I just saw Green Velvet dj'ing on Friday night at Voodoo in Liverpool and he played a blinder. The best set I've heard there this year. Your vision is for lots of great, innovative Detroit artists to come over and share their art. The promoters' vision is to make money on their ventures. Those two happen to come together sometimes, but it's far from a guarantee. Apologies if I somehow manage to spark that godawful "integrity" or "art vs. commerce" or "underground vs. commercial" debate again. Re: [313] Detroit Techno in England
is the detroit sound redundant in england now, or can it resurface? well, I think that's something really for people in England to discuss. Second hand guesses on that can get assuming. However, it seems the same lot of ppl go overseas & each time play similar sets. It would be nice if Europe started bringing over the "next" crop out of Detroit. Recloose is on global tour spirts now, but talented DJs such as Magda,Derrick P.,Keith Kemp,Jason Hogans(live),Tony Ollivierra and even veterans like Minx etc. Though these DJs play a somewhat "classic Detroit" sound, they offer up a possible new & younger twist. Its important to support the new and old talents in order to insure the future of what we have now. d _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. USvs.THEM?? (was Re: Jaguar Video)
Hi list, this thread is starting to annoy me..the part concerning us (313'ers) and them (rest of the world). I don't think we have any right to consider us some sort of illuminated caste, as being culturally advanced because we choose to listen to so-called underground music. People are entitled to listen to whatever they feel, and this choice should'nt categorize as being poor shallow souls who accept whatever the man throws out to them. I mean, if most of the mainstream people heard what we were listening to they would probably say the same thing..there is no VERB to spread to the masses. To each his own, and if you like cheesy trance it ONLY means we'll never go clubbing together. bye sorry for the rant, but im still in the office and not too happy bout it! ;-) fab || Web Developer || [EMAIL PROTECTED] || || www.deepend.it || "If we never looked at things and thought what they might be, we'd still be in the tall grass with the apes." Re: Re: [313] Re: Jaguar Video
This thread has been full of some interesting opinions, it actually reminds me of arguments that were made a few years ago when 'electronica' was supposed to blow up and be the next big thing. Remember all the buzz over 'AMP' I think people within the techno community saw it as signs of an invasion. That overnight artists who were dedicated to making unique and innovative music whould suddenly become hypnotized into selling out because of exposure to a mass audience. Jaguar is a great track with lots of emotion, we can all agree on that. I personally think Rolando deserves the exposure, MTV air-play included. Sure some people will love it and some people will not get it (music is after all an artform) the point is those who do like it will hopefully have had their minds opened and want to develop an appreciation for this music. dave pinter

Re: [313] Re: Jaguar Video
What I've found with people who aren't into techno with Jaguar is most enjoy it. I've even sent tapes of just random good tracks to my friends in Florida and many of them enjoy this track. Some just start asking questions like what is this genre. Some think its music to sophisticated for them. One of my friends who is really into breaks/trance thought he "should be drinking a martini to it". Others just beg to barrow it and the remixes or even to buy it of me but of course I refuse. You can't contain something that is that good. Yes there will be people who will not respect the track as many of us will, but to those who start asking questions because they heard it and then grow to respect and love the music we all do thats great. If they don't truly like the music than it will pass. They will listen to it for a while and then it will make its way back to a stack of cds that they don't listen to anymore and they will forget about it. If I was watching MTV and into that mostly garbage music I would be glad someone put Jaguar on it as compared to something by lets say Sonique or Alice deejay or one of those trendy producers. Maybe Jaguar will reach my brother by way of MTV and he'll stop listening to the mainstream trash rap or reach my sister and make her stop being obsessed by those boy bands and their music they don't make. As much as I don't like Jaguar being broadcasted on MTV I'm not going to complain because there is good that can come from it. -Stacey

I saw heard this 12" the other day and the track in question sounds like a straight ahead remix. I'm surprised that the Basement Boys of all people would do an unauthorized mix, they're not exactly Sasha or anything, so I thought it must have been done with permission. I've always held the Basement Boys in pretty high regard, at least. Does anyone know the opinion of UR, because, as I say, I am surprised that this has come from the Basement Boys (if it is unauthorized)? Jonny. P.S. That Warp review tested my delete button - it works fine ;)

CiM interview
CiM interview With his some kind of mini-album Service Pack on Delsin last year, Simon Walley from London really suprised the world. Ok, he had done some very decent releases on Headspace, but with the Service Pack ep, he showed an other side of his talents. Quircky electronics with deeply fine soul within. Also not unnoticed by Clair (former Clear co-runner), who asked he to do more stuff. Resulting this year in an ep and the gorgeous album 'Reference'. Time to hook up, and lay down some questions.. interview uploaded @ forcefield ___ forcefield | mindless entertainment http://www.forcefield.org _ __ ___
Am i in the right place?
I could have sworn that I joined this list because of my interest and I will even go so far as to say passion for DETROIT music both past and present. I recently posted a message informing everyone of an even newer cover of the Song Knights of the . "produced by" Karizma on the label Basement Boys from the States. Does anyone know or care to comment on this furthermore sacrilege to our anthem the peoples anthem It even credits Underground Resistance (not anyone person specifically). On a side note, what's up to all the people in the house this past Sunday @ Temple for the Sandwiches video release party. Hey Fellas "Shirt Up" Hey Ladies "Pants Down" If you don't know you will soon find out what this is all about Also thanks to Ian & Linda thanks for bigging up my man moonstarr's performance, he is definitely doing some crazy music. Watch out for the PTR music coming your way Are you out there Detroit?? Later, David Cooper check www.technologix.org tonight for Clear Radio 8pm -10pm EST for the musically inclined
Fw: The not so Incredible Warp Party
One more try without cusswords - my report on the Warp Records party: A quick report on the Incredible Warp Party - overall the bands were great but Warp's organisation was pretty appalling! I guess the last IDM list before I left was a bad omen - whilst Orbital received the 137th declaration that their music was "sh*te" (and the 136th declaration that their music was "utter sh*te") despite being "intelligent" "dance" and "music" for 10 years, Radiohead get their 5000th accolade for being pretty good despite being "wankky shoegazer rock propped up by decent remixers" for far too long (at least Elvis had the testicles to end it all instead of making a career out of bitching about it). First off the place was the most impossible place to find ever - it was literally in an industrial estate somewhere in the middle of the docklands area, and Warp would have made it easier to find by putting a picture of the fish docks next door on the flyer instead of the Millenium Dome located across the river (which any signposts that had been up have now been taken down pending its impending demolishment!) Still driving around London gave us plenty of time to beech about just how bad UK garage and progressive trance is! It makes Radiohead sound good! Finally we find the place and some of the bouncers have blocked off the road and are taking backhanders to let people park or sending them to a McDonalds car park a 20 minute walk away. We decided to bite the bullet and pay a fiver but were then denied the chance thanks to another of their number telling them no more because they have to leave emergency exits. Beeching about another 20 minutes getting there was denied thanks to being able to park on the street 2 minutes away for nothing - would we have been prepared to give them a fiver a couple of minutes earlier knowing that!?! I think not! So finally we were able to walk to the venue to be confronted by the biggest queue in the universe. All those long-haired faggots queuing for Radiohead tickets in subzero temperatures in New York were complete lightweights compared to this queue - it went on over the horizon! Shane being a seasoned queue jumper decided we should walk all the way to the front and try and blag our way into the queue which we did sooo easily it was a joke. So we got in only to be confronted with a second queue to be searched - one guy told us the reason it was taking so long was that 1 person in 3 with bags was carrying a minidisc! Some kid had his flyers which he wanted to give away afterwards confiscated. It felt we were being treated like we were queueing up for gas chambers instead of a £20 a ticket party for a label most of us there had been supporting for 11 years (and so had probably paid out several hundred/thousand pounds for the ticket in the long run). I hope someone got an MD in and bootlegs their show to death! [they did] Finally inside - there were about 7 portable festival toilets which for people waiting an hour and a half in the cold temperatures to get in was yet another queue for them to join. There were two factory units which were probably used as fish docks in real life, one labelled The Boiler and the other unlabelled - on the positive side they had done a nice job in cleaning them up and removing the smell of fish. **SPECIAL WACKNESS AWARD FOR WARP** Its the middle of October and it was a mild night but it could well have turned out to be cold and wet like the previous weekend - there was no indication that it would be a semi-open air do and most people were dressed pretty lightly. So we checked out the two stages... The Boiler was a room with windows that were vibrating manically (just waiting for the moment when the right pitch was hit and they all burst showering the pimply kids in anoraks sitting underneath with vicious shards of glass) where I spent most of the night and seemed to be more of a Skam room than a Warp room... There was a guy playing who looked half oriental and half whippet - he was pretty good playing the standard IDM genre fare to a high standard. We checked out The Other Fish Shed which was the most ill-designed venue ever - firstly there was a wall down the middle - not like a wall you could look over but a wall that went to the ceiling with a door in the middle - Warp had taken the liberty to put speakers in the non-stage area. There was a bar in the non stage half which was totally fing mfing jammed and crammed with thirsty-assed mfers whilst next door there was a bar with bored looking staff waiting for customers. Some hip hop type dudes were playing behind the stage obviously scared that someone may see their performance. We decided we would ask the girl on the soundtable where we could find out who is playing where and when. "Excuse me could you tell me where we can find out where and when the acts are playing tonight?" "I'm sorry I can't tell you that. I do know but its a secret" **SPECIAL WACKNESS AWARD FOR WARP #2** I pay yo
Subject: RE: [313] metropolis
>>that's possible, i hope not though the b/w version looks better imo<< I would definitely argue to the contrary on that; the computer tinting is probably the best I've ever seen on a silent film and definitely doesn't detract; however it does omit most of the film at 80 minutes long (last I heard they had a 3 hour version being prepared in Germany which was almost the cut of the original film!). The "colorized" version however did have the most appalling soundtrack ever - I literally was unable to endure the film with the music which Moroder had added - really really foul rock music like Queen and other f***ing awful stuff. Whenever I watch it I play a selection of my own choice of music - FSOL's "Expander" is good because it pretty much follows the mood of the film all the way through... What nobody has mentioned is Mills intention to "..educate people in the social theories of Metropolis..." or some such prententious claim. These are by far the weakest parts of the movie being derieved from the most naive platitudes of Communism and Christianity - if the film was left to these alone rather than the visuals it would have sank into obscurity decades ago! A lot of people (on this list and off) who are into this would have already bought their copy a long time ago when it came out first time. Supposing that's a few thousand around the UK, that's a big dent in any singles sales these days. Could be a reason. I, like most, haven't got the money to be buying two copies of records (friends have to lend me records for doubles fun!) RE: [313] Jaguar in UK charts
Here in Holland the radio played Kosheen's 'Hide U' every day and they reached the top of the charts without a massive promotional campaign. There wasn't even a video from 'Hide U'. Kosheen had a big hit with this tracj over here, everybody knew this song. SO i do think it is possible for a track to reach the top of the charts but they do need airplay from some radio/tv station. Jaguar in UK charts
I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned this yet but 'Jaguar' debuted at number 43 in the UK pop chart on sunday, much much lower than I personally expected. Anyone got any thoughts on why? Maybe the fact that the release date was put back a week had something to do with it? (It was originally scheduled for Oct 3rd, then went back to Oct 9th) Another possible reason might be that the promotion wasn't adequate. For example, it was handled in the UK by a company called Sainted PR, who, whilst a big music PR company, aren't exactly known for their techno activities - they usually do guitar bands and dance pop etc. My man Jonas Stone at Phuture Trax did the UR party a couple of years back, and does all the Tresor and Mills releases etc, so I (and he, actually) would have thought he should have been the obvious choice. Apparently Sainted got it as a result of the distribution deal 430 West/UR hooked up. Mind you, there have been plenty of Rolando interviews in the last crop of music mags her, so... Also, there was no real advertising to speak of. Azzido Da Bass 'Doom's Night' was also released last week and that has entered the chart at about number 6. The difference is that they have a massive promotional campaign behind them - Nottingham, where I live, is covered with flyposters, just as it was for the release of Zombie Nation's 'Kernkraft 400'. Anyone got any thoughts on this? Whatever, I guess it's unlikely ot go much higher. Records don't tend to climb the chart slowly these days like they used to. Instead they tend to enter, then slide downwards. Tom MF

New SND album...
. SND: stdiosnd types cd/2xlp (Mille Plateaux) PRESS WRITEUP -- One of mille plateaux's most popular acts of 1999 return with their highly anticipated second full length called 'stdiosnd types.' This follows last year's quintessential release 'Makesnd Cassette,' a phenomenal example of interface design in music that earned them a nomination for album of the year by the prestigious Ars Electronica committee. Residing in Sheffield, UK, Mat Steel and Mark Fell continue to develop the aesthetic and conceptual anatomy of 'Makesnd Cassette,' focusing on virtuality, machinish and digitality by giving and introduction in minimalism of the 21st Century. 'stdiosnd types' is both more traditional and more abstract than their first album, aiming to reach further in each direction than ever before. In doing so, it highlights features from both the early US techno scene and contemporary digital compositions. Here, each tradition is used as a template, throught which snd trace lines of mutual opposition. By reducing musical components to a minimum, snd aim to address what exists in the bargin between the listenable and unlistenable. In this respect, their music articulates a dislike of the artistic environment they ahve inherited and resists the inward pull of the genre within which they are often placed. So, put on your headphones and listen to one of 2000's most captivating minimalist releases. LANCE WRITEUP -- SND take a break from their more rhythmic looped approach to minimalism on this new album in favor of a much subtler down- tempo pace. SND utilize all the sounds that you grew to love on their past releases but arrange them this time in almost a loungy minimal electronica style. Stdiosnd Types features a really nice twist to the SND sound and a style i dont recall hearing before. Is it jazzy microsound with warmth? Is is miminal lounge glitch? Whatever you want to call it, it's highly recommend and will be on my Tops List of 2k. RELEASE INFOS: . New Terre Thaemlitz release...
. Terre Thaemlitz: interstices cd/2xlp (Mille Plateaux) PRESS WRITEUP -- Terre Thaemlitz latest electroacoustique release, Intersteices (meaning small spaces or cracks between objects), ostensibly presents itself as an album about process. In particular, Thaemlitzs accompanying text discusses two processes called Framing and Systolic Composition. However, Thaemlitz attempts to complicate the formalist trappings of an album about process' which plague so many digital synthesis and electroacoustique projects by defining his recurrent use of these processes in relation to the intended socioanalytical thematics of his compositions. In particular, Thaemlitz is interested in using 'Interstital' sounds and compositional processes as metaphors for identities which exist between dominant binarism of sexuality, gender and ethnicity. The compositions in 'Interstices' raise issues of Transgenderism (including intersexuality and transsexuality), queer pansexuality, identity politics and the essentialist dangers of disenfranchised 'homecoming' fantasy. He also discusses the frustrations of developing audio discourse in a marketplace which repeatedly restricts fair-use sampling, arguing that musicians should be able to use sampling in the same manner that writers use quotations with footnotes. As usual, Thaemlitz undertakes these discussions with a critical eye to his own actions as a producer. As an award-winning international dj and long time audio experimentalist in New York's underground clubs, Terre Thaemlitz produces audio works which exploit the contrasting functions of music as a socializing force and a point for subjective release. Since 1992 he has run his own record label called Comatonse Recordings, and has recorded for many other labels including Instinct, Subharmonic, Caipirinha, and Daisyworld. Thaemlitz is also credited for remixes and collaborations with Bill Laswell, Jane Dowe, Material, Haruomi Honoso, The Golden Palominos, William S Burroughs, Drum Komputer, Adam Shaikh and Chugga. In critical response to the over-genrefied demands of the music marketplace, a number of recent releases have taken the form of genres typically not associated with Thaemlitz, such as an album of neo-expressionist piano solos (Die Roboter Rubato), and and anthology of electronic dance genres (G.R.R.L.). Meanwhile, Thaemlitz has continued to pursue his primary interest of direct digital synthesis though such releases as 'Couture Cosmetique,' 'Means From an End,' and 'Love For Sale.' Through the crossing of musical genres, Thaemlitz hopes to complicate notions of music's universality by approaching different genres as systems of representation, the signifiers of which may be engages at will and without the rigorous training typically associated with such specializations. LANCE COMMENTS -- I dont know if i agree (or even understand) the issues that Terre Thaemlitz attempts to address on his releases but I always seem to enjoy his music and 'Interstices' is no exception. This album features thirty tracks of electroacoustique-glitch-microsound- field recording-electronica that take the listener on a sonic journey that winds it's way though a variety of moods & atmospheres - from dark and unsettling to cold and minimal and everything inbetween. New M.R.I. full length...
. M.R.I.: rhythmogenesis cd/2xlp (Force Tracks) PRESS WRITUP: 'Rhythmogenesis' is the first long player of Frankfurt based duo Stephan Lieb & Frank Elting. M.R.I. are representatives of the emerging German minimal house scene. M.R.I. are on of the Force Tracks' best selling artists, which has a profound effect on the house/tech-house scene, played and praised by some of the world's top djs. It began with their first Force Tracks 12" single 'Dauerlaufer,' a momentous release that sent an eloquent message to the masses that these two were destined for greatness. Their recent maxi once again recieved critical acclaim and has laid the foundation for this significant full-length debut. With 'Rhythmogenesis,' M.R.I. have effectively administered an injection that is exquisitely refreshing in a time of over-formulated generic regurgitation that much of house music seems to be steadfast in. M.R.I. produce a deep journey on their first album, conjuring variations of minimal techno, dub, minimal and even deep house. A release that is arguably one of Force Tracks most accessible releases to date, and essential for fanso of minimal house, 'Rhythmogenesis' promises to be another influential Force Tracks releases that is profoundly revolutionizing commercial house music. LANCE COMMENTS -- After a pair of excellent 12"s on Force Tracks, M.R.I. release their first album of deep dubby tech-house. The album features four tracks off their previous 12"s (including the summer club smash Dauerlaufer) along with four new tracks. The tech-house that M.R.I. is percussive enough to be floor-friendly and deep enough to be enjoyed afterhours. Fans of Dub Taylor, Dirk Diggler, Matthias Schaffhauser, or even Sascha Funke should be into this one. Recommended. RELEASE INFO: . New Tomas Jirku release...
. Tomas Jirku: sequins cd (Force Inc) PRESS WRITEUP -- Tomas Jirku is the first Canadian signing and latest North American addition to the Force Inc/Mille Plateaux collective, further developing the freshly minded genre of Clickhouse and Click Techno. This release comes after his highly acclaimed release Variants on the Alien8 label. Prior to Variants, Jirkuy had made a massive impact online with his mp3 tracks on the Notype.com label. In fact, the Variants project spawned from direct interaction with fans and Jirku in the creation of the compositions by posting their opinions and ideas. Following this, Jirku would upload variations of what was taken from these interations. Czech Republic born Jirku uses a unique process of recording, completely computer based, that allows him to explore deeper into sounds. He tries to be subtle with his use of digital manipulation to add layers that couldnt be achieved using conventional studio techniques. Motivated by the extreme Toronto climate, and unlike the darker, cooler Variants release, Sequins was produced over the warm summer months, hence reflecting a more upbeat funky disco feel with fast tempos, bouncy rhythms and a more immediate sound in comparison to her previously heavy atmospheric compositions. Jirku meticulously focuses on the most minute elements in the rhythm and tried to stay away from the distracting elaborate bass lines that are such a usual main element in techno. Digital glitches are an integral part of each combination, where subtle distortions extracted from each element of a song continually enhance the rhythm. Many of the tracks on Sequins were composed as a deconstruction of funk samples using heavy digital manipulation and filtering. As Force Inc. attempts to revolutionize techno, Jirku composes rhythms and textures complex enough for listening yet upbeat and groovy enough for the clubs. Enter the glitch-funk. LANCE COMMENTS: After his excellent but relatively relaxed Variants cd on Alien8, Tomas Jirku delivers this album with more of an uptempo, straightforward, and floor friendly feel. With Sequins Jirku still applies his brand of experimental dub but this time around a funky tech-house/techno/disco framework. But even though this album is more of an uptempo affair, it still maintains somewhat of the relaxed atmosphere by keeping the percussion and basslines light. More solid music from Jirku showing his skill in more floorfriendly realms. Imagine a Farben & Daft Punk collaboration and you'll have an idea of what Tomas has going on here. RELEASE INFOS: . Okay, let me start with the obligatory apology for OT content. But when it comes to a quesiton about all things musical, this is the place I look. Does anyone know anyone/anywhere where a one could get keyboard instruction in the Detroit area? Like actually playing the thing with your hands, not quantizing notes. I'm not ttrying to go find someplace out of the yellow pages where some krusty dude will give me $100/hour lessons. Not to give the wrong impression. I'm willing to spend some loot. Maybe even $100 per lesson. But I would like the person doing the teaching to have a little familiarity with where I (we) are coming from. But also want to learn from someone who was themselves well trained. Any suggestions? Thank you. _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. A short message from TP regarding Australian Tour & Euphoria Sundays
Greetings! It is with the absolute deepest regret that I must cancel my trip to Australia. I have been looking forward to coming to Australia for many years. However, I was placed in a very difficult position which forced me to make a firm decision to cancel this tour. Perhaps one day I will get the honor to finally be able to share my musical vibe on Australian soil. It is with further disappointment and regret that I must inform you that Steve Crawford and I have decided to make Sunday October 29th (The Euphoria Halloween Party) our FINAL NIGHT at Club Karma. This decision was primarily mine with Steve in full agreement and support of my decision. I will continue to spin each Sunday night thru the 29th. I hope you accept this letter under the spirit in which it was written. peace & respect, Terrence (TP) Parker p.s.
