Re: Photos of trips with Walter
Thanks Ted and Walter. You sure had one heck of a vacation full of wonderful photo opportunities that you captured with style. Evocative and fascinating imagery, especially the Picher series. Thanks Peter. I have downloaded it just in case. My main computer runs Windows XP, but I have a backup computer with Win 2000 and that DLL might be useful. Carlos El 16/11/2010 22:13, P. J. This means I can't use Adobe Lightroom, as a raw converter, though I really don't like it's taking over every aspect of photo management. Now this hasn't bothered me too much as the new Pentax Camera Utility 4 has a much improved user interface, (even though I find it's batch capabilities inferior to RawShooter), but hell it's free. Well, not free exactly. You pay for the license when you buy the camera it's sort of Free). Well the latest upgrade which supposedly included some processing enhancements no longer ran under Win2K. Though it no longer needs an original CD to install, (Pentax giveth, Pentax taketh away). The actual error when attempting to run the application was Cannot find 'UxTheme.dll' with a system path that included /winnt/system32. UXTheme.dll is a WinXp and later OS file that is redraws controls, (doesn't MS ever get tired of screwing up their OS). Well I couldn't let that stand. I mean really The damned software installs it should run! I was able to find a cross compiled version of that DLL originally written for Wine, (a linex Windows emulator), which seems to allow the latest version of PCU4 to run on Win2K. I haven't noticed any major improvement in performance, but some of the dialogs now display better. I'll either be complaining bitterly and reverting to the previous version of the PCU4 or not mention it again and just happily use the improved version. I guess this should stand me in good stead as the latest version of PCU4 supports the K-5 if I have no further problems. Re: peso - perfect pizza
An observation: My daughter is in the Peace Corps in Benin. She gets to see a more traditional version of husbandry than the first world assembly bovine assembly line. Most of the milk there is from goats. The goats are protected and given safe space in which to feed. There sit on Tracie's porch and on occasion she found one sleeping in here bed. It would be no big deal to run away and they don't. Given the lack of speech, this is the best you can do for consent. Of course, the locals cheerfully kill these animals for dinner when needed. This is not a moral issue for them, just the food chain. Over here in North America, the whole process is so industrialized that it's hard for most of us to see this as any part of nature. hi everyone i'm back from three months caring for my 91 old aunty who lost her husband in august after he spent a whole month in hospital ... never again! I never thought caring for an old person would be so trying . she was as happy to see me off as I was to go home at last . it took some time to make sure she could cope by herself with various helpers . We were staying in Laffrey near Grenoble in the French Alps . the weather wasn't too good so I had lots of cloudy skies to shoot ! http://www.flickr.com/photos/la_meduse/5184744458/ and another view near Grenoble in the afternoon . I think it's Belledonne mountains in the distance but i'm not that sure .. http://www.flickr.com/photos/la_meduse/5184144637/ all comments welcome dominique -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
OT I;m such a friggin idiot
I decided to make 6 family calendars featuring 4 pictures from the three family weddings that occured in 2010. I spent almost two hours loading, aligning, moving and adding family dates, and proofing.. The 6 calendars, with tax were about $120.00 CAN. I received them last night, and the first thing i noticed was i made a 1 day boo boo on two of the three anniversaries. My daughter suggested to redo them, but then i have $120 worth of junk of i do. Liz said don't worry, they probably won't notice anyway. I really don't want to spend another $120. Comments. The Sam Abell thread (1)
I'd like to try something, and if it goes well perhaps it will provide a new sort of PDML thread for members to start periodically. Conversations will, no doubt, evolve like wheel spokes off of a central topic (hub), but I'd like this threads hub to be National Geographic photographer Sam Abell. I think there may be multiple pieces of my commentary (below) that you may have different reactions to. I look forward to the discussions that will hopefully ensue. My son-in-law, Ryan McGinnis ( http://www.bigstormpicture.com http://www.bigstormpicture.com/blog ) and I drove to Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska a couple of weeks ago to see a presentation by Mr. Sam Abell (sponsored by Canon). Now this is not going to be a worshipful thread (by any means) at least not from me. Maybe I'm a harsh critic, or maybe I just had my expectations set too high, but I did not see as many photographs in his presentation that I said to myself, WoW. I wish I had taken THAT. That surprised me. Perhaps it was simply his choice of images for this presentation, because when I look at this page ( http://compassrosebooks.blogspot.com/2010/03/sam-abell-national-geographic-stylist.html ) I see a lot of images that I wish I had taken. Only three images on that particular page were included in his 2 hour presentation. What Mr. Abell's presentation and work DID do, however, is stimulate some thinking on my part (which is always good, in my book). As a National Geographic photographer, Mr. Abell has been sent to some of the really interesting places on earth to photograph really interesting subjects that most of us will never get the chance to photograph. It seems to me that there is a spectrum of subjects: Nominally very uninteresting to nominally very interesting. And there is also a spectrum of photographic images: Nominally uninteresting to nominally very interesting. The two spectrums are independent of each other, or perhaps interdependent - depending upon the skill (or luck) of the photographer. Obviously, this is highly subjective. But when I look at a photograph I sometimes ask myself: Is this a great image of what could otherwise be an uninteresting subject, or is this an average image of a very interesting subject? One example, I might suggest, is one of the three Sam Abell images that graced the COVER of National Geographic magazine: http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/staticfiles/NGS/Shared/StaticFiles/Photography/Images/POD/a/aboriginal-teenager-504198-sw.jpg ( http://on.natgeo.com/903wXD ) Is the greatness of this image due to the photographer or the unusual subject? Put another way, if we put ME in that water, would this be a compelling image? On the other hand, consider this image: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FNndI0BvPNA/S7AXaamrd8I/BLA/HNtibpofTPA/s400/Abell7.jpg ( http://bit.ly/cU3pDu ) At his presentation, he included a farther away image. There are a lot of different groups in this branding scene that the photographer had to choose from. He made conscious decisions (which group to focus on, how close to get, framing, etc.) and then he had to have the timing to capture the image when elements converged at an interesting fraction of a second. This is an incredible image and one he says for which other photographers wish to trade him prints (the ultimate compliment). Yes, it is interesting subject matter, but it could be treated in a pedestrian way, which this image is not. While still subjective, I might argue that this is an EMPIRICALLY great photograph - in other words: If you are in the minority that don't think so, you are a moron. :) Sam also has some quotes that are worth of discussion, or at least consideration. One that I particularly like is: It matters little how much equipment we use; it matters much that we be masters of all we do use. Thoughts? Five bucks
I've got my latest Blurb book project converted into EPUB format for e-book readers. It's been an interesting experience. Anyway, the electronic book form is now available on my web site for five dollars U.S. (through Pay Pal). http://www.robertstech.com/ebooks.htm Interestingly, my gross profit on the print book (at $30.00) is less than $4.00. Gross profit on the e-book at $5.00 is... $5.00. BTW: This e-book format is compatible with a variety of desktop and smartphone reader software and all dedicated e-book readers *except* the Amazon Kindle. Seems Amazon is the only one (including even Apple) who refuses to support the open standard. But since the Kindle isn't yet available with a color screen, I decided this isn't a major target for a book of mostly color photography. ;-) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I think he simply points out there are different reasons why a picture is considered great. Well congrats on them choosing your photograph. It is indeed worthy of appreciation by the wide audience it will receive. But as for the value of the photo credit and website address nowhere in the proximity of said photograph, I'd have to say it is near nil. If you have Google Analytics on your web site and have a measureable change in hits once the phone book comes out - due to that alone, I'd be incredibly surprised. Of course, only ONE important person needs to see it to make it worthwhile. Especially given its location, I think I would have tried to give the interested finder of the bio a bit more to chew on than name and web site address. Put another way, if all I was asking for was name and website address, I would have asked for it to be on the cover or in the photograph itself. RE: The Sam Abell thread (1)
Darren, Will comment more when I have time to look at your links. I think you and Miserere have some common opinions here. Look at this piece he has put up on 'What makes a good photograph.' http://enticingthelight.com/2010/02/21/what-makes-a-great-photograph/ I think we don't go to enough exoctic locations to have great photos. :-) I was once showing a group of friends some of my photos from Ethiopia and one of the people commented well, anyone can take good photos in a place like that. I was amazed at the comment, particularly given that the same person has seen many photos of Ethiopia by other friends which are completely shit, and plenty of mine taken locally which are pretty good. Everywhere is exotic to people who live on the other side of the world. I remember coming home one day to find a group of Japanese tourists peering into the window of my house, presumably taking an anthropological interest in the exotic native household.
