[313] unpaid DEMF bills (was: Never mind the bollocks...)
Anyone know whether this is true, that the sound bill hasn't been paid? If true, can anyone give me a contact name # for that company. I'm also looking for verifiable cases where acts had to shell out their own cash for hotel rooms, etc., which were to have been covered by the DEMF/PopCulture folks. In short -- if the media hasn't mentioned this yet, we can correct that, folks. Re: [313] can't we all just get along?
race has been talked into the fuggin ground as well, because yes it is a very essential and important subject. i'm not sure what is being argued here. actually, i see nothing being said at all, aside from some quotes from mainstream hiphop.. yes there is racism inherent in all societies and it is deeply entrenched in techno. and?? digging deeper..?? what are the issues being discussed, i missed something ok, you want to know, what the issues were before ? the main issues still are, that there are big race-problems in the US, (also on the whole globe) and the problems get reflected in some of 313-music, in titles, lyrics, samples, artwork, in interviews - but many people do ignore those messages, that artists do make to be heard - to communicate - - I got some mails here by some of the people with great taste (being writers, making music-pages, etc) saying that they just don´t care, what the messages are like - Also many reactions in the past showed up that many people do not agree at all that a strong fundament of 313-techno-music is based on black-culture and so they tried to proove that this is not true by highlighting many influences of white musicians in the world of music Then, also some people showed up they felt offended when it was about blackness, black artists black music etc... for various reasons ... some called it boring, crap some seemed to have a good motivation, that they don´t want to make any differences, based on the colour of the skin but I think it needs sometimes people to explain the messages to them that this is not the way the world order* keeps going on in reality - (* world order incl. about 50 % black soldiers in the us-army ? /correct me, damn me, if I am posting wrong numbers/ over 80 % of the killed soldiers in Vietnam were black ? - just another xample - put this into the relation of how many black people are locked in prison and how many black people are dying in the streets every day in the US) - theese were some of the main issues I think that have been discussed here, but not at all in a way that you could say - it´s all clear now - also J.T., I think it´s good when the people do bring themselves and their history intoo the frame, their own perspectives and experiences about myself - I feel that my english and knowledge actually wouldn´t be good enough to to enter this discussion, but I did feel the need to speak up, cauze some people somehow keep trying to wipe out those issues from the list - I do know it´s a heavy case and I can´t sleep, work and stop thinking about it as soon as I concentrate on it myself... - when I talk with some black friends about this ... (just imagine, it could only be one word that would seperate us 4 ever) - when I wonder how much they can take, when I see the ignorant reactions - when I remember how some storys about intelligence tests, spreaded by respectabled university professors used to make me believe black people wouldn´t be as intelligent as white people, when I was a teenager - when there was the biggest nazi-demonstration since the end of the second world war, marching through Berlin last year - I worry, when I put postings about this subject on the list, because I think I might be doing some harm to 313-culture cauze of talking shit - - and on and on - I do know it´s a heavy case - - but I was told, my worries ain´t a tiny bit as heavy, as it is to be black and living in Oakland, Brooklyn etc... or some areas in DETROIT m planetz2002 -- LoveThemPlanetZ peoplez plantz peaze pluz m GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet. http://www.gmx.net - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Each member of the Committee, which also includes Godfather of Detroit Techno Juan Atkins and Moods and Grooves owner/DJ Mike Grant among tohers, will have the opportunity to submit the names of people that they think should perform at this year's DEMF, discuss reasons why, and eventually vote democratically on the results. What a difference a year makes ! says a visibly-excited Oldham. Needless to say, I'm honored to have been sought out and asked to participate. I look forward to working together with all of my fellow Committee members to help map out the creative direction of this year's DEMF. What DJs and/or live acts are Oldham planning to propose to the committee ? Well, it's a little too soon to divulge that specific info, but I will say that my emphasis will be on a few Detroit people like myself who were overlooked in years past. Also, my personal criteria and logic is that you must have records out, or if you're a non-Detroit artist, you must have recorded for or have some connection to a Detroit label. I'd consider lesser-known talents also. Of course, that's just me. There are six other very esteemed opinions to take into account. And will DJ T-1000 finally get to rock the DEMF as a performer ? I'm proud to say that I'll be finally taking the stage as a DJ at the DEMF this year. It's been a long time coming.I've played big European parties like Mayday, Astropolis,Tribal Gathering and Love Parade, but this is home. I can't wait to bang it. Also due to this news, Oldham's new artist CD on Pure Sonik as DJ T-1000, Neutra, originally scheduled for late March, will be delayed to debut exclusively at the DEMF in May. The Neutra EP, the three-track vinyl preview of the album, is out on schedule in late February. All other details about this year's DEMF will be announced shortly by Pop Culture Media. [313] Current 02.16.02
Hello, Last week CJAM had a pledge drive. This has been a dilemma for me for the last couple weeks because I had to directly ask for money for the music I was playing. It got me thinking about why public radio is important for the community at large and for music in general. The reason why public radio is important is that individuals are actually in control of the culture. I make my own decisions about what I am going to play, if I feel that a recording is important, it will hit the air. My playlists are not determined by soundscan sales figures, commerical interests, or demographic market research. If I feel it, it is going to hit the air. Recently, sections of the international music press has been reporting that Detroit Garage Rock is saving Rock music. Last month Mojo put Detroit locals The White Stripes on their cover and said that they were the best live band in the world. The BBC has reported that Detroit Garage Rock has caused the biggest stir in the rock scene since Punk exploded in 1977. Strangely enough, there has been hardly any notice of this in the mainstream press in Detroit. I devoted the first hour of my show to records that you should never play on an electronic music show. It might not be my format, but I played them to make a point. Public radio gives me the freedom to play what I feel is important without the restrictions placed upon DJ's on the corporate radio stations. You might not listen to Current to hear the MC5, but you should be thankful that you can hear something like that on the radio, because WDVD and WDRQ certainly do not allow their DJ's the opportunity to do adventurous radio. I want to say thank you to everyone in Detroit who is listening to the show and who thinks that music is more imporant than business. I have been wondering if people are feeling what I am playing, and this week I found out that they are. Most shows with better time slots were lucky to reach half their expected pledge quotas. Current hit its quota with just US contributions, and went well beyond that with Canadian contributions. That is amazing for a show that late at night, at the very end of the pledge week. Once again, thanks for supporting the music. Anyway, enough of my jabbering... 430 West recording artists Octave One will be appearing on the show next week. They have been on the scene since Techno 2 comp on 10/Virgin records. It should prove to be an interesting interview. I hope you will join us. [313] Liberators
I have much respect for the Liberators: The first club night I attempted to promote was in London in early 1996. I had Dave Clark and Chris Liberator as the two guests for the night. We had about 120 paying customers turn up - that's all. When Chris came in he refused to take any money and still played his whole set. Clarky boy who was already on the decks sent his missus to speak to me and offered to play a 1-1/2hr set for £550 instead of the original 2hrs for £750. Chris also filled in his extra half-hour. Some months later when my finances had improved I came upon Chris at a squat party and offered him some dosh to make up for the let down previously. He absolutely refused to take any money. The most he would let me give him was a can of Stella. Interestingly enough - I had Tanith booked for the 3rd night and after demanding 5* hotel, chauffeured car from airport he failed to turn up and called the chauffeur at the airport half and hour after his flight landed to say he had locked his record box in the boot of his car and couldnt open it. I was pissed off to say the least. I demanded he repay the deposit I'd paid his agents, and refund the cost of the chauffeur and hotel. I then heard that my name was all over the German techno press as disreputable c*nt who no one should deal with. For what its worth, Ben Sims stood in to play that night. It was the first time he had ever played in a 'commercial club'. The wheel obviously came full circle when he started recording for Tresor. Rightly or wrongly, the idea behind the title according to the guys was a dig at the UK dance press, not Detroit, which at the time was very snobbish about counterpointing the US music against rave culture. (Oh how soon that evaporated, with the rise of that old UK imperialism.) Most of those guys, especially Chris, have backgrounds in punk music. They have a good allegiance with Carl Cox too. Until lately those guys' scene, the squat party/acid techno scene, was ignored by the UK press but apparently their records have been supported by the hard house contingent. Until lately Chris was living in a council flat, so they are humble guys. I think there was an article in Seven in which they cited an appreciation for early UR stuff. They know how to rock a crowd and keep a positive vibe going. It's true, it's not brain food (mostly - I heard 'Moonraker' by the Foremost Poets first dropped by them - the original mix) but it's damned good fun! Most importantly, they've still got this idea about dance being something like a unifying and catalytic social force. (Naive, I agree, but I'm a sucker for sincere idealists and triers). And underpinning the compilations of medieval acid, is always a push to get people involved in their environments and take control of their lives - usually politically. Sound familiar, Detroit? I had a laugh recently when I read a track title on one of Chris' latest mixes 'Hackney Council Are A Bunch of C*nts'! I think the Nuclear Free Zone parties are still running at 414 (Brixton)... RE: [313] DJ Sneak in Ann Arbor tonight.
I think DJ Sneak is an excellent DJ, one of my favourites actually. I've always liked his style of mixing, the way he likes to 'bang' a tune in. Another aspect of Sneak's mixing that i enjoy is when he takes an old 80's pop record (usually something you haven't heard for years) and lays down a house beat over it - this always gets a party rocking! He has some great records up his sleeve, all the filtered disco House and Latino flavas, and it's great when he decides to play some of the Cajual / Relief harder style Chicago House. I've even heard him drop 'The Bells' which went down a treat =) (313 link!) Sneak is also a very good producer and remixer. I recently picked up his remix of Giorgio Moroder 'The Chase' which I only learned of after a tip of from this list, and I'm more than happy with my purchase (I'm told it's quite hard to find now, I paid £8.99 for it.) Yep, I've heard Sneak many a time and although sometimes the mixing is slightly out I'd still rate him as my favourite House DJ. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [313] Carl At The Camilian
I went to see Carl, as I was up from Chicago. Synopsis: First of all, it wasn't free (as I was expecting it to be), but no biggie - $5 to see Carl Craig. When my wife and I first got there, there were hardly 20 people there and Carl was spinning some seriously old hip-hop. It was a very nice hodge-podge of songs for the first hour or hour and a half, as Carl went through old hip-hop and disco, and mixed in some jazz. It was almost like he was at home showing someone his record collection, as he would frequently stop the record in the middle of play and take it off the turntable and go and grab another record while there was silence. If someone really wanted to find a problem with Carl that could have been their gripe, but he was just having so much fun! About two hours into it, the camillian cafe was full to the gills (but it's very small - which means about 50 people were there). A few people started dancing, and it really caught on. At this point Carl was playing strictly old house tunes from the late 80's for all of his friends that had come out to chat and say hi. 80% of the people in there knew all the words to all these songs, most of which I'd only heard once or twice before, the rest I'd never even heard. Really cool mixing, really nice crowd. I'd say that most of the people in the place were at or around 30 years old - so it made for a cool atmosphere. We ended up leaving at around one, and the place was still packed, the music was still fresh, and the sandwiches were out of this world! Absolutely splendid tasting sandwiches. Why would it be necessary to have promoters? Don't they bring in their favorites anyway or do they bring in big names for a big payday? If you look at the first statement if the Free Press article: A seven-member board of longtime Detroit techno musicians will choose the artist lineup... the panel is there only to choose the talent they don't need to know how it works (festival producer/promoter = Pop Culture Media). I would think that traveling and developing relationships with other DJs/artists, they are more then qualified to choose a lineup. The fact there are 7 shows there will be checks and balances where someone couldn't just bring in their buddies (perhaps as before). Plus, most of them have been around almost 20 years and know who was there from the start. I'm hopeful too that they'll produce a good lineup and keep the spirit alive. I'll even say further that Pop Culture themselves has experience in organizing (or have been involved in) huge events and festivals in the past (i.e. as far as I know, the 'World Party' and the Jazz Festival) so that's the 'promoter' component there. As if Carl had previous experience in putting together a huge festival on his own. To be quite frank, it seems to me alot of 'buddies' were picked to play the last two years. Flame, flame, --G. RE: [313] Re: DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin313
Oh, they should not be on the logistics end of it. When I say promoters get involved, I mean from a creative angle. Obviously the reason PMC is in on all of this is they know how to handle an event this size. But of course just because an event is big does not mean it is any good. Incorporating some of the aspects of the Detroit scene on an event this size would definitely be something best handled by people who have done it first hand. A lot of the people involved throwing events here work their brains out on those events and I have no doubt would do the same given the opportunity to do it right. And yes I know several promoters who have worked on and are qualified to work on concert festival size events. -Original Message- From: Dan Sicko [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 2:40 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] Re: DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin313 Heh. [313] Re: DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin313
At the risk of maybe stepping on some toes here, I, for one, don't think promoters are necessary. The atmosphere and line-ups at the first two DEMF's pretty well speak for themselves, in my opinion. When you have people on the advisory board like the group that has been assembled for this year, I would think they could contact and deal with the artists/performers directly, rather than adding a middle man acting as an agent who's going to add his own fee into the cost and further add to the expenses. I'd also be concerned about a promoter possibly pushing or attempting to book another performer under his umbrella that probably wouldn't fit into the DEMF lineup, just for the sake of the almighty dollar. But all of that aside, I agree that the panel (its make-up in particular) is a step in the right direction. I believe the DEMF's future will be okay (maybe even bright, perhaps?), but we shall see what unfolds this year. :) Matt E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Web Site: http://www.magicmattkelly.com Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2002 09:00:07 To: 313@hyperreal.org From: (Truth Be Told) [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin313 Why would it be necessary to have promoters?
