JL,
No, I have not been using the backup feature from Legacy since I've started
using Mozy. I used to put the backups each night onto a flash drive with the
date in the title. I probably should go back to doing that as well as Mozy just
to have extra protection.
Art,
Thanks for your suggestio
OK, I just figured it out. Mozy does let you choose a different file location.
I just created a new folder called Restored Files within the Legacy Data
folder. I left the file name the same since it was in a different folder.
Problem solved. Copied and pasted the notes with no problem. Thanks, J
I missed the obvious. Why do you have to go to Mozy for this? Do you
not use the backup feature in Legacy? It makes dated backups, named by
date. Are those on your computer somewhere or do you make them and then
immediately delete them? If you can find one dated the day before

Jennifer,
I would copy "My Ancestors" into another directory, change the name on of
"My Ancestors" to "Ancestors" and download the Mozy back-up and rename it
with a temp name make the repairs in "Ancestors" and rename it back to "My
Ancestors"

I use Mozy too but can't remember if you have a choice where to restore
a file to when you restore. If so that would work. If not, rename your
present file and move it temporarily while you make the changes from the
restored one. Just minor musical chairs.

I have a very strange problem. Somehow, my research and medical notes on a
particular individual disappeared. I know they were there about 2 hours ago
when I ran an individual report for this person b/c her cause of death from the
medical notes showed up on that report. I did backup my file last
I really appreciate your researching this more for me. At least now I
understand what's happening. Unfortunately, my web server belongs to a BIG
broadband company (my former employer). I don't know who I could even
contact about this, let alone expect any kind of response.
Thanks again.

When I use IE6 I see Unicode like you. But when I use Firefox 2 (my
normal browser) I see Windows-1252. So it appears Fire

No, they are all the same place. The location in German has the umlaut. I
just haven't updated other notations of it in other places in my database.
What really bothers me is that the encoding selection doesn't appear to be a
permanent setting that I can make in IE 8. I have Auto-select on but
Mary,
I have been looking at the William Brenzel page and I see that the 'u' in
Wurttemberg in the 'Born'line does have an umlaut whereas that in Wurtemberg
(sic) on the IMMIGRATION line does not.
I note that in the Source the latter does not have the umlaut either - are they

Thanks for your help Randolph. I'll try using Ancestor Colors as suggested.

Thank you, Dennis! When I checked the source via View -> Source, I see that
it is windows-1252. I changed the View -> Encoding to Auto-Select and now
it looks good.

That's where the color would go if you've applied ancestor colors. It
appears that you haven't.

Hi everyone.
I'm just coming to grips with Legacy (deluxe version)and just as I think
I've cracked it I find something else I need to know.
On Family View, next to the tag buttons, there is a small greyed out box.
When I hover the cursor over it, it says 'Not in current Ancestor Line'. I

Sure, go to http://home.roadrunner.com/~brenzel/940.html. The 'u' in

Now for the other question. Special characters such as bullets and letters
with accents are displaying incorrectly from my website. They appear
correctly when I look at the the HTML pages on my computer but wh
Yup, that's still true in V7, Dennis. I guess that since the links in the web
pages do not affect the creation of reports it was thought OK to transfer them
as is.
Having said that, as we both know Legacy doesn't always ignore what is between
the double chevrons in the reports!

Dennis and Ron,
Thanks for your suggestions. I'll give it a try. I have to sign off now
but I'll be back later. I know that I have another web question pertaining
to the display of certain characters, such as bullets and foreign letters
with accents (like an umlaut).

Mary,
You can include it in the index page created by Legacy either at the top of the
page or the end, using the Links tab in Create Web pages. This would put it on
*every* page, so probably only the end one would be of use.
Or near the top of the index page by including it in the box in the

I currently have pedigree style web pages stored on my ISP server. I link
to them from a "home page" on Geocities which recently announced that free
web hosting will be ending this summer. From my current home page, I also
link to a set of pedigree pages for an "unconnected people" database. The
