leferink or Robert McMahon out at Birds Hill may be able to offer
some further guidance but they too would have to see you Foxpro data
to see exactly what your data looks like that you wish to link to the
graphics - or perhaps your colleagues know some other Mapinfo users
who could help you out.

  All the best.

Hello,

I am having a problem linking to my MS SQL 7.0 server via ODBC.
  I also have MI 5.5

I am able to create a create a DSN and I can at least get as far as opening
the table. However, I do get an error when opening the table but it still
shows me the data. The error I am getting here is: "[Microsoft][ODBC SQL
Server Driver]Connection is busy with results from another hstmt"... but
like I said I can still open the data up in a browse window.

Now It will also not let me make the table Mappable. I even went into the
the SQL DB and manually created a MAPINFO_MAPCATALOG table and for some
reason it still says that I don't have a map catalog and can not make the
table mappable. I have check my table over and over and it appears to be
correct.

Let me know

Damian has a reasonable request and one that seems to identify somewhat of
a weakness in MI, i.e., ability to do something with raster images.

I use MI and Vertical Mapper. Vertical Mapper uses is quite flexible with
grid (grd & grc) files.

All that is needed is to be able to convert a raster image to a .grd file
in one of the formats that is recognizable with either or both MI and VM.

This appears to be a real chore. At least, I haven't seen any 'successful'
results or discussions about it.

All of my inqueries have left me feeling like I'm the only one in the world
who doesn't know how to convert an image into an ascii array of values that
are related to image colors. Then that file could be modified with the
appropriate header and be importable via Vertical Mapper and wa la you have
a grid file that you can do something with.

I have been dinking around, off and on, breaks for Army Navy & Gators and
Bama, and haven't solved it yet.

Damians edge detector idea would be great, but what about drawing the
regions after the image w/edges detected is georeference. Then you gotta
create a new map and trace over the regions. I takes enough time that the
quest for the better way is the only way.

Any hints would be appreciated

Roy

FW: MI Problem with VMapper

getting error messages re:need to increase virtual memory, error values

I've since had a 2nd PC installed with only MI and VM on it and thought this
would solve the problem-no such luck. Any more suggestions? Does someone

Hi there vm user
We use vm since the 1.0 days. it has been working well for us. your issues
seem to relate to your cpu and its memory. I will give you some tips on how
we cheat with Windows to avoid memory dumping.

Large files require alot of memory for processing. At least twice again
more virtual memory than the file you process. This memory comes from your
hard drive. If your hard drive is nearly full you might try making more
memory availble for windows to use. Try 1 gegabyte free memory. Run Scan
disk and Defrag the hard drive.

Increase Ram Memory some programs are Ram memory intensive and will require
alot of memory to keep operating.
We have aleast 128 megs of ram on all of our processing CPU's
The more the better.

Disable window mangement of Virtual Memeory. The last tip is for the risk
taking in you. for some programs we extend the processing limits of our
desktops. To cheat we disable the Virtual Memory and give the computer all
but say 200 megs of the hard drive where the data is on. make sure to
restore the memory control back to windows later when you want the cpu to
work normal for the rest of your processing.

These three functions often allow us to process 1- 3gigbytes data sets using
NT and Windows 95.
Good Luck

FW: MI Problem with VMapper

1999-11-15 Thread Swayze, Natalie: #PNWT - PTNO

Hello all,
I posted a question a few weeks ago about a problem I was having with
Vertcal Mapper. I've been trying to create contours and 3D views using the
CDED data grids which are fairly large files( ~75-90MB). As a result I kept
getting error messages re:need to increase virtual memory, error values
713,810 etc..., basically there wasn't enough space on my hard drive.

I've since had a 2nd PC installed with only MI and VM on it and thought this
would solve the problem-no such luck. Any more suggestions? Does someone
have the VM help desk#?

Good Luck

RE: MI Interactive Maps on CD-ROM

1999-08-27 Thread Swayze, Natalie: WPG

Our company has a database as well as CD-ROM versions or topographical paper
maps. The maps consist of various layers of information and are used with a
MI application called Smartview.
I am interested in producing a webstyle version of this map data, or making
it somehow accessable via our companies web site.
If I could please be forwarded any comments to Thomas re:his request, it
would be very useful and appreciated.

Subject: MI Interactive Maps on CD-ROM
Date: Thursday, August 26, 1999 5:55PM

Dear Listers,

We, at the Bavarian Geological Survey want to use alternative media to
distribute and document geological maps and geological data. Before there
was only the usual analog paper map and booklet for explanations.

Now, we want to produce a kind of interactive CD-ROM where the text
explanations and features on the map are interlinked. As a very broad
approach we thought of a web-style product where the user can use hotlinks
to navigate through the informations, get popup explanations etc. . The
product would be static and self contained, no connection to any data server
is intended.

The user should be able to display various map layers, klick on a map object
to get information displayed (either a database table or a chapter in the
explanation or even a list of possible links) or the other way round should
be possible: klick on a hyperlink in the explanation and have the related
map object displayed.

Since I have absolutely no experience with development of web pages, I would
like to ask the list about the product we would need to develop such a
CD-ROM (i.e FrontPage for the design of the web pages, MapXtreme or MapX for
the map components, product from other vendors). ? Is the intended approach
feasable, realistic or appropriate at all or would somebody recommend a
complete different design of such a product. Does anybody have experiences
with similar projects ?

Are there any licensing issues to be considered using map components
distributed on CD-ROM ?

Any comments, suggestions would be very welcome.

MI saving workspaces

1999-08-05 Thread Swayze, Natalie: WPG

Hello all,

Does anyone know whether or not it is possible to save workspaces onto a cd,
so that they can be reopened from a different pc( i.e. one that does not
have the original .tab files in the directory which they were made in)?

I have a series of map layers( 8 .tab files), which I've created on my hard
drive and created workspaces for which include all of these layers. But,
when saved onto the cds, MI recalls where the tables were originally located
and asks to locate each one individually...

Can this be avoided by saving the individual files to the cd first, and then
reopening them off the cds and making the workspace?
Can the problem be adjusted by opening the .wor file in a text viewer and
changing the directories that MI searches for the tables?

MI problem creating workspaces

1999-07-19 Thread Swayze, Natalie: WPG

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone had any insight on this:

I'm trying to open a series of tables for 2 different areas off of 2
seperate cd's, and save them onto one workspace. I can open each
individually and make 2 workspaces, but I'm unable to add the tables
from one to the other without the cd's BOTH being inserted( and I only
have one driver).
The only way around it I've come up with so far is to save a copy of the
files for one map to a folder on my hard drive, and then load the other
off the cd.
This is really inconvient however and I'm hoping there's a better way to
do this.
Suggestions??

I need help.

I need to find the author of Super Workspace. Here is the web site I got it
from.

http://users.iafrica.com/s/st/stingray/GIS1.htm

The program WORKS very well for compressing MI workspaces into a zip like
file that can be moved to other machines running MI and opened again and
viewed.

The demo is free and works well and intigrates with MI very tightly.

I have been trying to get a registration code so I can upgrade to the full
version but no one has sent me back anything.

Does any one know who made this program?
