Re: [newbie] Kinda OT... port forwarding?
I'm not absolutely shure about windows doing port forwarding, because i did investigated for another application and didn't found a native solution. But i had success with Cygwin and the ssh. Basicly wath i did was to use ssh over the windows box with the Cygwin version, then ssh has the ability to do port forward and also encrypt the comunication betwen boxes. Re: [newbie] Hard Drive Question
Hi BJ. In my opinion the size of each partition are given acord the use you intent to give and of course the size of youre disk. i.e. if you have let's say a 80 Gb Hdd. then if youre computer is just for personal usage... the Mandrake Linux Normal instalation will use a partition named / wich is the root of the operative system... (don't get confused about the root user, that's another thing). so into this partition can be alocated all the other directories that the system needs like home, var, usr tmp. But the main reason to create partitions for this directories is to limit the size of each one to an especific maximun size. .i.e. / = 20 GB /Home = 40 GB (because is the home of each user and have to hold the user's documents like music, imgs, etc.) /swap = recomended 2x RAM Memory, let's say you have a 512 DDRAM dim, so create a 1 GB swap partition. /tmp = 5 GB 's and that's all ... there are no especific size or directive that any of the prior directories must be partitions on youre hard drive, but is easier to mantain in case of dissasters or even back up operations. i.e. If for any reason you have to reinstall youre Linux box and you created separated partitions to hold / and /home then you just have to format the / partition and youre documents will be safe on the other partition and ready to use after youre instalation. as you should now, the swap partition acts like an extra ram storage... When you run applications, they alocates them code into the ram memori, but if you have varius applications running at the same time. Because not all the programs work at the same time, there are memory alocated that is not nesesary to keep with the actual information and may be used by active applications, so here becomes important the swap space. At this point the SO takes the memory from the inactive applications and places it's information on the swap partition, feeing memory to use by active applications. When the unactive applications become active then the SO find's the new inactive aplications and does the hole thing again. The only thing you have to be aware is were to install LILO, because if you install on the second master disk, and if youre computer BIOS Setup indicates that the boot must be done with the first master disk, then you will never see the LILO boot manager.. and you will be directed to youre Windows OS. for an easy wine configuration, you can use the winesetuptk programm. It have a graphical enviroment to configure wine. then you just have to launch the programm you wath to test from the shell like this [EMAIL PROTECTED] wine ./MiProg.exe and if works then you are done if not maybe with the next release of wine... Re: Re[2]: [newbie] Modem troubles
The first thing... about the modem... there are a lot of information about the real modems and the winmodems (or toy modems)... and because the winmodems are not based on standards of hardware and communications but on them own cheap technologi... is hard to make every winmodem works on Linux. The external modems (real modems) are built with hardware and software standards for communications so if you programm a driver for the standard communication protocol.. you can be shure it will work with all external modems... but if you try to programm a driver that aplyes only to some kind of hardware... there are no wharanty that this will work with all the hadware. Nevertheles if the driver you found says that works with youre specific winmodem... maybe you have to get deeply on its docummentation or get a real modem... The Second thing. Is not that MCC desn't save youre internet configuration .. is just that you are overwriting this. Let's think that youre modem allready worked... and you configure something like kppp to make a dialup connection or any other... so if you done well you will be connected to the internet any time you dial and youre configuration will be saved. But if you use the wizzard... any time you get into, will be overwriting youre configuration. If you need more help with any of this isues just mail us. My modem is listed in HardDrak(SP?) but there is now no configuration tool* button available for it for some reason. I have no idea whether it is configured correctly or not, or even where to go to do that. The other question I have is, when I go into MCC and look in the Internet section. I have to re-enter my connection details in there each time I go in to try to get this working. It doesn't seem to save my connection information anywhere. I would have thought that once I hit *apply* and *OK*, those details would stay there and would still be visible next time I log in and look at them. Re: [newbie] windows networking
Hi, on my prior Mandrake sistems (9.1,9.0,8) if you whant to use the DHCP option, you must have a HDCP server that provides you the control of the addresses over youre net. So if you don't have it, the easyest thing you can do is use the static ip address assigned by youre selfe. For using the linux PC as a server it must have the 2 network cards on it and one must be connected to the adsl device and the other to youre network hub or switch. then use the DrackGW option of the mandrake control center on Networks and Internet.
