[313] track id: DJ Pierre?

2002-06-21 Thread s mcgill
I have been looking for this record since 94.

Can anybody tell me what the record that features the vocal What is house
music? A unique form, a unique form, of dance music. is please?

I have been lead to believe that it is DJ Pierre on Emotive. Is this correct
so far? What is the title? And is it still available?

It's a cracker!!

2002-06-21 Thread james bucknell
that's 'what is house muzic?' by dj pierre as phuture scope from 1993. it
was releases on emotive records (new york).
it's also on an emotive compilation 'the future sound of new york'.

the single is hard to get, really hard. the compilation isn't too hard.
great song. pierre's third best track after 'rise from your grave' and
'inside out'.

 Sad news, I'm afraid:

Last week, renowned techno club Tresor (Berlin), received an announcement
from the new owner of the Tresor property. Later this year, one of the most
notorious techno locations ever, will be demolished.

Of course Tresor is hoping for a miracle and needs support. A spokesman of
Tresor said : 'Fight with us for Tresor's survival'.

This means also, that Tresor will celebrate its last Love Parade and Tresor
Park this year, which will be undoubtly legendarious. The theme this year is
 Solid.

Re: [313] track id: DJ Pierre?

2002-06-21 Thread Jonny McIntosh
For DJ Pierre's best tracks are I'd rate Generate Power,
the Shine remix and the Music Express remix right up there,
because I'm a total sucker for the wild pitch sound, and you can't
 leave out Acid Trax.

The remix of Urban Soul Sex On My Mind in an Altered State stylee is the
one for me, a really epic twisting mix that just seems a wee bit more fluid
than other Wild Pitch stuff he did. I'm also pretty partial to Master
Blaster (as Joint Venture) and, of course, Fantasy Girl (Pfantasy Club) -
the best of the ?? Girl tracks. What Is House Muzik? is annoyingly on
clear vinyl, so when you do find a copy, it's invariably popping and
scratching all over the place.

[313] Sonar/John Tejada

2002-06-21 Thread Michael D Tyrer
Just noticed that @ #1 in the Groovetech Top20 is John TejadaArian
Leviste's 'Its Only Music'.

I thought John Tejada was one of the sets I enjoyed most at Sonar. I am not
aware of having heard John play before but I'll certainly look out for him
in future. The program described John as the most prestigous name in Tech
House. Is that right? What I heard him play at Sonar (and i dont know trax
to be able to name them) was not what i interpret as Tech-house. I believe
John is a member of this board and would be interested to know what style he
thougth he played. (Groovetech I noticed also describe his track as House,
Techno, Tech House).

Its rather lame for me to say that i also rated Richie's as one of the most
enjoyable as I'm a well known RH groupie! Jeff Mills came on and played a
blinder, so I wasnt really expecting Richie to better it, particularly, as
of late, I've been disappointed with a lot of what Rich has played. His
first 10 minutes or so were spent showing off the remixing potential of
Final Scratch, but from then he really rocked, and it was definately one of
the best sets I have heard from that man in the last couple of years.

I was also impressed with Thomas Brinkman as Soul Centre and Fabrice Lig in
his Soul Designer guise who each played on either side of John Tejada. (And
to think I nearly didnt go on the Friday night . a night, where I also
then got invited to another party to hear the end of a 7hr Sven Vath set,
with an exuberant RH partying alongside.. which really put the icing on my
visit to Sonar!).

2002-06-21 Thread J. T.
i'm late but this is still in my inbox so here's some favorite italo (not
necessarilly a top 5, but up there) off the top of my head:

gary low - you are a danger
(edit out gary's vox but keep the girls'!...you a dange, you a
strange..)

change - angel in my pocket
(only the first 1'30, which is like sinister tense kano...a bootleg edit
vers needs to be done!)

gobliin - flashing
(more proto-techno than disco i think..taken from the tenebre soundtrack)

doctor's cat - feel the drive
(the single has a great instrumental version approaching moroder on the
flip, plus the vox vers is great too)

automat - droid
(italo before italo was italo! covered umpteen times, and apparently
appeared early on as the theme to a brazillian tv news show...nice!! the
original still my favorite, so raw there is blood on the beats!)

and of course casco, charlie, kano, robotnick, scotch, etc are also way up
in my tops as well!

there, really nice guy too) was telling me that back in the early 80's
on ABC Sports they were used to use italo tracks by Trilogy and Dharma
to use as intro music to the sports shows... so appropriate that for
that highghtened dramatic cheese factor ...

Just noticed that @ #1 in the Groovetech Top20 is John Tejada Arian
 Leviste's 'Its Only Music'.

Possibly because it's released on... Groovetech Records!

I had assumed looking at their regular top20 lists that their label would
lots of mediocre club crap, but I have been pleasantly surprised at the
quality of the Groovetech releases. The Swayzak mix comp (unmixed 2x12)
had some great dubby stuff from Convextion (one of the tektite tracks),
Akufen, CiM, etc. and other GT releases from Tejada, Dan Curtin, hmmm..

So speaking of Tejada,

I ran out of time at the store before I could drop a needle on his another new
one (a 2x12?) with obnoxious teddy bears on the full-color jacket. What label
is that, and how is it? I've heard it compared, stylistically, to his LP on
deFocus for that midtempo/downtempo-ish style, which I really like - but that
is a high bar for comparison. Can anyone confirm or deny?

That would probably be the new album 'Daydreams in Cold Weather' on Plug

I hate to be pessimistic, but it seems to me like they have already hammered
the nails into the coffin... I'd be more concerned that nobody we know gets
sued for owing back royalties for four
years, which they have to come up with in 3 months! As for the future of
internet broadcasting, there doesn't seem to be one... I think the reality is,
unless the underground and non-mainstream
forces join together, the RIAA and the big labels will continue to have their
way. In a capitalist society money equates to political clout. I personally
boycott the major labels, I will NEVER
buy a new CD anymore that is from a major record label, I'll just steal a
digital copy or buy it used.

You can get some ideas as to what is going on in their camp from the
tracklisting. As always, Transmat will do what it wants when it wants, so
you will just have to wait and see. I remember back when the first
Time:Space comp came out back in 99 and there was a great deal of talk about
Transmat releasing full albums from all the artists involved. Obviously,
other than Deepartures In Time, none of the artists involved released albums
 after that comp.

doesn't Indio count?

I have a mix that was labelled as Claude Young - djsets.com;
I got it off of Soulseek though.
If I saw a copy I would buy it though.
It is really excellent. Mixing seems smooth (no tricks I noticed) but nice long
blends.
And the track selection is just a great update of what I would consider to be
the classic deep Detroit techno sound.

Re: [313] Sonar/John Tejada

2002-06-21 Thread David Powers
Maybe this is on a tangent, but what exactly would people consider to be
tech-house anyway? My personal impression of Tejada at DEMF was that his sound
would fall under that label, this has always been a curious term however. I
would be interested to know what sound Mr. Tyreer would consider to be
tech-house as opposed to John Tejada's sound, for example. I know there may be
some issues with the term tech-house being used rather loosely by certain DJs in
the UK that I'm not fully aware of here in the state. In one way, it seems like
a lot of Detroit techno records could actually be called tech-house as they do
fall somewhere in between techno (esp. in the fullon banging sense of the term)
and house.

[313] TechHouse (was Sonar/John Tejada)

2002-06-21 Thread Michael D Tyrer

Maybe this is on a tangent, but what exactly would people consider to be
 tech-house anyway?
I would be interested to know what sound Mr. Tyreer would consider to be

Ok I know I'm going to get myself into trouble here..

i listened to all 4 tracks on John Tejada's 'Its Only Music' on the
groovetech site.
Tracks 1, 2 4, for me, could easily have been classified as Tech-house
whilst the Klute 'Lost in Detroit' mix (track 3) i would have cataloged as
house rather than techno.

At the moment when I hear the words 'Tech House' i immediately think of the
sort of stuff I have heard Terry Francis play over recent months at Fabric
in London. I opened my big mouth on another board some weeks back and said
that I thought Terry Francis was really boring with his boring, boring
tech-house and that's what the sound is to me. Someone came back to tell me
that one of the most driving tunes in a particular set he had heard the
other night was a terry francis new tune

Go back 18 months ago, when the sound was new, it was interesting and it was
fun to listen to, after a diet of more manic techno, but most of that
original stuff is not there now.

I know someone who knows the individual tracks (john Tejada) will now come
on the board and tell me everything he played at Sonar was of a tech-house
sound and similar to 'Its Only Music' - but thats not how I remember it.
The Sound system at Sonar was superb. But I dont think that it was the
sound system which made the set i heard sound so 'alive' because the 2
places in London where I've heard Tech House have been The End (probably
the best sound system in London) and Fabric (which isnt too far behind
either in sound quality).

On one of the magazines about a year ago, there was a free CD from Terry
Francis - I'll try to dig this out, and I really liked that so something has
gone wrong somewhere.

I think (and im thinking out loud) that you can have a downbeat techno at
120 bpm, but generally that techno sound, is at a faster pace than that. I
didnt think there was too much variation in the 3 'I love Music' tracks of
John's that justified 3 different genre's.

I'm interested to know what people think. I'd like to see a few pointers to
tracks/sets which people on this board consider to be quality tech house.
I'll listen to them and come back with my 2p's worth. I'll possibly also
end up agreeing, and for my part, I'll look out for some tech-house sets
which i regard as typical (boring) examples of the music.

I'm waiting to be educated. 4 me 'Techno' music is the sound on the sets of
Mike Dearborn, Adam Beyer, who immediately spring to mind - but also the
Richie Hawtin (my God) or Ben Sims sound. [I know Hawtin, Sims and Beyer
all have their loopiness in common] but I also love Derrick May, Kevin
Saunderson ... the list is endless. Jeff Mills features too, but i've also
gone through a period of disenchantment with Jeff when he was playing the
Burundi parties at Lost.

I'm sorry my examples here are so London based - our good friends in US
immigration, think i'm not the desirable type to set foot on hallowed soil -
at least not yet ..!

I can't get an idea of the definition of tech-house from the CD's I've

At first, I thought tech-house was a combination of house - a music
based on a vocal form and techno - sort of a through-composed form or
spinning out. But that didn't come through the listening.
