From: darw_n [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I think its because the whole notion of the DJ being a creative artist is
lost. The newer DJ's never even thought of creating, they entertain,
rockstardom, the very thing we rebelled against to begin with...

Instead of oh, I am going to take this hook, and this break down and
create

something new, it has become *exactly* what a wedding or radio DJ or a POP
band does, they play *exactly* what the crowd wants to hear...

The older DJ's, or some of the persistent ones (like myself) find the
creation to be for more interesting, and far more valid. But the problem
here is that this is very hard to communicate to a new DJ. So many times,
that I actually got in arguments with normal non techno orientated people
about DJing. They could not understand that it can be more that just
playing records...

More Streamlining

2001-01-30 Thread Phonopsia
In an effort to remove SPAM from these lists (of which I've been a major
culprit), I opted to create a 313 station on mp3.com. I know it's sort of
presumptuous since I'm not actually from Detroit. I did live in Ann Arbor
for a while when I was a kid if that counts ;), but I think it's a needed
step to compliment the TechKnow list, and get 313 and TechKnow under control
so we don't have to sift through 100+ emails/day. Although it's been rather
calm lately, I don't anticipate it will remain that way. Work smarter, not
harder, right?

So... if any producers on these lists would like to submit their mp3.com
member page names to me, and a list of tracks you would like to have
broadcast at the station, please email me that information. I figure with
the response to Redux, and the number of listen to my tracks emails I get
every day, this should be a hit. Not to mention how many of us are looking
for good new music online while we toil at the 9-5. Hopefully this will make
life a little easier on both of those accounts, and possibly get us some
much needed promotion.

At the moment, I'm not going to restrict people off-list from submitting
material to me, but if it gets too big I may impose this standard at a later
date. Wishful thinking, eh? All material must be in the spirit of these
lists though. Hopefully we all know what that means without being too strict
or too loose with our defintions. The idea is, if you produce drum n bass, I
probably wouldn't post the track unless it had a uniquely Detroit feel to
it. Make sense? I think it's not so much what you make as the spirit in
which you make it, so we'll go that route. The basic standard is going to
be, do I think most people on this list would think it fits the broadly
defined mold? If so, then I'll post it. I'm not going to be a tyrant.

As I will be reviewing compositions for content, I may from time-to-time
post reviews of new material submitted for the station. Let me know what you
think of this idea one way or the other, or pay us a visit at
http://www.mp3.com/stations/313 I say pay us a visit, b/c I'm the only one
on there right now. ;) Hopefully that will change soon. It's not my intent
to prevent people from sharing their new music directly with the list, but
hopefully to limit the volume of I posted revision #7 of the track I made
yesterday. I do this as much to prevent myself from these annoyances as
everyone else. Let's see what happens!

Safety Scissors seemed to always have these awesome off-kilter beats

i play on groovetech most every week (have a regular 10 to noon

use my radio time to explore new arrivals and re-fresh on the old

often play out, it is also about context. call me craze, but i can
not wake up saturday morning and pop off 2 hours of dancefloor

Since I've mentioned the TechKnow list a couple of time and I've had about
10-15 emails asking about it, I thought I'd do Todd a favor and re-post the
info on it. See below. The subscription info below is *wrong* though. You
will need to subscribe by visiting
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/313techknow/

The list has 46 members and it's not even a week old. It's going quite well
so far.

Tood Gys's original message:

Hey 313ers,
Quick announcement and invitation: The Tech-Gear list seems to have drifted
away; this was an eGroups list with 313 music production techniques as the
main focus. I was going to take over Tech-Gear as moderator, but apparently
it was taken down before I got a response. Reason being that the active
community just wasn't large enough.

However, I think that list was a great idea, so a new list has been created
to provide 313 producers, both novice and experienced, with a place to talk
about specific production techniques, reviews of gear, etc. If you produce
your own music and want to share ideas or get tips from other musicians,
this is the place to do it. If you've ever wanted to start making your own
detroit-style tracks and don't know where to begin, this is a great
opportunity.

I'm hoping to make 313TechKnow the perfect compliment to our list here at
hyperreal.  313@hyperreal.org deals with the music we love;
[EMAIL PROTECTED] will deal with how to make it.

I'm going to keep an active role as moderator to ensure that all posts are
313 relevant so no one will have to deal with candy-ravers asking how to
make Goa trance from their cracked copy of ReBirth =] That in mind however,
the list will be still be open minded in styles; trying to enlist members
with interests in everything from hard UR-style electro to the deep dubby
minimal sounds coming out of berlin.

Anyway, I would love to establish a strong community for the list, so if you
are interested please subscribe. I'm going to do my best to recruit members
with a throrough knowledge base about 313-related production techniques.

it all depends on the purpose of the mix. personally I wish more radio

on ends, purely for continuity.

I like to hear the music in its entirety, simply so I can listen to it. I
make myself cd's that aren't mixes, but compilations so I can hear complete

Re: [313] the long dj set

2001-01-30 Thread Fred Heutte
This is an issue of continuing interest, because I tend to let tracks
play out and mix in late. At the very beginning it was because my
mixing skills weren't so good and I just needed more time to select
the next track and get things ready. But after a while I preferred it,
although I like the quick-in-and-out approach of other DJs quite a bit.

To some degree this issue is influenced by the content. Vocal house
tracks tend to be fairly short and designed for a very consistent
mix-in/break/central section/break/mix-out-quick approach. You have
to be careful because you don't want the vocals stepping on each other.
Mixing in key or at least not clashing really matters with those tracks.

Trackier house provides more flexibility, but I've noticed fairly quick
mixing continues as the dominant style for a lot of the pro DJs. Whether
this is because they don't want to get bored with their current crate
or they don't want the floor to lose focus, or both, is sometimes hard
to say. Also, a lot of house (well, a lot of *all* styles) is pretty
nondescript, not to say mediocre, and there isn't enough variation to
play out an entire track.

The same goes for a lot of the standard techno, particularly the drier
European style, but on the other hand I hear a lot of long mixing with
those tracks, and even moreso with epic or progressive house, not to
mention trance.

I know there is a lot of variation among Detroit DJs, but if I were to
characterize the Detroit style, I'd say it's quick-mixing; I'm sure this
goes back to hip hop and the influence of Jeff Mills on a generation of
radio listeners. This reaches to the limits with techno-bass-electro-booty,
and even I play that much more limited sections of tracks in that style,
although I definitely don't have the skills of the good Detroit booty
movers :)

It's interesting to see how different DJs approach the same records.
I found this out again when K.J. put together an impromptu set out of my
record bag at the last 313 party at Detroit Science. Gave my stuff a
whole new life!

I tend to play one particular way because of my tastes, limits as a
technical DJ, and the records I've gotten by luck or hard work (sometimes
both), but I am *motivated* by DJs with many different styles. The
reason why house and techno persist and have longevity that other styles
don't seem to is, in part, because of the flexibility of these bodies
of music when it comes to presentation. I could go on about how
vinyl is an important factor in this, but I better not oughtta...

Well said! I generally prefer the quicker mixing myself (to listen to I mean).
Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke, DJ Bone (who I'm going to hear this w/e in Birmingham)
but saying that you can't really mix House in the same way as Techno. Sneak
chops it up a bit and I'm sure there are other Chicago DJs that mix House in a
similar way, but generally house DJs seem to go for the smoother blend, which is
fine. The style that I don't like is progressive / trance DJs that play 10min
tunes. As I said in a previous thread, journey or party? - I know which I'd

the more i read this, the more i ask myself if you guys have ever heard a
really
superb dj (which e.g. jeff mills is a solarsystem away from). even techno
can be
mixed fast but smooth, interesting but building. i can't understand why
people like
this i need to play 10 vinyls in 3 minutes style, no matter what comes. no
matter
if it even is more bumping than smooth. this always makes me completely
confused

faster than the one which is just playing (umfgadumppengbaengbumm). even if
i seem

i love to spin two tracks for 10 minutes (if possible) together and play

there is much more a good dj can build up than with crashing tracks into

Yeah, mobile phone tunes are a big business in Finland, but they're always the
latest (s)hits from the TOP-20.
I've been thinkin about makin Farley Funk's Jack my body as a ringin tune for
a while now, but I'm too lazy. It would make a perfect cover since the original
itself is a BLEEP classic!

Other hits could be No U.F.O.s, Nightdrive thru Babylon, Wiggin, Acid
tracks (not sure what this would sound like...), Big fun, Original Video
Clash, Nude photo etc...

And a special tune for those moments when you're visiting your relatives in
some backwoods of the worst redneck/bible-zone: Duelling banjos from the
Deliverance;) I'm sure the locals would appreciate it!

That's Prescription Every Night on Prescription, it's by Rob Mello Luke
Solomon and is based on a sample of Dr. Love by First Choice on Salsoul.
And it sounds great if you get a second copy and, just before the filtered
break, scratch the second copy back half a beat. As it rises out you get
this lovely out of the deep doubled up beat. T'was one the anthems of my
college days, that track. So there.

 Hi 313ers

If someone could ID the following track for me i would be so happy (i've
been trying to discover what it is for a few years now after i heard Carl
Craig play it on his Radio One Essential mix...)

It's in Kenny Larkin's set on Plus 8 Transmissions part a, and it plays at
 aroun 18mins 30 secs.WHAT a track : kind of a looped strummed guitar
sound with simple but effective bassline with the occasional break in the
loop...vocal comes in : searchin'.searchin' every night which
 loops round and round

 Hopefully yours,

I think the fee is a good thing, as personally,

HEHE[sarcasm]...

why don't you ask where that came from first...

And why its written like that...

Its a pretty simple explainantion...

And what do you care anyways??? Just a thought??

Anyways, It's not by my design that those are there, I downloaded half of my
own sets of Napster, with the exception of Life..., which ended up on
there anyways. The ones that I put on there has simply my agents web
address on there, nothing more. Plus its written in the way I normally
write my name, with the underscore...

The sets with all the name is my manager, who is a good friend of mine,
trying out his new idea for marketing. Well, you see how outta hand it
got. Also, the names are what he thought was the artists I used on that,
and other recordings (there are three sets released by him from the Sphere
Offices)...

I personally don't own a single Richie Hawtin record. But he had it pretty
close, especially the Isolee, I was surprised by that because no one in this
area knows that!!!

Anyways, I have been trying to figure out how to fix that issue, but its too
late, so I just chalk it up as a mistake...

BTW, That recording is called life... and it was made right here, in the
basement...

And none of those recordings are in anyway toneshift recordings, just in
case you used those to try to understand the shift...

Im kinda flattered that I am the point of frustration in your life!!!

The reason why it says [LIVE @ FUSE] is so people find it easier, same with
the artist names...

And I *did* explain why I have it on my files, its because I had to download
the two other ones (both of which are live and bootlegged). Life... is
the only one I made for release, which never did do to license problems...

Look, I felt stupid too when I did a vanity search on napster and WHAM, all
that came up. I respect and understand your criticisms, do you really think
I, or any other artist for that matter, would want to appear to come off
like that? As a fake?? I would hope not!!

I OKed this action, and it was a mistake, and it got circulated before I
could go over his house and check it (Hell, I didn't even thinking of
checking it till a week later, I never thought it would be an issue till
later in the game!!;). The main reason behind Sphere putting it there is so
people who might be interested in one artist, or one genre (live @ fuse is
in itself a Napster genre;) would find my recordings, three in all. That's
all there is to look into that; it wasn't some devious slanting move, if you
were looking up Saunderson, you *may* find my CD worth a shot. That's why
there these brackets [*] around the added stuff, to separate the title and
my name from the artists and that LIVE @ FUSE garbage

We all screw up, I didn't even do this, and I'll say I screwed up. Is that
OK??

I Kinda like that Life... CD though, I think I'll listen to it right now!!

I reckon it totally depends on the tunes

That sums it up well! The harder minimal stuff sounds better mixed quickly, but
some of the deeper Detroit style Techno could sound better blended - it all
depends on the tunes you're playing. All I can say to anyone who doesn't
appreciate the fast style of mixing is Listen to Dave Clarke mix. If you still
don't like that style then it's obviously just not your cup of tea!

you are not alone on this one my friend :-)

I too hate the 'look mama how many records I can squeeze into an hour'-style.
Just listen to Derrick Carter or Laurent Garnier, mixing for four minutes or
more, they just tell a complete story. It oftens happens that you just don't
know which sound belongs to which track, a new track is born that very moment,
and that's dj-magic for me!

And finally someone who dares to say that Jeff Mills is not God behind the
decks.

Smoothness all the way baby!

RD

the more i read this, the more i ask myself if you guys have ever heard a
really
superb dj (which e.g. jeff mills is a solarsystem away from). even techno
can be
mixed fast but smooth, interesting but building. i can't understand why
people like
this i need to play 10 vinyls in 3 minutes style, no matter what comes. no
matter
if it even is more bumping than smooth. this always makes me completely
confused
when i heard a good track and another one is rolling in like a train in my
face, 5 beats
faster than the one which is just playing (umfgadumppengbaengbumm). even if
i seem
to be alone on this point of view, but i can't dance to that.
i love to spin two tracks for 10 minutes (if possible) together and play
around with them.
there is much more a good dj can build up than with crashing tracks into
each other.

i contacted the guys at novarum (they're friends of mine) and let them know
how spam-free the 313 list is, and how much the 313 list recipients dislike
spam.

please keep in mind that these guys are individuals who love music, just
like all of us, and are trying to get their business off the ground. they
have a great website and carry only quality music. anyone in europe (and
the states for that matter) should check them out -- but only as an
alternate resource to record time ;) --just a joke

some interesting news...

greetings

2001-01-30 Thread --autopilot--
Hi, my name's Ash Nehru, signing on after lurking for a couple of weeks...

I've been following the interesting thread regarding DJ software recently.
As I'm currently developing (privately) experimental audio performance
software I'd like to respond to a recent comment by Scott Brandon -

No computer program will ever give you the freedom it takes to truly
work a record, and a crowd Could you seriously see Derrick May,
or Stacey Pullen, or especially Claude Young using a computer to just
smooth mix their sets???

I agree that computer mixing has a number of major problems that haven't yet
been overcome. There's an image / aesthetic problem - the Microsoft office
cubicle ethos, cold, grey, rectinlinear and establishment, has come to
dominate the way people think of computers. There's also problems of high
price, poor reliability and sound quality, and the need to transport and
soundcheck before sets. The biggest problem is that control interfaces in
the main are hopelessly fiddly and counterintuitive, and lack the rewarding
tactile feedback of vinyl. Faced with these problems, software that simply
tries to replicate the vinyl interface simply doesn't give back enough to
make it worthwhile - after all, vinyl is standard, widely available, simple,
sexy, and does the job fine. Further, by making DJing too easy half the
fun is lost.

But I do feel that computer mixing (in the abstract) offers a number of
possibilities for improved freedom and control. First and most obviously,
quantised tempo - freedom from beat-matching and playback speed limitations.
Second, quantised pitch - within limits, allowing any track to mix in key
with any other track, or be shifted to allow true melodic improvisation.
Third, since they're random-access, not linear like CDs or vinyl, the
ability to repeat and reorder loops within tracks to allow the DJ to really
work the record (say by stretching out a break) in ways impossible with
vinyl, and to switch much more rapidly between records (eg. one every 4
bars - try that with vinyl). Fourth, multiple channels - if freed from beat
/ pitch match duties, the DJ could work regularly with eight (or more)
decks, allowing new types of layering experiments. This would move the
DJing task closer to that of a live performer or remixer. Fifth, the ability
to easily use your own music without having to press CDs or dubplates.
Sixth, the ability to store large (possibly online) databases of tracks,
allowing the DJ to regularly play from collections of hundreds or thousands
of tracks, which currently is impractical with vinyl. Seventh, a potentially
limitless library of effects. And finally, new control interfaces (such as
gestural control, light-beam interfaces, augmented reality) could provide
truly awesome interactive / tactile qualities.

These factors suggest to me that as the problems are solved (and this is a
fledgeling field) computer mixing will start to take off. I'm betting that
there's a company out there that will one day produce a magic box that
revolutionises and democratises DJing the way devices like the Atari ST and
Roland TR808 did for production. Established DJs might not take it up,
because they have already invested so much time acquiring vinyl skills - but
this won't stop the kids who are now in their diapers and haven't got any
sentimental attachment to spinning bits of plastic. Lazy DJs will use
technology as a crutch; creative DJs will push the technology to create new
sounds.

I'm also betting that the beauty and simplicity of vinyl (and the pleasure
of watching a skilled DJ) will ensure it a lengthy future. Even though I
play out with a computer, I still love mixing with vinyl. The past coexists
with the future...

If anyone's interested, details of the hummingbird project, which is a start
in this direction (and will one day hopefully be an open-source project) are
at my site below.

I'm surprised at how many people took this seriously
and flamed the kru in their guestbook. Some of the
people's reactions are almost as funny as the website
itself.

HEHE[sarcasm]...

why don't you ask where that came from first...

And why its written like that...

Its a pretty simple explainantion...

And what do you care anyways??? Just a thought??

Anyways, It's not by my design that those are there, I downloaded half of
my

own sets of Napster, with the exception of Life..., which ended up on
there anyways.

But he had it pretty
close, especially the Isolee, I was surprised by that because no one in
this

area knows that!!!

Anyways, I have been trying to figure out how to fix that issue, but its
too

late, so I just chalk it up as a mistake...

BTW, That recording is called life... and it was made right here, in the
basement...

And none of those recordings are in anyway toneshift recordings, just in
case you used those to try to understand the shift...

First off, I play everything from deep house to trance, with influence
from
techno. So, I don't really expect to many people on here to like my
sets,
  nor do I demand that.

do you play them LIVE AT FUSE and then share them on napster as such?

 yeah, I thought so.

Dj Darwin LIVE @ FUSE - life feat. [keven(sic) saunderson, derrick may,
afex(sic) twin, adam beyer, marco carola, isolee, Timo Maas, Richie
 Hawtin, rob hood, halo].mp3

deceptive titling is the mark of a true artist.
