Hi Howard,

How are things in old blighty? Perhaps it is a matter of pulling it out and
giving the contacts a clean.
Might be a fairly big job to get at it, unless you can get at it from the
top. If you do pull it out let us know how you did it, currently we have two
201's in the fleet and chances are sooner or later they will develop wonky
switch syndrome as well.

I remember that my old W126's had wire wound resistors behind one of the

There is an idler pulley, loosen the clamp bolt (up top somewhere) and
rotate idler down with a wrench, then tighten clamp bolt.

[MBZ] NTSB/Comair

2006-09-28 Thread RELNGSON
UPDATE ON NTSB INVESTIGATION INTO THE CRASH OF COMAIR FLIGHT 5191

 On August 27, 2006, about 6:07 a.m., Comair flight 5191, a Bombardier
CRJ-100, (N431CA) crashed upon takeoff from Blue Grass Airport in Lexington,
Kentucky. Of the 47 passengers and 3 crewmembers onboard, 49 were fatally
injured and
one (the first officer) survived in critical condition. The following is an
update of factual information developed during the Safety Board's
investigation.
Washington, DC --The Safety Board has completed the on-scene portion of the
investigation. All of the investigative groups will be completing factual
reports, which will be released to the public when the public docket is opened
in
the next several months.

 Accident Sequence
Flight 5191, from Lexington, Kentucky to Atlanta, Georgia, was the third of
three airplanes scheduled to take off in the early morning. The previous two
departures took off without incident from runway 22. Flight 5191 was also
cleared to taxi to runway 22 and subsequently cleared for takeoff; however, the
airplane attempted to take off from runway 26. According to recorded
information,
the aircraft began its takeoff roll, accelerated to a maximum of about 137
knots, ran off the end of the runway through the airport perimeter fence, and
impacted trees on an adjacent horse farm. The entire sequence took about 36
seconds. The airplane was destroyed by impact forces and a post-crash fire.
 Aircraft Wreckage

Witness marks on scene indicate that all three landing gear were on the
ground as the airplane exited the runway. The main wreckage was located
approximately 1,800 feet from the end of the runway. Both engines were examined
at the
accident site and no evidence of pre-impact failure was noted and the thrust
reversers were stowed. The flaps were found in the takeoff position and no
problems were noted with any other airplane system or structure. The wreckage
from
flight 5191 has been moved to a storage facility in Georgia.

 Recorders
The flight data recorder (FDR) and the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) were
recovered immediately and have provided valuable information. Investigators are
continuing to extract data from the flight recorders, the air traffic control
tape recordings and airport video surveillance cameras. FDR data indicate that
the airplane stopped near the end of runway 26 for about 45 seconds before the
flight was cleared for takeoff. The airplane was cleared for takeoff and 6
seconds later started to taxi onto runway 26. It took about 36 seconds for the
airplane to taxi onto runway 26 and complete the turn before power was
increased to initiate the takeoff. FDR vertical accelerometer data indicate
that the
airplane departed the end of the runway about 32 seconds after the takeoff was
initiated. The FDR recording ended about 4 seconds later. Time correlation of
those data continues.

 Operations/Human Performance

Operations/Human Performance group has completed initial follow-up
interviews at Comair headquarters in Covington, KY. The group conducted airport
observations under day and night conditions; a simulator observation of Comair
taxi
and takeoff procedures; and interviews with multiple persons including: ramp
personnel, flight instructors, check airmen, and several pilots who had flown
with the accident flight crew. These interviews provided investigators with
information about procedures and techniques used by pilots for taxi and takeoff
runway identification and information about the accident flightcrew.
Additionally, the Director of Corporate Safety for Comair and FAA personnel
responsible
for oversight of the Comair certificate were interviewed. The group gathered
relevant documents pertaining to the accident flight, flight crew training and
evaluation, operations of the CRJ100, and oversight of the airline.
Investigators are now reviewing interviewsummaries and documentation to
identify areas
for further investigation and evaluation. The group continues to evaluate the
pilot actions that led to the attempted takeoff on runway 26.

 Airport Information/Survival Factors
Runway 22 is 7003 feet long, 150 feet wide, and is lighted for nighttime
use. Runway 26 is 3500 feet long, 150 feet wide but marked to 75 feet wide, and
is not lighted and is restricted to daytime use only. In order to take off from
runway 22 it is necessary to taxi across the end of runway 26. An airport
construction project, begun in 2004, was still underway at LEX at the time of
the
accident. The project was intended to mill and repave runway 4-22 and upgrade
the safety areas at both ends of runway 4-22, the main runway. This project
necessitated changes to some of the taxiways and signage. The group continues
to evaluate the airport taxiway and runway markings, lighting and signage as
well as additional information that was available to pilots. The
Airport/Survival Factors Group will also be documenting the factors that may

Not sure if your 300D has a solid metal control rod or a vacuum hose -
one
or the other will run from the IP to the AT - it controls when the
tranny
upshifts/. If there's a solid rod you may need the plastic bushing at
the
AT end. It's hard to find as it;s not shown in the parts diagrams. I
was
helped by the MB CLassic Dept and I now have the pn for this $2 part.

If you have the vacuum hose, check it;s condition - it may be plugged
with
crap - or it may be damaged and leaking.

That's the quick n easy fix - there's also a gizmo on the AT that
controls
vacuum/shift points - called a modulator - not wiure if all MB AT's have
one
that can be changed -

What year is your W123?

I have an older 300D W123 with the 711.118 transmission and all of a
sudden it will only upshift based on speed and not throttle position as

well. Furthur it won't go into top gear no matter how high the engine
revs. There are no transmission leaks but level seemed to be low when I

checked it. Added 250 ml of ATF and no change. Kickdown function still

works. Not sure what to do next! Throttle link appears Ok and working
, no sure if it has slipped on the splined shaft on the transmission
shaft though.

Regarding level checking , when the engine is not running the level is

some 50 mm or so higher on the dipstick than when engine is running -
is this OK. Furthur the cold fluid level check - is this also done
when engine is running?

I win the auction at 4,900. Seller recieves 2,900 more than he would in a

It's a 1979 with only a solid rod control, no vacuum control. All
linkages are good. Not sure what the correct setting/orientation is for
the lever.

I forget exactly, but you do something like floor the accelerator and
then set the linkage to be all the way forward at the same time.
Something

like that, I had to do it on the Albatross. Made a big difference on
shifting in it, but the linkage had obviously come loose there.

So on Tuesday I looked at Brunnhilde who was parked in front of the
house, as I was pulling out of the driveway, and noticed a chameleon
sitting on top of the steering wheel. Most curious, I noticed its
profile only since it was darkened considerably sitting on the black
steering wheel. So yesterday I hop in to go to the grocery, expecting
lizards to be dashing about the interior, but no such thing. I get to
the store, open the door and a chameleon runs out from somewhere, over
the door frame and onto the outside of the door where it was holding on
(how do they do that?). I close the door and it dashes in the front gap
back inside the car I guess. I got back in after my store run but no
creature to be seen.

This year has seen a bumper crop of chameleons, geckos, and these little
frogs about an inch long that come out at night, that I have not seen
before. The geckos and frogs are noisy as hell when they get cranked up,
even the geckos during the day. Last night there were 4 frogs, two
geckos, and a chameleon on the kitchen window, maybe attracted by the
light or each other. I guess Brunnhilde's is pushing into new territory.

My question is, if I go to sell the car on eBay can I say it has very
rare custom lizard skin seats?

Speaking of cheap beaters, my parents still have my brother's 300SDL.

It does have some body rust (over rear wheel arches), blower motor
(porcupine?), driveline vibes (carrier bearing?), needs a chain tensioner,
and an A/C compressor (Klima replaced)

It MAY need the IP delivery seals done. IIRC it is over 250k on it.

It has had: oil cooler lines replaced within past 10k, new tranny with in
past 50k, rear trailing arl (left?) replaced due to rot allowing spring to
drop out bottom within past 50k. It has fairly new rubber (turanza?) on
it.

It starts and runs/drives. It is in White Marsh, MD. What is it worth?

I have an older 300D W123 with the 711.118 transmission and all of a
sudden it will only upshift based on speed and not throttle position as
well. Furthur it won't go into top gear no matter how high the engine
revs. There are no transmission leaks but level seemed to be low when I
checked it. Added 250 ml of ATF and no change. Kickdown function still
works. Not sure what to do next! Throttle link appears Ok and working ,
no sure if it has slipped on the splined shaft on the transmission shaft
though.

Regarding level checking , when the engine is not running the level is
some 50 mm or so higher on the dipstick than when engine is running - is
this OK. Furthur the cold fluid level check - is this also done when
engine is running?

We had a couple of cans of it that the secretaries were tossing. Cut and
paste done a bit differently these days. Brush the stuff on both the door
and the plastic sheet. After it dries you can stick it on. If it doesn't
line up right just peel it away and restick it where you want. The best
part

is it won't tear your plastic if you want to pull it loose to work inside

Re: [MBZ] cheap wagon

2006-09-28 Thread Michael Hall

You don't know what he bid - thats the whole thing. Thats how eBay works, a
bidder makes a maximum bid, which shows up as the next bid based on the
current bid increment, then eBay automatically raises it up to the maximun
as people bid against you. So you run a no reserve auction, then a few days
later, bid your reserve. There are car dealers that make livings doing this
on eBay. The trick is to use proxy servers to make it look like the
accounts originate and bid at independant IPs, other wise eBay will catch
you and suspend your accounts.

I agree there, but OD's can get huge (thinking [EMAIL PROTECTED])
I recall that BC makes electrolytic caps rated for [EMAIL PROTECTED] (SAL-A

Yeah *pats 7844,DC504,FG504...*. Since most of the electrolytics made
10+yrs ago had a rated life of 2Khrs or less, it is probabably a good bet
that they are going bad... typically by "leaking" DC, but that takes a

Just beware old used caps since they can have nasty resistance properties.

[MBZ] Transmission W123 won't upshift correctly

2006-09-28 Thread Peter Merle

IMAP. It's my favorite form of remote email. Not only does it let you
store stuff on the server, you can have multiple folders. It's handy
when you use multiple computers and want to be able to read your email
from any of them.

Unfortunately, few service providers support it. POP3 is more common,
probably partly because it lowers disk requirements by discouraging
people from storing mail on the server.

I run Linux and use poppy for this very purpose. It's at

 http://freshmeat.net/projects/poppy/

"Poppy is a small Perl script that will individually retrieve only the
headers of mail messages from a POP3/IMAP server and then allow you to
view, save, or delete each. This is especially good for systems with
limited resources like limited disk space, slow connectivity, or no GUI.
It is also good for managing your mailbox when your normal mail reader is
setup not to delete mail off the server or is having problems downloading
large emails."

Works great.

[MBZ] How to adjust AC belt, 240D

2006-09-28 Thread Harry Watkins

1981 240D with loose AC belt. Is the adjustment from the top? What to
loosen? Is there something like the alternator adjustment set up?

It got too dark for a good look at everything after I got the new water pump
installed, so, I thought maybe someone has BTDT and save me some pitfalls.

IIRC, tantalum caps have a wider temperature range and narrower
tolerances. (Electrolytics are usually no better than +/- 10%, with
+20/-10% not being uncommon.) Electrolytics also have a limited life
span -- eventually they dry out. Finally, they're less compact.

All Electronics has tantalums, but I think they have a minimum order:
http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category/140800/Tantalum.html
Digi-Key has been aggressively removing items from their catalog that
contain heavy metals and toxic substances, so that's probably why you
can't find them there. There's a big push in the electronics industry
to use less toxic materials, especially in Europe, where companies are
required to take devices back for recycling.

>

It looks like they're using the capacitor as a filter to shunt noise to
ground. The value is probably non-critical. I'm not sure why they don't
want you to use an electrolytic. This seems like a classic application
for one. It may be the engine compartment is too hot for them.

I always kind of suspected the underlying problem was that the
mechanical AFMs would get worn spots where the signal would get "noisy,"
kind of like a scratchy volume control. I never had a van with "Vanagon
syndrome," or I'd have attached an oscilloscope and found out.

Ideas? Is this a known precursor to something. Is my brake booster stealing vacuum from the shutoff valve...wait that would make it stay running.

Also...I've developed a wicked fuel leak (leaks a puddle the size of a trash can lid in 10 minutes) around the primer pump, but the odd thing is that some of the fuel is pooling in the recess on the top of the handle of the primer pump and it doesn't appear like it's leaking from above.
