Really, crossing the border from Windsor to Detroit is not that much of a
drag or pain or whatever everyone seems to think it is. I cross nearly
every day and I've never had any trouble nor did I experience any while
crossing to last year's festival. Here's some tips for a simple and quick
crossing. Be certain of the country of your birth and say it when they ask
you citizen of what country? Then when they say where are you going?
just tell them the electronic music festival at Hart Plaza. I know it
sounds tricky but it works. Also note that the tunnel bus takes you right
to the gate of the festival if you decide that parking is a hassle too.

Not to split nose-hairs here, but I'd put Motor City Air up against most
major Metropolis'. One of the more distinct memories I have of London (for
arguement's sake) is that the air was rather thick and tinged with diesel.

Remember that Hart Plaza is on a breezy riverside, and that Detroit does not

RE: [313] DEMF 2K1 ?!?

2001-02-07 Thread Fred Heutte
I don't see what the big deal is about staying in Detroit.
Downtown is just as dangerous (nor not) as most any other big city,
from what I can tell, meaning it's fine as long as you're paying attention.
Maybe less dangerous, since much of it is deserted.

There are definitely dangerous areas outside of the downtown core.
But what I have found is that pretty much wherever you go in this
great wide world, people treat you fine as long as you are respectful
and mind your own damn business.

I must admit getting a little cranky about the attitudes around this.
Got a ride to my mom's house in northeast Washington, DC a couple years
ago, and you know how people will lock the doors on their cars when they
drive into those parts of town? My friend did that coming into my
old neighborhood, despite the fact it's long been one of the safest
places to live in DC. I held my annoyance to myself. Maybe the fact
that some (not all) urban neighborhoods are blessed with stability,
reasonable safely, convenient location, and friendly neighbors who give a
damn about where they live, is better kept secret.

Was it a downtempo cut? If so, it might be Mike's own new record on Mood
Grooves which is Maya Angelou's 'I Rise' poem set to music. Mike's original
is downtempo, but there is a Mr G mix too, apparently, which might be what
he played, although this wasn't on the recent promo due to a mispressing.
The EP is called 'And Then It Was My Turn...', btw, and is out in a month or
so.

And yeah, Titonton Duvante's fine new album is out this month or next on his
own Residual label. It's called 'Selections For Intercourse' and is meant as
a soundtrack to a game of hide the sausage. It's also heaven for string
fans.

On the subject of the DEMF, I know this has probably been mentioned in an

Re: [313] Re: Chuggles info...

2001-02-07 Thread Jonny McIntosh
There's a discography at Amazing Discographies though, as Tristan points out
below, a lot of them don't have song titles so it's not the most useful of
formats for a Prescription discography. My favourite is Put Your Hand In My
Flame... one. I'd only heard the instrumental previous to hearing this on a
Junior Vasquez tape, and thought he had got hold of a wicked accapella.
Though almost everything on Prescription (in its earlier Cajual distributed
incarnation) is essential (as Tristan says, every release has something on
it for you). The stuff with just Ron Trent (King Street incarnation) has
it's moments but the early Prescription is one of THE all time classic
labels of house music. My long overdue guide to classic records should
contain a Prescription section, I reckon. What is Chez Damier doing these
days (apart from a new Chuggles 12)?

Amazing Discographies is at:

http://ad.techno.org/generator.html

Jonny.

A lot of the Prescription records don't have titles
from what I can tell, and even the ones that do don't
always have song titles. Basically, there was a good
deal of redundancy in the earlier releases, like I
think I have about 6 or 7 versions of I Feel the
Rhythm spread out across the releases up through
maybe 111? 100-111 were the earlier releases, and
after that they seemed to get less redundant. That
said, there's something uniquely valuable on each of
the records that will make you want them all. I think
I have the entire catalog from when they were under
Cajual, but I'm really not sure. I get the feeling
there may not be a discog due to the lack of info on
 the records.

The Cajual website is still down, so no clarification
there. I'll try and piece together some Prescription
Essentials sooner or later. Can't promise it
 immediately though.

Hey there everyone going to DEMF '01
Got a link here that might benefit you.
http://www.180096hotel.com/

Through them I just booked our DEMF weekend, a single bed (king/queen) two
person occupancy for $89 a night at the Pontchartrain. Can it get better?
Please don't say yes ;)

Now if anyone can help me find a flight from Mpls. to DTW cheaper than $79
each way. Short of flapping my arms of course.

Fred

PS Looking forward to putting some faces to emails.

I lived in Detroit from '85 to '92 and never had many problems. Same as
Dharma, my buddy's car was broken into and our jackets were stolen (cell
phones and radio left intact) while we were at the old Currency Exchange a
back in '96. My Car was broken into back in '91, but otherwise, nothing
eventful.

True there are som areas of the city that I wouldn't hang out in (Cass/MLK
Blvd area, Warren Ave/23rd, ect...), but that goes for any major city
across the globe.

Fear not travelers, tha D is a cool place to be.

Amen to that. some parts may feel a bit reminiscent of a third world
country, but for the most part you don't have to walk around fearing for
your life. in all the times i've been to detroit, and we're talking some
of
the worst parts, the only thing that's ever happened to me is that my
windsheild got broken and my coat stolen out of the car in february. my
wallet was even left...i like to think it was a cold homeless person.
anyway, you don't need to be afraid of detroit, especially the area of the
demf.

RE: [313] experimental hip hop?

2001-02-07 Thread Todd Gys
Not exactly experimental in their beats...but Digable Planets have always
been a favorite of mine. Definite dub influences in a lot of their tracks
and sweet stream-of-conscious lyrics.

You may also want to check out some of dj slip's stuff. He does some
hip-hop type stuff that's pretty out there.

I'm currently working on a project combining berlin/detroit dub techniques
with dirt deep hip hop beatsI'll keep you posted on that if you're
interested.

Exact definitions aside, check out the following hip hop
artists/releases:

Mix Master Mike - 'Anti-Theft Device' 2LP (Asphodel) 1998
killer fully-realised LP of instrumental hip hop, produced by Naut Humon,
taking the idea of turntablism beyond simple tricks and into advanced hip
hop expressionism (or something like that).

Dj Q-Bert - 'Wave Twisters' 2LP (Galactic Butt Hair) 1988
anything Mix Master Mike can do... i can do better, incredible hands-on
vinyl digital manipulation, like 'Anti-Theft Device' this is inspired
instrumental hip hop.

Company Flow - 'Little Johnny From the Hospital' (Rawkus) 1999
mental hip hop and sticky funk produced by El-P and Mr Len, the personality
and expression in this LP is amazing.

Push Button Objects - 'Trot' (off Schematic 003 12)
PBO - 'Non Existant (Gescom mix)' (off Chocolate Indust. 002 12) 1999
PBO - 'Yambooze' (off 'Deeper Concentration' comp, Oxygen Music) 1998
PBO - 'Nocturnal Advice' (off Skam 011 12)
Edgar Farinas has been producing some pretty interesting hip hop inspired
stuff for a couple of years, his earlier stuff was more on an electronic
IDM tip... while his newer stuff is moving towards a slightly more
conventional cut-up hip hop sound.

Quite a bit of music is being produced under the 'experimental/IDM' hip hop
banner at the moment... I like the above releases because they play with the
stylistic sounds and structure of hip hop, but still keep the tough edge and
street soul that most 'real' hip hop has.

Re: [313] experimental hip hop?

2001-02-07 Thread diana potts

I recently did a bit on Drum Machine Technicians (DJ
Cue and Eddie Def). I read an interesting interview
with them where they pointed out that they noticed a
lot of electronic music producers (in the 90s) were
playing with hip hop beats but hip hop producers were
kinda ignoring what was going on the electronic music
community; hence the stagnation that happen(ed?). This
is from their point of view, mind you, but i thought
it was an interesting point.

http://www.sfweekly.com/issues/1999-10-20/music.html

for the full piece. The DMT project (only 5 albums)
has no hints of hip hop or scratching (the two djs are
pretty experienced in the DJ battle realms)..if
anything its crazy, chunky beats-very much on the
heavier Autechre tip. If you are going to check em
out, i suggest the Terminal Illness album.

Re: [313] Cheap hotel prices in downtown D

2001-02-07 Thread Glyph1001
Hi,

There are a slew of hotels on Jefferson Ave too...starting right past the
Shorecrest motel down to Grand Ave. There's a Days Inn ($55.96 -$69.95 USD
newly remodeled and its got a pool too, so get it while its hot ! My pick!),
Comfort Inn (1999 e. jefferson - $89.00 - $159.00 USD). I checked the price
for Pontchartrain(correct spelling, its down to $89.95 USD!!!). I think
there's a Holiday Inn Express or a Howard Johnsons down there too but I'll
check. Anyway, point your browsers to this link for Days Inn, Comfort Inn or
Pontchartrain:

http://aolsvc.digitalcity.com/detroit/travel/?_dci_e_t=incoming_dci_a_l=webce

nter%2etravelocity%2edigitalcity%2ecom%3a80%2fhotsmultiple%2ectl%3fSEQ%3d98150

521405309802062001%26LANG%3dEN

Click the word hotel in the book room box in the middle then fill out the
necessary info on the next page...make sure you type jefferson ave on the
next page in the address field or those hotels may not show up and select
within 1 mile vicinity. Days Inn should pop up, as well as Pontchartrain
(and others) which has the special key icon under the price...

The Area:

The area in which these hotels are situated seems like an decent area, well
lit, with their own parking lots.I've been around that area in the Fall,
cruisin around there at night and noticed all these hotels, all look
new...very decent. There are alot of car dealers, residentials...I was told
Kenny Larkin and Mills used to live in this area... the US immigration office
is there also and a CVS Pharmacy/Food store (24 hours) if you get the
munchies. Not to mention, a mid-sized plaza somewhere on that street with
all kinds of stores, I think there's a Fuddruckers(sp?) restaurant in the
Plaza too. If Big Boy's is up your alley, there's one in the area too. Just
keep straight down on Jefferson...to just before the entrance bridge to Belle
Isle, on the left side of street. Or check out Shorecrest's famous cruisine,
that Mad Mike recommends.

The restaurants I recommend if you want to go further north on Woodward is
Union Street (look for a green National City sign and parking lot on your
left...great food, very hip, with a bar. =) Or across the street from that
is The Majestic...had dinner with Adam Beyer and his gf, one of the motor
detroit guys, and Alan, there once...very nice. Adam and his gf were both
chompin on some very delicious looking, organic salads. =)

Ok enough blabbing...my apologies, music heads. Just wanted to give people a
rough idea of what to expect ... I hope this helps...if you need any help,
please feel free to email me. =)

The original is Dead Or Alive's ``You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)'', a
rather cheesy pop tune dating from 1985. I haven't heard the mix in
question nor Clarke spin it, so I'm not sure if there are newer mixes of
it. The above is the original, though (or it surely sounds like it,
judging from the lyrics).

Dead or Alive - Spin Me Round was the original, sometime in the
early-mid 80's. Wham/post-Frankie Goes To Hollywood pop dance
whatever era. It was recently sampled and anonymously released in
the form you heard it - or at least the copy i have has art but no
identification.

that I haven't had the mental or typing energy to respond but I will now for
the sake of money.

YES the Atheneum is the MOST expensive place downtown. And even if it wasn't
it would be for that weekend. There's the Ponchartrain on Jefferson that's
kind of costly too I assume. But for the sake of my fellow music lovers, if
there is anything I can do since I'm here to help in terms of researching
places for you let me know.

As a matter of fact when I go downtown this weekend I will take a look around
and find some rates, places and locations and post it to the list.

Everybody does not have a lot of money to travel and I want as many people as
possible to make it here for the event.

I have this record called The IsolationaistI haven't listened to it in a
while..

but I guess it falls into that category.

But for the record I wanna say that there is no such thing as experimental
hip-hop just like there is no such thing as alternative hip-hop. To quote
Greg Tate the only alternative to hip-hop is silence. Remember Bambaataa and
the pioneers used everything to make hip-hop and still do.

Hip-hop is hip-hop. Because when you say experimental that means it goes
outside a norm and that's the kind of BS marketing thinking we want to get
away from.

Which makes me the pose the question of what those records are like that are
reviewed in the Experimental section URB magazine???

Techno is techno right But we could say well these records from that
region emphasize more of a melodic sound or this or that???

The term experimental can only survive if there is something accepted to move
away from. To me all is fair in art, I just use a lot of adjectives and
comparisons but

does anybody know what I mean??? either it's jamming or it isn't and that
could be anything from a Detroit Techno record to some minimalist stuff from
Lamonte Young (weak area for me BTW)

peace,
Five

Check out anything on Mush or Big Dada.

Big Dada's last comp 'Black Whole Styles' is a great intro into the more
unusual hiphop. Some of their other releases like Ty's latest album are
more straight chilled grooves with more blathering about ego's thrown
overtop (it's still a top piece in my mind considering every MC must get pay
dues to themselves).

While on Mush; Aesop Rock's last album 'Float' stole my mind as strangest
hiphop album of the year. The other stuff on Mush ranges from straight
poetics to spoken word drama's, with all sorts of strange noises in midst.

As someone else already mentioned find anything by Saul Williams, he is the

Hi,

There are a slew of hotels on Jefferson Ave too...starting right past the
Shorecrest motel down to Grand Ave. There's a Days Inn ($55.96 -$69.95
USD
newly remodeled and its got a pool too, so get it while its hot ! My
pick!),

Comfort Inn (1999 e. jefferson - $89.00 - $159.00 USD). I checked the price
for Pontchartrain(correct spelling, its down to $89.95 USD!!!). I think
there's a Holiday Inn Express or a Howard Johnsons down there too but I'll
check. Anyway, point your browsers to this link for Days Inn, Comfort Inn
or

Pontchartrain:

http://aolsvc.digitalcity.com/detroit/travel/?_dci_e_t=incoming_dci_a_l=webce

nter%2etravelocity%2edigitalcity%2ecom%3a80%2fhotsmultiple%2ectl%3fSEQ%3d98150

521405309802062001%26LANG%3dEN

Click the word hotel in the book room box in the middle then fill out the
necessary info on the next page...make sure you type jefferson ave on the
next page in the address field or those hotels may not show up and
select
within 1 mile vicinity. Days Inn should pop up, as well as
Pontchartrain

(and others) which has the special key icon under the price...

The Area:

The area in which these hotels are situated seems like an decent area, well
lit, with their own parking lots.I've been around that area in the
Fall,

cruisin around there at night and noticed all these hotels, all look
new...very decent. There are alot of car dealers, residentials...I was
told
Kenny Larkin and Mills used to live in this area... the US immigration
office

is there also and a CVS Pharmacy/Food store (24 hours) if you get the
munchies. Not to mention, a mid-sized plaza somewhere on that street with
all kinds of stores, I think there's a Fuddruckers(sp?) restaurant in the
Plaza too. If Big Boy's is up your alley, there's one in the area too.
Just
keep straight down on Jefferson...to just before the entrance bridge to
Belle
Isle, on the left side of street. Or check out Shorecrest's famous
cruisine,

that Mad Mike recommends.

Just wanted to give people
a

rough idea of what to expect ... I hope this helps...if you need any help,
please feel free to email me. =)

Chow,

G.
A Chicagoan who hangs out in Detroit a little too much. =)

dealing with the authorities

2001-02-07 Thread ani
i hate to say this, and i don't want to scare anyone, but here goes:

- sometimes they will do random searches when you cross the border, for no
reason other than they just feel like it, so be prepared to be searched.
there is no such thing as 'probable cause' for a search by the border cops.

- even though probable cause is required for a detroit/michigan state cop to
search you, they can lie and say you 'looked suspicious' or were 'acting
suspiciously'

- friends of mine with dredlocks have been questioned/searched every time
they cross the border

- if you have an accent when you speak, make sure to have your
passport/green card/identification ready to show the border people. my dad
*is* a u.s. citizen and gets harassed on a regular basis because he does not
have a green card or passport (u.s. citizens *do not* have green cards).

for information on your rights when in the u.s. go to www.aclu.org (american
civil liberties union)
for a guide on what to do if you have an encounter with the police, and your
rights, go to: http://www.aclu.org/library/bustcard.html

you can never be too safe when dealing with the authorities...

good CD's. Hell, I even thought of doing one just for fun.

Hello everybody...

I got this 12 for a long time and wonder who was the artist behind it. It´s
called Unleashed and it´s produced by Subject Detroit. It was released on a
label of the same name. I never heard of another release of Subject Detroit
again. Who is the person behind and are there any other releases??

Thanx in advance.

my favorite would be you better ask somebody on Gothom City. it sounds so
smooth, you could probably mix that with either Chicago house or G-funk type
hiphop.

I listened to DJ Assault's belle isle tech and
  found it
   interesting.
Are there other things that are - like the hip hop
   counterpart - of Berlin
   Techno?
   Is there dubby hip hop?
Is there something like a Profan label?

should pick up DJ Godfather's cd Playa Hatas in Dis House, too, if you
haven't already. unmixed, but so many nice tracks on there. he includes a
mega-mix at the end which puts a nice spin to the tracks. he mixes every
thirty to forty seconds or so.

take care,
Mike

There's a ton of mix cd's out there. DJ Assault's got more than a few of
'em (like the Off the Chainseries on Intuit-Solar), Snowflake's got a few
good CD's. Hell, I even thought of doing one just for fun.

Re: [313] Subject Detroit

2001-02-07 Thread diana potts

The person behind this is Detroit's DJ Bone. It's
his record label and the concept was that each artist
on the label was to be a subject. (he being subject
001 or 01 i believe).
They were to be nameless, hence the quality of
the records would only be based on the quality of the
music on the record and not whose name is on it.

I did a great interview for Massive Magazine with
Bone. I'd post it, but I believe the disc is long gone
and lost :/

RE: [313] experimental hip hop?

2001-02-07 Thread Joe Myers

The word experimental leaves a lot of room for interpretation... but I'm
surprised no one has mentioned the Hipnotech records. To me these sound
great on their own, infused with a healthy dose of Hi-tech funk, but they
are also fun as hell to cut up. I've got 1-5, still haven't picked up the
new double pack. Are people finding these outside of Detroit?

Stay away from Off the Chain for the y2k though..its horrible its like
Assault took all his tracks and just played them all at 45 and +8 on a
modified table. Whenever he wrecks it says 'Dj Assault Off the Chain for the
y2k' which it does repeatedly. It is quite annoying actually...

I have a promoter friend who is visiting the UK, putting the word out on
Australia. He has singlehandedly done more for Detroit music in this country
over the last decade than anyone else I know, and quality music per se.
If you are interested in making contact, drop me a line privately with your
enterprise and contact details, or I can give you his details. He also wants
to touch base with media types.

Cheers

Re: [313] Really experimental hip hop?

2001-02-07 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I think some of the commercial hip-hop is really cutting-edge - especially
on the production front - Timbaland is amazing.

I am sure someone will flame me for this but I really liked the Nelly album
(I keep hearing the Hot S**t acapella over Green Velvet's Answering Machine
in my head) and I think some of the beats on Jay-Z's Dynasty were great.
Busta's first three albums.

Outkast is good and you should check out Organized Konfusion, really
underrated. Also The Roots, Common.

Also Slum Village. I haven't checked out JayDee's new Welcome To Detroit but
I am sure it would be good.

On the turntablist tip, The X-cutioners' album of a few years ago was really
avant garde and the most musical turntable album I have ever heard.

Then when of the most brilliant albums I heard last year was the Tupac
Shakur spoken word tribute The Rose That Grew From Concrete, Volume 1 - the
final track, The Sun The Moon, is spoken by Chief Okena Littlehawk and it
has a Red Planet feel to it. It is amazing.
