Just confirming a long held suspicion
Minimal Nation was never released on CD, was it?
Rob Hood is one of the very few producers out there
who has such a good full-length that never got a CD issue.
Anybody know if Minimal Nation has a CD release slotted?

Matt

It was released on CD. I bought a copy when I was in Scotland when
it was originally released .

I was on the verge of buying Cubase when I was shown the light that is
LOGIC. The manual is scary as hell, but once you watch the thing in action
it's something else. Up till now I've used outboard stuff sequenced with an
MMT8 a-la-old-school, but I can't wait to get Logic and Reaktor in my
Powerbook and try to get the funk a flowin'.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the new permutation of the old Cubase vs.
Cakewalk argument. I use Cubase and I'm 95% happy with the sequencing
abilities it offers. If you ask me, the small manual is a huge drawback. My
biggest knock against Steinberg is lack of support in terms of manuals and
unanswered emails. Additionally, Cubase doesn't offer a whole lot in the way
of precise audio editing functions. As I've used Cubase more to records my
original material, beef it up with effects and mix it down I've wanted to do
more with the samples. The friendlier solution I've come across from my
discussion with Kent Williams (Chaircrusher) is to run Sound Forge for
sample editing, then import the wave files back into Cubase or just arrange
in Sound Forge. As I understand it Recycle is comparable. Pro Tools is
supposed to be the best. However, people were talking about Pro Tools
earlier as though it sequenced, and I believe their sequencing product
designed to work with Pro Tools is Studio Vision. Both cost an arm and a leg
though. All told, for my dollar I am happy with Cubase, but I'm looking for
an advanced audio editor.

Another thing to consider is to stop by the Cubase and Logic user groups.
Both will provide hours worth of horror stories. The fact remains, there is
no perfect product still. I can only recommend doing A LOT of research and
trying them out if you get the chance.

This sounds a bit like the Marsalis/Crouch argument that to produce real
music, you have to use real acoustic instruments.any music produced
electronically is inauthentic, unartistic, and inhuman.

That is, for a DJ to really produce art you need two (or more)
turntables, RECORDS, and a mixer.

But there's a slippery slope here. Hell, back in the day I thought that
anything that would modify the pitch FOR you was a cop out. USE YOUR F'ING
HANDS!!! Part of the art was figuring out how to blend No Way Back with
Nude Photoand I wasn't with some machine that would figure out how to
do it FOR me..

But with the CD Mixer this seems to have changed.

Which brings up the questionwhat's the difference between a cd mixer
and a program that does the same task?

Chloe,

This is my first post to one of the best lists I have been on for a while!

I'm from Sydney Aust, and this weekend is the DETROIT ALLSTARS featuring
Carl Craig and Claude Young plus a host of Sydney talent.

I'll let you know the verdict...

Yeah it's a great list and that party should be sweet! Not only Carl Craig
and cohorts playing live as PaperClip People but Biftek live too and then
Claude Young DJ'ing with a host of good local DJ's to.. I can't wait to
hear Patrick HAF V's James Bond as well.

When Juan Atkins played the same venue over Easter.. Patrick and James Bond
had some damn nice music going down... Kraftwerk, Dopplereffekt, Donna
Summer and some DJ Assault to name but a few of artists tunes I recognised
and never thought i'd get to hear let alone dance to on a big sound system
at a nightclub.

Should be a good night.. see you there!!

don't know what i'll be wearing yet so if anyone wants to hook-up for a

should organise something a little better. The Detroiters + the Dutchmen +
other 313 list members always manage to do it so well when something big
happens in Detroit, so let's show the 313 list Sydney can do it just as
well.. hell knows the lineup is INCREDIBLE, so we'll at least have

We talk about records here...we talk about gear elsewhere

2000-06-09 Thread Intermodal
hello,

I would like to comment about the current off topic-ness of a lot of the
313 posts lately. Gear is cool, and it definitely was an obsession of
mine for a few years, but it is off-topic on this list. If you feel the
overwhelming need to talk about Roland or Sonic Foundry, that is cool,
but you should do it on other lists. I know that I am not the only
person on this list that has paid dues in AH, DH, RMMS, RMMM, Synthzone,
Sonicstate, Harmony Central...and when I want gear information, I will
go to those sources. When I want to hear about what is going on in
Detroit these days, or want to know about an obscure pre-UR Mike Banks
record or details about what Damon Booker did after retroactive records,
that's when I come to 313.

I do not mean to be a jerk about it, but it is better discussed
elsewhere among more knowledgeable people who are interested in the
subject. One of you guys should go to eGroups.com and start a detroit
techno gear list, or something to that extent. It will take 5 minutes,
and it will save a lot of OT traffic on this list. If somebody would
make the list, I would join, personally. It's something to think

I took my own advice, and started a gear mailing list dedicated to
Detroit related electronic music. IF you would be interested in joining,
click on this link:

It is fun, it is easy, and if you want to talk about Rich Hawtin with a
devilfish 303, or Dan Bell running up and down Gratiot Ave. with a fully
loaded RZ-1, you can do that cuz it will be 100% on topic. If you want
to talk about Lawrence Burden sweating behind a W-30 during a Octave One
live set, you can do that too, it is all good. On what other list can
you learn fun facts like the main board played during the Tikiman/CR
DEMF set was a Prophet 5. You feel me dog???

Even though I dont like Cubase VST I would like to point out that Cubase
VST does support REX files so you can edit your audio AIFF or WAV files
in Recycle and import them as REX files.
The cool thing is audio loops saved as REX files will atomaticaly sync
with Cubase.
The bigest problem I have with software sequencers like Cubase VST is
you get timming inacuracies when overdubing audio from a sound card.
Digi 001 with ProTools LE may be a better option if you have a G4 Mac
although you can only use audio suite and no outsider plug ins.

hehe, mixman is a crap toy at that, it isent even any fun (in my opinion
anyway), which is what toys should be. As for PC's and mixing tunes tough,
obviously computers can be used to some extent, as many of the so called DJ
mixes that you buy on CD these days are actually done on computers, without
vinyl ever coming into the equation. Before I get slated, this isent the
case with any of the CD's people on this list would buy, but if you were to
go out and buy the latest Jeremy Healy - Ibiza 2000 mix CD, or perhaps
Eurotrance 2000 in the mix, etc, etc, odds are it was done by some guy in a
studio, on a computer, with not a deck in sight. It might not be the
proper way of doing things, but you cant deny that it happens alot and is
only getting more popular. As I said, I have a program that claims to mix
MP3's in a similar fasion to a CD mixer. If only I had another sound card so
I could try it out!

the streaming of mp3 is certainly interesting. Problem is, streaming or no,
an entire DJ set, and I'm talking about real ones here by the way, not MP3

you use MP3. With Real audio, I reckon what you lose in quality you gain in
the fact that the file size is actually reasonable. I suppose what I really

funny toys too, but that's what they are (and i've even got 2 sound

there are many advantages to mp3s (get your music spread without having to

is toys ;) go ahead and enjoy yourself with all the mp3 players, just
don't expect them to ever replace the technics. AND good technology is
good, bad technology is bad ;) for instance, it is bad that DATs never

He is trying to have midi sequences on seperate tracks along side wav

become wav, or another signal- not MIDI. So, why should he get cubase to do
what he already does.

Or can he take the audio loops he creates in sonic foundry and throw them up

re:(OT) Software question (revised and updated)

2000-06-09 Thread The Deliverator
'lo all,

I recently switched from using opcode studio vision pro (the red-headed step
child of sequencing software,) to Digital performer 2.7. I would take a
serious look at performer (http://www.motu.com.) It has a very nice interface,
very advanced midi functionality, loads of plugins (plus plugins that allow vst
compatability,) rewire support, and very advanced digital audio support. My
fav feature so far (i've only had it for four days,) is the visual wave
stretching feature. If you need to stretch out a wave, no more menus, just
click drag- very nice. FWIW, i spent about 4 or 5 months researching which
one i was gonna buy.

just my 313 cents,

out

jim

what i tried to say was: he can do midi sequencing in cubase, but
afterwards he will have to sample the lines to wav and put them into
cubase or acid or what ever.. basically use cubase as a midi sequencer. i
think another cool thing about cubase is that you can rewire rebirth
directly into cubase... (the thing about acid being a toy was all about it
working with audio loops, which is not exactly my cup of tea)

I have been off the list until I came back from Chicago and started working
again (Monday). I was wondering what I have missed? Probably lots of
comments on the festival. I was also wondering if more people have put
pictures online or are planning to do so?

I'll probably have mine by Tuesday. It will take me a couple of days to get
some of them scanned because I don't have much time in the evening and I'm
afraid I have a new deadline coming pretty soon (feat. a Detroitspecial).
I'll try to scan as many as possible as quickly as possible and then I'll
mail them to Hans Veneman (Technotourist.org) to put on his site since I
don't have one myself. (If that's ok with you Hans??)

Question remains: are there more pictures? Who wants to start mailing them
to interested listmembers?

Fwd: [313] tech-house

2000-06-09 Thread Mrwest99
Last night I popped in one of my favorite trance CD (I know) Psychcotrance I.
When it was released it was considered trance at the time. Now, I think it
would be considered more tech-house. It certainly doesn't have that cheesy
sawtooth synth sound playing nursery school chord progressions. In fact it
reminds me of Franky Bones' hosue loops last release which I consider
archetypal tech-house. Any thoughts.

new richie hawtin discography

2000-06-09 Thread Brian J Dillard
Given all the fertile discussion re: Hawtin lately, I thought I'd take a moment
for a shameless plug of the exhaustive Hawtin discography I just launced at
www.plastikfan.org.

The discog on the m-nus site is pretty good, but it lists only tracks, not
where to find them. Plus, it leaves off a lot of stuff, and not just
embarrassing stuff. The Lords of Acid remixes are listed, but not the Slam and
DBX ones.

I have therefore compiled as exhaustive a discography as I could from my own
collection. There are three separate pages: artists, tracks and releases, all
of which is cross-linked.

What I'm looking for, other than to share this with others, is to make it more
of a collaborative effort with others - filling in gaps, pointing out errors,
etc.

Re: [313] Minimal Nation

Hmm. My suspicions entirely. I wish somebody would settle this.

For my part, I asked after a cd version of this release from Hedonizm
records in Brighton, a very well-stocked mail order company, and they told
me there was no cd release. Which is a pity if it's true.

Ross.

Way OT! NYC only (FREE rack unit)

2000-06-09 Thread Dan Balis
Sorry to clutter up the list with this sort of thing but I'm rearranging my apt
and no longer have any need for a SKB gig rig rack unit..If you can pick it
up in Brooklyn, it's yours...

here's a blurb on it from a catalog:

Gig Rig

This is an amazing new innovation from SKB - 20
spaces of
rack mount space in a protected, fold-out,
portable
environment! Modular recessed hinges and latches
allow for
access from front, top and rear! Secret latched
door in rear
for easy rolling out of cables for remote
locations. Built-in grill
for ventilation. Rugged front and rear wheel
assembly for easy
transport. Handy side handles. Rack screws
included. Comes
 fully assembled.

(it's in perfect condition...and free!)

thanks,

dan

new- also tune iDs needed -

2000-06-09 Thread Recoil -
Hi -I just joined this list- my name's Liam (AKA Recoil) and I spin oldskool
hardcore jungle as well as newer db in Toronto where i'm at the
university there -i collect everything though, and I'm looking to expand
into techno, as new DB isn't doing it for me. anyway, I'm trying to source
out a couple tunes- there is a set at this link
http://djsets.hyperreal.org/95.html

by a guy named Billy Desai -
I'm after whatever tune he's playing that comes in around 12:35 or so -also
after the tune he's playing around 24:00 or so -I used to dance to techno at
parties but I am completely clueless regarding labels, tracks, DJs, stores
to look out for, old new -if anybody could give me some insight that would
be very cool. If anyone could recommend some good dark, moody techno -I like
hard stuff but also really subtle hypnotic stuff that would be great -on the
offchance that any of you have an interest in old jungle/hardcore, feel free
to e-mail me privately for any knowledge

regards

Liam
