Fatboy Slim I'll believe it when I see it. Moby Well... Moby is a techno superstar. He'll be responsible for bringing in a much wider audience to the festival, much like the Roots and Richie Hawtin were to do last year. I'm not going to go poison Carl Craig's cereal over this. I'll know pretty quickly whether or not Moby is going to impress me, then I'll go over to the less crowded stages. I honestly think that a hard core Moby fan is much more likely to be blown away by UR, Interdimensional Transmissions, or any of the Force Inc/Mille Plateux stuff rumored to be appearing than a hard core Blink 182 fan. Carl Cox I'm interested in seeing Mr Cox too. Always controversial on this list, but I hear he can rock it on a good night. What better night for a good night than the DEMF? Laurent Garnier I like Laurent Garnier. He was supposed to play at the first DEMF. and i'm also told several Planet E acts! god forbid! How anti-Detroit can you [EMAIL PROTECTED] Did you boo Jason Hogans and Recloose off the stage last year? Veering off course my little white booty. Re: [313] D?EMF Line-Up
From what I can tell this post seems to stem from the fact that we probably won't see many of the *same* big Detroit-based names on the mainstage this year. This is only my speculation, not based on anything I've heard. One could also guess that someone further down the pop (or pap if you prefer) continuum will be invited as well. I doubt the drama was all that deep and the truth will fall somewhere between this extreme and the overabundance of Detroit artists at the first DEMF (we were very lucky IMO). -d At 8:33 PM -0500 3/26/2001, HDN One wrote: This post will probably cause a bit of controversy but here it is anyway. According to my sources there were originally NO Detroit DJs scheduled to play the main stage at all this year! Here is what we have to offer: Fatboy Slim Moby Carl Cox Laurent Garnier and i'm also told several Planet E acts! Now whether i like or dislike any of the above doesn't matter. Somebody already answered this one but I've lost it (all senses). The track that goes something like.. 'Just a little bit of jazz in your life makes you feel alright.' It may have been titled a little bit of jazz or something like that. Another is a track that says, 'Put your hands up for Detroit, a lovely city.' (both are on the Shake mix @ DEMF) Thanks in advance. Re: [313] Track ID (kind of)
I know it's an old PA Presents track that was getting a lot of play in 1995, but I don't know any of the details (label, EP/track name, etc - the track itself may actually be called PA Presents, but I'm not 100% certain of this). It has a single repeating (piano?) chord hammering away over a drum track, and a high pitched analog sound that comes in about halfway through and oscillates a bit before hitting a really high pitch and holding there. I've been wanting to track this down for years... Thanks in advance!

[313] O.T. Email tax..Bill 602P......
This isnt related to Techno soap operas ...But quite related to the list.. The federal government is trying to get money for e-mail... Please pass onto anyone interested. VOTE NO ON Bill 602P Guess the warnings were true. Federal Bill 602P 5-cents per E-mail sent. It figures! No more free E-mail! We knew this was coming!! Bill 602P will permit the Federal Government to charge a 5-cent charge on every delivered E-mail. Please read the following carefully if you intend to stay online and continue using E-mail. The last few months have revealed an alarming trend in the Government of the United States attempting to quietly push through legislation that will affect our use of the Internet. Under proposed legislation, the US Postal Service will be attempting to bill E-mail users out of alternative postage fees Bill 602P will permit the Federal Government to charge a 5-cent surcharge on every E-Mail delivered, by billing Internet Service Providers at source. The consumer would then be billed in turn by the ISP. Washington DC lawyer Richard Stepp is working without pay to prevent this legislation from becoming law. The US Postal Service is claiming lost revenue, due to the proliferation of E-mail, is costing nearly $230,000,000 in revenue per year. You may have noticed their recent ad campaign: There is nothing like a letter. Since the average person received about 10 pieces of E-mail per day in 1998, the cost of the typical individual would be an additional 50 cents a day - or over $180 per year - above and beyond their regular Internet costs. Note that this would be money paid directly to the US Postal Service for a service they do not even provide. The whole point of the Internet is democracy and non-interference. You are already paying an exorbitant price for snail mail because of bureaucratic efficiency. It currently takes up to 6 days for a letter to be delivered from coast to coast. If the US Postal Service is allowed to tinker with E-mail, it will mark the end of the free Internet in the United States. Our congressional representative, Tony Schnell (R) has even suggested a $20-$40 per month surcharge on all Internet service above and beyond the governments proposed E-mail charges. Note that most of the major newspapers have ignored the story the only exception being the Washingtonian which called the idea of E-mail surcharge a useful concept who's time has come (March 6th, 1999 Editorial). GENERATION4 - QUALITY MUSIC IS SURVIVING IN THE UK!!
Hi, I'm normally just a quiet observer of 313, but thought I'd just let you all know about the Generation4 Soundsystem (part of Child Genius Recordings) which is doing its first ever performance this friday at the ICA, on The Mall, London. The event (Hyperdub) starts at 7, but Generation4 will be playing at around 9 pm. While many people here in London know the scene is far from being as good as it should be, there are pockets of enthusiasm and talent that I think we all believe are building up some kind of pressure against the mass commercialisation that we're seeing going on around us. The good shit needs to be found... People in London, come down and support...this is young talent. Worldwide crew: remember the name... That's exactly what the t-shirt means. I remember punks who used to wear swastikas... not because they believed in Nazi ideology but because it flew in the face of society's norms. I think it's a context thing: the same rage that fuelled the MC5 Iggy The Stooges to react with extreme sonic violence against the white-bread conformity of their culture, made that t-shirt a rebellious gesture. Sort of proto-punk, 1973-style I'm So Bored With the USA (remember Bangs toured with The Clash). Bangs, like Lou Reed Iggy, was one of the first punks. You'd have to ask Oscar-winner Cameron Crowe for the real lowdown, but that's my take. The shirt isn't anti-Detroit music or bands, but just the opposite: anti-society, anti-'roll over like a good puppy' consumerism, anti-mindless complaceny...the Bangs equivalent to Search Destroy. He's siding with Stooges in their war against normalcy. Bangs was a great rock writer, but not infallible. Has anyone ever read the notorious hatchet-job he did on Kraftwerk? I think he heard saw the future couldn't handle it. He started having nightmares about robots technoid automatons taking over the world. Maybe the car-building robots of the Detroit auto factories haunted him he saw The Stooge's maniacal rock 'n roll energy gloriously undisciplined approach as the antidote to regimented beats. Before you dis Moby....
I can honestly say that I do not know much about Moby's music, but his last interview in a recent URB definately caught my eye. Check out these quotes. The first one was a responce on what he thought of Hip Hop now and then: ...And at that time there was so much great house music and techno being made, so in the early 90's I didn't pay attention to it at all...why when I can go listen to Derrick May, why would I want to listen to N.W.A.? Believe it or not, even though he is mainstream, he was still influenced by the Detroit pioneers. To be honest, I dont think it will be a horrible thingif he gets booked. He will attract a lot of people, maybe even more out of towners, and i doubt that they will show up for his set and leave, refusing to expose themselves to that 313 stuff. I mean last year on the main stage on the last night, the line up was Kevin Saunderson, Rolando, Derrick May, and Richie Hawtin. How can you ever expect to come close to that every year without rehashing the same lineup? Re: [313] Before you dis Moby....
Ok, You've all had a great laugh at Moby, and man I bet he's just crying. None of you know the man, most of you have never seen his face other than on T.V. So what do you know about him? What he feeds to the media? Let's print off everything aybody ever says on this list and hold them to it for the rest of their lives. Get off your horse! People change. I've gone through so many musical shifts in my lifetime it's uncanny, and I'm sure the whole lot of you grew up with techno too right? Please. Take away the definition of the artist, take away the words and the interviews, the commercials and the movies. They are all just money making schemes of the music industry. Now listen to the music. Just the music. Is it all that bad? Can you not feel some emotion emanating from it? RE: White boy stole gospel samples and makes mockery of oppression. This is a load of crap, with all the makings of bad religous overtones and racism galore. It's funny, in the cd copy of 'Play' I have beside me now all the samples are acknowledged in the liner notes and moreover the songs capture a playful nature with subtle longing underneath. Make of this what you will but it seems to connect in a lot of ways. I first heard 'Porcelain' in a commercial for Bailey's Irish Cream. I first heard several other tracks on the album while watching 'The Beach. I liked these songs, and I didn't know who the artist was. Moreover I still don't care that it was Moby, it's good music. I don't usually feel this compelled to stick up for anybody, but jeez, you would love to think that Moby is a narrow minded prick. Maybe it's all of you who can't get past the media surrounding him, or the fact that he's using his music to make himself some cash (God forbid and artist use his/her work to make money). A good foil for this would be Mr. Hawtin, who despite not saying much to the media has fed you all the biggest lie: DEFX909. It's a great recording, but contains nothing that you all hold so dear about it ie. it's mixed by a computer (pro tools), and there is no FX and no 909. It's all a lie and you've let yourselves be taken. Rich too is trying to grab some cash while he can, he knows techno won't be fresh forever and that being a professional DJ isn't a lifelong career. He has simply taken a different route to the same goal; cash grab. Techno has pigeon holed itself as I predicted it would back in 93. Back then so much more was acceptable, it wasn't as defined and made producing techno for Moby much more interesting. Since techno has been overdefined by the headz and the critics, Moby no longer fits the mold. He wants to go play in other fields as well. Rich is going to suck techno dry. He had to play last at DEMF last year though Derrick deserved it more than anyone else. He couldn't be recorded because he knows he's a limited commodity. Re: [313] love parade info
actually they say that the 13th or 15th are not acceptable for them as an alternative. by law the other group would have the right to do their demo as they were first with reserving this date. but the organisers of the parade and also the city officials don't want to accept this and, well, as the parade weekend brings the city of berlin approx. 20 miliion marks of tax income you can be pretty sure that it will be on july 14. peter - Original Message - From: Kevin Conrad [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, March 27, 2001 10:25 PM Subject: Re: [313] LOVE PARADE: info needed IMMEDIATELY!!! : There's a tab where you can change the site to : english. My trip to London that's coming up (30 March - 10 April) has now come to encompass Holland, because I desperately want to see Speedy J live! I'll be in Amsterdam on 4 April and then Rotterdam sometime around 5 April and definitely for the Hawtin/Acquaviva/Speedy J gig on 6 April and then I fly back to Britain on 7 April, Saturday morning. If anyone wants to meet up to attend the gig with me, I'd love to meet you, as I don't know anyone there (though I do have evil plans of convincing youth hostel cohabitants into consuming the treacherous beats with me... bwaahahh!). Also, any record shop/fun-things-to-do advice would be very helpful. I am very interested in visiting the Clone Records shop as well as checking out any electro/techno that may be happening during that time (same for London-area goes, too). I promise to stay put for the rest of April, at least, and stop asking for your advice every day. ;) (so what's happening in Sri Lanka on Tuesday?) peace, Dave David Knapik - Web Developer Northwestern University School of Law - MC B71 (312) 503-2771 | mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
