brinkmann opens the can of worms

2001-04-04 Thread Philip Sherburne
I think this is my post to 313, so I'd better step carefully. But I'm
surprised, in all this talk of appropriation across the color lines of
musical tradition, that no-one's mentioned Thomas Brinkmann's Soul Center
projects (apologies if they have, and I missed the posts). A German
producer best known for starkly minimalist techno (at its most reduced, it's
simply a dub-techno form constructed out of samples from runout grooves and
physically lacerated vinyl), his Soul Center records heavily sample Motown,
Stax and other classic soul recordings. The form largely follows the clicky
house structures of his other work, but the tone color's totally different.
At the same time, he gives props and recognition to his predecessors and
sources, largely effacing his own role: his own name appears nowhere on the
records, while he includes a long list of those that inspired him.

There are plenty of interesting issues going on here; the ownership of a
particular tradition (for instance, what constitutes black music, and what
does the race of the producer have to do with the tradition? 2000 Black
posits their music in the black musical tradition, and yet it's a
multiracial crew involved in those recordings), the nature of appropriation
and authorship, the curious German fascination with African-American music
and culture. Atom Heart's Geeez'n'Gosh project works in very similar
terrain.

I've been thinking a lot about these things because I'm working on an
article about (mostly German) microhouse--labels like Perlon, Playhouse,
Kompakt--and I found there was no way to really talk about the music without
addressing the race issues.

Anyway, for what it's worth. I don't mean to stir up the debate, but perhaps
these issues will spark some other interesting ideas.

Cheers,
Philip

There are plenty of interesting issues going on here; the ownership of a
particular tradition (for instance, what constitutes black music, and
what
does the race of the producer have to do with the tradition? 2000 Black
posits their music in the black musical tradition, and yet it's a
multiracial crew involved in those recordings), the nature of
appropriation
and authorship, the curious German fascination with African-American music
and culture. Atom Heart's Geeez'n'Gosh project works in very similar
 terrain.

This is an angle that interests me, and may bring the rest of these threads
together into one. As Diana said, we're talking about a few different things
right now, and only some of them are really topical. Laura, Otto, Johnny and
Philip have persuaded me that this part of it is not only topical, but
important - even if we've convered most of this ground before.

Your question about Brinkmann reminds me of The Wonderful/Horrible Life of
Leni Reinestahl, which is a documentary on her life. She was the Nazi
documentarian under Hitler. She made films like Triumph of the Spirit and
Olympia I+II, which are widely regarded as some of the most effective
propoganda films ever. Very subtle, and ever-so manipulative of the German
psyche at that time. You've probably seen footage from these films if you've
ever seen footage of the 1936 olympics, or extensive footage of Hitler. I
hope I don't have to spend my time disclaiming that I in no way endorse
Nazism, but I've studied her films in film school, and I'm very interested
in the phenomenon of Nazi Germany and how such an attrocious ideology could
come take hold of the German psyche. At any rate, she later denounced her
Nazi ties (a topic which can fill a book on its own), and in the 50's or
60's made a documentary on the Nuba (sp?), an African tribe with very little
if anything documented on them to that point. The documentary on her spends
a lot of time trying to reduce the effort to an extension of the Nazi cult
of the body, while it seemed to me like an open, genuine investigation of
their beliefs, rituals and way of life. If I recall, she spent years with
them.

So my point is that I think the German fascination with African and
Afro-[insert nationality] culture has been around for a while, and can be
found in the most seemingly unlikely places. The movie talks about it quite
a bit. For that matter, I've noticed that pretty much any nationality of
white Europeans seem to be more receptive to Motown, Funk, Jazz, Reggae/Dub,
House/Techno and R+B than their American counterparts. You could very
easilly chalk this up to the influence of corporate radio/MTV and major
labels who have managed to convince the majority of white and black American
music buyers that black music is for black people and white music is for
white people, with the exception of rap. It seems to me there's no racist
agenda on the part of these companies, but there's a stratifying effect from
their marketing engines. Most of these companies don't care what the hell
happens one way or the other as long as they can make money. That seems to
me why rap is marketed to everyone - because it sells. I don't think in this
day and age they are intentionally trying to enforce a racist ideology.
But as Johnny, Otto and Laura were saying, there is an undisputed effect of
holding back African American artists when it comes to Detroit Techno, and
some other supposedly white forms of music. I think they are *absolutely*
complicit in this - but I also think it's important to understand the
mechanics behind their decisions. This is an effect of stagnation in their
marketing departments, and that's how it's always been. If by fluke or
brilliant marketing coup, Detroit techno started really blowing up, I wager
there would be a deluge of African American techno from every one of the 5
major labels. This is because their marketing departments are 100%
reactionary. How often do you see trully innovative music *from a new
artist* debuting in pop charts? Never. This is because they don't take
chances. I think this is deplorable, and the effect is discriminatory,
particularly for African American electronic music producers.

So that's one issue we've been discussing, but there's also this whole issue
of appropriators and how they contribute to the problem. I'm surprised no
one's mentioned Tosca's Opera album while we're on the topic. Every time I
get involved in an M word debate with a non-electonic music listening
friend, I tell them to listen to that album. They both use samples
extensively, but Dorfmeister and Huber don't simply build soul-less music
around a catchy African American sample - they create a coherent whole,
synthesizing multinational elements along the way - and they've always done
that. I think what Wes was

2001-04-04 Thread Kent williams
Well Tristan definitely posted something very thoughtful.

I have a simpler take on Soul Center -- it kicks ass.
I drop that record and people go off.

The sampling of black music on those records quotes as an homage,
and the way he cuts and arranges brings something new to old music.
It's straight up tight soul music, and Brinkmann definitely brings
a lot of that soul to the table.

I never met a black DJ who wouldn't play a good record by a white
producer. In fact, I'd say black musicians, in general, think about
the music before skin color. Charlie Parker, a very angry, proud
black man played with white people all the time.

For the true musicians, whatever color, it's about who's a
head and who isn't. Which is NOT to say that there isn't anger
and racism in the world, or that white people aren't ripping
off black people. It just means that if you care about music
deeply, you see Igor Stravinsky and Jeff Mills, not a Russian
and a black man. What they do is way beyond
all the petty tribalism and xenophobia. And if you're really
listening to what they're playing they can take you beyond with
them.

Ryan,

I think you'd really like some of his earlier stuff if you can find it. I
have an EP on 21/22 corp that has an excellent track by him as CrO2. That's
long out of print though. His Of the Essence on Metamorphik is more
recent, but great too. These two tracks are towards the end of my New and
Old and Bang mixes on my site if you're interested in hearing them.

For me, I'm kind of hit or miss with his releases. Some of it is a bit too
much along the lines of quirkier Dan Curtin. I tend to prefer his more
straight-forward work when I'm spinning, but it's all good to listen to. His
betalounge set has really made me curious about the new stuff. I'm sure it's
top notch.

Just noticed this in a post and it reminded me of deep dish and how they

of analog synths - anyway my point is this:

I still think of synth pop/electronic as futuristic music and analog synths
as futuristic synthesizers. It might be yesterdays fashion or technology - but
todays technology and fashion is generally less futuristic. A high-tech synth
that does a great job of sounding like a centuries old instrument is not
terribly

futuristic to me. I dont think we need to call it retro futurism, its still
the music of tommorow.

A cheesy 70's scifi synth sound is far more modern than the guitars of the
current
bands. Bring on the exploration of sounds, even if some ppl think it sounds
out of fashion.

I'm sure it's
top notch.

my 3 South African cents on the techno/race issue (and that's less than half a US cent)

2001-04-04 Thread Evan Rice

I've followed this debate for the last couple of days with interest
(although I have to admit that I never intended on becoming embroiled in
such matters when I signed up to the list for reasons of musical interest),
because clearly it is a topic of integral importance to the techno movement.
Coming from South Africa, a country with as racially divided a past as any,
I feel that I have a couple of points that may be worth a mention here.

Firstly, the issues that are raised in this debate are larger societal
problems not limited to techno or even music as a whole, but any forum that
provides an opportunity raise awareness should be used!

On the issue of people getting signed to major labels, the record industry
(major labels) has always been much more interested in money than in giving
due credit or financial reward to the people who are responsible for the
music in the first place. It's a capitalist game, and the reality of the
situation is that it is controlled by a few very wealthy white people. A
case in point is a local group Ladysmith Black Mambazo (definitely not
techno but a case in point for this example), who have sold hundreds of
thousands of copies of records worldwide over the last 25 years and have
seen virtually no reward for it.

The whole Napster issue highlighted that most of those artists who do get
signed to major labels don't get to see the proceeds of the work anyway. In
this consumer driven society that we find ourselves in, record companies
merely need to find one or two radio friendly artists to market to the
public to reap huge returns. Such a small minority benefit, and factors such
as racism compound this problem, particularly in the choice of who gets
signed and marketed, but I would have to question whether, even given the
opportunity, may/mills/saunderson/any number of notable others would want
to be associated with that corporate money-grabbing anyway, as it would
essentially equate to being a lottery winner celebrating his windfall and
sudden rise from poverty as some kind of fundamental change for society as a
whole! Still, that doesn't change the fact that it's inherently unfair and
is something that needs to be redressed!

And about artists not giving credit where it's due, (imho) RESPECT is just
about the most important thing in life, and those artists who don't pay the
necessary dues only serve to further alienate themselves from the rest of
the artistic community. If it's done with financial reward as the main
reason, even mores the pity! Everyone involved is entitled to make as much
of a stink as they like about them and, above all, it's their choice and
right not to support them. Not long ago (I was there for a year in 1999),
the vast majority of the US population regarded any form of electronic music
as techno, and they are the ones who view Moby as the US techno saviour.
Those more educated and dedicated to the scene and to what it stands for DO
give credit where it is due be it black, white, whatever (Hardfloor's
Respect as an example), and are committed to keeping moving forward. And we
shouldn't forget to focus on the positives too as examples of what should be
done!

My personal thanks and respect goes out to the founding gurus of this music
that gives me and plenty others so much joy, and to everyone involved at all
levels in keeping it moving forward! Everything you do makes a difference.
It all depends on how much of a difference you care to make!

And big up to everyone for raising the issues and encouraging discussion.
Education! It is only through history, sharing our ideas and debating issues
that we are able to develop and reinforce our ideas on what is right and
wrong, and what needs to change and how it can be done. That's what
direction and focus are born out of!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Schranz refers to artists such as
Chris Liebing, Andreas Kremer, and the like. The really hard, minimal,
techno, that is usually abhorred by the list. Chris Liebing even has a
series of 7 called (the) Real Schranz.

Personally, I think that type of techno is a necessary evil in a good
techno set. I rather enjoy the stuff of that caliber. Most will disagree
with me.

RYTHIM IS RYTHIM - Strings O Life (1987) Without doubt May's best known

When they killed him, they destroyed the hopes and dreams of a generation.
It was about the hope in his message.

I noticed the track listing is different on the planet e release than on the

specifically the 4 hero track is not on the planet e.

something more dollars for the import cd just to get the 4 hero and the few
other tracks only on the import?

Hi there,

the other week i picked up the new planet e double.
 its got a track buy
 Titonton thats tight.
I was just wondering what other tracks people like
 from him. hes got some
stuff on Residual and a double called Voyeurism (i
 think).
One day i overheard kent williams talking about how
 Titonton was more of a
composer and was taught music theory.
i havent seen his new cd yet. is it something thats
 going to be pressed on
 wax.

The Selections for Intercourse CD and LP is coming
out on April 9th. The LP has 8 trakcs and the CD has
13 (and is a lot more forward thinking).

Titonton released his first vinyl EP entitled
Embryonic on Metamorphic in 1995. He has been featured
on 21 releases to date and is currently djing and
performing live about the US...

he is appearing at Motor on the 7th...

i have the remixes of Voyerism on Starbaby. Can't
 remember what tracks
and remixes there was, and by whom. Anyway, good
 12.

Remixes by Stefan Manceau/Christophe Bouthé/Jymmy Dark
and Rue East... It also has the original version of
Boudoir on it...

 I also like that
 Extrapolation remixes 12 on Metamorphic - it's
 quite nice. Although,
once again, can't remember who did the remixes, it's
 a bit electro-y
stuff, but not the current retro-80's or
 detroit-electro -styles. More
like electro in Metamorphic way, ie it's really
 weird.

2 remixes by Dan Curtin which are the electro ones and
one by Dego on the d'n'b tip (obviously). The original
version of Extrapolation is featured on the Endorphin
Ep. The Dego remix is also featured on that:)

Yes, Titonton deserves a LOT more attention and respect.

I'm glad to see his name all over the list today -- I had been
planning to do a feature on him for a long time now (since the
Exordium party in Columbus!), but my time ain't what it used to be ...

I highly recommend Voyeurism ... it's an amazing encapsulation of
his composition skills, but more than that, his energy!

Normally im pretty relaxed about remixes of classics..
But Naima is pretty untouchable as it currently exists IMO.
Sounds like a BIG task to make a worthwhile remix of that track! Its perfect
already!
A bunch of Naima covers? That makes me feel slightly queasy... :(

Lot of Cds and some vinyls. Ask for Sylvain or Bertrand (the

beware though, FNAC shops are the most expensive places in Paris to buy

Boo Williams going deep, Morgan Geist doing a great liveset and Rob Hood

sun ra at demf

2001-04-04 Thread diana potts
I wrote this short thing for citysearch.com but I
didn't include sun ra-they did.

The Scene
This year, the DEMF artist roster reads more like a
compilation record: including Kid Koala, De La Soul,
Derrick May , Sun Ra and His Arkestra, Tortoise,
Autechre and more. Although the stars of electronica
will be fully represented, the producers have made
room for some adjacent genres. All the talent, upwards
of 70 acts, will be performing free, on four stages in
downtown's Hart Plaza. The beautiful park has been the
setting for music events like the Ford International
Jazz Festival, formerly known as Montreux
International Jazz Festival, for decades and is well
suited for multiple concerts of loud volume. This
year's festival will surely bring together a large and
diverse crowd. Rumor has it that MTV may cover the
event.

The History
Last year, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival made
a lasting impression on the city of Detroit. Thrown in
conjunction with the city, Pop Culture Media, and
musician Carl Craig; the three-day free festival
brought together some of Detroit's most famous and
upcoming talent along side larger, national acts such
as The Roots and DJ Spooky. It was estimated that 1.5
million people came together in Detroit for the
festival's debut.

A night of German electronic music (aka techno) would kill a night of

BPitch Control
Shitkatapult
Kompakt

Mille Plateaux
Playhouse
Kanzleramp

In fact I bet that a strong argument can be made that Detroit has lost
the spotlight for innovative new music which now is sourced from
Germany. Of course on a per capita basis Detroit of one million people
still kicks Germany's 80 million people's ass.

Oh and it should be noted that these labels are constantly releasing

I'm pretty sure this is a 313 house record - male voice saying, black
dialect
is an expressive, vivid, living language - we reject it - how little have
we

gained and how much have we lost. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Hey sorry if my statements sounded demeaning to good people. I didnt mean
for that.

When someone says the word revolutio, it doesn't really include any of the
good work done on the issue. I and I think Carl Craig refers to
reolutionaries. Revolutionaries, as you recall from the french revolution
against monarchy, are people who fight against their oppressor. My question
to the group is, how is a bigot differentiated from others. Now remember
this. If a revolution were to go down at the DEMF for instance. How will
the revolutionaries know who to fight against? There are no uniforms
involved... I mean maybe they could go up against the skinheads or
something? But, working down in river rouge and being called a bigot a few
times because I am white, I have a hunch that I would be a target to an
anti-bigot revolutionary. The thing is, I do not consider myself a bigot...
Does anyone see where I'm coming from here?

It seems like Carl Craig is on the racial revolution bandwagon
nowadays too. Listen
to the end of his more songs abot food.. album and there is an
interestingly devilish
sounding voice warning us of a revolution against bigotry. My
question is, to the
group, how does he and other revolutionaries plan to decipher bigots
from the rest
of us?Bigots come in all colors, so color differentiation is not
an option...
Atleast this enigma would pop into the head of any revolutionary who
had atleast
   some brains...Do you agree?

Re: [313] the good good (was:Titonton)

2001-04-04 Thread Matt MacQueen
I noticed the track listing is different on the
planet e release than on the 2000 black release
specifically the 4 hero track is not on the planet e.

Are you talking about the 4Hero cover of John
Coltrane's Naima? This isn't available as a single
unfortunately (as far as i know). I've heard that a
bunch of Naima covers will be appearing on Laws of
Motion soon... It might already be out actually so I
the 4Hero mix MIGHT be on there...

That's too bad they didn't put 4 Hero's cover of Coltrane's Namia
on the Planet E version of the comp. I frankly think it's one of
the best cuts on the whole comp! Great percussion and they kept
the best sax line. I especially love how it ends, it's really
tight. I don't know if I'd recommend that people go buy the
import version on 2000 Black just for this one track, but it's
reallly good and worth hearing if you haven't.

Good point about it maybe appearing on Laws of Motion? SPeaking
of, anyone heard the Modaji full album on Laws of Motion? The
Modaji downtempo track on the Laws of Motion 2xLP compilation is
my favorite track on that whole comp, really sparkling and
atmospheric/deep. OVerall that comp is pretty strong, I recommend
it if you're into the W. London thing. Wish more of these guys
were coming to DEMF... though it's awesome that Mark
deClive-lowe will be there. He's played keys on a lot of tracks
coming outta that whole camp (People, Bitasweet, etc.) and I
think he plays some of the the stuff by Seiji and B.B. Boogie?

Re: [313] my 3 South African cents on the techno/race issue (and that's less than half a US cent)

2001-04-04 Thread laura gavoor

Thanks for the objective voice Evan.

It is surprising how many peeps separate music from culture and society at
large. Having been in this culture for longer than I care to admit here,
I've seen its effects on society at large which on the whole have been
holistically positive. It only takes one joker to unravel the mystique and
be used as a poster child (voodoo child) to nudge the whole consensus toward
mass consumerism and strictly party hype without the passion of hope or
utopian/otherworldly imagination even a consideration.

Moreover, the factor of history and truth have extreme relevance. There are
multitudes of people in America who know absolutely nothing about Juan
Atkins, but they sure know Moby strictly on the hype tip. Hopefully he'll
peak, make his monay and recede back into the general weave of the fabric.

Something tells me, however, that he will be a stand out historically
superceding anyone that came before based solely on sales and numbers.

Most Americans are quite content to allow doctors, lawyers and MBAs (masters
of business administration...the nouveau vermin of American society) and
finally politicians to step in and create control factors, rewrite history
and generally develop their appetites for them. It speaks to the fact that
most Americans have the literacy rate of a 10 year old child.

It's most frustrating, really. How does one instill a thirst for knowledge
and truth?

Subject: [313] my 3 South African cents on the techno/race issue (and
that's less than half a US cent)

Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 14:40:30 +0200

I've followed this debate for the last couple of days with interest
(although I have to admit that I never intended on becoming embroiled in
such matters when I signed up to the list for reasons of musical interest),
because clearly it is a topic of integral importance to the techno
movement.

Such a small minority benefit, and factors
such

as racism compound this problem, particularly in the choice of who gets
signed and marketed, but I would have to question whether, even given the
opportunity, may/mills/saunderson/any number of notable others would want
to be associated with that corporate money-grabbing anyway, as it would
essentially equate to being a lottery winner celebrating his windfall and
sudden rise from poverty as some kind of fundamental change for society as
a

Not long ago (I was there for a year in 1999),
the vast majority of the US population regarded any form of electronic
music

as techno, and they are the ones who view Moby as the US techno saviour.
Those more educated and dedicated to the scene and to what it stands for DO
give credit where it is due be it black, white, whatever (Hardfloor's
Respect as an example), and are committed to keeping moving forward. And we
shouldn't forget to focus on the positives too as examples of what should
be

done!

My personal thanks and respect goes out to the founding gurus of this music
that gives me and plenty others so much joy, and to everyone involved at
all
