The manual is scary as hell, but once you watch the thing in action it's something else. Up till now I've used outboard stuff sequenced with an MMT8 a-la-old-school, but I can't wait to get Logic and Reaktor in my Powerbook and try to get the funk a flowin'. If I'm not mistaken, this is the new permutation of the old Cubase vs. Cakewalk argument. I use Cubase and I'm 95% happy with the sequencing abilities it offers. If you ask me, the small manual is a huge drawback. My biggest knock against Steinberg is lack of support in terms of manuals and unanswered emails. Additionally, Cubase doesn't offer a whole lot in the way of precise audio editing functions. As I've used Cubase more to records my original material, beef it up with effects and mix it down I've wanted to do more with the samples. The friendlier solution I've come across from my discussion with Kent Williams (Chaircrusher) is to run Sound Forge for sample editing, then import the wave files back into Cubase or just arrange in Sound Forge. As I understand it Recycle is comparable. Pro Tools is supposed to be the best. However, people were talking about Pro Tools earlier as though it sequenced, and I believe their sequencing product designed to work with Pro Tools is Studio Vision. Both cost an arm and a leg though. All told, for my dollar I am happy with Cubase, but I'm looking for an advanced audio editor. Another thing to consider is to stop by the Cubase and Logic user groups. Both will provide hours worth of horror stories. The fact remains, there is no perfect product still. I can only recommend doing A LOT of research and trying them out if you get the chance. An aside: __ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com

That is, for a DJ to really produce art you need two (or more) turntables, RECORDS, and a mixer. But there's a slippery slope here. Plus, I'm getting a new soundcard to run all the .wav files to seperate channels on my Mackie. So far I'm really turned off by what i hear about logic, beacaue all I really want to do is throw my synth lines over the .wav that I'm currently working with in Acid, instead of having to sample them and drop them into the program. Chloe, This is my first post to one of the best lists I have been on for a while! I'm from Sydney Aust, and this weekend is the DETROIT ALLSTARS featuring Carl Craig and Claude Young plus a host of Sydney talent. I'll let you know the verdict... Yeah it's a great list and that party should be sweet! Not only Carl Craig and cohorts playing live as PaperClip People but Biftek live too and then Claude Young DJ'ing with a host of good local DJ's to.. I can't wait to hear Patrick HAF V's James Bond as well. When Juan Atkins played the same venue over Easter.. Patrick and James Bond had some damn nice music going down... Kraftwerk, Dopplereffekt, Donna Summer and some DJ Assault to name but a few of artists tunes I recognised and never thought i'd get to hear let alone dance to on a big sound system at a nightclub. Should be a good night.. see you there!! Cheers, John Aural Industries Pty Ltd http://www.aural-industries.com.au

We talk about records here...we talk about gear elsewhere
hello, I would like to comment about the current off topic-ness of a lot of the 313 posts lately. Gear is cool, and it definitely was an obsession of mine for a few years, but it is off-topic on this list. If you feel the overwhelming need to talk about Roland or Sonic Foundry, that is cool, but you should do it on other lists. I know that I am not the only person on this list that has paid dues in AH, DH, RMMS, RMMM, Synthzone, Sonicstate, Harmony Central...and when I want gear information, I will go to those sources. When I want to hear about what is going on in Detroit these days, or want to know about an obscure pre-UR Mike Banks record or details about what Damon Booker did after retroactive records, that's when I come to 313. I do not mean to be a jerk about it, but it is better discussed elsewhere among more knowledgeable people who are interested in the subject. One of you guys should go to eGroups.com and start a detroit techno gear list, or something to that extent. It will take 5 minutes, and it will save a lot of OT traffic on this list. If somebody would make the list, I would join, personally. It's something to think about... take care, mt
Re: [313] We talk about records here...313 gear mailing list.
Hello, I took my own advice, and started a gear mailing list dedicated to Detroit related electronic music. IF you would be interested in joining, click on this link: http://www.egroups.com/group/tech-gear It is fun, it is easy, and if you want to talk about Rich Hawtin with a devilfish 303, or Dan Bell running up and down Gratiot Ave. with a fully loaded RZ-1, you can do that cuz it will be 100% on topic. If you want to talk about Lawrence Burden sweating behind a W-30 during a Octave One live set, you can do that too, it is all good. On what other list can you learn fun facts like the main board played during the Tikiman/CR DEMF set was a Prophet 5. You feel me dog??? mt Intermodal wrote: hello, I would like to comment about the current off topic-ness of a lot of the 313 posts lately. Re: [313] software and Recycle
Even though I dont like Cubase VST I would like to point out that Cubase VST does support REX files so you can edit your audio AIFF or WAV files in Recycle and import them as REX files. The cool thing is audio loops saved as REX files will atomaticaly sync with Cubase. The bigest problem I have with software sequencers like Cubase VST is you get timming inacuracies when overdubing audio from a sound card. Digi 001 with ProTools LE may be a better option if you have a G4 Mac although you can only use audio suite and no outsider plug ins.

As for PC's and mixing tunes tough, obviously computers can be used to some extent, as many of the so called DJ mixes that you buy on CD these days are actually done on computers, without vinyl ever coming into the equation. Before I get slated, this isent the case with any of the CD's people on this list would buy, but if you were to go out and buy the latest Jeremy Healy - Ibiza 2000 mix CD, or perhaps Eurotrance 2000 in the mix, etc, etc, odds are it was done by some guy in a studio, on a computer, with not a deck in sight. It might not be the proper way of doing things, but you cant deny that it happens alot and is only getting more popular. Truth be told though, while it might be cool and all, I would still feel a bit blasphemous doing it all on a computer. I mean, no decks? Its just not right, know what I mean? However, the streaming of mp3 is certainly interesting. Problem is, streaming or no, an entire DJ set, and I'm talking about real ones here by the way, not MP3 tracks mixed on a computer, is still way to big in terms of file size when you use MP3. With Real audio, I reckon what you lose in quality you gain in the fact that the file size is actually reasonable. I suppose what I really need is a cable connection or something, and then it would be irrelevant... Aaron

re:(OT) Software question (revised and updated)
'lo all, I recently switched from using opcode studio vision pro (the red-headed step child of sequencing software,) to Digital performer 2.7. I would take a serious look at performer (http://www.motu.com.) It has a very nice interface, very advanced midi functionality, loads of plugins (plus plugins that allow vst compatability,) rewire support, and very advanced digital audio support. My fav feature so far (i've only had it for four days,) is the visual wave stretching feature. If you need to stretch out a wave, no more menus, just click drag- very nice. FWIW, i spent about 4 or 5 months researching which one i was gonna buy. just my 313 cents, out jim
Re: [313] (OT) Software question (revised and updated)
what i tried to say was: he can do midi sequencing in cubase, but afterwards he will have to sample the lines to wav and put them into cubase or acid or what ever.. basically use cubase as a midi sequencer. i think another cool thing about cubase is that you can rewire rebirth directly into cubase... (the thing about acid being a toy was all about it working with audio loops, which is not exactly my cup of tea) christian bloch On Fri, 9 Jun 2000, pooper scooper wrote: Bloch, He is trying to have midi sequences on seperate tracks along side wav filesHe could do what you're saying cubase does in ACID(which is not a toy---it's an audio program for making music...) I've got the Lifelike EP on Music Man and I've seen the Axis version in the record shop. The tracks are exactly the same on both releases. More pictures please! More!!
I have been off the list until I came back from Chicago and started working again (Monday). I was wondering what I have missed? Probably lots of comments on the festival. I was also wondering if more people have put pictures online or are planning to do so? I'll probably have mine by Tuesday. It will take me a couple of days to get some of them scanned because I don't have much time in the evening and I'm afraid I have a new deadline coming pretty soon (feat. a Detroitspecial). I'll try to scan as many as possible as quickly as possible and then I'll mail them to Hans Veneman (Technotourist.org) to put on his site since I don't have one myself. (If that's ok with you Hans??) Question remains: are there more pictures? Who wants to start mailing them to interested listmembers? John, technotourist Belgium

Fwd: [313] tech-house
Last night I popped in one of my favorite trance CD (I know) Psychcotrance I. When it was released it was considered trance at the time. Now, I think it would be considered more tech-house. It certainly doesn't have that cheesy sawtooth synth sound playing nursery school chord progressions. In fact it reminds me of Franky Bones' hosue loops last release which I consider archetypal tech-house. Any thoughts. Thanks for filling me in guys. I had doubts from the beginning but gave EMP and Zorak's Jamboree some consideration because Kevin and Juan were billed as live. Perhaps we'll make the trip out to Montreal for Mutek instead and save our journey into Detroit for a more suitable soiree. lil' robbie - good to hear from you! thanks for coming out to Focus, I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. ditto on the security, they were hotheads especially during our first few weeks (they didn't quite understand that our patrons were not like the usual drunken clientele). as for future Halcyon events - we're working on something special, perhaps an intimate free outdoor gathering spanning the usual techno-techhouse-house sounds. i'll keep you informed Peace... new richie hawtin discography
Given all the fertile discussion re: Hawtin lately, I thought I'd take a moment for a shameless plug of the exhaustive Hawtin discography I just launced at www.plastikfan.org. The discog on the m-nus site is pretty good, but it lists only tracks, not where to find them. Plus, it leaves off a lot of stuff, and not just embarrassing stuff. The Lords of Acid remixes are listed, but not the Slam and DBX ones. I have therefore compiled as exhaustive a discography as I could from my own collection. There are three separate pages: artists, tracks and releases, all of which is cross-linked. What I'm looking for, other than to share this with others, is to make it more of a collaborative effort with others - filling in gaps, pointing out errors, etc. Brian Dillard [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If anyone could recommend some good dark, moody techno -I like hard stuff but also really subtle hypnotic stuff that would be great -on the offchance that any of you have an interest in old jungle/hardcore, feel free to e-mail me privately for any knowledge regards Liam Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
