Four track remix EP of the 60s-70s French composer, who died in 1975.

Does Carl Craig remix 'Le Samourai' by chance? Awesome film noir (nothing to
do with samurai's - not explicitly anyway).

I think it's still very, very underground, though Metro Area are popular and
commercial DJs have discovered them. The DJs who are playing that sound are
still fairly underground. A few people are inventing new nights around it.
That's the thing in Melbourne - boutique nights with really eccentric music
policies. There is an amazing DJ here called Agent 86 who mixes up electro
with everything rom HMC to Amerie to The Seed by The Roots and his own
electro productions and he scratches and everything. That hybrid style is

partly because Gasp Entertainment left and stopped doing innovative parties

2003-04-30 Thread Matthew MacQueen
a lot of house music does seem (to me) to be gettting
a bit too polite of late.

this i agree with, but there's ALWAYS been that lame, watered down crap that
gets filed under house, maybe you're just noticing/hearing it more or in the
shops Ken ? There's probably more house labels than techno, (hard to imagine
but... ha ha). House has broader appeal and also more commericalized trends
than techno (a broad generalization, but one I think it for the MOST part
true..).

Even though I have enjoyed virtually
everything I've heard from Geist and Jesrani et al, I do think
that they have contributed rather a lot to a trend of too clean,
  rather tame and 'uneccentric' house.

Sorry Ken I gotta take issue with this offhand comment... THey didn't
'contriubute' to it, they created their own sound! They made something
original out of older inspirations and spawned an army of immitators... some
intersting but most IMHO weak by comparison, or not different enough from M.A.
to hold my interest. I also find Metro Area anything BUT uneccentric! So
the first time you heard them could you really say that? All the varied roots
you can hear in their tracks, i think the combo of all those sounds is truly
eccentric, as eccentric as the weirdo 'lost tracks' they play if you've ever
heard them DJ out. When they dropped these Metro Area 12s one at a time there
was nothing else quite like it (new) on the dance music market... w/ live
instruments combined with deep funky electronics yet didn't sound noodle-y and
silly, nothing that was made in the last decade anyway. It's just sewn up so
tight... Now it's taken a couple of hard-fought years of their sound honing and
now that they have found some exposure and a 'sound' all their own, people will
label it a trend, which is too bad, Metro area was so eccentric people has
difficulty categorizing it, which is often a good sign IMHO.

Just as a point of comparison: Jeff Mills got blamed when he did this around
the time he clicked solidly into 'that Purposemaker' sound for awhile, and
series of first 3 to 5 12-inches on that sublabel and then everyone complained
that techno was all going into 'that purposemaker sound'. OK, but the one think
I don't think is fair to do is BLAME the innovator (in this case Mills) for all
the purposemaker copycats! Some producers made careers as making purposemaker
'cover tracks', ha ha.. sad but true. It's one thing to be inspired, it's
another (and a fine line in techno to be sure) to make copycats.

If you don't like the tight production values that you can hear in MA (not raw
enough) all I can say is Morgan's productions have *always* had that sharpness
and precision, even on his old Metamorphic and Environ and Clear records, when
it was more techno than house. His production values have been consistently
high throughout, and his ear for melody as well I think few have it quite like
that.

There is plenty of raw house stuff out there too, it's just that (in my
experience) there's not a lot of it that shows the same kind of quality you
hear with Metro Area. I am of course a huge fan of chicago jackin' trax, love
em!!! but for me there's not a lot of raw or really unique house coming out
(of chicago right now anyway) that was the way it used to be. New generations
of producers aren't as constrained as the founders were, and you get a lot of
stuff made on computers and not a lot of 2nd and 3rd generation house producers
are selling their iMacs for RZ-1's, etc. ;)

Which is why I've somewhat gone back to much older
material which displays a roughness simply because that was
all that was possible at the time (I'm talking pre-1990) from
the technology available. Also, what new stuff I buy has to have
 some sort of edge.

I do share your desire for uniqueness too, but i don't feel like house needs to
be underproduced or 'rough' to have it. Not as a sole trait anyway.

on the previous points (many others commented on too):
About the whole 'electro house' genre, I think as most silly over-labeled genre
names go, (microhouse? techhouse? hardhouse? househouse???) they are coined
by journalists who need to sell in headline in the here today, err wait, i've
got a different career tomorrow world of dance music journalism. (save for a
few of the quality writers, Tom Magic Feet, Mr. Sicko and a handful of others
who have been into the music longer than flavor or magazine of the month ;)

herion house is the stupidest yet... can we please let that die, it was a silly
term by a bad writer and the music has connections to heroin except in the
writers own veins. I thought it was buried years ago. If you're trying to
categorize Theo Parrish: yes it's difficult and that's why it's so good. I
know it's natural to want to label things when communicating verbally (in an
email list for example) but putting a big magnifying glass over every artist
and trend is a sure way to burn

I don't read those magazines, but sometimes i write for them.
The idea of 'electro house' does seem a bit of an oxymoron to me, since
my concept of different genres is rooted in the characteristic
beat patterns
they use.

House music almost invariably employs a kick on the beat (i.e. 1 2 3 4)
and a 'backbeat' sound, usually but not always a clap (i.e. 2 4) Around
this armiture all sorts of syncopation is possible, but that boom chick
boom chick between 115 and 130 BPM is what makes it instantly recognizable.

Electro, by contrast has the backbeat on 2 and 4, but generally has a
syncopated, prominent kick. House will drop the backbeat on occasion, but
Electro generally maintains the backbeat from beginning to end.

So Electro house would be ... what? Maybe this seems flippant, but
discriminating between genres is a continuing vexation for me. I'm still
trying to figure out what hard house is, but I have a hard time dissecting
it taxonomically because any time I hear a mix represented to me as hard
house I rarely last more than 5 minutes before I run screaming.

Ken, I was thinking this too. His solo stuff is definitely a lot grittier in

People have been claiming this'll be the next big revival for a while now
though. I haven't seen much evidence of that, but It does seem logical, as
these things go. Have either of you dirty-house boys heard the Chicken Lips
Trax Dub of Headman's 'It Rough'? Sounds circa '86, released '02. I've heard
Gene Farris and Joakim drop it at high volume so far. Both times it sounded
s big (but dirty, errr rough ;).

Ken, if you want something really dirty (like so poorly recorded it's hard
to mix), track down the Pepe Bradock remix of the Gotan Project (seems to be
very hard to find already though). It's got a mid-range acid line and an
almost non-kick, so it's basically all-mids. If it isn't dirty enough for
ya, I don't know what would be. Or maybe the accordian will throw you off.
;) In general, I don't see how you could go wrong with Monsieur Peepz. His
remix of Incognito even says something like recorded in a noisy Parisian
apartment (although ironically, that's probably the cleanest thing he's
done)...

Gotta say I'm not really seeing a cleanliness trend in house myself, or
maybe I'm misunderstanding what is menat by 'clean' and 'polite'??? I would
argue overall production value has been steadily climbing forever, but I
don't see that as the same thing, or bad.

2003-04-30 Thread James Bucknell
where is metro area stuff being played in australia, who is playing it?
in the year i've been in sydney i haven't even heard any american house
music, let alone decent house of the metro area variety or any early 80s
disco stuff.
please let me know, i won't be back in new york for a few more months and
i'm very very desperate for a dance.
james

every time i go out to little bars and things all i hear is metro area
sounding stuff, that wicked electro/synthy house.

is it just here that this is happening? (australia) or is electro house
 taking over the world?

i love the stuff but i fear that it will become over played and get into the
top 40 with really cheesy stuff that tries to emulate the proper atrists in
 this genre...

RE: (313) This Friday - iPod event at all Apple stores

2003-04-30 Thread Langsman, Marc

Every Apple store will have a DJ playing on iPods from 6-10
PM. General info is up at www.apple.com/retail/may2

How does that work !?? Do Ipods have pitch controls nowadays ?
What would be fantastic actually would be the combination of ipod +
finalscratch
(oh yeah and if only they give ipod recording functionality..)

(313) More Dirty House

2003-04-30 Thread Phonopsia
Also highly recommended are the two Kemit Sources EP's. Both harken back the
Kutis to my ear. The one on Versatile has a totally different I:Cube mix on
it too - which sounds really Detroit-y.

Also, the Herbert remixes of the Mighty Bop's 'Lady'. It's Herbert, do you
even need to hear it? ;) Also that remix he did of Karin Krog last year.

Norma Jean Bell - London Fog (OK, not that new)

Muziq - Half Crazy ( The Other Version / Limited New House Mix ) - make sure
to get this version for the really melodic dirty percussion

Glad Today - The Music Solstice - Debut (I think) from a Baltimore house
band!!! Really excellent stuff all over the map, lead by live trumpets and
vocals. The A-side has preacher sample, but the B-sides win again.

The Movers - Love Cosmic Spiritual (not sure how you'll feel about this one,
but I would call it dirty, and I bought it ;)

N'Dambi - Call Me (Limited Re-Edit) if you haven't got it yet, run don't
walk

New World Aquarium - Heavy Metal

That's a start for some less-than obvious stuff, and still not sure if this
quite meets the criteria.

Heard some Metro Area getting kicked around at the Anthony Rother party
two weekends back of all places. I guess sometimes you hear that kind of
stuff over at the Mars Lounge as well (in between all the
electro-clash-punky stuff I guess)

Can't say I heard solid nights of it though. Maybe more in between other
bits and pieces during a night.

I really liked the vocals but the lyrics to this one made me balk. I mean, I
understand where he's coming from, but basically you can reduce it to:

a) we were great friends
b) we fooled around - oops!
c) now *you* are acting strange
d) i wish *you* would sort your sh*t out so we can go back to 'a'

Dunno. Something about the assignment of blame in this song rubs me the
wrong way, but I really can't argue against a dancefloor full of people
getting down to it. I mean, I can totally relate, but only because I was
being a dick when I felt that way too. ;) Since hearing it on a dancefloor

I'm not sure if I particularly g.a.f. abt the lyrical content! If we
deconstructed all the lyrics of most of the tracks we are interested in
here, we really wouldn't be left with much that is literary, noble or even
coherent most of the time! The vibe is everything, for better or worse.
Plus, I can make my own mistakes and learn from them myself, thanks, without
need of the wisdom of an R'n'B singer to teach me, albeit in beautiful

Maybe it's time we started to expect more though? That 'glad today' record I
mentioned earlier has excellent romantic lyrics, and the Brooks album is
packed with them straight through (even if they're largely nonsensical, they
are great: see - dripping in gold). Dani Sicialano springs to mind too. I'll
be the first to admit that I'll let lyrics slide in house, but I don't know
exactly when we lowered our expectations. Lyrics used to be a big draw for
me before I got into house/techno, and they still are when I shop outside of
this. There have always been good political lyrics, and still are, like
Blackman, etc, but I'd like to see more insightful probings of emotions.
It's not like there's ever been a time when there wasn't some good lyrical
tracks in house, I just think people have more room to write crap if it
kicks.

2003-04-30 Thread Alex Bates
there was one tune on OM by andy caldwell i think, there was some hugely
well known story about how the lyrics in that song prompted some cali guy to
chase his girlfriend to france and ask her to marry him (of course they all
lived happily ever after)

so they lyrics DO mean something in some PROPER house tunes!

I was having this conversation just yesterday with friends, about the lack
of good lyrics in house and techno. We were discussing 'Black Water' (Don't
let them tell you that war is the answer etc. Pretty cool) and a few things
came up, among them -

Elements of Life - MAW Feat. Blaze (MAW)
Excellent lyrics concerning our depletion of natural resources.

In fact, a lot of Blaze stuff has really well thought out lyrics

Acting Crazy - Round Three (Main St.)
Weird ass lyrics about someone's smacked up [girl]friend :-)

Dajae - Day by Day (Cajual)
Just great lyrics about coping with daily life.

Mmmmhave work to do.can't think

Later,

(313) original song id

2003-04-30 Thread robin pinning

speaking of lyrics

can anyone identify the original vocal that's sampled on Autiomatrix 'Miss
You' (Footwork04)

contains the snippet:

'ever since you went away'
and something like 'i don't know what to do with myself'

it's a male vocalist btw (and is prolly a dead famous tune that i should
know :) )

funny we should be talking about lyrics but i can never really work out
what vocalists are saying but it's more the emotion/sound thaat i pick up
on...probs why i like latin vocals :)

cheers

In Sydney you'll find it at:
Mad Racket parties (Simon Caldwell, Jimmi James, Ken Cloud and Zootie -
any one of them will play it.)

Also, I've been playing once a month at an indoor/outdoor bar called the
Lounge in Surry Hills, Friday nights post-work drinks. Think I'm back
there again in late May.

I went back to Adelaide to do a gig late last year and it was going on at
a place called Minke. If you can catch HMC in Adelaide, he'll be throwing
it down. The catch is that he's not playing much anymore.

Melbourne, Honkytonks and probably Soul'sa (if it's still running), check
out the GoBang! nights at Suede with Jason Martin, Askew and others.
Also, Jason Martin plays back room at Revolver... Martino can you fill in
the details?

Best bets for a boogie woogie coming up in Sydney is May 10 at Mad
Racket. Tom Clarke is guesting.

It's around, just have to hunt it down! :)

I agree that Metro Area really put together a unique sound, but definitely
not without precedence and influences. To my ears they seem to have picked
up on Disco, esp the later records that were coming out when Disco was falling
out of favor with the masses. People like Chic and Patrice Rushen are obvious
percursors.

What made it sound so fresh to my ears is that they don't sample other records.
It's their own music, and they have a subtle, sneaky way of building up
a track that stays away from big room rah rah buildups.

Every Apple store will have a DJ playing on iPods from 6-10
PM. General info is up at www.apple.com/retail/may2

How does that work !?? Do Ipods have pitch controls nowadays ?
What would be fantastic actually would be the combination of ipod +
finalscratch (oh yeah and if only they give ipod recording functionality..)

PG Totally true. I think ipod's are one of the best things to happen to
music, i have over 500 albums encoded on one device that's smaller + lighter
than my portable cd player. Rich has been using one forever.. I don't know
how you would mix using one of them though, with two i suppose you could dj

chicago has been getting some really good electronic shows lately, but last

too bad there weren't more people who either:
 1. don't know who these guys are.
 2. just didn't bother to show.

but for the 50 or so people that were there, we had a great time.

Yea, definitely. One of the best techno PAs I've seen in years. At
least everybody who was there was super into it.

Rumor has it Fehlman's playing DEMF, which would be awesome. That's the
perfect soundtrack to a sunny afternoon in Detroit dancing outside with
your friends and a few thousand other people.

Re: (313) Fw: Welcome 2 The Rave (nr Paris)

2003-04-30 Thread KiDDy*RaVeR
Thats right, im waiting for this W2TR.
No more raves around Paris...yea.
Lets call it parties where you can dance on classical techno, some good
techno with a lotsa groove in it, tinged with Detroit vibes.
But that sucks its THAT expansive (30Euros or 25Euros).

While illegal raves remains really big here. But the sound ya can hear in
there is really strong...hardtekno. Which is often rather boomy than
groovy.
And for the first time, for its 10th anniversary (May 1st), the TEKNIVAL,
big event that gather many sounds systems ('illegal' rave promoters) can be
considered as LEGAL.
Since its declared, and authorized. This could be realized due to
negotiations, and in return promoters have to make some efforts and organize
the event much more (water spot, trash spot, toilettes, first-aid team,
parking...).
So, one important reason why legal raves has disappeared, organization
cost money.
But they gonna make it though! Cuz it will be on donation.
And thats the point!! I prefer thousand times to give away 5 or 7 Euros, and
enjoy an organized party than pay 30Euros for one night !!
(alright, i know there are the sounds sytem, lights sytem and, maybe the
more, the DJs that cost a lot...)

All i wish for the future, is that it will give ideas to promoter to make
some parties like this with some groovy techno. Where the party people wont
be only some gloomy headz, but full of happiness and colorful.
And maybe that split between this two kinda raves would fade to a more
united movementOw well, im probably dreaming.

 Welcome 2 The Rave
 hello everyone!

Short email to let you know that we are organizing a RAVE near Paris on
wednesday, May the 7th (the 8th is holiday in France).

As you may know, techno parties are more and more difficult to organize in
France, and raves have almost disappeared.
This event is therefore a really important meeting for electronic music's
 lovers.

We expect 8.000 persons, from 9 PM to 9 AM.

The line up will gathers internationally famous artists such as

 Jeff Mills : Axis
 Laurent Garnier : F-Com
The Hacker Oxia (Live) : B-rave / Goodlife
Vitalic (Live) : Citizen / International DJ Gigolo
 Luke Slater : Nova Mute
 Michael Mayer : Kompakt
Manu le Malin : Bloc 46
 Arnaud Robotini : Black Strobe

and many light animations, lasers, giant screens, show lights etc...

Re: (313) WE WANT LYRICS! - techno tracks?

2003-04-30 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

interesting that I too have been thinking about lyrics in techno tracks and
how it's hard to find new stuff with decent (or any lyrics) - wasn't there
a new Funk D'Void or Slam track that featured a female singer? I recall an
recent interview where - I think it was Slam - was talking about their use
of lyrics and how techno producers shun lyrics. I'm trying to find
something on it right now...

I know there are tracks by Octave One and the KSR release that has lyrics
or some singing on it - but i haven't seen anything quite like the lyrical
content of, say, an Inner City track for a long time - or maybe at this
time I just can't recall hearing any new techno like that.
please inform me otherwise (looking for more peak hour type stuff or good
lead ups to)

I've been turning to Chicago house and older house/disco for lyrics but
would love to hear some new stuff with a definite techno element

yep, duly noted Ken :) I was just responding (ad nauseum, in retrospect) more
to you singling MA out as somehow responsible for all the weak immitators and
flaccid house that is coming out now... which is what I took issue with. You
can't just can't hold the true innovators responsible for the army of (largely
bad) copycats. It ain't their fault... and you can't just lump them in the

I'm not sure if this is what they're talking about (but I imagine it is with
richie's involvement), but you can use an iPod as an external drive with
Traktor, which has now merged with Final Scratch. The upshot of all this is
that if you're going to play a show where they've got a Traktor FS set-up,
alls you need to carry with you is your iPod.

BUT LETS PLEASE NOT GET INTO ANOTHER DEBATE ABOUT WHETHER COMPUTER-BASED
MIXING IS THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE PLEASE. ;)

oh, and yes please on the forthcoming plastikman release.

I agree that Metro Area really put together a unique sound,
but definitely not without precedence and influences.

oh yes totally agree... you can also hear plenty of 313 in it, in the realm of
cybotron / kraftwerk / YMO influences, especially in the first MA 12-inch...
then coming in from the other side you have a Prelude / D-Train / Moroder kind
of synthetic disco. The 2 coming together is bliss, especially for people who
like both techno AND disco, but you rarely get to hear that sound together on
more than a handful of good records.

4 Hero - Black Gold of the sun

This is actually a cover of a psychedelic soul cut done by Rotary Connection in
the late 60's (I think??) on Cadet. Anytime you play this out I can guarantee
you will get comments. You can get this on the absolutely stunning Hey Love
LP. Dusty Groove http://DustyGroove.com usually carries them, here's the
description:

-
A massively beautiful piece of work by the new Rotary Connection -- a version
of this groundbreaking Chicago soul ensemble which featured Phil Upchurch,
Henry Gibson, and Charles Stephney -- the cream of the Chicago production
scene! Minnie Riperton's still in the band on vocals, and her work on the LP is
similar to that on the legendary Come To My Garden LP. The album features the
incredible track I Am the Blackgold of the Sun -- a haunting soul anthem that
has been a favorite of groovers for years, and which was later made into a
house track by NuYorican Soul. A great album all the way through, and filled
with loads of excellent cuts! Other tracks include If I Sing My Song, Hey,
Love, Love Has Fallen On Me, and a cover of Terry Callier's Song For
Everyman.

Re: (313) WE WANT LYRICS! - techno tracks?

2003-04-30 Thread Bren
Slam have used Dot allison on a couple of things. And also they have done
a remix of her track We are science. She's a very good vocalist in an
ethereal sort of way. Can't make out the lyrics though!

Regards,
Bren.

interesting that I too have been thinking about lyrics in techno tracks
 and
how it's hard to find new stuff with decent (or any lyrics) - wasn't there
a new Funk D'Void or Slam track that featured a female singer? I recall an
recent interview where - I think it was Slam - was talking about their use
of lyrics and how techno producers shun lyrics.

 MEK

by the way that Angola 12 is killer - kept playing it over and over last
night - both sides. probably one of the best new records I've bought
 recently

Re: (313) This Friday - iPod event at all Apple stores

2003-04-30 Thread Bren
I know several people who mix their own productions from between two
laptops/computers, simply connecting them up through a standard Dj mixer,
synching the BPM in their production program, and literally pressing start
on the qued track exactly on time, then mixing as normal. I've done it
myself too. Takes a bit of getting used to , but it very workable.

Regards,
bren.

I'm not sure if this is what they're talking about (but I imagine it is
 with
richie's involvement), but you can use an iPod as an external drive with
Traktor, which has now merged with Final Scratch. The upshot of all this
 is
that if you're going to play a show where they've got a Traktor FS set-up,
alls you need to carry with you is your iPod.

BUT LETS PLEASE NOT GET INTO ANOTHER DEBATE ABOUT WHETHER COMPUTER-BASED
MIXING IS THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE PLEASE. ;)

oh, and yes please on the forthcoming plastikman release.

James Bucknell wrote:

where is metro area stuff being played in australia, who is playing it?
in the year i've been in sydney i haven't even heard any american house
music, let alone decent house of the metro area variety or any early 80s
disco stuff.
please let me know, i won't be back in new york for a few more months and
i'm very very desperate for a dance.

every time i go out to little bars and things all i hear is metro area
sounding stuff, that wicked electro/synthy house.

is it just here that this is happening? (australia) or is electro house
taking over the world?

i love the stuff but i fear that it will become over played and get into
the
top 40 with really cheesy stuff that tries to emulate the proper atrists
in
this genre...
