GESO: South Downs Way

2012-05-21 Thread Chris Mitchell
Hi all - I've been a bit quiet lately owing to being in the wilds of
Hampshire and Sussex. Lots to catch up on by the looks of it.

Karin and I walked the South Downs Way, a 100 mile footpath from
Winchester to Eastbourne on the South coast. We did it over 10 days
with an extra day in Lewes, the county town of East Sussex. Here's a
flavour with a picture from each day:

bought for covering my flash when photographing IR. I put one of those

really got was a bunch of pink crescents. I played with the exposure

The annual rate is discounted but it doesn't sound like you are

could I sell a million of these?'

I'm an engineer and I don't think like this, Bob. Instead I let to think so
the marketing people in my company. Also the problem (in my eyes at least)
here is that in terms of pixels there is only so much you can do with them.
Few things come to mind - so if you have oh so many pixels you can:

 * crop them as you see fit and still get a decent picture
 * print really big enlargements
 * if you do virtual 3D, your worlds will be more zoomable in, in a manner of
 speaking

That's about it. So the comparison with what Bill Gates said about PC RAM
that someone here made looks invalid to me. PC RAM in particular and PC in
general can do so much more so that adding RAM enables you to do great many
various things. Various being the keyword here. As for pixels I am not so
 sure.

Although I know that you're a car enthusiast, Bob, I still think that cars
can be a valid analogy. If you live in NYC or Chicago or Tel Aviv for that
matter, do you really absolutely certainly need the likes of modern sports
cars? Is acceleration from 0 to 60 MPH in 5 sec going to be a decisive
factor for you vs the car that does so in 10 sec. In theory it may serve you
well if you need to accelerate to escape a predicament on the road (*). But
in the big city such a situation is possibly improbable anyway. The smaller,
more frugal or less polluting engine is an entirely different story, and
even more so in the big cities...

So MP count has to serve a purpose. And although in certain cases it does
serve a purpose, it is unlikely to serve such a purpose for everyone
uniformly. Hence I believe that there has to be enough pixels for 99% of
the people out there, and 24 MP on APS-C sensor is just too many of them,
 little pesky pixels...

 Boris

(*) It may be argued that if you get into such a situation or get close to
it every now and then, you better not to drive at all or drive a slow car so
as to force you to less aggressive driving.

Havent kept up with the fees others are paying - bay photo prints are super.

they can order direct from your site and you can set the markups.
You get a preview of what they are getting if you want to and there

1. you can have your own gallery that accepts the orders, or
2. you can have things posted to one of the photo sites that accepts

If you are planning on making money on those orders,
the disadvantage of the latter one that in most cases such sites
take a big cut for themselves.
Zenfolio is partnered with Mpix.com that does prints.
(I used Mpix for prints directly, and like them.)

However, if all you want is to let people print their own photos
without you profiting from that, sites like fotki.com, I believe
allow that (or at least they used to.)

For the option 1, one of LR plugins from TTG:

I bought one of the TTG plugins (without client response), and
I've been mostly happily using it for my galleries.

With newer cameras having so many more megapixels, rendering the

Re: Today's Peace Rally

2012-05-21 Thread Christine Aguila
Thanks, Ann! No, never got caught up in any violence. All the pictures are
from the rally at Petrillo. The wooded area turned into a staging area for
marchers, readying themselves to head down to McCormick place, so it was very
family orientated prior to the actual march.

I was going to march, but in the end decided against it. Even if I had
marched, I think I would have been just fine. It was the Black Block
protesters (which I labeled Ninja protesters in the gallery) that for the most
part antagonized the police, but that was their intent, and if you view the
Chicago Tribune gallery, they got what they intended.

Darrel went with me, and he would have marched if I wanted to, but in the end I
decided to keep us both safe, so we took some pictures, had lunch and a coffee,
then headed home on the EL. Public transportation was a breeze. I expected
heavier crowds, but never saw them.

Rick Wormer's daughter is working as a street medic. Maybe Rick will give a
different account via his daughter.

To be sure, mine is a warm and fuzzy gallery of the event :-). No
photojournalistic heroics on my part for yesterday's event. I was merely
tourist.

Skirmishes with the police have been reported. The Chicago Tribune has a

DSLRs are ILCs (interchangeable lens cameras). They're not MILCs
 (mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras).

ILC stands for Interchangeable Lens Compact. Of course, it could be Pentax
 doesn't know this.

Whatever. Pentax, Nikon, Panasonic, and Sony (at least) have all
described their products as interchangeable lens cameras. Wikipedia
says ILC may refer to: Interchangeable Lens Camera, a class of camera
that comprise Single-lens reflex camera, Digital single-lens reflex
camera, Mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera and some Rangefinder
camera.

If you want to conclude, from your own certainty in what the
abbreviation *should* stand for, that the new lens won't work on
DSLRs, be my guest, but that seems like a hell of a leap.

family orientated prior to the actual march.

I was going to march, but in the end decided against it.  Even if I had
marched, I think I would have been just fine.  It was the Black Block
protesters (which I labeled Ninja protesters in the gallery) that for the
most part antagonized the police, but that was their intent, and if you view
the Chicago Tribune gallery, they got what they intended.

Darrel went with me, and he would have marched if I wanted to, but in the end
I decided to keep us both safe, so we took some pictures, had lunch and a
coffee, then headed home on the EL.  Public transportation was a breeze.  I
expected heavier crowds, but never saw them.

Rick Wormer's daughter is working as a street medic.  Maybe Rick will give a

To be sure, mine is a warm and fuzzy gallery of the event :-).  No

I woud say that, after the 6mpix era, Pentax is using the same sensor in 2-3
 bodies:

 10 Mpix in K10D, K200D and K-m
 12 Mpix in K-x and k-r
 14 Mpix in K20D and K-7
16 Mpix in K-5 and K-30 (and k-01 but this is a different category for me).
So it should be enough for this sensor...

Does anyone else look at the K30 as a potential upgrade from the K7?

It looks to me like a less-expensive way to transition up to the better ISO
performance of the K5 without quite the financial hit.

I wonder what the downside(s) would be. For starters, it doesn't look like the
mode dial on top has a lock. And I'm not sure there is an LCD display on the

I just started making a list. I welcome additions. It's based on this
leaked set of specifications:
http://stdw.us/J8KF5j

K-30 relative to K-5:

+ video improvements (H.264, frame rates, etc.)
+ focus peaking
+ mysterious AF improvements (i in SAFOX version number)
+ AA battery support

- ISO 51200 (K-30 = 25600)
- top LCD
- no 1/8000 shutter (K-30 = 1/6000)
- slower FPS (but only slightly, 6 FPS, not 4 FPS as previously leaked)
- 14 bit ADC? (guess based on re-using the K-01 sensor processor)

TBD: AF fine tuning, full IS capabilities (sensor shift for
composition adjustment, rotation axis, O-GPS1 astrotracer support),
intervalometer, level, quietness... what else?

Judging from the rumoured spec I would say that K30 pretty much replaces

full frame. At least this is what I personally would find logical from

I just started making a list. I welcome additions. It's based on
this leaked set of specifications: http://stdw.us/J8KF5j

K-30 relative to K-5:

+ video improvements (H.264, frame rates, etc.) + focus peaking +
mysterious AF improvements (i in SAFOX version number) + AA battery
support

- ISO 51200 (K-30 = 25600) - top LCD - no 1/8000 shutter (K-30 =
1/6000) - slower FPS (but only slightly, 6 FPS, not 4 FPS as
previously leaked) - 14 bit ADC? (guess based on re-using the K-01
sensor processor)

TBD: AF fine tuning, full IS capabilities (sensor shift for
composition adjustment, rotation axis, O-GPS1 astrotracer support),
intervalometer, level, quietness... what else?

you can see pictures taken in similar situations with different cameras. In
order to fully appreciate them, you'll need to use the fluidr interface for the
sets so that you can see the exif data.

Up until March 2010 IMGP photos were taken with the K100, after that the K-x.

week-old Florida corn, I'm agin it. Soon, when the crop comes in, I'll be
 fur it.

corn is actually a very political subject, but i don't surmise to know
exactly what trade angle these protesters were taking

In all seriousness, there are debates about genetic engineering of corn for
pest control, export and import issues, and the use of corn for biofuels,
which raises food prices. But as you say, there's no clear position indicated

My impressions with K20D and K5 are the same as Larry's.
I still use both. I do not hesitate to shoot at and above ISO800 with
the K5 when necesssary.
(I use ISO 200 whenever I can, with either of them).
With K20D I do not shoot anything critical (noise-wise).
I still like them both, however ;)

 Bipin,

I don't have any exact side by side comparisons, but if you go to:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/collections/72157603434373350/

you can see pictures taken in similar situations with different cameras.  In
order to fully appreciate them, you'll need to use the fluidr interface for
the sets so that you can see the exif data.

Up until March 2010 IMGP photos were taken with the K100, after that the
K-x.  After I got the K-x, to all intents and purposes, I didn't take any low
light photos with the K20.  Up until then, I'm having a hard time finding
photos I took with it clean enough to post on flickr, though there are
probably a bunch on facebook, it looks like I mostly just used the K100, or
my infra red camera and flash.

After March 2011, I started using the K-5 pretty much for everything, except
when  I need a backup or a second body.

 K20:

It's not really fair pitting the K20 at ISO 3200 versus the K-5 at ISO 8,000

Re: Rumor of a new intro Pentax Body

2012-05-21 Thread kwaller

My view is not that a higher MP image makes an image better. It's that
it has the potential to make it more versatile, and possibly better
based on the end use of the image.

My thoughts exactly, although for most amateur photogs, with a printed image
being the ultimate use of all those pixels and with 13 X 19 printers the
most reasonably priced large print makers, 16 to 24 MP is probably a
reasonable limit - I know it is for me although I've made very good images
that I've sold as prints, which were taken by the ist* D.

My son is starting his photographic career with a 4MP camera. I'm sorry
folks, it's nothing to do with MP, it's all to do with attitude and
results.

Cheers,
Cotty

I beg to differ with you in some respects. I'm probably parsing words
and what was unstated. :)

I agree that attitude and results trump all. I've captured great
images with a Fuji plastic-lens disposable and a .3MP Sony Mavica on
floppy disk.

My own personal motto is 'Composition trumps all'. A technically
perfectly exposed and rendered image is still distateful if the
composition does not inspire the viewer with some degree of excitement
or astethic appreciation (at least as far as my preferred genres go).
If the image doesn't start with a vision of what one is hoping to
achieve, it's unlikely it will match the photographer's aspirations.

So I agree with that sentiment, that MP is not the most important
consideration.

However, I'm sure you wouldn't argue that, with rare exception,
professionals in the field strive for the best image, and and usually
with the best possible tools at their disposal. My images captured on
a disposable camera, or on a 'lower' resolution sensor only go so far.
I can tell you I wish my 6MP *ist D images had been taken with a 14MP
K20D or K7, or higher.

It often depends on what the end use of the image is and the media on
which it's displayed, n'est pas? Web, small print, vs, portrait, vs.,
wall hanging.

Taking that into consideration, generally, the higher MP the better.
That's why larger film sizes were generally considered better than
smaller formats. Practicality, price, ease of shooting,
transportation, etc., tended to make 35mm the 'every man's'
compromise. Still, many aspired to move to a larger format.
Unfortunately for me, that happened within months of the first Pentax
DSLR.

My view is not that a higher MP image makes an image better. It's that
it has the potential to make it more versatile, and possibly better
based on the end use of the image.

The K-5/7 and the K-r were a bit retro, the *ist-D[x] and K*D and
K2000/Kx cameras were a bit plastic blob modern, the K30 looks 1950s odd
angles Alien with the K-5 grip grafted on. I hope they aren't going for

I've been critical of Pentax recently (say the last 3 years?) but this
is a great move. Why?

  - They get to reuse the 16MP Sony sensor which they've squeezed great
IQ out of for the K-5. It might also be a cheaper sensor now because
it's old technology.
  - An entry-level body for $700-800 is a good price given the current climate.
  - Weather Sealing! Awesome move at this price point.
  - 2 e-dials!!! Can't stress enough how much I like this in
any type of body (entry-level or professional).
  - 100% viewfinder. H...this seems strange, as I expected a
pentamirror VF given the smaller size of the hump. Maybe it's the
first pentamirror VF that doesn't look like a tunnel?

When I saw the VF coverage of 100% my first thought was EVF...the K30
is mirrorless!, but then PF says it's got 11 AF points, which would
mean it's an optical VF, and thus not mirrorless. But I wonder...

In any case, I think this camera is going to sell well to the crowd
who didn't want to splurge on a K-5, and to the other crowd who *did*
splurge on a K-5 and want a 2nd body. What I don't know is how many
K30's they'll sell at $800 if the K-5 is $999, so they either raise
the price of the K-5 back up to $1,200 again or lover the K30 price to
$700.

Anyone else feeling good about the K30?

on the camera that was not in his bag when he hit a low spot in the
highway filled with water and hydroplaned off the road, through a
barbed wire fence, and stopped when he hit a tree on the right front

(otherwise none the worse for wear) the Sigma 10-20mm was the only
casualty of the accident. Fortunately, being cautious by nature, he
*had* purchased the damage waiver.

Re: New Pentax DA 50mm f/1.8

2012-05-21 Thread Miserere
On 21 May 2012 11:15, Matthew Hunt m...@pobox.com wrote:

Matthew,

I didn't conclude anything, I simply pondered when I wrote so I
wonder if this means it won't work on their DSLR's...

Please find an instance where Pentax has referred to any of its DSLRs as ILCs.

DPReview uses ILC to refer to mirrorless cameras that have
interchangeable lenses (with maybe the exception of Leicas):

http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Guides/lens_buying_guide_01.htm

Scroll down to Lens Mounts.

Popular Photography does the same; for example:

http://www.popphoto.com/gear/2011/08/new-gear-sony-nex-7-stuffs-dslr-guts-interchangeable-lens-compact-body

Wikipedia says:

The Mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera (MILC) is a popular class
of digital system cameras. Unlike a compact digital camera, a MILC is
equipped with an interchangeable lens mount and unlike a digital
single-lens reflex camera, a MILC does not have a mirror-based optical
viewfinder. (source:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirrorless_interchangeable-lens_camera)

So although the C might stand for something different, ILC still
refers to a mirrorless camera (at least that's what most people
understand). Interestingly, AcronymGeek says ILC stands for
Interchangeable Lens Compact.:

http://www.acronymgeek.com/ILC/Interchangeable_Lens_Compact

From all this I would say that it's not just me who thinks that ILC is
a compact camera, and that DSLRs are not ILCs; so Matthew, given the
above, does it not seem reasonable to think that this lens might NOT
work on Pentax DSLRs?

So now, instead of attacking the man, can we address the issue of what
type of camera this new lens will work on?

 Cheers,

Re: New Pentax DA 50mm f/1.8

2012-05-21 Thread Matthew Hunt
On Mon, May 21, 2012 at 4:40 PM, Miserere miser...@gmail.com wrote:

You're arguing against yourself here. If ILCs are always mirrorless,
there wouldn't be a need for the term mirrorless ILC.

Pentax is, AFAIK, the only manufacturer with lenses that are
interchangeable between DSLRs and mirrorless bodies. So saying that
none of the other ILC systems include DSLRs doesn't prove much.

Interestingly, AcronymGeek says ILC stands for
 Interchangeable Lens Compact.:

I didn't dispute that some people use ILC to mean Interchangeable
Lens Compact. I was arguing against your claim that it doesn't mean
Interchangeable Lens Camera. Abbreviations can have multiple
meanings when used by different parties. You said Pentax was wrong to
use it to mean Interchangeable Lens Camera. I disagree, and found
Interchangeable Lens Camera to be widely used by a variety of
manufacturers.

So now, instead of attacking the man, can we address the issue of what
type of camera this new lens will work on?

Sure. Exactly what it says in the press release:

PENTAX RICOH IMAGING AMERICAS CORPORATION today announces the
introduction of its new smc PENTAX-DA 50mm f/1.8 medium-telephoto
autofocus lens, which is designed exclusively for use with the
company’s K-mount interchangeable-lens digital cameras.

Pentax DSLRs are K-mount interchangeable-lens digital cameras. So is the K-01.

Re: crummy eclipse photos

That's a, um, very rosy Sun, Larry. I think use of the Hue Corrector
(or whatever it's called) in Photoshop is in order. You'll have that
Sun looking nice n' yellow in no time.

Cheers,

bunch of pink crescents.  I played with the exposure and saturation a bit in
lightroom and you can sort of see the progress of the moon across the sun:

That sure is one heck of a tall built-in flash!

No top LCD. I'd miss that, but I wonder by how much?

Handgrip looks uncomfortable from the top.. and I'd sure like to see the back
of that camera!

(Does anyone know when it's going to be officially announced?)
