Re: (313) Body Surfing and Moshing

2003-05-29 Thread LR T
Agreed. I didn't think I would ever see people body surfing to Mills
*shudder*. It seemed like there were less candy kids (although still more
than I would care for...) and more frat boy/sketchy-red neck types (forgive
the blatantly rude stereotyping...) Other than that, only postive things to
say.
I think they did a great job with the sound and production on the various
stages. Much better set up than in the past. Only made it to one after
party--the Speedy J et al and it did not dissapoint. Nice vibe and set up
at St. Andrews.
Props to Derrick and his crew for pulling off a great event on such short
notice. I hope he recoops the money he put out.

I was at the Pontch as well for the second year in a row and it was WAY
more
out of control this year.

Last year, there was a big Judo convention at Cobo and many of those
attendees were in the hotel. Also, all of the National Guard (about 100)
that were helping with border security at the time were staying there as
well. So no matter where you went, you were surrounded by people who could
kick your arse if you acted up.

As for the crowd surfing and moshing, we were discussing this at the media
tent on Monday. I don't remember seeing it quite that bad in previous
years.
Two of the people I was working with were from a local media relations firm

and not familiar with the techno scene. The rest of us were explaining that

we were just as stunned as that is NOT something electronic music fans are
into. I blame it on local teenagers who only came down because there was
something going on at Hart Plaza.

(313) Detroit Cops' Behavior towards afterparty's: a conspiricy theory

2003-05-29 Thread Sheralyn
So many posts about party's being busted by the cops.

To you out of towners I'm offering a Detroiters apology for our wonderful
police department. What can I say they are cops, some of them are not known
for using all their mental faculties when they should :). Just a little joke
to anyone in law enforcement.

As a native Detroiter the police behavior makes no sense to me. How often does
Detroit have loads of international visitors as well as folks from other
states. Maybe during the auto show and then most of the international vistors
are media or car executives from non USA car companies. Not nearly as many
people as for the DEMF/Movement.

SO here we have this great festival that has already been reported to be behind
the 8 ball money wise, the organizers have put up their own money pulled a
rabbit out of their hat and made it happen. And what do the Detroit police
think, oh yeah lets go harrass folks so this can never happen again.

GO figure.

As far as conspiracy theories for the cops actions go I offer this. Kwame
Kilpatrick, our hip-hop party mayor has been in big time hot water the last few
weeks. Each day the local paper has a new article about alleged bad behavior
on the part of the mayor or his security detail. Much of it may be untrue, but
my grandmother always said where there's smoke there'e gotta be at least a
small fire. In any case, the mayor is being closely scrutinized by the media
and all his actions are being watched. Kwame is usually the first one dancing
and sweating it up at local party's and clubs according to the grape vine, with
his problems of late I'm sure he had to lay low for Movement.
Maybe he is one of those people that don't think anyone else should have fun if
he can't so he sent the cops out to bust up everyone else's fun.

Ciao

Responses to MEK --

(1) I thought technomoshpits would never happen. I was wrong :)

(2) The Ponch was mostly OK from my POV, but I didn't venture
above my 6th floor abode except once to visit some friends.
The patio party was right below my window and fortunately I saw
almost none of it since I only visited my room briefly between
noon and 6 am :) However, it looked about as chee-zee as you'd
expect, although some good people like 313er DJ Nova played.

The hotel looked less trashed than last year overall. There were
a couple idiots out in the hall around 2:30 Monday night/Tuesday
morning banging on a door and making a big fuss, but no big deal.

I usually stay at the old Best Western (currently Ambassador, soon
to be rebranded as a Holiday Inn Express but the same management),
and I'll probably just go back there again. There are some advantages
with the Ponch but the rooms that look out up Washington Blvd
from the Ambassador are my favorite view in the city of Detroit.
And I want to watch the progress on bringing the Book Cadillac
back to life, where I stayed on my first Detroit trip in 1983 :)

well I got there at 11pm and he was on.
it was banging, very banging, high lights wereg-spot, electric delux, and
panik
attak. but most of his set sounded like the live speedy j 3x12 release on
+8,
think its called speedy j live.

VD - was really cool but they stopped the show just as it was getting hot.
and i
like how security did that to. stood in front of him and shined his
flashlight
in his face. very rude way to treat the people who are making you money.

i was upset the party eneded when it did and they did not let us know in
advance
it was ending at 2. maybe they did not???

but starting at party at 9pm when there is qualty talent at the festival was
short sighted imo. i missed stewart walker and keith kemp.

the fact that there was only three people per room on the flier makes me
believe
paxahau knew they could only go until 2am? but what do i know, i'm just
nobody
from lansing.

i am under the impression the shelter stayed open until 4am all the time.
except
5/24

one last comment.

please mr police man let me have some legal fun.

scotto

ok i'm way bored at work.
how was the speedy j set anyways?

so is it?

ahh but that's what I thought he did? I mean SPW said the other day he did a
true Wizard set and yeah I think that's what he delivered. I guess whatever
Mills does he will always be judged on what he did or has done. yeah sure I

special even if your from Detroit.

Don't get me wrong I am not saying that Jim and co should not have an

Re: (313) Detroit Cops' Behavior towards afterparty's: a conspiricy theory

2003-05-29 Thread marc christensen
Indeed, Detroit cops' behaviour towards Detroiters (or out-of-town
guests) isn't exactly exemplary.

IIRC, in 2001, there were nearly a dozen unarmed civilians shot dead
by Detroit cops in situations where the use of lethal force was
certainly questionable. (Can you count holding a rake as being
armed?)

Don't judge Detroit by the opinions or behaviours of its police
officers, judges, elected officials, bankers, insurance agents, pawn
shop owners, etc. etc. In short, parts of the establishment that are
meant to be enforcers of one sort or another aren't usually known for
their forward-thinking ideals or behaviour. Much of the real spirit
of Detroit exists in a tense relationship with these enforcers, who
for instance don't like people hanging out on their front porches
with friends late on summer evenings. To cops and judges, we're all
potential perpetrators. In a similar vein, and more on topic, the
independently-organized events that made house and techno viable in
Detroit weren't exactly the kinds of events that cops endorsed
either, though it was back in the day before the media scare about
raves, ecstasy, etc.

As for the future of the DEMF-now-Movement festival, if the most
regressive elements of the police force had their way, *both* the
Downtown Hoedown and the African American World Fest would have been
shut down in their second years. Thankfully, the police aren't in
charge of scheduling Hart Plaza.

My .02, of course.

So many posts about party's being busted by the cops.

To you out of towners I'm offering a Detroiters apology for our
wonderful police department. What can I say they are cops, some
of them are not known for using all their mental faculties when they
should :). Just a little joke to anyone in law enforcement.

As a native Detroiter the police behavior makes no sense to me. How
often does Detroit have loads of international visitors as well as
folks from other states. Maybe during the auto show and then most
of the international vistors are media or car executives from non
USA car companies. Not nearly as many people as for the
DEMF/Movement.

SO here we have this great festival that has already been reported
to be behind the 8 ball money wise, the organizers have put up their
own money pulled a rabbit out of their hat and made it happen. And
what do the Detroit police think, oh yeah lets go harrass folks so
this can never happen again.

GO figure.

As far as conspiracy theories for the cops actions go I offer this.
Kwame Kilpatrick, our hip-hop party mayor has been in big time hot
water the last few weeks. Each day the local paper has a new
article about alleged bad behavior on the part of the mayor or his
security detail. Much of it may be untrue, but my grandmother
always said where there's smoke there'e gotta be at least a small
fire. In any case, the mayor is being closely scrutinized by the
media and all his actions are being watched. Kwame is usually the
first one dancing and sweating it up at local party's and clubs
according to the grape vine, with his problems of late I'm sure he
had to lay low for Movement.
Maybe he is one of those people that don't think anyone else should
have fun if he can't so he sent the cops out to bust up everyone
else's fun.

(313) thoughts on Movement 03

2003-05-29 Thread lisa

Hi all - my immediate thoughts on Movement 03:

Overall

This was my first visit to the festival. I will definitely be back next
year. It was a wonderful way to spend 4+ days! The weather was not so
bad as I thought it might be: very little rain, mostly cooler with some
sunny days made for decent dancing and fun. The setting was lovely;
multiple outdoor arenas nestled between concrete grass, bordered by
giant city buildings and the river with a view of Windsor across the
way. Walking into Hart Plaza with thousands of multi-culti-nationals
united by music was inspiring. I found the crowd mostly peaceful
respectful - kinda like tech-hippies. It was great meeting new friends,
peeps I've known for years but never met in person and also hanging with
my cousin from Seattle (who I was traveling with).

Town

I enjoyed exploring the section of Detroit within walking distance to
Hart Plaza. There were so many old buildings with beautiful architecture
detail on them. One I liked especially had a lot of colourful tiles,
marble indian motifs on/in it. We went inside and explored the ground
floor basement where there was an enormous multi-section bank vault
which had been converted to a cafe sitting area. The GM buildings
totally rocked - enormous cylindrical structures with a semi-metallic
sheen in the proper light - how very techno! It was nice how the
buildings were large but not all squished together like in NYC, Philly
and places in northern NJ. It was sad to see so many of them empty and
run down, however it looked as though they are fixing a few. We saw a
bit of that riding the People Mover train.

Lodging

We stayed at the Pontchartrain hotel. I think it should have been called
the Party-train hotel. As for location it was fantastic - within walking
distance of Hart Plaza and many surrounding things. The room service
food I got was decent and the rooms were typical chain hotel stylee. The
staff was really nice and dealt well overall with having a packed hotel
for the weekend. Our first room had a loud buzzing air conditioner so we
got a new one. They both had a smell of stale smoke in them even tho'
they were non-smoking rooms. We ended up on the 16th floor overlooking
the deck where they had the parties. I heard some bad things from ladies
cleaning the rooms also the hotel staff. They ran out of towels on
Sunday (this is a large hotel mind you). The lady cleaning our room that
day said kids stole her towels while she was trying to work. The desk
staff said there were too many people in some rooms so they didn't have
enough towels and had to keep washing them. There was rumour of a fire
somewhere in the hotel but I didn't see it (or hear it). I was also told
that kids took fire extinguishers rolled them down stairwells (in a 24
floor hotel). An exit sign on our floor got ripped off and busted all
over the floor. I saw two people having sex in a hallway but didn't
stick around to watch because they were kinda gross looking. hehe Hmmm,
let's see what else... we saw kids get kicked out for spitting out the
window. They looked pretty young. Every time the elevator stopped at the
Terrace level (where the deck party was) the doors would open, you'd
smell mega cologne perfume and the chicks looked all skanky-ho-bag
the guys were super bling-bling. When I was leaving on Tuesday the guy
at the desk was saying members of the hotel staff felt many guests were
disrespectful of the hotel and also the staff, acting like spoiled white
kids. I have to agree with him. He said that the city takes that stuff
into account when deciding whether to have another festival for the next
year.

Transportation

OK, is it just me or do many cab/taxi drivers in Detroit have no clue
where things are in the town? 75% of the cabs we took the guys had no
clue where we were going and these were venues or buildings on main
streets. I found that kinda odd. The People Mover was a curious thing -
it seemed to go around an area I'd consider walking distance but I
guess if you're tired or wearing shoes that hurt it's a good thing to
take. They had some nice tile work designs in the little station
stops. We mostly walked everywhere unless it was mega-blocks away.

Music

I was able to catch:

Kevin Saunderson Kenny Larkin
Ectomorph
Derek Plaslaiko
Speedy J
Matthew Dear
Eddie Fowlkes
Francois K.
Dan Bell
Anthony Shakir
Carl Craig the Detroit Experiment
Jeff Mills
Amon Tobin
Prefuse 73

I saw others as well but either I cannot remember who or wasn't there
long enough to say I really saw them play. Out of all the stages I
enjoyed the Underground one most, but that's my style preference. I
thought Derek Plaslaiko played a fabulous set at the paxahau event.
Matthew Dear was great there also at the Underground stage. Eddie
Fowlkes was fantastic live - I've never heard him play before. He really
had people rockin' in a style I am fond of. Francois K was like a mad
scientist

PG LOL. I jumped in a cab on the way home from the Cannonball party at
around 5am or so and the dude drove for about 10 minutes and we had returned
right back to the front of the cannonball party. WTF! The cool thing was
that there was this alternative radio show on and the Carl Craig Detroit

The people mover is a long standing detroit joke.. It doesn't go anywhere !

Don't get me wrong I am not saying that Jim and co should not have an
opinion but hey at least it wasn't as bad as Juan Atkins was :0) But even
so he played wicked tracks but if you wanted to have a go for Train
wrecking then Juan would win ever time :)

Do you mean Juan's set at the Music Institute tent? I thought it was
relatively free of mismatched beats - in fact it was a great set. We only
left because we were getting smashed between people rushing into watch the
dance circles and people rushing toward the front of the tent. Right around
the time he dropped that West End record - who was it? Taana Garner (Work

I have heard two sets from him recently and noDnB was featured in any of them.
The first was all Chicago acid which pleased me no end and the second was kinda
leftfield house with a few latin rhythms thrown in, though I didn't pay too
much attention cos Osunlade was playing in the other room - he is definitely
worth hearing IMO

RE: (313) thoughts on Movement 03

2003-05-29 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

Well, the taxis we had were driven at somewhere around 75 mph at all times
- highway or city streets. And everyone of them needed some serious wheel
alignments. Three cheers for Detroit road surfaces and lead footed cabbies!
Hip-hip - holy sh*t look out for that pothole! :D

PG LOL. I jumped in a cab on the way home from the Cannonball party at
around 5am or so and the dude drove for about 10 minutes and we had
returned
right back to the front of the cannonball party. WTF! The cool thing was
that there was this alternative radio show on and the Carl Craig Detroit
Experiment was playing all the way back to my hotel :)

Taana Garner (Work
that body)?

(313) Re: mills:the bucket heads

2003-05-29 Thread Chana Goodman
I thought the Mills set was great. Yeah the big upset in the beginning was
pretty sad, but who knows what happened or why it happened. Regardless he
jumped right back in there as if nothing had occured. I loved the fact that
he went from house to hip hop to classic mills tracks, and all totally
seemless with that amazing mills sound of a crazy train ride into the depths
of the earth. Personally I was thrilled by his choice of the BUCKET HEADS,
Ive always had a soft spot for that track, I think its great, regardless of
it being top 40, top 40 does not always mean bad. My only dissapointment
was not hearing 'changes of life', one of my favorites. I knew he was not
going to play it though because his set was not as minimal as he sometimes
plays, but as was mentioned before, his choice was totally appropriate for
the space and audience. Jeff Mills rocked!!!

Also Ectomorph (BMG), got the crowd jumping on Saturday Mornign in the
underground. I very much enjoyed their version of Shari Vari!

I was phyched to finally hear K hand, wow she is a hard and funky broad.
Right on detroit!

Francois K was great, at the afterparty on Sun. I think it was, as well as
Gene Farris on Sat. Night. Never heard either live so that was a treat for
sure.

All in all I had a great time and I loved hearing that UR track ( forget the
name. Is it make your transition?), surprized me how many djs used that
track in their sets, but I thought it was great, heard the track alone a few
times on my stereo. At first I did not like it, then slowly I seacretly
started to like it even though I thought it was a little cheesy. But it
sounds great mixed for sure, first time I heard it mixed.

Like I said, great festival, thank you so much Detroit!!! Until next
year

What is the track that Gary Martin played that sounded like the beginning of
stomp the musical, haha, not that Ive ever seen it but I sure do remember
that little rythm rift, from commercials or something.

Also not trying to drag this issue into the ground, but Im curious when
Mills trainwrecked, cause I did not hear it at all other than the
beginning mishap, and perhaps a slight rythm slow down once when switching
to a hip hop track can't remember which one. But other than that the set
honestly seemed totally smooth to me. Im curious though, respond privately

(313) mills and hawtin

2003-05-29 Thread James Grindle
I saw Mills in Record time during the 01 festival.
Here comes my flame bait. For all the forward thinking stuff mills preaches
he should be spinning some music people don't know.
As far as Hawtin is concerned, well I missed the Necto party but have seen
those antics in New York alot over the past year and a half. As long as Rich is
ok with that no one else should care. Everyone bitched during the de9 era that
he was a boring robot at least he is bringing his personality to the decks and
having fun with it. I for one am completely excited about the new record.
Everything I heard was straight up mind-fuk. I love the lyrics and vocals
don't look to me for the answers, I'm just a voice inside your head, help
yourself!
Excellant. Most of it does sound Plastikman though so I'm sure people will
complain about that too. It seemed to encompass everyform of his material all
into one album with more emphasis on the minimal Consumed era long tracks with
huge bass lines.
  just my 2 cents
I hope to make Memorial day weekend in Detroit 5 years in a row!

I saw Mills in Record time during the 01 festival.
Here comes my flame bait. For all the forward thinking stuff mills
preaches he should be spinning some music people don't know.
As far as Hawtin is concerned, well I missed the Necto party but have seen
those antics in New York alot over the past year and a half. As long as Rich
is ok with that no one else should care. Everyone bitched during the de9 era
that he was a boring robot at least he is bringing his personality to the
decks and having fun with it. I for one am completely excited about the new
record. Everything I heard was straight up mind-fuk. I love the lyrics and
vocals don't look to me for the answers, I'm just a voice inside your head,
help yourself!
Excellant. Most of it does sound Plastikman though so I'm sure people will
complain about that too. It seemed to encompass everyform of his material
all into one album with more emphasis on the minimal Consumed era long
tracks with huge bass lines.
   just my 2 cents
I hope to make Memorial day weekend in Detroit 5 years in a row!

Does anyone have it recorded?

Not sure if anyone has heard about it, but Hawtin and crew will be
playing at Tastefest (July 3 I believe) and I'm assuming that there
will be an afterparty. He played some of what I'm assuming is the new
Plastikman tracks later in the night at the Necto and it sounded real
 good.

Sounds like your mail client is set up to compose in HTML format, and reply

313 list dislikes HTML format, but loves plain text. Change your settings

I was one of the ones that agreed. Hey I'm as big a mills fan as they
come, and even though I enjoyed his 909 stint and some of the records, I
truly feel that he performed way below his standards that day. Jim's not
trying to influence people who liked him to believe the same thing. He's
just calling it like he sees it.
As for hawtin, well I've never been a big fan of his , so my opinions on
him are probably biased in a negative way.

I also will go on record and say that I didn't enjoy the festival this year
as much as the previous ones.

I made a post about mills and hawtin letting us down. Since then I have
gotten 14 private emails from people who totally agree.

Don¹t worry people you can agree in public, Jeff Mills wont shoot you
through your email. :0

On a side note, has anyone ever seen jeff mills at a record store, you see
many other dj's going shopping in various cities but does mills. If not then
he damn well should, we heard his same 30 tracks enough already. ;)

Just out of curiosity- what biased you?

Are you talking about the quality of the festival alone or the quality of
the weekend? There seems to almost an inverse equation to how good Hart
Plaza is compared to how good the afterparties are. I for one had a pretty
darn good time at Hart Plaza. Much better than last year, although still
not nearly as good as 2000 or 2001.

On the other hand, there certainly were no afterparties that matched last
year's Control, Cannonball Run or KMS afterparties.

Perhaps there is a universal limitation to how much good partying you can
have in a weekend.
