Re: [MBZ] Septic problem
Scott, I just use the powder packs from Home Depot, probably available elsewhere. The material is inside plastic that dissolves in the commode releasing the enzyme powder which you then flush. Then I just buy whatever root killer is currently available. I agree about the bleach and other similar items as they tend to kill the bacteria you need in the septic tank to dissolve the "stuff". I clean plates in the trash and the only food particles go out through the dishwasher which is small enough to increase the bacteria, but not big enough to plug up the drain field. As to redoing the drain field, you can add a large dry well as I've had to do many years ago and it solved a bad problem on a 30 year old drain field. Re: [MBZ] Septic problem
It's a matter of degree but bleach kills bacteria that help liquefy the solids and sludge. You must be lucky at 21 years. I called for a pump-out on a new system after 5 years but the guy said I wouldn't need one yet. At 12 years everything suddenly plugged up so solid that I also had to clear the sewage line after pumping the tank. In retrospect I resolved to pump more often, regardless. > -Original Message- > From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of OK > Don via Mercedes > Sent: Thursday, November 08, 2018 10:07 PM > To: Mercedes Discussion List > Cc: OK Don > Subject: Re: [MBZ] Septic problem > > So, bleach into a septic system is a no-no? > Our septic system is 21 years old this year and has never been pumped. So, bleach into a septic system is a no-no? Our septic system is 21 years old this year and has never been pumped. It's been working great (knocking on wood). We asked about pumping it when we bought the place 6 years ago, and the pumping guys said that we'd know when it needs to be done by the sewage backing up in the house. Roger: What kind of enzymes do you use? Kaleb: Many factors effect needed pump-out interval, like tank size, number of people using the system, use of bleach in laundry, and solids like laundry lint, food prep/cleanup particles, etc. The goal is to keep solids (and oils) out of the leach field. Since you say the water is clear and there are bubbles coming out of fixtures, I would guess, as others have said, that it's a vent problem. If you had a full or backed up tank, you would be getting sewage coming up other places, especially something low like a shower drain. Checking the vents is inexpensive. If that doesn't work, you can then proceed to having the tank pumped. Re: [MBZ] Septic problem
There are various vent lines coming off your different fixtures which will then collect to one or more main stacks. These different lines will snake all over the walls and attic or whatever to tie into the roof vent so it would be hard to snake those. I’d guess there’s just something in the big main stack, you could just look right down in there and see if there is anything clogging it. Animal or something maybe. --R Sent from iPhone > On Nov 8, 2018, at 11:34 AM, Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes > wrote: > > I was thinking that as well. [MBZ] Septic problem
Every now and then when a toilet is flushed for example I can hear the kitchen sink gurgle. Also sometimes if somebody is taking a shower I can hear it. Today the kid was taking a shower and the wife said the toilet in the other bathroom bad gurgling. I went and looked and sure enough every few seconds would be an air bubble. The kid then came to me and said the tub and toilet was not draining. I went to the other bathroom and flushed the toilet and it was not draining either. We have been here 4 years now and the septic tank has never been pumped. My experience at the other house as been they seem to require pumping about every 4-6 year and there is no telling when it was done last. There was not sewage backing up it was clear water. Will this indicate the tank is full and not draining or could it more likely be a clog somewhere? I would hate to have it pumped and that not be the problem.
