That problem is usually that the clamp on the IP where the big Bowden cable ties to the bracket has slipped. It can be readjusted there. Probably nothing to do with your problem, unless the cable's not actually letting the knob push in all the way. > Used to be able to remove the key while running though. You're not supposed to be able to. Just like the interlock works the other way to prevent the knob from being pulled until the key is turned on. Naturally, the Frankenheap's knob and key system interlock is working perfectly. :-) There's a second little Bowden cable coming off the side of the pull knob switch that goes over to the key switch. Sounds like Gump's loosening up a bit! It's native to Mac OSX too. The Mac's problem with the MB manual system is that the wretched GUI front-end seems to think that it can use backslashes as html path separators, which they are not. Happens to work on a PC, though, so guess what leaked through into the build? I wrote a script that automatically made hard-links between where the files really were and butchered up names that the Flash junk can also find. Kind of funny to see a directory full of 'files' that have backslashes in their names but it works. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

OH! That would be really close to the issue. The off does not work really well on Gump anymore. I have to push all the way in and hope she shuts off. When she does not, I pop the clutch and just kill it. Maybe that is not working well anymore and I have to screw around more. Used to be able to remove the key while running though. Maybe that has been resolved with the use of Mobil 1, as many of the other sloppy parts on Gump seem to have gotten closer to spec the more I drive and the longer Mobil 1 runs through. clay On Sep 25, 2008, at 9:09 PM, Jim Cathey wrote: >> I need big help. Re: [MBZ] Trapped key
It is in starting position, but with Gump that just allows juice to flow and the glow dongle has to be yanked to get it hot and then engage the starter. It is off and turns on and off just fine. Stuck in position 2.5. Gump is more of a binary system. Either it is on or off for the key and the position 1 slot does nothing but disengage the steering lock. clay On Sep 25, 2008, at 8:36 PM, Wilton Strickland wrote: > Is it stuck in STARTING position or ON-and-running position? > > Wilton > > - Original Message - > From: "Redghost" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: "Mercedes Discussion List" > Sent: Thursday, September 25, 2008 11:23 PM > Subject: Re: [MBZ] Trapped key > > >> Stuck in full on. BTW, there's a small slot in the face of the cylinder just to the left and above the top of the key slot. Re: [MBZ] Trapped key
Stuck in ignition/master switch? Is it stuck in the #1 position or full ON position? If it's in #1 position, leave it there, remove the cylinder and install a new cylinder - usually takes a minute or so. Immediately order a new cylinder from dealer via Rusty (need VIN). If it's not in #1 position and will not turn, attach a key to a vibrating sander (IAW my procedures of last Oct) to vibrate the lock and improve your chances of turning it to #1 position in order to remove the cylinder. I'll elaborate if you need it. The laundry lint filter I posted is really just a small filter bag hanging in a plastic canister. NOTHING high-tech about it AT ALL. I don't know where you buy filter bag fabric, or how easy it is to buy it in small quantities. A google search turned up http://www.lamports.com/lfbags.htm but they seem like the sort of company that sells in bulk to other manufacturers. For the price it was just not worth it to me to track down this kind of stuff and design and build one myself. The thing will last basically forever, with occasional replacement of the filter bag being the only thing that can really ever be necessary. I'm not sure if the problem is overblown, but my filter grabs enough wet lint to amount to a large fistful every month or two. I'd just as soon keep that out of the septic system, whether it would settle out in the tank or not. It was more lint than that before we got our front-load washer. Bags aren't bad from Rusty. As long as the car isn't a rustbucket they're fairly easy to swap out. As for valves, well, you might be up the proverbial creek without a paddle. There are two series of valves, the early and late (I don't recall what the defining characteristics are - check the M100 Web site.) If you have early valves, you're pretty much screwed. If you have the later valves, they'll cost you a substantial sum if you have to buy a rebuild. Having said this, I would very much caution you to be reluctant to change or replace anything in the system until you know it is set up and adjusted properly. I had a 1962 300SE that presumably had "bad valves" that ended up just needing to be set up and adjusted per the factory procedure. Once that was done it stayed up nearly 30 days without being run (I did have to replace the rear air bags, but the valves were fine.) We used powder almost exclusively in our old top loader and when I had it apart to replace the tub seal I did not notice any build-up. Also, for you front-loader owners... I have this feeling that the "HE" detergent is a rip off by the detergent companies to get us to keep using the same amount of detergent. They've just made it less sudsy. Using a sufficiently small amount of "normal" detergent to avoid excessive suds seems to work just as well (just a general impression, I've not done any kind of rigorous comparison). [MBZ] TRAINEES IN THE TOWER IN AIRLINER "SWERVE" TRAINEES IN THE TOWER IN AIRLINER "SWERVE"
An incident that thankfully ended with some fairly rattled pilots and passengers but no more than a little lost tire rubber begs the question of who is training whom at some of the nation's air traffic control towers. The National Air Traffic Controllers Union says two trainee controllers were in on duty by themselves in the Lehigh International Airport tower when a Mesa Airlines CRJ700 had to swerve (as in the sudden deviation from a straight path) to avoid a just-landed Cessna 172 while taking off from the Allentown, Pa., airport. The widely accepted estimate is the RJ, with 60 passengers aboard, missed the 172 by about 10 feet while decelerating from 120 knots. According to the NTSB, the Cessna was told to take an early taxiway exit but missed and the pilot reported he or she was heading for the next taxiway. The trainees missed that and, thinking the 172 had left the runway, cleared the RJ for takeoff. ** Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? [MBZ] Daimler discusses sale of Chrysler stake/no lint content
GERMANY: Daimler discusses sale of Chrysler stake Daimler has confirmed that it is in talks with Cerberus to sell its 19.9% stake in former partner Chrysler. In a short official statement the company said: 'Daimler confirms that the company is in discussions with Cerberus Capital Management regarding the redemption of its remaining 19.9% stake in Chrysler LLC.' Daimler's statement follows an earlier statement from Cerberus that it had approached Daimler about redemption of the stake. DaimlerChrysler, formed in 1998, was the biggest industrial merger of all time, but the company broke up in May 2007 when private equity firm Cerberus purchased 80.1% of Chrysler. Daimler AG hung on to a 19.9% stake in the company. Daimler said in July the book value of its stake was EUR171m, but the likely market value of the stock it holds is unclear. Chrysler this week surprised many with it's unveiling of three electric car prototypes in the US. However, the company is said to be in deep financial trouble on the back of lower US sales and a product range lacking the smaller and more fuel efficient vehicles that American consumers are turning to. Legacy technology ties between the two firms are not expected to be affected by a Daimler stake sale, at least for the foreseeable future. Cerberus said that it expected all existing industrial relationships between Daimler and Chrysler to continue. It's unclear at this stage why the sale of Daimler's stake is being discussed now. Some analysts have speculated that Cerberus may be seeking 100% ownership prior to a sale. Daimler meanwhile, may be seeking to cut its Chrysler losses and make maximum use of available resources and liquidity in the face of ongoing cost pressures and uncertain demand prospects. ** Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? [MBZ] 190D AC
Well, the AC saga continues. I had to have the manifold hoses rebuilt, installed them yesterday. Pulled a vacuum for 2 hours, then let it it sit all night and day till this evening, still holding vacuum at same level. Put a little 134 in it, sniffer did not see any leaks. Fully charged and it worked of course. Will see how long it holds. Before it leaked out overnight. That was when I found the leak in the front compressor seal. Or so I though. Replaced the compressor, same leak. Thats when I found the pinhole in the hose, right by the compressor. The other compressor probably was not leaking at all. I also noticed that after a while of running, the heater valve opens back up unless you have the dial all the way to min. Anybody know anything about these 201 climate controls? Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: > So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals $425,000.00. Nope. It's $425 each, not $425k. The feds did spend close to 1/2 mil per household in New Orleans after Katrina, when it would have been better to give everybody $100k to help with their relocation expenses in moving to higher ground. Here's what Ron Paul said yesterday, before Bush's Speech: Wednesday, September 24, 2008 Dear Friends, Whenever a Great Bipartisan Consensus is announced, and a compliant media assures everyone that the wondrous actions of our wise leaders are being taken for our own good, you can know with absolute certainty that disaster is about to strike. The events of the past week are no exception. The bailout package that is about to be rammed down Congress' throat is not just economically foolish. It is downright sinister. It makes a mockery of our Constitution, which our leaders should never again bother pretending is still in effect. It promises the American people a never-ending nightmare of ever-greater debt liabilities they will have to shoulder. Two weeks ago, financial analyst Jim Rogers said the bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac made America more communist than China! "This is welfare for the rich," he said. "This is socialism for the rich. It's bailing out the financiers, the banks, the Wall Streeters." That describes the current bailout package to a T. And we're being told it's unavoidable. The claim that the market caused all this is so staggeringly foolish that only politicians and the media could pretend to believe it. But that has become the conventional wisdom, with the desired result that those responsible for the credit bubble and its predictable consequences - predictable, that is, to those who understand sound, Austrian economics - are being let off the hook. The Federal Reserve System is actually positioning itself as the savior, rather than the culprit, in this mess! •The Treasury Secretary is authorized to purchase up to $700 billion in mortgage-related assets at any one time. That means $700 billion is only the very beginning of what will hit us. •Financial institutions are "designated as financial agents of the Government." This is the New Deal to end all New Deals. •Then there's this: "Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency." Translation: the Secretary can buy up whatever junk debt he wants to, burden the American people with it, and be subject to no one in the process. There goes your country. Even some so-called free-market economists are calling all this "sadly necessary." Sad, yes. Necessary? Don't make me laugh. Our one-party system is complicit in yet another crime against the American people. The two major party candidates for president themselves initially indicated their strong support for bailouts of this kind - another example of the big choice we're supposedly presented with this November: yes or yes. Now, with a backlash brewing, they're not quite sure what their views are. A sad display, really. Although the present bailout package is almost certainly not the end of the political atrocities we'll witness in connection with the crisis, time is short. Congress may vote as soon as tomorrow. With a Rasmussen poll finding support for the bailout at an anemic seven percent, some members of Congress are afraid to vote for it. Call them! Let them hear from you! Tell them you will never vote for anyone who supports this atrocity. The issue boils down to this: do we care about freedom? Do we care about responsibility and accountability? Do we care that our government and media have been bought and paid for? Do we care that average Americans are about to be looted in order to subsidize the fattest of cats on Wall Street and in government? Do we care? When the chips are down, will we stand up and fight, even if it means standing up against every stripe of fashionable opinion in politics and the media? Times like these have a way of telling us what kind of a people we are, and what kind of country we shall be. In liberty, Ron Paul Here's what Ron Paul said today, after Der Fuhrer spoke: Dear Friends: The financial meltdown the economists of the Austrian School predicted has arrived. We are in this crisis because of an excess of artificially created credit at the hands of the Federal Reserve System. The solution being proposed? More artificial credit by the Federal Reserve. No liquidation of bad debt and malinvestment is to be allowed. By doing more of the same, we will only continue and intensify the distortions in our economy - all the capital misallocation, all the malinvestment - and prevent the market's attempt to re-establish rational pricing of houses and other assets

[MBZ] [Fwd: I like this Idea Better A must read]
*Subject:* I like this idea much better This will NEVER happen - makes too much sense! This guy hit it on the head !!! I’m against the $85,000,000,000.0020 bailout of AIG. Instead, I’m in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a *We Deserve It Dividend*. To make the math simple, let’s assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+. Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up.. So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals $425,000.00. My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend. Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So let’s assume a tax rate of 30%. Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam. But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A husband and wife has $595,000.00. What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family? Pay off your mortgage - housing crisis solved. Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads Put away money for college – it’ll be there Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs. Buy a new car - create jobs Invest in the market - capital drives growth Pay for your parent’s medical insurance / health care improves Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean or else Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces. If we’re going to re-distribute wealth let’s really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 (vote buy) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President. If we’re going to do an $85 billion bailout, let?s bail out every adult US Citizen 18+! As for AIG ? liquidate it. Sell off its parts. Let American General go back to being American General. Sell off the real estate. Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up. Here’s my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn’t. Sure it’s a crazy idea that can “never work.” But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party! How do you spell Economic Boom? I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion We Deserve It Dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC . And remember, The Birk plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam. Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest. Kindest personal regards, Birk T. J. Birkenmeier, A Creative Guy & Citizen of the Republic PS: Feel free to pass this along to your pals as it’s either good for a laugh or a tear or a very sobering thought on how to best use $85 Billion!! [MBZ] Even worse than I'd guessed
I bought an aircompressor at Harborfreight when I was there a couple weeks ago. Pulled it out Monday to realize it had no oil with it. Bought some oil and yesterday started to fill it up. Noticed a little drip from the sight glass, touched it to be sure thats where it was coming from and the end of the sight glass came off... Compressor oil all over the floor... Looks like maybe it was over tightened by some assembly gorilla... I pulled the threaded part out of the compressor and glued the outer bit back on. A chunk was missing, I remember seeing it fall on the floor, so I JB Welded the hole closed. Will try it again tonight maybe, this is not a terrific start... Its a $90 compressor... -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] 201 index
Just look where the link is pointing from the index, and make sure that the appropriately named files are in that folder. You'll need to copy the files off your CD and onto your hard drive. The links in the index point to files like "../../../w201CD1/PDF/90001a.pdf" so it's necessary to have the CD contents in a folder called "w201CD1" that exists as a sub-folder within the main folder of the index (the one that contains Main.html). Re: [MBZ] OT: Laundry appliances
Alex, It was a top-loader.. Haven't needed to spend any money on a front-loader Bought last top-loader from Craigslist for $100 four years ago and it's still working. This topic reminds me - back in the early 1940's we had a Bendix front-loader washer and hung the wash in the basement in winter and outside in summer. And before that it was a "top-loader" with a manual wringer attached.. Back then there was only powder, IIRC. At least the memory works at times, sorta! Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 34, Issue 141
As the former owner of 2 VWDs, your research corresponds with my experience. My 92 Jetta cracked a head at 100k, nursed it along to 140k before it needed a rebuilt head. Bottom end was still good, but the few VWDs that I heard of on various lists that did make 400 or 450k had so much blowby you could attach a hose to the oil fill hole and leaf-blow your yard. My vanagon na engine lasted 165k before catastrophic ring failure; the TD that replaced it had the same thing happen at 106k miles. Overheat 'em and you warp or crack the head virtually instantly. My engines, incidentally, were not run hot. WIth iron heads they'd be a decent engine. ANd maybe the TDs are quieter, but my NA jetta drove me nuts on the highway with noise, which is mostly why I sold it. ALso, the transverse engined diesels are very tight underhood and harder to work on than benzes, especially with AC and PS. A quantum td 5 speed wagon would be my choice of a VWD, as a good compromise between longevity, performance, comfort, economy, servicability and durability. It's no MBZ, but simplicity has its virtues too. I wondered how long it would take to someone to ask. I didna buy it. Its a $1500 car but not a $1501 car... Don hadn't mentioned that at the time none of the doors locked... Its tough to think about driving 1400 miles in a car (and spending the night with a friend in Chicago) with a car that you can't lock. The undeniable issue with using corn is that it raises the cost of everything else. So instead of just giving them tax breaks and farm subsidies, we also have to pay more across the board for everything from milk to cereal to batteries to soap. Sugar cane and soy are no different. Do any of you have any use for a 802.11b wireless signal booster? I got it without paying attention [actually I didn't know then] that the 'b' would not work with my wireless G. They work down the improvement ladder [n receives g and b, g receives b, but b will not be stable for boosting g or n - according to Linksys]. Depends on your system, and there's several possible ways. I use a Mac (Linux would be the same) and made a link to where the PDF's live: cd cp /Main.html . ln -s PDF open Main.html or, if you'd copied the 201 CD to a hard disk somewhere, there's a directory in it called PDF. Copy Main.html to the directory that contains the PDF directory. (Don't put it down into that directory with all the pdf files.) Open it there. You could also just hand-edit Main.html to make the anchors all point to the right place. There aren't _that_ many of them. As it stands, the links all just want to open PDF/file.PDF, so you just have to arrange things so that such a path works.
Re: [MBZ] 408 Camper
Much as I like the VW diesel I don't think your car will make 500,000 without a rebuild. I did some research back a couple months ago and it appears that many VW diesels get rebuilt at ~250,000 and many more (most?) by 400,000. That said a short block for one is about the same price as a rebuild kit for an MB... They were cheap cars, ment to be thrashed and rebuilt. Apparently they cannot suffer any kind of real engine mistreatment at all and expect to survive. That said I'd like to find one around here in good condition. I *think* I know of a diesel Dasher wagon but even if I wanted to talk to my highschool drama teacher again (no way) that car hasn't run since '90 at the latest. -Curt Date: Wed, 24 Sep 2008 20:45:29 -0500 From: "Wonko the Sane" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] 408 Camper To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 My VW Quantum diesel has 213,360 on the clock and is running strong. Starts much quicker than my 240D in cold temps. I'd put it up against ANY Benz for fun and reliability. Loren babied it, the next owner trashed it, I've (after a rebuild) driven it, and soon the pending Okie owner will thrash it. This car will laugh at 500K on the odometer. Yea, the Benz has history and a giant cool factor. But the vintage VW diesel has a lot going for it.
