Looks like my wife and I will be jetting off to Scotland in November. We most likely will be staying with relatives in Edinburgh and Glasgow. If anyone has knowledge of good techno or deep house clubs there along with any other things I should know (veggie restaurants, cool clothing shops, your favorite haunts, places to see and not to miss, etc.) please hit me back privately. Well I got to listen to a bit on a radio rebroadcast. It sounded good! Anyone else catch the Stardust bassline/track during Holiday?? [313] Herbie Hancock - Future to Future
New CD from Herbie. He's really keepin on! Featured collaborations with Carl Craig, Chaka Khan, Rob Swift and A Guy Called Gerald. Really groovy cuts. Wayne Shorter plays on it too, which is a nice treat. I'm so glad to see award winning jazz artists push the boundries of jazz-electronic fusion. And no wonder that Carl is involved. Seems he's everywhere!! I think the standout track is This is Rob Swift. Gerald gets nice and deep with the beats in Black Gravity, and Chaka gets reflective on The Essence. Carl's track Kembero Part 1 is a satisfying way to start the record, but the female vocal seemed a little too contrived. It's easily the most electronic sounding cut on the album. Produced by Bill Laswell, and most of the album carries his distinct mixing sound. If you've ever heard the Axiom CDs or the Panthalasa remixes, you get an idea of what the production's like. Released early next month, so don't sleep! Vince - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] how was madonna???
I attended this concert. It wasn't really what i was expecting though. Since I haven't really had a chance to listen to her latest cd except for the singles that have come off of it I heard alot of new material. It was a great show although I didn't know that she had picked up playing the gutair. The Stardust/Holiday track was really put together well. I was rather impressed with the Kraftwerk reference also. I also expected more dancing and some older songs but oh well It was a great show. I couldn't believe all the limo's outside on Sunday night at least there must have been like a thousand +. The crowd was rather eccentric and since I took my mom it was a huge but entertaining culture shock for her. I wanna know though what city exactly did she grow up in I heard both Waterford and Rochester Hills but I'm just curious. -Stacey - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I caught it Live via HBO and recorded it. There was a pre-show which showed Madonna had learned the guitar and it was hosted by that duff or McDuff chick, forgot her full name...she was a former mtv vj or announcer and did those Almay cosmetic commericals. All 'round, good show. g. alex wrote: madonna in detroit was on tv last night here in australia. i switched to another station to watch the 'up in smoke' tour with eminem, dr dre, ice cube etc. was pretty entertaining ab Today, Snowhite was turning 18. I'm so glad to see award winning jazz artists push the boundries of jazz-electronic fusion. And no wonder that Carl is involved. Seems he's everywhere!! Well... from the get, Herbie Hancock was one of the original innovators of the whole Electronic/Jazz/Fusion thing back in the day anyway. I am really excited about this too. Herbie hancock's influence even seaped into indie-rock when The Sea Cake did a remix album of their own material. It starts out with a long sample from Herbie Hancock talking about his obsession with electronics/gagetry, and how that is a throwback to his days of wanting to be an engineer. It's very clear that they've integrated electronics into their sound in the same spirit. Two of the members of The Sea and Cake are also in Tortoise, and they've been remixed by a bunch of people. The Sea and Cake have been synthesizing elements of indie rock, jazz and electronic music to brilliant effect for quite some time now, especially when John McEntire gets to go really nuts with the drums and drum machines at once (see the The Argument on The Fawn). *That* is nice. Oops - that was a bit of a tangent, but I guess the point of it all is that it would be great to see Herbie Hancock and/or Carl Craig team up with some of the indie-rock avant-garde like Tortoise/The Sea Cake, or Stereolab and see what comes out. Stereolab has made house on their own, and included a Luke Vibert remix on Aluminum Tunes. Some interest seems to be there. I think what really interests me is to see how great live music can be influenced by electronics, moreso than the other way around, since we're already seeing the effects of that. since we're on the unlikely subject of Madonna; I like the last 2 albums very much. in fact the Ray of Light album would make a great William Orbit album if Madonna would just stop singing all over the music :^) but it annoys me that since she *so* electronica and techno-y these days she hasn't acknowledged the Detroit roots of electronica or even tapped one of the numerous Detroit artists to do a remix. Have none of her handlers ever mentioned to her that her alleged hometown had a *huge* role in the creation of the music style she's ripping off these days? Re: [313] new order
We'll likely see the classic New Order (i.e. dancey stuff) on the remixes and on a possible EP out next year in conjunction with Chemical Brothers (it wasn't finished in time for the album). But if you come to Get Ready with any sort of expectation that it's going to carry on from where either Republic or Technique left off, you'll likely be disappointed. Get Ready smells of both the Electronic and Monaco projects as much as it does Brotherhood, which would be about the only other referent in terms of the foursome's previous previous output solo or as New Order. I would offer Someone Like You as the standout track on the album, for the reason that it's a pristine yet mature pop track of strong vocal harmonies, Hook's bass solos, Gilbert's incredible synths/effects, and Sumner's lost-boy mumbling--all in a slick, tight package. It's a step aside...with class. laz Martijn de Blaauw wrote: Hi all, Bought the new album of New Order ´get ready´ yesterday. After 8 years of silence they still sound pretty good!! [313] Belgium, Red Planet, Theo Parrish...
Howdy all, I've been ill all last week so didn't say this earlier, but if anyone happens to be in Belgium when RD puts on a party, do your best to get down to it. They pull out all the stops and I can guarantee a great atmosphere, equally great beer and some of the best people. And RD is pretty damn tidy of the ones and twos - Belgian party promoters take note :) Londoners can expect to hear him for themselves at some point in the not too distant future. While I'm on the subject, one of the great things about this list is it's facilitating of these kind of meetings. Should anyone be in London in the near future, give me a shout. It would be great to meet up. A lot of accomodation swaps go on, which is a superb idea. I only have a, by all accounts very comfortable, sofa to spare but people are welcome :) And if there's a party I'm planning and you fancy a spin, given enough notice, I'll do my utmost to fit you in. On other notes: Red Planet Flux night. I was ill, it was far too hot, the sound system in one room kept cutting out, the DJs were a bit over eager in their fader working and Chaos live was amusing but little more. My friend constantly asking everyone in UR shirt if they were Mad Mike was probably the best bit of the evening for me. It all seemed very ameuterish to me. But I suppose there was no way I would have missed it - I mean, I was ill and I went :) How was Lost? New records which are good I reckon: the two new Theo Parrishes on Sound Signature. Especially the 1987 one: one side sounds like he liked Washing Machine and the other sounds like Jeff Mills on Trax. Wicked. I heard the Larry Heard LP in Ghent and some of that sounds phenomenal. Snap it up, but leave a copy for when I get paid please. On a sad note, will miss Aaliyah. A real RB talent straight out of Detroit's High School for Performing Arts. Finally, if any Londoners are aware of interesting spaces (by which I don't mean some tiny basement of a crap bar) owned/run by party sympathetic people that hold around 300, could you drop me a line off list? Especially in and around N1, N5, N16 but a good varied range would be cool. I'm trying to get a bit of a database together for vague plans. Cheers, Jonny. P.S. I think Prince rocks. And well after Purple Rain, too. - Original Message - From: stuffed bird [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, August 21, 2001 8:43 AM Subject: [313] housemaster mac Hi Peepz, Had Jonny McIntosh over for the weekend and for a 'Kinky People'-party here in Belgium. Re: [313] Chaos was Belgium, Red Planet, Theo Parrish...
Have to admit that the UR night in London was a little chaotic (sic) to say the least. They had soundchecking problems right up to about 12 am, and then the DJ booth mixer's crossfader went, causing all sorts of problems. Chaos live was interesting but a little underwhelming to be honest. Only afrogermanic really stood out for me. Red Planet DJ was good, if not technically brilliant, his track selection was top notch. It was baking in there though and I think a lot of people just couldn't deal with. Also, to the venue, sort out having a trickle of water in the toilets when you've got oven-like temperatures going on. Although Lost was a little subdued, Robert Hood was on top form and was helped by superb sound at Mass. Those 313'ers who attended the last Lost at Mass with Uncle Jeffrey might remember it being a nightmare, but this time it was different. Good security, air conditioning and great sound. I thought for once that Steve Bicknell was actually not bad too. www.bleep43.co.uk - Original Message - From: Jongsma, K.J. I don't think you can say that Madonna grew up in Detroit exactly. She grew up in a suburb somewhere outside of Detroit, and relocated to NY when she was very young, like 18 or something. And yes, she was involved in the sort of avant- garde dance music culture that was happening in NY in the early '80s. But I doubt that Detroit techno has had much influence on her just cause she's from Michigan originally. I'm pretty sure she left Michigan before Techno was even around. She was down with the NY Electro scene when she used to hang with Jellybean Benitez and the like in her young days as a NYer. If anything, she should pay homage to that early '80s NY school of electronica. $.02 -J P.S.- I agree, her faux British accent sounds *rather* contrived :) Ray of Light.. techno-y??? Try TRANCE. I *heart* Madonna, but I recall her saying, IM doing something no one has ever done before. With her Ray of Light album. Which is bs. Your right.. being that she grew up in Detroit, she should know and acknowledge detroit techno and its roots. =) From: Sean Deason [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'alex' [EMAIL PROTECTED], Sean Deason [EMAIL PROTECTED], 'Dan Kurzius' [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] madonna Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 08:36:18 -0400 since we're on the unlikely subject of Madonna; I like the last 2 albums very much. in fact the Ray of Light album would make a great William Orbit album if Madonna would just stop singing all over the music :^) but it annoys me that since she *so* electronica and techno-y these days she hasn't acknowledged the Detroit roots of electronica or even tapped one of the numerous Detroit artists to do a remix. Have none of her handlers ever mentioned to her that her alleged hometown had a *huge* role in the creation of the music style she's ripping off these days? I think that with her influence, she could do a lot for the local techno scene by just acknowledging it. sean -Original Message- From: alex [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, August 28, 2001 8:12 AM To: Sean Deason; 'Dan Kurzius'; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] how was madonna??? Re: [313] Chaos was Belgium, Red Planet, Theo Parrish...
for his live-set. Why o why couldn't he where a shirt like every healthy techno freak. That way we didn't have to look at his artificial created beer belly. hahhahaha...what is an artifically created beerbelly !?! reverse lipo?? doing that. I know they haven't done a lot of gigs but this made the whole set a bit silly. Thank god they can make good music.../ techno needs more sense of humor damn it!!! if the music was dope, and the performance was silly, sounds pretty perfect to me... bees... that was priceless! sure, it was pretty obvious they don't play live that often, but even so i thought they put on a great show. im still not getting what was lacking about the performance if not the music...? out, esp Lennie, was almost tangible. i've never been a massive fan of the RNG sound on record... but live they were superb! beats + tracks 12 on 430uk is all time classic, some of my favorite house tracks ever! great to hear they delivered live, wish i was there.. jt _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] Chaos was Belgium, Red Planet, Theo Parrish...
im still not getting what was lacking about the performance if not the music...? The sound sucked. Microphones failed. A lot of the crowd there expected the early nineties 'hard music from a hard city' UR sound (i was wearing a UR t-shirt and a guy came up to me and asked if i knew if they had done anything since the RIOT ep?). the 'CHAOS cabaret' between songs took way too long, it really took the flow out of it. It really was a 'for those who know' performance. And most of the crowd didn't. that's what was lacking the most in my opinion: crowd support. i had fun though. ;) C. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[313] Random Noise Generation @ Lowlands
For those that were as amazed as I was with Random Noise Generation's liveset at the Lowlands festival last Sunday: the last track of their set was 'Systemized' off of their 'Instrument of Change' EP (4w-305). A jaw-dropping end to a fantastic liveset. They also played a gorgeous slow track that's going to be on their new album 'Reign'. Can't wait for that one! Otto PS As a long-ish sidenote: although they finally got it right for the RNG liveset, unfortunately the sound in the festival tent was screwed up most of the night, which did not do justice to the Chaos liveset and the Namowan and first Octave One DJ sets. Maybe liveacts (and perhaps even DJs) should be taking their own sound engineer with them to festivals, just like rock bands, instead of relying on the regular festival sound engineer? There's just too much differences between dance music and rock music to expect one engineer to be able to do both and I doubt there are enough specialist dance music sound engineers right now. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
