Re: WTF? was OT: new camera
My first DSLR was a used E-20n. Whisper-quiet, built like a tank, and takes wonderful photos. I looked at Olympus for a long time when I started looking into buying my first new DSLR. The great thing about it is that it was a fixed-lens, so I didn't have anything invested beyond the cost of the camera and all the accessories ($120 US + shipping). So, I was free to look around. I was, of course, tempted by Canon and Nikon -- cajoled by friends to go with Canon, so I could be a part of the club. And, was even lured by the guy at the camera shop to try a Sony. But, I stuck to my guns and got the K-x that I'd been salivating over for months. Nary a regret to this day. But, I still like my Oly, and would use it a lot more often if the write-speed weren't so achingly slow. I've loaned it out to a kid to use as a learner camera for his school newspaper. -- Walt On 10/23/2010 6:41 PM, Brendan MacRae wrote: Well, I know it's been a while since I've posted anything but holy crap! Re: WTF? was OT: new camera
Great lens as well. Funny E-10 story: a woman in my department would try to use this camera periodically. She was one of these extremely intelligent, ultra competent people, but she could never get the E10 to to work properly. One day I'm going through thee whole process with her. She aims thee camera and hits the shutter release. Smoke starts to come out from under the flash. I was sure the camera was toast, but it still works fine to this day. My friend bought a sketch pad. ;-). Actually, she later left chemistry and became on of those folks who sails expensive sailboats from point A to B for the rich owners that didn't have time. The most common trip was from the US to the Mediterranean and back. As I said, an amazing person. She met a nice pirate and settled down (on a boat of course). -Original Message- From: Walter Gilbert ldott...@gmail.com Sender: pdml-boun...@pdml.net Date: Sun, 24 Oct 2010 03:45:31 To: Pentax-Discuss Mail Listpdml@pdml.net Reply-To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Subject: Re: WTF? was OT: new camera My first DSLR was a used E-20n. Re: WTF? was OT: new camera
On 24/10/10, Rob Studdert, discombobulated, unleashed: Me too I guess (excepting Canon DSLRs of course ;-) Interesting. Is it the name, the heritage, what? Just curious. After shooting Pentax film for over 10 years, when I got a D60 I wasn't at all enamored with it - it was plasticky and felt a bit cheap. The brand didn't bother me because - let's face it - anyone shooting Pentax doesn't give a stuff about branding. But when I got a 1D mark II it was such a pleasure to use - the layouts of the controls are pretty unconventional, yet once learned were faster than anything I can recall. The actual design of the camera is ergonomically pleasing, and (at the risk of making Godders wince) actually beautiful. Really like it. Seriously - I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the 1D as an object is right up there with an Aston Martin in my eyes. I would imagine that most mid-range cameras aren't to my liking - Canon, Nikon or Pentax - except the K7 that i saw at GFM was really nice - and would definitely consider one (or K5) as the design and ergonomics looked great. So what is the big thing about hating a Canon? -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche -- http://www.cottysnaps.com _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: OT: new camera
that's quite easy. People are free to do whatever they want as long as they don't infringe other people's rights to the same thing - my freedom to swing my fist stops where your face begins. Where words are concerned, people have the right to say any damn thing they want provided other people are not forced to listen to them, and have the right to reply. If they say something actionable, of course, they can expect to find themselves in court - one should not have to tolerate lies - but simply insulting someone as an expression of opinion is something we should all tolerate. Without wishing to dwell on specifics, if B calls G an F all this tells us is that B is in fact an A. Bob How far should tolerance of intolerance extend? From: Steven Desjardins I'm never happy to see anyone just go away. Tolerance extends in many directions. We're never stronger for losing someone, even if that strength is the result of patience on our part. Maybe I'm sensitive to this because I can have quite a bad temper and have said things on occasion that I deeply regret later.
