The Prefuse 73 album Vocal Studies Uprock Narratives on Warp is also very good. Lots of crazy sliced up vocals and downtempo hip hop with elements of glitch. Scott Herron must be one busy (and talented) dude because equally as good are his other projects: Savath + Savalas (great album Folk Songs for Trains...) and Delarosa and Asora (my favourite. Check Agony LP and Backsome EP) . RE: [313] Sabres of Paradise (was: Some cds I ordered, what next )
Make you sure you check out the rest of the Vladislav Delay output for more on the ambient dubbed tip (sometimes he gets a bit noisy, mostly in his earlier work), his Luomo guise on Force Trax is sublime house unlike anything you've heard before. I am also very interested to hear his techno guise , Uusitallo (sp?), also on Force Trax. Anima, his most recent, is utterly beautiful. The majority of the Uusitalo album on Force Inc. is actually very similar to his Luomo stuff with some beatless tracks as well. I'd recommend getting this on CD where the tracks are all mixed to create a live set. If you like your beats housey, and your dubbing minimal, check Perlon. If you like things to get a little more experimental check out Kompakte and the affiliated labels. Isolee on Playhouse also gets a bit quirkier. Also makes sure to explore all the rest of the Basic Channel affiliates like Rhythm Sound, Main Street Records, DIN and a few others (it's early). I'll just add a couple of newer labels: Vibrant Music (I'm fairly certain this is a CR offshoot - anyone?) and Trapez - probably my favourite label at the moment. Finally, someone rightfully mentioned ~Scape - if you don't have Jan Jelinek's album then you are missing out on the masterpiece of this genre IMHO. Respect JasonB

I love his live ambience too, but I think it's better suited to the context of his live sets, where he really shines IMO. I wish he'd release a live CD. His betalounge set from October is still doing it for me, especially the 2nd half of it once he gets through the noise. Seeing him live on the Formless Form tour was a real treat. For more of a beat treatment from these two, check out the Revenge of the Nerds set at http://www.monolake.de which is the two of them live. RE: [313] what is electro, now s.o.l.?
Call it Crème Brule. Whatever the artist said, it sounds like house music to me. Juan however, was calling his new music techno, and making this music without acoustic emulations or samples of pianos, strings and house beats. Of course, to many contemporaries, it was a new electro sound. Like I said before, categories/labels are arbitrary, and don't really belong in music. That's why we have names to go by. Apples and oranges I suppose. -Original Message- From: Benn Glazier [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 18, 2001 9:10 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject:RE: [313] what is electro, now s.o.l.? all those who dont see whats techno about Strings of Life? please form a line before the firing squad. Detroit techno comes on so many flavors and draws from so many inspirations that it's impossible to define it with any one sound or any one artist (hell, even that one artists work will jump numerous genres in the space of one album). so when does a techno artist cross that line and is considered to be no longer in the techno realm? Look at the Detroit 11 Phases compilation on Sublime. there are a few tracks on there that I feel would not be out of place on a traditional Detroit techno album. sean -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 18, 2001 9:33 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] what is electro, now s.o.l.? RE: [313] what is electro, now s.o.l.?
I agree. Detroit Techno swings from one one extreme to another and occasionally crosses a boundary or two. A track like Sean Deason's own Freq2 is considered Detroit Techno, The Bells is considered Detroit, and Salsa Life is as well. Each of these sounds totally different, yet are all considered Detroit Techno. Strings of Life is Detroit Techno, plain and simple. If you caught my performance at my party, you partially know what to expect...but I'll have my full dub studio in effect during these upcoming gigs so it will be even deeper than before. If you didn't catch it, I think you'll like what I have to offer assuming you're into the dubbed-out glitchy deep techno sound of Detroit/Berlin. KIRK DEGIORGIO (aka Off World Ensemble and As One) ( Ubiquity-singles,remixes and LP due in June; Mo' Wax-LPand remixes, Clear Recordings-LPsingles; Talkin' Loud-remixes only- ) This gifted veteran producer will be playing a rare NYC DJ set with his unique blend of breakbeat, soul, and organicfuturejazz. Don't miss your chance to hear one of the world's most innovative electronic/dance producers Its going to be something truly fresh and original. * Kirk will be spinning from 12midnite to 1:30am * HERE'S HIS BIO AND MORE INFO... Kirk Degiorgio is one of the most sought-after mixers/producers in today's eclectic dance music scene. Steering away from musical cliches and sticking to his soul-boy roots, he has managed to maintain his musical integrity over 8 years and 5 albums. In 1999 Kirk started work on a new musical project, which will finally see completion and full length release on Ubiquity in late 2001 under the name As One. Ubiquity will release the As One Another Revolution 10 in June 2001, and the 21st Century Soul album in the late Fall. While working on this new album Degiorgio has completed critically acclaimed remixes for 4 Hero, Beanfield, Azymuth, Tony Allen, and even the Newcleus classic Jam On Revenge. He recently released a mixed CD called The Soul of Science (Obsessive Records) featuring unreleased Herbie Hancock soundtrack material, future jazz, and classic soul. Degiorgio currently uses As One, Elegy, Esoterik, Critical Phase, Family Values, Super-A-Loof (with Jamie Odell), and The Off World Ensemble as recording aliases. He has also established himself as a club DJ /radio personality in London, where he regularly hosts the R Solution show on Kiss FM. Degiorgio was raised in Ipswich, England, a town also once home to experimental producers like Photek, Patrick Forge (Da Lata), and members of The Black Dog. In 1992 Degiorgio recorded his first release on B12 Records. Shortly after this debut he founded the ART label releasing early material by artists such as Carl Craig, Aphex Twin, and The Black Dog. Degiorgio recorded material under the names As One and Future/Past for ART, Planet E and RS before signing As One to New Electronica for the albums Reflections and Celestial Soul, which both made the Muzik Top 30 albums for 1994/5. Further albums for Clear (UK) and Shield (France) eventually secured Kirk's reputation as a producer with a unique, individual sound, often incorporating jazz, soul, and funk elements into electronic tracks. Degiorgio's sound, as to be heard on the upcoming As One album, is warm techno with real soul and often based outside of the constraints of the straight 4/4 beat. His style can be partly traced to his main musical influences: P-Funk, Motown, early hip hop, Detroit techno, and mid-60's Blue Note. Degiorgio's pioneering approach led to his first major release in 1997 for the Mo' Wax label, for whom he also remixed the Carl Craig classic BugInTheBassBin. The Planetory Folklore album on Mo' Wax was a great commercial and artistic success which together with several hi-profile TV ad soundtracks gave Degiorgio a wider exposure. Infact his success as a composer of soundtrack/advertising material (he's completed work for Adidas, Fanta, Michelen, and Microsoft) has given him the freedom to take other musical experimentations to new heights. For a (massive) full discography, plus info on Kirk Degiorgio, his favourite tracks, and a guide to the recordings of Sun Ra and Blue Note see www.kirkdegiorgio.com __ Joining Kirk on this THURSDAY at OPENAIR are two other very special guests... FABRIZIO(IRMA Records, Melting Pot) TOMMY'Smokes'TODISCO(Turning Point, Melting Pot) Fabrizio has been DJ'ing in NYC for the past 10 years, settling here after growing up in Italy. Tommy Smokes Todisco has been DJ'ing for over 15 years in the finest Italian and NYC clubs. His recent Friday night set on the main floor at Centro Fly was a refreshing mix of deep soulful breaks and various styles of house. He had the club bumpin' and it will work for you too... * Fabrizio and Tommy will be gracing the decks from 1:30am - 3am * Opening the night with a fun early crowd is SWINGSETT (ism, Esho, Ubiquity,

I'll just add a couple of newer labels: Vibrant Music (I'm fairly certain this is a CR offshoot - anyone?) and Trapez - probably my favourite label at the moment. As far as I know Vibrant Music is run by Fluxion, so I guess it is CR related. yes, vibrant music is run by fluxion. it has the same publishing company as chain reaction (bcp), so there is the connection to the rest of the camp. ines -- http://www.circonium.de/

T Shirt Finale
Hi everyone, Well all the votes have been counted and recounted. Thanks to Roberto, Tim, and Mike for helping out with that. We had two designs that pretty much got the majority of the attention from the list. Actually the vote swung several times between the two. I know several of you said it was a difficult choice to pick between them. So the race was really between C and D or if your memory is a little fuzzy, the 'record case' vs. the 'ren cen'. Last sunday as I reviewed my totals and got some of the other numbers in, it was clear that we didn't have one landslide winner, but two close contenders. I had an idea, and spoke to Mike at Recordtime yesterday and we both agreed that the two designs were very different and unique. So instead of limiting the choice to one winner, both C and D will be produced. Both the designers have already been contacted and given the news. Congratulations got out to both of them. C (the record case)was designed by Chris who posts as [EMAIL PROTECTED] And the designer of D (with a nod to UR) is going to remain anonymous. Again both of them will be sporting free shirts for their efforts. So what happens from here, well I have gotten some questions about price, availability, and ordering. As far as price goes, I am talking with Mike at Recordtime about that and some of it will depend on the initial order. I am already in the process of getting quotes from printers together. For now it looks like we should be able to have them at RT around the second week of May, maybe a little sooner. I'd like to personally thank Mike for being interested in this project and helping out. As always if any of you have any questions you can email me privately but I really can't provide a lot of specific details at this point. As soon as more news piles up I will post another update. Thanks again to everyone, dave

Live shows...
My last post reminded me of something... I've seen a few live performances in the last few years, the most impressive of which was Ectomorph's at Solar (The Blind Pig) a couple of years ago. I've noticed, these days, that more than a few cats are bringing out laptops and 2 or 3 pieces of gear and running their music from it. People have told me that seeing Plastikman live was a billy bad assed show, but I've never seen it. I saw Richie run his DE909 show on New Years Eve 1999/2000 and though it was cool but still expected something better. What I'm really looking to get is some feedback: Do you prefer the Ectomorph/Plastikman type of live show or the Laptop/sampler/keyboard type of thing and why?
RE: [313] what is electro, now s.o.l.?
I hear you ... but I thought we were helping out a newbie of sorts. Re: [313] Live shows...
From a performance standpoint, I think you'll be seeing a lot more laptops at live shows (Ectomorph used one in NYC a few weeks back) and I don't see a problem with it. You can much more power in one laptop than lugging a whole bunch of analog gear around. We just did a show in NYC last weekend and flew in on Northwest from Detroit. It looks like my friend's Juno 106 became the victim of the gorilla in one of the Samsonite commercials.the pitch wheel was completely destroyed, and several sliders were broken completely off. I'd rather carry on my laptop and have the promoter lease anything you may need. Okay, ultiamtely, I like to think of techno and house as more of adjitives (sp?) then categories, but I think that though the two can be VERY similar, I think that if you must use them as genres, there is a difference. I think that the main difference is in the feeling behind a track. House tends to be a bit more happyier, more optimistic, etc. I often tease my househead friends by saying that every single house song has the theme everything is going to be alright. But ultimately, I think that house is more centered on upbeat optimisim. Techno, on the other hand has a different feeling to it. I think the best discription I have ever heard of techno was dark, but celebratory. Techno can be dark, at times even angry, while other times quite happy, and almost alyways energetic. Take for example Waveform Transmissions Vol. 1 by Jeff Mills. Phase 4 is VERY aggressive, dark, etc; while Changes of Life is more warm, happy, and joyous.
