(313) HKI TURBO 4 we love Finland

2000-03-14 Thread Danny Wolfers
Last Saturday Legowelt, Orgue Electronique and DJ Serge had the honour
to play at the fourth Helsinki Turbo party
together with Opel Bastards. It was cold up north but the almost
utopian-like Finnish scene had made a great impression on the dutch
boys...Danny Blanco reports on a party were 900 people rocked Helsinki's
largest club, the Tavastia...

9.00 Already a small crowd is waiting before the closed doors. The
Tavastia club is still empty while we do
our last soundchecks. Opel Bastard Timo prepares the last disco
lighting effects. We witness the sight off a small rotating ball that
timidly emits a few colored lightrays into the fog of a smoke machine.
Timo, who is totally enchanted by his minimal lightplan, tells us that
this is Disco Heaven. And indeed it is,
no VJing, no expensive computer controlled laser lights, just 2 little
lights that will have the tremendous task to
visual entertain the crowd in the large club tonight. Brave.

10' o clock: the tavastia club is slowly being packed with the Finnish
party people. Local DJ's Ebony and Wilai
play some cool The Hague stylo electro combined with old obscure proto
technodisco songs.
The atmosphere is warm and the P.A. sound is just perfect...already
nothing can go wrong.

12.00
The first live act is the the hague electro-bass producer Brian Chinetti
AKA Orgue Electronique.
He proves once again that you can get a crowd of hundreds of people go
mad on minimal le-carish melodies and electro rhythms. Shrewd as
mr.Chinetti is,he kicks in the 4/4 somewhere in the middle of his last
track leaving the crowd even more mad and wild then they already are. A
well deserved warm applause is Chinetti's reward.

Hmm...i'll stop the chronological hour by hour flashback review on go on
in past tense...
After some more slique DJíng by the local DJ's it was time for the OPEL
BASTARDS!
I already had heard some nice things on their Sagaratius 12, but seeing
them live was unbelievable.
while Timo controlled a crappy old analog sequencer and the 808, the
other guys were playing and filtering
shattered old synthesizers. Funky basslines with beautifull synth-solo
melodies and vocals, mostly with silk
vocoders. A kind of Drexciya meets Jimi Tenor, but with a completely
fresh stylo of its own, I guess
it just the Finnish dolce vita.
A nice touch was when one of the Opel Bastards, dressed in a leather
jacket and sunglasses (it looked a lot cooler than it sounds, believe me
:) ), started doing a kind of funky hybrid dance-walking act, walking
down the entire stage while the other guys remained completely focused
on their machines, lighted by the brave lighting effects.
A pitty they only played 4 songs though.
After Opel Bastards, DJ Serge took control over the party. He played
some booty electro bass and slowly shifted to some 4 on the flour deep
chicago house to pave away the path for the next live act which was
Legowelt. I started with my track I always start with (well, they hadn't
heard it yet in Finland :) ). Things really started rocking when I threw
in my new latino-technodisco song. Conga's and cowbells just give the
extra edge.
After playing 5 songs that seemed to have made quite an impact on the
crowd (it was fun seeing people headbang on sturmvogel and actually
reacting on every new structural change in a track :) ) it was time for
DJ Serge again who was in the mood for some good electronic disco
classics.
Till the end, which was for dutch standards quite early, the crowd kept
on going.
Again we want to thank all the finish people (esp.the good care of Timo
Tommi) for one of the best
parties we had in a long time.

Schluss,
D.Blanco

I picked up the newest Pacou release Tresor #138 recently and find it to be
very similiar to Jeff Mills and Surgeon. I know they make the same type of

Sorry to bring this topic back up, but after reading about this situation

(313) recommendations...

2000-03-14 Thread Peter T. Bense
Hey guys ... just wanted to share my extreme pleasure with a few things I
received this past week...

Jesper Dahlbäck - Sand Vatten (on SVEK)

Dahlbäck aka The Persuader just seems UNSTOPPABLE! This is a 4 track 12
that incorporates more of the live instrumentation production techniques
that we heard on STOCKHOLM. Two tracks... Sand Vatten ... Dub versions
of each are also on the records. The music is supreme... the dub ones are
somewhat dancefloor friendly and have really interesting syncopation. File
under deep house

10/10.

G-Man [the album on i220]

I don't have time to say too much about this one other than that it really
sits well with me... two slabs of nice syncopation and really fresh
percussion sounds [I guess that makes this an album]. File under
tech-house/techno

9/10

Scuba - Where the Wild Things Are

Quite frankly I picked up this release for one track that I cannot seem to
get enough of Heaven being the one in question. It is INCREDIBLE. Heard
this one first on Derrick May's Mayday mix CD and have been trying to hunt
it down since. Smooth chords, warm vocal sample... combined with an
interlude of a woman talking about fantasies [in Spanish]... really really
really beautiful and uplifting yet dancefloor oriented.

10/10 for that track... the rest of the 12 I don't really like... overall
6.5/10.. but I'd recommend picking it up for just that cut.

UK Gold Soulless EP - PRIMEEVIL 018

3 tracks here... no real info was given on the promo sheet about who these
guys are but there are 2 really phat phat tracks on here. A1 is Agent
Wood and AA1 Confined are the ones to focus on. 130+ BPM tracks with a
really solid kick to them and heavy basslines combined with vocal snippets
that say things like oooh... yeah... makes you feel good [there's both a
male voice and a female voice, sort of alternating between the measures
sprinkled with this sample and it sounds really nice].

9/10

... thats all for this week!

(313) What a difference a day makes! Australia here I come - CONFIRMED!

2000-03-14 Thread JovanBlade
Greetings Cats!

1st - THE TP IN AUSTRALIA DJ TOUR (MAY 2000) HAS BEEN CONFIRMED!!!
Boy what a difference a day makes. The promoters and I have resolved all
pending issues and the tour is now 100% confirmed! I am so excited about this
because it will be my very first trip to the beautiful land down under. I
received so many wonderfully kind e-mails from fans in Australia regarding
this tour, and I am happy to let you all know that it is ON LIKE POPCORN now
baby! There are some tour dates which might change, but I will keep you
updated as these changes occur. My only regret is disappointing the promoters
who wanted to book me for parties here in Detroit, and elsewhere in America
and Europe based upon the cancellation of the tour. I have spoken to all
persons involved, and I have been assured that all is good among us!

:-)

2nd - I want to thank everyone who braved the ice and 6 inches of snow to
come out to CHARMED this past Saturday in Cleveland. I really want to thank
Casey Grim and everyone with Delicious Productions for their super cool
hospitality. I also have to thank my friends Heather, Julia, and Sarah (all
from Cleveland), Craig, Rebecca Sasha who drove all the way from
Pittsburgh, and Akron's ever sweet Ms.Tami Hanna Co. for coming out in such
terrible weather to see this cat from Detroit spin some HOUSE MUSIC! Much
love and respect to all of you!

3rd - I want to thank everyone who came out to support my record release
party at the Velvet Lounge last night. Your support was overwhelming, and I
want each of you to know that I absolutely appreciate the love! For those of
you who were not there,
I gave away 50 copies of I Wanna FFU b/w Love's Got Me High on limited
edition WHITE Vinyl. I also gave away 100 copies of the limited edition TP
LIVE FROM THE MELODIES MEMORIES DANCE ZONE GRAND OPENING PARTY CD! I have
to give props to Steve Crawford who sent the house roaring last night along
with DJ Don Q who cut's the music with so much class . . . . . well . . . .
What else can I say Detroit playas like DJ Ray Bone, DJ Disco D, The
Mole, DJ Jeff Woodward, and Brian Sandwiches Gilespie were among the elite
members in attendance. And for those of you wondering about the lovely and
charming ladies in the back room, they were recruiting volunteers to help
with the upcoming Detroit Electronic Dance Music Festival which is chaired by
Mr. Planet E himself - Carl Craig. By the end of the night they had signed
over 80 volunteers to assist with this event! Great job ladies!

I Wanna FFU b/w Love's Got Me High will officially be available this
coming Wednesday, March 15th 2000. For those here in the Detroit area, you
can get your copy today at RecordTime (810-775-1550) or Melodies Memories
(810-774-8480).
If you are a buyer and want this record in your store, right now your best
bet is to contact WATTS MUSIC (516-596-9771), or RENEGADE RHYTHMS
(503-973-1806).

4th - I will now be spinning 4 events during this years Winter Music
Conference in Miami. In addition to spinning at the O Bar with my Detroit
homie DJ Disco D on Tuesday night (March 28th), I'll also be spinning earlier
that afternoon at the Green Galactic Sweet Suite Party within the Radisson
Hotel (site for the WMC this year).
I do not have my set times yet for any of these events, but as stated before,
I will update you once I have this info.

FYI: I have been swamped with requests to attend the Boat/Yacht Party on
Monday, March 27th. To all those who've inquired about this fabulous event, I
should have more details regarding space availability and other relevant
details soon. To my friend from Hamburg Germany, I cannot confirm the rumor
about any naked girls sailing on this boat!

Finally - Look out for the SPECIAL TP FAN CLUB RECORD/CD Giveaway coming soon
(for TP Fan List members only). Also coming soon, CLASSIC TP MIX CD Vol. # 9
(THE WINTER MUSIC CONFERENCE EDITION).

peace respect, (I love y'all for real)

  E-Type is the name of a horrible, long-haired euro-dance

assume that 'E-Type Mix' means that he did the remix.

I wondered about the same thing, but the eurodance E-Type is from
Sweden, whereas this E-Type is/are from Germany. And like urban fox

Again, if someone is actually doing this, please drag them out in to the
street and beat on them. PURCHASING these records is not the way to tell
Sony/BMG that they have done a horrible deed. Once you have bought these
records, it doesn't matter whether you listen to them, burn them , or

*Sorry to continue this thread...but n8 is obviously quite worked up. What
say we not beat anyone down?

It was not my intention to advocate purchasing the offending record as a
means of clearing it from store shelves.

It has however been done.

That the record in question was purchased in bulk, by a single shopper at
one NY store, is a fact.

For whatever reason the record seems not to have been restocked - this is a
good thing IMHO. Am I allowed to be pleased by Jaguar's absence from my
line of sight while shopping? I think so.

Am I happy that the record is not on the shelves where naive youngsters
might get their hands on it?:) Yup. Just be grateful I've not mentioned
who is rumored to have done the purchasing. I refuse to pass along
ridiculous speculation.

The injustice of the UR v sony/bmg drama pisses me off as much as anyone,
if not more. Excuse me for bringing a little levity to an otherwise grim
situation.

(313) Re: Back to Back- retro classics on Network

2000-03-14 Thread stephen

speaking of re-issues, I picked a gem up the other day.
it's called Back to Back- retro classics on Network records (NTW #3)
It has I Wanna Go Higher from our own TP, Liberty City's Some Lovin
and two songs I cannot stop playing: Marc Kinchen's Somebody New
and Derrick Carter, Mark Farina andChris Nazuka's classic, original,
mental mix of Mood as Symbols and Instruments. Great Stuff

There was also a purple one(mine's green), same label; with Saunderson's
 funky, funk, funk
And two Derrick May tunes, nude photo being one of them. I already
have these so I didn't bother

are there more of these out there? Are they somewhat rare?
it does say strictly limited edition.

It probably is a rare find.
I have #8 with MK - somebody new and Forgemasters - A track with no name on
the flip.
My friend has Strings of Life with Rock to the Beat on the flip, Silver,
white or clear vynil, forget which number.
There was a Network discography somewhere on the net but cant seem to track
it down.

take it easy,
stephen.

You might like Technicians Of The Underground Vortex Vehicle, by James

I have it on there's no way out (of this groove) LP - Techno City Records/
Paragon.
Its a really funny industrial/ ecelctro track with strange vocals and FX, sounds
like a 626 and a 808. I especially love the cheesy orchestra stabs.

Re: (313) essit musique

2000-03-14 Thread Klaas-Jan Jongsma

Yes, all the records on Shiver including Essit musique
(eindhoven has something with the word musique: Eevolute
Muzique)are made by Erik van der Broek.
my favorite shiver tracks: 'Yore Signal Box' and the
magnificent 'Subsonic Soundscape'.

actualy Essit musique was on Dap (which Shiver is a sub of,or
maybe
the other way round) and dap did have lots of rekids by other
artists
(dmx crew,Karo,dj ZkyDaniel p etc),all the 4 shiver ones were
by E
VDB, from the dap stuff he did 1,2,3?,5,817,b4 he had a label
called 7th sense which is simply unreal very oldscool detroit
sort
of sound, then you have the 3 rekids on Freaky as platform2,a
dutch
friend once told me that there were alot more then 3 but they
were
uncredited or went under diffrent names,i found one that had an
italian
sort of name on it once .but the initals were still EVDB(enrco
deBarrio
or something to that effect),i couldn't decide if it was him or
not and
decided not to buy this as i did not like it that much, can
anyone
add some more about this?

Attempt number 2:
Indeed not all the DAP records are from Erik, some of the
records are really boring. Every Shiver track on the otherhand
are worth tracking down. Passeti mailed a discography of al
shiver/dap/evdb releases on the [low]-list some time ago, here
it is:

Also rockin the world is a couple of Fiebar records I bought, one
called Versatile Virus and t'other Cubre Libre. Apparently the Cubre
Libre is Hawtin's handywork and has a nice swing and a bit o latin

I question how you'd be literate enough to get yourself onto an email

haphazardly, there was few consistent grooves and none of what I love
most about his sets- keeping certain sounds constant while subtely
dropping out and bringing in new ones. It had none of the intensity
and intricacy I was expecting. And the Twilo vibe was as sketchy as
it's ever been, the crowd was just awful, and for some reason the
room was brighter than I've ever seen it. What went so wrong on

Happy to report the BMG/Sony release seems to have disappeared from the
stores here in NY...I've heard tell there was someone buying them all up,
presumably to burn them. Whomever he/she is...Thank You!!

Wouldn't it be better to go into the store, get a bunch of the BMG/Sony
versions, take them to a personal listening station and then scratch them up
with a pin when shopkeeper isn't looking and then place them back in the
racks...

Re: (313) Jeff Mills at Twilo

2000-03-14 Thread James Bucknell

i was at twilo on friday for jeff mills. it was my first time hearing mills
spin, so i can't comment on how he compared to other times. but i wasn't blown
away, and he didn't come up to the hype ( but hype's about hyperbole, and not
reality).
i felt he had stretches of being simply good, interspersed with moments of sheer
frenzied brilliance. at the end of his set he stopped the music, and after a
moment of silence let 'strings of life' come in. it was fantastic hearing the
track on the twilo sound system. and the old school heads clearly stood out in
the crowd by their screaming.
i didn't expect too much because he was playing at twilo. we turned up at 3.30
to avoid the enormous line. the club was too packed for dancing, with most
people standing around on the dance floor.
for the majority of the twilo night friday crowd sasha and digweed are at the
limits of their musical tastes, so a pumelling from jeff mills left them a
little dumfounded as to when they were meant to wave their hands in the air.

everybody sounds like crap at twilo--it's commerical clubbing, their is never
any vibe, and the sound system is so domineering that it makes all the djs end
up sounding the same. richie hawtin on a sunday night, and laurent garnier about
three years ago are the only decent sets i've heard.

that being said, the upstairs lounge at twilo on a wednesday is another matter
altogether. elliot taub(aka ulysses) brought out rolando a month or two back,
and it was a blinder of a night. and he's booked claude young for later this
month.

(313) Matador tentative release schedule as of 03.13.00

2000-03-14 Thread p i e t r o

Some information just in, direct from Matador. I'm
sure that many of you will crave to hear these in the
upcoming months!! New stuff by Pole, Jega, BoC,
Modernist, amongst others..;)

Matador Records :: www.matador.recs.com ::

note firm BELLE SEBASTIAN RELEASE DATE-JUNE 6!!

*OUT NOW*
YO LA TENGO And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
Yo La Tengo have bucked their own trends yet again with a
startlingly intimate epic. While its aggressive modesty may
seem offputting at first, it reveals itself to be one of the
most powerful, moving, and mature records by any band in
years.

MARY TIMONY Mountains
At times augmenting her bizarre guitar work with piano,
harpsichord, and viola, former Helium frontwoman Timony gives
her expansive surreal musings a surprisingly stark musical
forum. Far more imaginative and affecting than the Tori Amos
types she's apt to be compared to.

BELLE AND SEBASTIAN Lazy Line Painter Jane (3-CDEP box set)
FINALLY, the box set of their three previously-import-only CD
EPs: Dog On Wheels, Lazy Line Painter Jane, and 3…6…9
Seconds Of Light. Taken together, could be the best BS
record yet. Remarkable stuff. You can't have a copy, but
hey, you can expense it.

NON PHIXION Black Helicopters 12-inch
New York's most intense and anarchic hip hop group address
government conspiracy and epidemic paranoia on the new 12.
They're smart, scary, and they can rhyme, like, really fast.

CONSOLE 14 Zero Zero 12-inch
A love song from a computer to…to its programmer?
Humanity?! SOOO millennial, dude. It also might be the
catchiest song we've ever released (so it rips off Blue
Monday…)

* M A R C H *
21 CAT POWER The Covers Record
Accompanying herself on only sparse piano and guitar, Chan
Marshall has taken songs by Michael Hurley, Dylan, the
Stones, Moby Grape, Nina Simone, and more (including herself)
and made one of the most unique covers records ever. Almost
gruesome in its melancholy (think Drama Of Exile, Pink
Moon, Music For A New Society) she de/reconstructs these
songs to the point of unrecognizability, producing a wondrous
work full of her own extraordinary personality.

21 CONSOLE Rocket in The Pocket
You're going to know all about Console thanks to the Gap-ad
friendly electro-pop hit 14 Zero Zero (see above). The
album, however, is another beast altogether, a set of warm,
playful ambient electro a la Boards Of Canada, though with a
latent pop sensibility. Console is essentially Martin
Gretschmann, keyboard player for hugely-underrated German
band the Notwist, and the king of my world.

21 QUICKSPACE The Death Of Quickspace
London's Quickspace take an improvisational approach to their
hypnotic but diverse sound, creating a mood groove like no
rock band we've heard in years. Li'l Eric Demby says I
don't listen to music with guitars anymore, except
Quickspace. This is a band we've wanted to work with since
their inception; Death is their 3rd US release, but the 1st
to be released simultaneously here overseas.

*A P R I L*
4 THE WISDOM OF HARRY Coney Island of Your Mind 7
Pete Astor gets all Primal Scream on us with a linear,
hypnotic pop-dance groove. Look for the followup to last
year's Stars Of Super 8 comp this fall.

18 MR. LEN What The Fuck 12-inch
One of the masterminds behind Company Flow, turning a
complete 180 on his 2nd Matador 12 with a particularly jiggy
number.

18 NIGHTMARES ON WAX featuring DE LA SOUL The Sound of
N.O.W. EP
DJ Food, Rae Christian, Paul Nice, and others revisiting
the chill-out mastery of the recent Carboot Soul album.

18 THE MODERNIST Explosion
WOW-Elegant techno-haus from Cologne wizard Jorg Burger (of
Burger/Ink, The Bionaut, B Movement, and more). Minimalism
gone super-expansive. His finest work yet.

*J U N E*
6 BELLE AND SEBASTIAN Fold Your Hands Child You Walk Like
A Peasant
The first album of new Belle Sebastian material in almost
two years, this is apt to be the best pop album of the year.

6 LIVE HUMAN Elefish Jellyphant
SF's remarkable Live Human disintegrate all barriers between
improvised jazz, underground hip-hop and experimental rock;
it's a completely fresh spin on instrumental music.

20 POLE 3
Another installment in the brilliant recording career of
German vinyl-cutter Stefan Betke, whose records are among the
most acclaimed electronic releases of recent years. With dub
bass, random noise, and no percussion, Betke crafts gorgeous
soundscapes that are as fleshy as they are cerebral.

20 JEGA Geometry
This followup to 1998's Spectrum (released on Matador last
year) is another wild conglomeration of styles, drum 'n' bass
to jazz to ambient to jungle to funk to hardcore…and back.
Comparisons to fellow sonic extremists might happen if Dylan
Nathan (aka Jega) stopped long enough to invite them.

*C O M I N G S O O N*
new albums by CORNELIUS, BOARDS OF CANADA, NON PHIXION, and
MORE!!

Pietro.

i just (belatedly) picked up this kooky scientist LP on telepathic/plus 8
from '97 i believe. it's fucking amazing! really funky, twisted dancefloor
stuff with the odd experimental bit and an overall sort of tech-housey feel.
i can't stop playing it, loud, even when i'm getting ready for work in the

i know fred giannelli occasionally posts to this list. could he or anyone

And notice how in the runout groove AX-021 is scratched out and replaced
by the Music Man cat. no. :)

Some recent additions to my crate:

Shake's EP on Sublime. 'Get A Feeling' has an old school house feel to
it without sounding derivative. The flipside 'Sermon' is a pretty
straightforward groover, but with lots of quirky sounds going on. This
one's growing on me.

The Shawn Rudiman EP 'Evidence of Life' on 7th City. I'd like to
interpret this as evidence of life of techno, i.e. that techno does not
necessarily have to be thundering 'tsss-tsss-tsss' stylee to do serious
dancefloor damage. Solid stuff, somewhat reminiscent of Stephen Brown's
work on Djax.

And more on the 212/312 tip: the Passages EP by Tony Watson (who he?)
on Ibadan. It's one-sided (...) but it can go the full ten rounds with
the best of Guidance and Prescription. Deep and hypnotic.
